Hildrup moving coordinator (melissa), packers (dont recalll names) and movers (Kathy and her team) are truly professional movers. I have moved several times in my life and this organization was truly the best. As a cancer patient who really could not assist in moving or packing they took care of me. Hilldrup delivered my furniture and other belongings to my new home on 5/19/2018. The move was chaotic, to say the least. After everything was in my new home, I inspected the condition of the furniture and of the boxes. I signed a form saying that all was in good order. However, I did not notice the floors. The tile floors were chipped in about 4 or 5 places and the laminate floors were scratched in about 4 places. If I had inspected everything with a fine tooth comb at the time of the completion of the move, the movers would have been there for quite some time. I contacted Carmen Garret, the claims coordinator, on May 24, 2018, 5 days after the completion of the move. Initially she said that she would renew my claim. A few days later, I put in a call to her. Days later, she finally returned my call. She said that she would get back to me. On June 20, 2018, I received an e-mail from her denying my claim because it took me five days to put in the complaint. It is not easy to move and look for everything that could be wrong . She new from the onset that I made the complaint five days after the completion of the move. Why didn't she deny the claim in the first place instead of telling me she had to review the claim? As I said previously, I did not look at the floors initially. I noticed them later. The fact remains that the movers chipped and scratched the floors. I am requesting monetary compensation of only $100.00, which I think is MORE THAN FAIR. read more

I have moved with Hilldrup seven times within Prince William and Fauquier counties. I was relieved to hear that Pottery Barn in Fredericksburg would be using them to deliver a new couch. Matt at Hilldrup set it all up. Curtis and Travis delivered my couch and cheerfully tackled challenges with doorways such as having to remove rubber stop blocks on a sliding glass door. They were very professional and courteous. Very customer focused! read more

Our family has been part of 4 different corporate moves. I have literally been a part of 8 packs/unpacks. By far...Hilldrup has been the worst experience we have had. The pack was horrible, boxes missed mark. Items thrown in together that simply should never have been packed together. TV's were not crated, therefore damaged. Due dates for arrival?? We waited a week, in an empty house. Then, the final blow. When we place a claim for items that were damaged... they took the items for repair - salvaged them without our consent, and low balled an offer. Simply the WORST experience I have ever had. I strongly advise anyone who is preparing to move use Hilldrup! Their service from the initial quote to packing and delivery are top notch and I have no complaints. The movers were prompt, very courteous and handled everything with care. They basically treated my house as if it was one of theirs making sure that everything was packed properly and delivered to the exact room that it was packed from. I rarely write reviews yet I read them all the time so if anybody is reading this Hilldrup is the number one choice for moving and if I ever have to move again they would be the only ones that I would choose. read more

Moved back to the area from across the pond. I heard terrible things about them, but was told I had to use them due to lack of options. They certainly lived up to their terrible reputation. Their customer service (Joyce) was the worst I have experienced. When our airfreight arrived, it was at the airport for over a week before I called the airline and was told it arrived. Hilldrup said it needed special approval (from some 3rd party) to clear customs on our behalf. After another 10 days of back and forth, I went to the airport and picked up my belongings. When I called Hilldrup, not even an "I'm sorry" or "glad you got your items". Fast forward 4 months and our slow boat effects arrived. Joyce was lightening fast to say our stuff arrived and that we would be charged for storing the items if we didn't schedule delivery ASAP. A good majority of our items had mold. Luckily, most of it was washable. There was about $500 worth of items completely ruined. I submitted a claim to Hilldrup, which was rejected via a letter saying it was the responsibility of the packers. I called and explained the items sat for 4 months due solely to the negligence of Hilldrup (provided email correspondence). Still waiting for a call back.... My only satisfaction is that the 5 or 6 people moving after me were able to change companies. I will say that the 2 gentlemen that delivered and unpacked our items were great. Made a few dings in the drywall, but that can be expected. I will never use HIlldrup again and recommend the same for anyone reading this review. read more

I have moved 43 times and Hilldrup was by far the worst experience of moving in my life. I moved from Orlando, Fl to Las Vegas, NV. At the front end, everything seemed fine. The movers showed up, disassembled my furniture, wrapped, strapped , packed everything and loaded up on a 23 ft truck . They told me they were driving it straight to Las Vegas. Once my husband and I arrived in Vegas, we had to stay in a hotel for three weeks before our furniture arrived. They told us they took our furniture to their warehouse and divided it into two loads with other people's stuff and waited to move it with their stuff. Our furniture arrived past the promised window of time. The first load came on a 53 ft truck and part of our furniture and boxes were in the rear of the truck. When the movers opened the back door of the truck, nothing was strapped in, so a lot of our furniture fell off the truck onto the street and sidewalk and broke into hundreds of pieces. From there, things got worse. Our furniture arrived with no packing or wrapping materials. Every single piece of furniture was broken, scratched, marred or destroyed...$20,000 worth. They gave me $3000 for my destroyed furniture, mobility scooters, delayed shipment, time in hotel, etc. This move of only 6,000 lbs. costs me over $10,000 plus all the damaged furniture and all they could offer was $3000. They also lost 11 boxes of LeCrusett Pots n' Pans, Fostoria Glassware and all my cookbooks. They've never found them. The 2nd shipment arrived on a flat bed truck and was in crates. Once they opened the crates, all my furniture was piled on top of each other with no wrapping, packing or anything, so it all got ruined. Also, the delivery guys were told to drop and run. In otherwords, they did not reassemble the furniture. we had to call a 3rd party to do that. What an awful move. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. We were very pleased with our recent move with Hilldrup. The packers did an excellent job, were careful to label things well, and worked tirelessly from the moment they arrived at our home until they were done. The moving crew showed up on time, was professional and friendly, and worked non-stop for 2 days to load all of our things, despite below-freezing temps and lots of heavy items. When our delivery was delayed due to the blizzard, Hilldrup kept us well-informed and bent over backwards to try to accommodate our revised schedule. The delivery crew went above and beyond by helping us shovel snow and remove the thick ice on our driveway prior to delivering our goods. We moved over 25,000 pounds of household goods to include a piano, motorcycle, glass curio cabinet, glass entertainment center, china cabinet and artwork and had only 1 minor thing damaged. Considering how many staircases the crew had to navigate, how delicate some of our items were, and how fully packed our moving van was, we were very happy that they took such good care of us. Through it all our move coordinator, Sandy, was an absolute pleasure to work with. She kept us informed every step of the way, answered any question that we threw her way, and was a wonderful resource. We will definitely consider Hilldrup for future household moves. read more

As a military member I move every 2-3 years. The move with his company was by far the worst. I'm still trying to get claim forms from a delivery two months ago and am working with a lawyer about additional fees they've since charged me. If I could give zero stars, I would. We've had companies hire movers a handful of times for work relocations and we've always had good luck until now. Never filed a claim. We had furniture arrive broken (or assembled by their team and broke shortly after), and they're doing everything in their power to avoid liability. The "inspectors" who came to look at the furniture lied to our faces -- telling us the pieces were clearly broken but reporting back differently. Their claims people have even scoured the web for bad reviews of our furniture in search of a way to blame it on something previously existing- even though we've used it for years without issue. If you can avoid them, do so. We're not getting anywhere with them, but we will be pursuing the issue with the large employer who hired them. Maybe they'll stop - saving other people the heartache and hitting these guys where it hurts. Bottom line, if you want your stuff to arrive in tact, hire someone else. read more

I paid Hilldrup over $400 per month for more than two years to store my household goods. I bought into their "we take great care of your stuff" message and so I was willing to pay a little more money rather than go with more economical solutions. Unfortunately, when Hilldrup delivered my possessions to my new house, a desk and a few other items were broken. When we contacted Hilldrup, I was informed that I had signed agreed to their standard insurance coverage which included a $300 deductible. I can't tell you how insane this is. What this means is that Hilldrup is able to damage or flat-out steal up to $300 of your possessions with impunity. I paid over $10,000 over the course of two years to keep my possessions safe, and when they damaged my stuff, they tell me tough luck. First, do not use Hilldrup for your moving / storage needs - plain and simple. You think you are paying more to have someone take good care of your stuff and that is just plain false. Second, make sure that when you sign the contract, that you are ensuring that THEY have insurance and are accountable for damage. Seriously, and this isn't hyperbole, the policy that Hilldrup uses gives them impunity to damage or steal a portion of your possessions without being held accountable. Just find someone who will take their accountability more seriously. BTW, I dedicate the one star to he people who actually unpacked my possessions - they were very friendly and professional...it is just too bad that their company is terrible. read more

This is my and my husband's first experience using a moving service rather than doing it ourselves. Our packers, Lily and Roxanne, were both especially kind, friendly, professional, and hard working. Moving via Hilldrup was such a pain, I would not recommend them to anyone. A view of what happened: 1. Moving from Chicago to NYC, had my shipment picked up on June 26. 2. I wasn't told until 3 days before when my shipment would be delivered but was given a moving window of July 1 to July 16. With a new job it wasn't great to have to tell me boss ahead of time "I need time off, I just don't know when, but sometime in the next two weeks". I sounded like a fool. 3.Finally on July 10 (15 days since my stuff was picked up in Chicago; ridiculous that it took that long since its only a 15 hour drive!) I was told my stuff would be arriving. Problem was my stuff did not arrive, somebody else who had the same last name as me did. I can reason with this mix-up, but the order number on my shipment started with a "4" and the other order started with a "9". This was someone purely being lazy and seeing the name on the box, and not the actual order number. 4. After demanding to be put in a hotel since I didn't have a bed or anything to sleep on, I was told I can buy an air mattress, pillow, sheets, blanket, etc. up to $100. Between living in Chicago and now NYC, there is no chance $100 would cover that cost. 5. It took from July 10 to July 21 for them to find my stuff, and I was told it was in NYC all along, just that they picked up the wrong name but rest assured, my shipment was in NYC. Can you imagine how infuriating it was that it took 11 days for them to find my shipment, when it was in NYC all along?? That too, it had been since June 26 that my items were picked up in Chicago! 6. Having already taken time off previously, I specifically requested the moving company come after 2 PM Tuesday afternoon as I had a busy morning and early afternoon with meetings. At lunch time, I got a call from my building saying my moving company was there, they showed up 1 hour and 45 minutes early! Embarrassingly, I had to cancel meetings at work to run to my apartment, I wasn't making the best impression to my new boss/team. 7. In the end, I was given $100 / day since my move date ended for a total of $500 along with the reimbursement for my bedding in the interim. I sent a receipt of my bedding reimbursement on July 10 to Hilldrup and it took nearly 4 weeks for them to give me any details on why this wasn't sent to me, only to find the mail had bounced back to them as they forgot to include my apartment number on the mail. This was so frustrating, especially since my $500 check had already arrived! All in all, getting $600 back on a $2300 move (cost of air mattress included) nearly a full month after my pick up date is absolutely unacceptable. Once my moving window had passed on July 16, I told them I needed a hotel every night until my shipment arrived; I was told the $100 / day could be used for this. Again, this is NYC where there is no chance you find a hotel for $100 a day. I live and work in midtown, I wasn't going to travel 20+ miles to find a hotel that was within their budget. I would strongly consider finding other competing services instead of Hilldrup. I will say the folks I worked with were very understanding and compassionate with the situation, but it still can't make up for all the trouble I had to endure. read more

Picking a moving company is hard and they all seem to have a mixed bag of reviews. If you are looking at Hilldrup, some things you should watch for: First, if their packers keep anything in an original box that you provided, even if they pack it or open the box to check it, Hilldrup won't take responsibility. We lost an antique because it was in an original box, which the packers not only opened but added items to, and when it broke, Hilldrup said it wasn't their problem. Secondly, if you are doing an out-of-state move, ask where they are going to get their crew members. In our new location, the Hilldrup driver picked up day laborers who couldn't follow the simplest of instructions. Color coded boxes were left in the wrong room; when I opened one closet at the end of the day, there was literally 4 different color coded boxes (coded for different rooms) in one closet. A number of pieces of furniture ended up in the wrong room. When I pointed out the issues, despite everything being coded and marked, the crew chief asked me to literally stand in the driveway as the truck got unpacked and tell them where to put each piece/box. And at the end of the day, they left the laborers at our house and we had to help them find transportation back to their homes...which were not even close to us. Third, take the time to mark off every single box and item as it comes off the truck. That is, admittedly, a kind of overwhelming task when you are trying to unload and get organized. We were missing several items and reported it immediately (the same day). Hilldrup acknowledged it and said they would trace the driver and find the items, but ultimately because we had "signed off" when the truck left, Hilldrup said they were not responsible. Hilldrup's settlement for missing/broken items was a laughable fraction of their value or replacement cost. On a good note, the packers were kind and hard-working, and it was a small number of items that broke relative to the total they packed. Moving is a stressful experience any way you slice it; hiring Hilldrup certainly increased our stress both that day and afterwards. Update: I appreciated the quick (automated) response to my review, but have not been contacted further for any true resolution. read more

AWFUL: Moving from Washington DC to UK with Hilldrup has been a disastrous experience. Numerous pieces of furniture damaged or even completely crashed (such as in the case of a 250 year old table, which has previously managed transport between 8 different duty stations, including Europa /Bangladesh return, without a scratch). Our furniture in general was inappropriately and insufficiently wrapped and when the Hilldrup packers even stand on top of it afterwords (footprints allover boxes and wrapped items) it can surprise no one that the damages are so serious and numerous. Be aware, that although you are promised by the Hilldrup representative that the clothes hanging in your closet (suits,jackets,dresses,skirts,shirts etc.)will be hung on poles in 'wardrobe boxes' then that is not what happens in reality. Also be aware, that when the packing exercise is over and you are asked by the packers 'just to put your initials here and here' you are supposed to notice that your clothes which is already packed and in the van, has not been packed as promised. I did not check but had I done so I would have seen that it had been packed in a 'lay down wardrobe' or something to that effect, which turns out to mean: suits, silk dresses, wool designer jackets, Max Mara coats etc, crammed into cardboard boxes, in big bundles, together with the hangers, jewelry boxes, shoes and smaller pieces of furniture. If English is not your mother tongue, then how are you supposed to even guess that a 'lay down wardrobe' is not a wardrobe?? All of our clothes is so wrinkle that it will have to go to the dry cleaners. Its gonna cost us a fortune and Hilldrup states that we will have to cover the costs involved ourselves. Also be aware that although you spend time and money on crates being produced for the safe (HAHA) transport of your antique paintings, as Hilldrup does not bother to add paper or other types of protection inside the crate, your antiques paintings are, not surprisingly, left to rattle around while crossing the Atlantic and again, not surprisingly, as a result, severely damaged. Likewise, be aware that although the Hilldrup representative walks around with you in your home and takes note of what your most valuable decorative items are and subsequently tells you to gather them in a specific place so they will be given specific attention by the packers, then he is just joking with you. We did as instructed and gathered valuable antiques such as Murano glass, Asian teapots, etc. What we realized when we unpacked in UK was that Hilldrup had put all of these items in one regular cardboard box without any additional protection. As if it were cheap utensils from IKEA. Again, not surprisingly items were damaged/destroyed. The movers who unpacked in UK stated that they had never seen anything like it. My husband who prior to our joint moves also moved extensively (Iraq, Guinee,Haiti,Ethiopia etc) has not either experienced such a careless and unprofessional packing and storage, -ever. read more

Hilldrup (United) Moving & Storage - This was a repeat move with Hilldrup. We made a conscious decision to go with Hilldrup this next time around based on the positive experience we had with them during a prior move as well as their apparent renowned reputation. Their staff (dispatcher, packers, truck driver) have been friendly and attentive. A serious concern in this recent move was the underestimate as well as the lack of a scale to weigh each item/box before our eyes. It was off by 4 tons (how could Hilldrup's Estimator miss 4 tons of weight?) and additional days of packing, resulting in several thousands of dollars of out-of-pocket expenses not covered by my employer, impositions on our schedules & on the staff to work overtime on two packing/loading days, and the lack of foresight/planning on our part to purge more reasonable amounts of excess weight had the Estimator done his job right. On that note, a sole Hilldrup complaint filed a supposed 'termination' because the employee would not agree to 'over-invoicing a client'...while other bloggers note Hilldrup's trend towards lower estimates than other movers (likely just to "win" the contract). Wonder whether something fishy is going on here. So NOT pleased -- real understatement. read more

This is an update to my original post. Four words: BEST MOVING COMPANY EVER. Despite a rocky start during a very busy posting season, the seven guys who showed up got the packing and loading done in eight hours. They did a door to door move and arrived exactly when they said they would. It seems like other companies hire guys off the street corner by the liquor store when they need guys to unpack a truck upon arrival. Hilldrup had the same guys who picked up the HHG deliver the HHG. They were courteous, polite, and kind to my kids who wanted to help move things. I even found two of them playing football with my boys during the 30 min break they took to eat lunch. Best of all, nothing was broken. It was the best move we've ever had. I highly recommend them for any and all moves in the Northern VA/DC Metro area. Nice work Chuck, Tim, and the rest of the guys! Mayflower made an inherently stressful and expensive situation exponentially more stressful and expensive. I strongly recommend against using them for any move. I used Mayflower to move from Washington, D.C. to Salt Lake City, Utah. It sub-contracted with Alpha/Hilldrup in Stafford, Virginia for my move. They packed my belongings on April 26th, and I was given a window of May 2-10 for delivery in Utah. However, their salesman, Ben Frakes, told me that things "usually" arrive toward the beginning of that window. That was the first lie. Instead, my belongings did not arrive until May 13th, seventeen days after they were packed. Turns out they sat in a warehouse in Virginia for eight days. Then they were packed on a truck with items for another family for delivery in Denver beginning on May 10. So from the moment my belongings left Virginia, Mayflower/Alpha/Hilldrup knew they would not meet their delivery commitment to me. Despite this, my "moving specialist," Ann Carvajal, kept telling me that my belongings would arrive on time--another lie. When it became clear they could not, I spoke with her manager, Mary Rodgers, who gave me conflicting and inaccurate information each time we spoke. The truck--already late--literally went over one thousand miles out of its way and drove from Denver to Boise, before doubling back to me in Utah. Mary promised that I would receive additional compensation for these problems, but I did not--another lie. And all this time I was paying rent in Utah and a mortgage in DC, while sleeping in my parent's basement because Mayflower/Alpha/Hilldrup was unable to perform the only task for which they exist. I emailed the Alpha/Hilldrup president and did not even receive the courtesy of a response. All this for $5500 for a one bedroom. In addition, multiple items were broken beyond repair and they lost the shelf pins for two cabinets, rendering them basically useless. The only reason I have given two stars is because the men who did the actual moving in DC and Utah were very professional and competent. Everyone else there is absolutely incompetent and dishonest. I strongly advise against using them. read more

They are terrible! I scheduled an appt in advance, and they simply did not show up. When I called to find out where they were, I was told they simply forgot. They deeply apologized for the oversight and recommend other movers because now they were booked solid. Meanwhile, I have 3 weeks to relocate and no movers. Unprofessional! Unreliable! Watching my daughter sleep on a air mattress in a new city for two weeks because " the truck is already full" makes me doubt this is a good company. Someone needs to learn how to load freight and become knowledgeable about on-time delivery. Just because you are "within your window" does not mean good service. We all know you have to give at least one star to write a review, so here's my pass. This people are bizarre. I called, they sent an "estimator" who went through the house, my studio and my husband's tool room. He was cool with our being back in the woods with a narrow path down to a narrow drive. He said a shuttle truck could get in and transport my stuff to a bigger van parked down the street. Cool. I told him I would pack until I gave out and they could finish the packing. He said that would be fine. Cool. Then, on the appointed day, the crew showed up with no shuttle truck, looked in our house and left. They told my husband they were going to get the shuttle truck, but they never came back. I called the office and they said the moving men said I was not ready to move. I reminded her of that morning when she and I spoke on the phone that I told her I still had things to be packed and she said they had packing materials on the truck. I called the estimator THREE TIMES and each time he said he would get right back to me but never did. The next time I heard from them was later that night when Janyce called me and said they could schedule another date THREE or FOUR weeks down the line. All of this for $6,500 to move 75 miles away. No way. NOT. NEVER. read more

I hired Hilldrup to move me long distance in April 2017. One of the reasons I hired them was because they said: "Once your stuff is on the truck, it won't move until it gets to your house." To make a long story short, 5 boxes of my things were missing on delivery and they are still missing -- I've never gotten them. When the delivery people where here, I told them 5 boxes were missing. They said: "There is nothing on the truck, you have everything." That was not the truth. In addition to the boxes, a dresser mirror was installed dangerously incorrectly, my bed frame was broken, and a shelf was broken beyond repair. I'ts been months since my move, and still the thought of the horrible service I got from Hilldrup still bothers me. I was compensated $150 for those 5 boxes -- which was an insult, $150 for the broken shelf, and they refunded the $100 tip I gave their driver and helpers (nice). Hilldrup did get someone to repair the mirror and bed frame, at no cost to me. My rating would be minus-zero, zero but that's not an option. Their customer service told me: "This has never happened before." Right! Yes, things can happen when you move -- but the company should have enough integrity to make it right. If you want a dependable, honest moving company, I'd think again about choosing Hilldrup, because Hilldrup did not make it right for me. read more

I recently had Hilldrup relocate me across the U.S. Sandy orchestrated everything from their home office. She checked in with me daily from the time the movers arrived until they arrived at our new home. Mike, the owner/operator of the moving semi was very pleasant to deal with. The entire operation from start to finish was the epitome of efficiency. On both sides of the move the movers where extremely hard workers and incredibly efficient. Granted, on top of this, I requested the move on a Thursday FOR THE NEXT TUESDAY!!! They notified me almost immediately that they would be able to work around my schedule and get me moved with 5 days notice! My father was moved dozens of times and he even commented on how great the movers were. I would not hesitate to use them again. I would recommend them to anyone! read more

I had an excellent experience with Hilldrup Moving & Storage out of Stafford VA. The team was Bryan, Brian and Alan. Very smart, experienced, personable men that take a lot of pride in their work. I don't know about you but I love being around people who like what they do and care about the service they offer. They asked me all the right questions, took great care of my belongings and kept me informed along the way. As they protected my beloved art pieces I'm completely confident that absolutely no damage will happen to these pieces. And, my sofa looked like the Michelin man after they protected it. It was so interesting to see how they protected and packed each and every piece of furniture. Honestly, I was sorry to see them leave. The team delivered my belongings into Hilldrup's storage crates in their facility until we move into our next home. You have got to be kidding if you hire this company. I moved from SC to FL right before Thanksgiving 2017 and first they underestimated how many boxes they would need, they were staffed. I had several items stolen that included cash, iPod, jewelry, and others that are still "missing". The carelessness of the packers is unbelievable, they just threw books, photos in boxes without care, they packed my iMac computers with T-shirts from my closet, they were supposed to be out of my old house by noon on Monday for me to have time to clean, at 8:30pm they finally admitted they did not have room for everything and would need to call for a 2nd truck on Tuesday morning they almost caused me to not close on my house, I had to pay for a house cleaner to clean the house. The movers are dirty they left candy wrappers, water bottles all over the house, and yard. They hired 3rd party to disassemble desks, washer and dryer and a 220g aquarium all of which were damaged and destroyed. I've been dealing with them on item replacement (I had the FULL Mac Daddy Insurance too) for now over 4+ months I have 9 pages of items. Word of advice IF you decide to hire them have someone beside each packer every step of the way for every box, by your own specialized designer tape to place over their tape so you will know it's not been opened at all. For every item they package put that on the High Dollar claim page so if anything and I mean anything is damaged, missing you can say its on that form. Oh my 2nd truck it showed up over a week later and no one knew what was on it till it showed up at my house. The team that showed up on my house for the move in day they hired guys from Craigs List and paid them cash out the window and they were just told to unload the truck as quickly as possible so everything was just put in my garage when they got tired of coming inside the house and putting it in the correct room as it was taking to long. read more

I chose Hilldrup because of the top ratings the sales person cited about their company, that they treated every piece of furniture like it was their own, that everything was shrink wrapped and blanket wrapped as well, that they were on time, reliable, and just simply outstanding. I had two other quotes that were over 10% less, but decided to go with them because of this reputation. NC to IL. I was vehement that we move out on a certain day and move in on certain day, but they dodged that artfully and gave us a preferred day and a back up day. There was no way they were going to make the preferred day. The driver never contacted me that he was going to be a day late, so I sat around for several hours waiting, called Hilldrup and they said he wouldn't be there until the next day. The customer service people were very apologetic and showed empathy, but who cares, they already had been paid before they driver even left for IL. I informed the salesman, customer service manager, talked to the dispatcher and all fed me the sorry line. I was told I was going to be contacted by the GM, but I am still waiting for that call. They dented and scratched several pieces of furniture, dented a couple of walls, broke a chair in three pieces that they claimed was broken when they packed it, broke a piece of lawn art and slyly put the broken piece back so we "wouldn't notice." I honestly think you could do better with two men and a truck. I bought both crews lunch, tipped them and made them feel at home in an attempt to make sure all went smoothly. So, Hilldrup, your customer service and salespeople need to observe a real move before you claim such accolades because it was the worst moving experience of my life...and we have moved 10 times. The entire experience with Hilldrup was great! The estimator who came to my home was professional and very knowledgeable; Ann, my coordinator, was also professional, knowledgeable and answered all of my questions promptly and respectfully and with a very caring manner; the packers did an excellent job - nothing was broken or damaged. I was concerned about an antique mirror (over 100 yrs old), antique marble topped coffee table (70 yrs old). fine china and crystal - i didn't need to worry. Hilldrup made sure everything was packed and/or crated as needed, therefore, everything made the trip from Alexandria, VA to Austin, TX in perfect condition. When I needed to get the marble top uncrated in Austin, Ann, from Hilldrup arranged it all and the third party vendor did an excellent job, as well. I highly recommend Hilldrup to anyone making a move - they have a great team in place to handle everything! read more

Although the quantity of household goods moved was fairly small, my experience with Hilldrup Moving and Storage was excellent. Robert, who estimated the move, was very professional and accurate. He provided the quote the same evening. Kelly, the move coordinator, was outstanding. She answered my questions patiently and kept me well-informed throughout the process. Even though the final delivery was a couple of days late, that was no big deal. Kelly kept me well-informed throughout so I knew what to expect and I knew far enough ahead of time that I could adjust my schedule. The crew who did the packing and moving were fantastic - they were careful, methodical and pleasant. They arrived on-time and finished quickly. BAD!!! REALLY BAD!! CARELESS!! Hilldrup messed up my international move and refused to acknowledge it and make it right -- causing me a lot of time and money in the new country. I contracted with Hilldrup to move 2500 lbs. and told them that my company would pay for it. They estimated the furniture in my house that I wanted to ship at 3300 lbs. Then after they picked up the shipment and weighed it for billing purposes, called me with the "good news" that the shipment only weighed @1280 lbs. I informed them that it was not good news that only about 1/2 of my allotted pounds was shipped because it was going to cause me lots of shopping time and lots of money to buy things on my new country's economy. Hilldrup had plenty of time to come back and get the other stuff I wanted shipped but the coordinator and her supervisor said they didn't have the authority to make those decisions and that the vp couldn't be reached for days. Hilldrup could have made another shipment at a later date but they chose to offer @ $700 settlement on my loss of @ $7,000 shipping fees. How does $700 make up for my losing $7,000. in shipping fees that my company would have paid for me? Hilldrup's coordinator still doesn't understand that she has caused me shopping time and money to replace goods that I already own. She still doesn't understand that her company could have charged my company $14,000 instead of $7,000 for this move. She doesn't understand the inconvenience and stress that she caused me during my move. The Hilldrup employees I dealt with didn't seem to have bad attitudes, they seemed to be educated people, they were pleasant. So why did they so poorly manage my international move? While the international side of Hilldrup was mishandling my international move, the national side was setting me up for a really bad national move. Don't hire Hilldrup! Hilldrup did me in on a national move about 12 days later. All of their mistakes were unnecessary. It was so stressful.: They showed up not knowing they were supposed to pack my stuff. They didn't have any packing materials or boxes. They used the boxes that I had in my house until Hilldrup sent packing boxes from Stafford. (Is your house close to Stafford?) They were supposed to arrive to unload the truck at noon. They arrived about ten to 4pm. They had no idea what my apt. number was nor how to contact me to tell me that they had arrived. They didn't park their truck in the space that I had reserved for them. The space was reserved until 4pm and there isn't any other space to park on this city street so they parked in a busy intersection near a school. This didn't endear me to my neighbors. They were supposed to be finished by 5pm because my apt. building doesn't allow moving after 5pm because there is only one elevator. The crew leader insisted on off-loading that day although I told them my building was going to fine me for moving after 5pm. The crew leader said he was contracted. His truck didn't say Hilldrup. Afterward, when I asked Hilldup about his status, Hilldrup says they don't hire contractors. What is the truth? The crew was great. They were very careful of my stuff. They don't work for Hilldrup, they are contracted. The coordinator had already gone for the day when my move occurred and couldn't be contacted. The crew leader threatened to make the crew carry my furniture up 8 flights of stairs in an unairconditioned building in June because of the elevator hours stopping at 5. That would have been inhumane. The surveyor from Hilldrup told me that something would be put down over my hardwood floors to protect them. We already know they showed up without any packing materials. The crew was very careful of my floors. All of this was avoidable. Hilldrup just doesn't care. read more

We moved from Charlotte, NC to suburban Phoenix, Az in summer of 2014. We had to stay in rented quarters for 2 months while our new house was being finished, so we stored the goods with Hilldrup's warehouse in Charlotte. When the new house was ready in mid Sept. we had them move in our goods. We were appalled at the amount of damage and missing items. One of my pistols was stolen and we reported it to the police. Several boxes were missing & some items were not inventoried & tagged. It was really a sloppy job!!! The claims agent sent out a furniture repairman and he did a good job on the broken stuff. The biggest problem we had was getting them to cut a check for the stuff that was missing or beyond repair. We repeatedly corresponded by phone & e-mail for over 10 months before finally getting the check. I never had such problems before with other movers!!! read more

I give Hilldrup my highest ratings! I shopped around for movers (MD to FL), and studied all the government publications provided by this company. This caused me to go to an official government agency that keeps track of the size of company fleets and the number of customer complaints. Not only did Hilldrup have the best ratings of the three well-known companies I checked, but they also gave me the best prices. I couldn't be happier with the in-home salesperson, and on the days of the move I was impressed by the packers, loaders, truck driver, and the unloaders. Everyone was hard working, well-trained, polite, in uniform, and they took great care to protect my furniture and property. Heavy pieces of furniture were carried up and down stairs (my origin home had 3 levels) without any damage to walls or furniture. I couldn't believe how well they did moving the heavy piano. The workers were fast and efficient. I had no losses, nothing missing, and nothing broken. I am a military dependent who has been through about 20 moves in my lifetime, and this was the easiest and best move I have had. I would give Hilldrup my highest recommendation! read more
