Just finished a fabulous meal here. This wonderful new restaurant is in the old Golden Dragon Chinese restaurant location next to Sprouts Market We had several tandoori dishes. I highly recommend the rack of lamb. You get 5 nice big, plump, juicy ribs, all cooked to perfection and accompanied by plenty of veggies and a side of basmati rice. The Himalayan chicken soup and the veggie soup were also excellent. I see many 5 star reviews but I'm going to be a little more realistic. I think it's closer to 4.2 only because they are still so new, short staffed, and I don't think they finished remodeling yet. It's a family business and right now it's only two brothers and a helper. One brother cooks (back if house), the other manages the front of house (customers). So when it's crowded (7pm Sunday) it took a while to order, and tandoori dishes take a little longer as well. So it took about 45 - 50 min to get the food, but I will say it was worth the wait. A few things I noticed that I hope they take care of. I noticed that some of the windows have clear tape (packing tape) around the edges like the chalk is loose or drafty, not sure but it looked tacky. It doesn't bother anyone, but would fix that if it were my restaurant. I think a new restaurant should make a great impression all around. The old Chinese restaurant was run down, had photos of food tapped to the windows, and it looks like a lot of the tape was still there. Just seemed odd that they wouldn't clean all that up when they painted and replaced the carpeting. I did notice some of the wooden moldings were still broken or missing pieces (left from the previous restaurant). It really doesn't take much to fix some of these items but I'm sure it's a lot when opening a new place and you're trying to open with a budget I guess. None of those issues will stop me from frequenting this new restaurant. The owners are friendly, the food is fabulous and the prices are very fair. The lunch specials look amazing and I'm sure I'll stop in there top grab lunch some time. I'd certainly recommend calling ahead to get some food to go as well. read more

GREAT FOOD! Came in on a Wednesday night around 6:30 to check it out, couldn't believe how PACKED it was! Had to wait a bit, but the food was definitely worth the wait. Vegetable pakora to start was delicious... we should've gotten some naan to go along with it. Every other table knew the lowdown and ordered it... it smelled awesome. Oh well, next time. Came here for dinner on husband's birthday. We normally keep things simple and only order two entrees, as this type of food tends to be quite filling, but we decided to branch out a bit this time. We started with a daal (lentil soup), which was creamy, nutty, and delicious. We also had vegetable samosas, which were very good. I'm not a big fried food person, but the samosas were great, and the sauce was delicious. I was boring and ordered lamb vindaloo (it's my go-to), but was not disappointed. There's a reason I always go for the vindaloo - because it's amazing! This place was no different. The lamb was tender and flavorful, and the potatoes in there were great. The dish was flavorful and fantastic. Husband ordered the Rato Bhale ko Masu, which is "boneless chicken cooked in onion and tomato gravy with Himalayan spices." This was something neither of us had tried before, and it was also very good. I think there was a lot of garlic in there (definitely a good thing). I tried it and loved it. Maybe not quite as much as lamb, but I just might have to order the Rato Bhale ko Masu next time... We also noticed there are some pretty good lunch specials so we will be back! read more

I was amazed at how busy the place was and shocked how delicious it was too. Be prepared to not be in a rush here. The service is quite a bit slower, but well worth the wait. We ordered the #36 and 42 at a spice level 6 out of 10. I enjoy a bit of spice and that came in right where we like it. I would veer away from the momo's (dumplings) though as they didn't have that much flavor and more bland. We asked for recommendations and the waiters said everything...(main it a bit difficult) and couldn't really give suggestions so we shot from the hip. I love Indian food and so was happy when this restaurant opened years ago. When the owner decided to sell though, I was worried that it might not continue to be a favorite place to eat. Fortunately, the new owner of Himalayan Kitchen in Encinitas is doing a wonderful job. The food is still excellent, chock-full of delicious Himalayan spices, with the same menu -- maybe even better than before. The atmosphere is warm, clean, and bright. The Owner and employees are efficient and go out of their way to be of service. We enjoy the spiritual music, even though it's still not too varied. :-) I'm a regular now because of their inexpensive luncheon specials that include two curries, dal, flatbread, and basmati rice. The samosas are amazing with their special tamarind sauce. Thankfully we have an excellent Indian restaurant nearby that is still one of our favorites, with easy parking, and in close proximity to Sprouts so we can stop in on our way back to the car. Simply amazing!! I ordered the chicken tikka masala, garlic herbed naan, and vegetable momo. All three were extraordinary and very flavorful. I ordered level 9 out of ten spicy and it wasn't too spicy. Next time I will order the 10. The sauce served with the momo was really delicious I don't know what it was but it was so good. And the naan was really flavorful and perfectly crispy around the edges. They have a yelp deal to check in for a discount off your entire bill which, when used, made the meal very affordable for a nice fun night out in Encinitas. The servers were very friendly and accommodating. The atmosphere was nightly decorated with what seemed like authentic flare (but I wouldn't know that!). Plenty of parking outsude. The dozens of places I've had since living in the states can only manage a grim 3/10. Himalayan Kitchen has lifted this veil of despair. Holy wow incredible!!! I decided to come here on a lark: I wanted to go out for dinner with my mom, sister, and little niece, and Nepalese food sounded interesting. I'd never heard of this place and the reviews seemed very positive. Our dinner was absolutely amazing! At the risk of sounding foolishly poetic: the flavors just sang. We had the chiya tea (spiced milky tea, unsweetened with sugar on the side) and a mango lassie to drink. The Rato Bhale Ra Bhanta (chicken and eggplant) was so delicious: rich, spiced, and wonderful. The Lukshya Ko Masu (spiced lamb) was the hit of the table. I also loved the kheer (rice pudding) for dessert: the small portion size was perfect to finish off a meal where I probably ate too much of everything. read more

We were looking forward to trying this place out but we didn't even get to! It was an average night and wasn't super busy. We were at the front counter waiting for someone to seat us. There was a guy at the counter working on some receipts, didn't make eye contact at all with us and proceeded to help other customers. We stood there for about 15 minutes when I finally caught the guy back at the counter and told him we've been waiting for a long time with no acknowledgement. By that point, the customers who came in after us left by this point. He didn't seem phased by this and just told us to wait, so we just walked out. Horribly slow service. Best Indian food in San Diego! The curries here are so flavorful and so many options. They have at least a dozen really great vegetarian dishes. This is a 3.5 review. I dined here for lunch twice in the same week. On my first visit, I arrived a little after 11am. There was a good stream of people coming in for lunch. A little over 1/2 full by noon. I ordered the lunch special goat curry and Saag aloo. Flavors were good and large portions. Saag aloo was a bit sweet for me. I agree with a previous reviewer that the rice was a bit hard and the naan wasn't right. Owner was really nice and apologized for the naan as the tandoori wasn't completely hot since they just opened. On my subsequent visit, I met with 3 other friends. Owner was in the back and service was extremely slow. We had to ask to place our order then ask again to get our check. There were only 3 tables occupied. My friends were disappointed by the chicken chilly saying the vegetables were mushy. Chicken vindaloo was really good. I ordered the goat curry and paneer tikka masala. This time, my order was significantly smaller than a few days ago. I am giving a 4 star in hopes their service and quality consistency. And please use less sugar! read more

Got stranded in the area with a flat tire and desperately needed dinner. They were so good about substituting coconut milk for cream in their dishes to make it vegan, something I read on yelp that they'll happily do (and did)! I don't think we were expecting anything particularly great but my boyfriend and I still talk about going down to where we got "that flat tire" just for the food here even though it's a county over and an hour away. Fantastic and kept us warm and happy on a cold, cranky night! read more

Yummy! Instead of chai tea they have something called Chiya tea which tastes just like chai. Plenty of ginger taste. Good Curry- we ordered butter chicken, Naan, vegetable palak paneer. Nice atmosphere although one of my friends felt it was a bit smoky. You won't need reservations. Just walk in and they will seat you. Would definitely go back! Solid food read more

Really beautiful atmosphere inside, the staff is ridiculously friendly and courteous. I've never been there where I haven't felt like part of their family. I cannot recommend the Lamb Biryani enough! It's like every bite has different ingredients and spices and takes you on a new adventure through their cuisine. I recommend spice level five so you can enjoy the delicacy of each of the spices without combating the heat. An extra side of Raita goes well with that. Their Daal soup is also ridiculously good. You wouldn't think lentil soup could be this extra. Butter chicken is one of our favorites as well, that tomato gravy is so rich. The only thing I don't love is the chicken tikka masala. The sauce is good but the chicken always seems dry. read more

Wow! I've had the pleasure of eating at the Carlsbad Village location, but I have never ordered delivery from them. Food was hot, fresh, delicious, and arrived earlier than promised! Everything was wrapped beautifully -- no spills, nothing soggy, but they also didn't go crazy with overwrap! We ordered 2 orders of garlic naan (no one wants to be stingy with sharing naan), pakoras, and vegetable samosas....and they were all really tasty appetizers! For our main courses, we ordered Chicken Korma, chicken momos (steamed dumplings), and we tried the boneless lamb dish called Lukshya ko Masu. It is a new favorite! The sauce for the Lukshya ko Masu is a tangy, deep orange (almost red), and it is slightly sweet. I used every piece of my garlic naan to soak up that heavenly sauce! On last minute whim, I added an order of their Himalayan Vegetable Soup, and it was lovely! You could just smell the love that went into the herbed cauliflower, onion, and zucchini filled broth. I will add it to our favorite go to dishes. I am afraid we forgot to take any photos...we were so enticed by the delicious smell of the food, that we dove right in and ate our dinner with gusto! Promise to get pictures next time. The best news of all just might be the price... our food order was just over $70 for 2 appetizers, side of soup, 2 sides of Naan, and 3 main dishes! That doesn't include our delivery fee or tip...but I've paid $45 for a lack luster not so fantastic fast food meal...that had none of this flavor! Give Himalayan Kitchen a try....I think you'll be very pleased with service, quality of food, and the variety to choose from. We will absolutely be ordering from them again! read more

I've never had Himalayan food before but it's very similar to Indian food, which I've had often. I stopped here with a friend and we both enjoyed ourselves. The Masala sauce was really good, reminiscent of the Indian version I've had before but lighter and elegantly flavorful, we had it with shrimp. The salmon tandoori was also a standout, I'd only had chicken that way, this was even better for sea food lovers the atmosphere was quiet and we had a couple of glasses of wine from thrir small list. Recently moved to Encinitas from the bay area. A neighbor recommended Himalayan Kitch. for Indian food. Our family has mixed dietary likes so Inidian food is a great way to keep everyone happy. The tikka is really good, vegetarian daughter gets tofu or paneer, hubby likes chicken, veggie samosas are one of my favorites, chana masala is a favorite of all.
