I've been going here since I was a kid. My grandparents were good friends with the owners, being from the Netherlands themselves. They literally have the best Bismarck you have ever had here, light and fluffy cream, perfectly golden brown pastry, mild high quality chocolate icing. The woorstenbroodje (sausage pastry) have been a dutch breakfast treat on Xmas for my family since I was a boy until now at 35 and has never changed. Also, the almond stick and raisin rolls are a staple as well for Christmas and good any time. If you are in Bothell, you must visit here or you will regret not having stopped in to experience the friendly culture and delicious plethora of mouth watering treats they offer everyday. read more

Snobby east coaster here who wants to be completely in love with this place because it has all the charm of a traditional, small town bakery, but the quality and robustness of flavor just aren't quite there. The price is definitely right though, which is why I will happily stop in for a few donuts for my kids because we end up spending maybe $5. I will say though, their apple fritter is BOMB. Really annoyed with the staff though, that every time we walk in (my kids are excited for donuts, okay? they're not being unruly), that we're greeted with a collective eye roll. I definitely wouldn't recommend this as a place to bring your children on the way to the park. Not a friendly place unless you're over 30. read more

I want so badly to like this place but it is sooooo awful! All of the items in the left case sit there for days and taste so stale (as they would if they were sitting here). A bakery should have everything fresh baked that morning not things sitting for days. (Walk by anytime they are closed and you can see all the items sitting on the shelves for the next day.) As for the items that are made that day, I would say they're very average. And for the service, not friendly. read more

I've always wanted to stop in, so last week my daughter and I popped in. I ordered a rum ball, a cream puff, a cinnamon roll to go and chocolate chip cookies to go. We sat down with a latte and had our cream puff and rum ball. It was horrid. The cream puff was so stale the cream inside had spoiled I spit it into my napkin. I told the woman she may want to check her stock of cream puffs, she told me the green tint and the separation of oil and cream in the middle was totally normal. the rum ball was thick and had no consistency of rum ball I've ever had. We were scared to eat the rest so we tossed it when we got outside. No apologies from staff about the cream puff no refund and they were actually really put off that I would question the puff. I'll never go again and I wouldn't recommend anyone else venture in. Not sure how they've stayed in business so long. read more

Very disappointed in the $90 cake I ordered from them. It looks very little like the cake I brought them a picture of to make. They said they could make the exact cake I brought them a picture of. Instead the bunnies they made for our cake look nothing like what I wanted and are pretty ugly. They never bothered to call us to tell us that they were making this big of a design decision without us knowing. They never even called to say the cake was ready for pick up which would have been nice. When we got the cake one of the bunnies ears was also broken off. I will not recommend this place or visit them again. I'm sad to say that because the party is tomorrow I will be using this cake because I told people there would be a cake. Delicious food, TERRIBLE customer service. We walked in, the worker was helping people at a table plan for an event I guess. I wasn't expecting her to help us, but she didn't acknowledge us at all, not even a simple hi. So we stood there for about 5 minutes, no one was at the counter, until the worker helping the couple said that we could ring the bell for service. We did, the woman that came out from the back was very blunt, also was not friendly and made no small talk, just seeming to want our money. Well, my apple fritter was delicious, but it was seriously hampered by how rude I was treated. A first time customer I will NOT be coming here again , and I advise the same for others. read more

I stop by here every once in a while - I figure you must really know the favorites, and it will be a satisfactory visit. My first was great, but I have not been able to repeat. One heavy suggestion, for the small bakes; pastries and the like - BUY BEFORE NOON. Otherwise those goods are just plain dry, and it is with heavy heart when I make this mistake, and head home with a wasted $20 worth of eclairs, buns and pecan rolls, only to have no one in the family will eat (no matter how gorgeous they look) because they are too dry, on way to the staleland. If it is the breads, cookies, candy/bakes, you'll do better. But for those mainstay sweet bakes, you will feel ripped off. Counter help may consider a slight discount as the day wanes, but they aren't that nice anyway. read more

Bought a cake for a birthday. Cake was ok nothing to get overly excited about. But when I came in to purchase the cake the wait for service was crazy. The frustrating thing is that there was only one person helping customers and the others were just stocking the shelves and hardly glancing at the line of people waiting to be helped. I came in last week around three thirty. I left feeling meh about my experience. The customer service was ok, nothing special. The apple fritter I had was really good and my husband got a Bismark and loved it but I was extremely disappointed with our "custard" filled cannoli. It tasted like it was shortening based buttercream and the cannoli itself was chewy and soft, not crispy at all. To be honest, it ruined my memory of the apple fritter and just said that it wasn't as good as I had hoped. Probably won't be back. read more

I judge a bakery first on their bread. The donuts and cookies are secondary to me so I'm ignoring some of the reviews that are all about sugar. That said, I really like their donuts with the chocolate fried egg theme, but that's not why I come here. Hillcrest bread is excellent. We love the garlic sourdough. The 60 % wheat loaf is the only bread my youngest kid will eat as a sandwich. All of their breads have a short ingredient list. Someone praised the cookies, and on this one, I have to disagree. The cookies we've tried were always brittle, to the point of tasting stale, and for the price, honestly, I bake way better cookies at home. The sales people are friendly, unless you fail to pick up a special order on time. Then expect to be rudely chided in front of other paying customers. read more

I am so confused how to rate them. Ordered a birthday cake for my 1 year old and the cake was extremely delicious. Liked the frosting and the decor. 5 Star for the cake. Now coming to the worst part, I completely forgot that bakery closes by 5 and had plans to pick up the cake at 5:30, when I called them at 5:05 to check for pickup they said store is closed. The tone was really rude and the receptionist almost hung up on us saying she can't help it. I was so awestruck about how worst the service is and she was not ready to confirm if the cake is there or not. I told her the cake is for party and we need it but she had no patience to hear any of it and was more concerned about her 8 hrs job. I pleaded her to hold the cake for 15 more mins so that I can pick it up and finally she agreed stating I should be there in 20 mins else she will leave. I should accept, it was my fault to pick up the order before 5 but I would say they should give the customers a call if the cake is not picked for that day. We almost ended up no cake for LO first Bday party. 0 stars for the service. read more

Seriously amazing baked goods... Fantastic muffins, incredible bread, heavenly donuts-- wow! Bavarian cream donuts are my go-to donut and the one I got from Hillcrest Bakery yesterday was possibly the best I have ever had. My husband agreed. I could go on and on about everything I've had there, but instead I'll just tell you to give them a visit next time you're in the area. There's so much good stuff to choose from, you'll definitely find something you like. It may not look like much from the outside of that tiny, old building in downtown Bothell, but they have somehow fit fifty pounds of goodness into a five pound sack... so to speak. ;o) read more

Only been in once, so far... I had an apple fritter, and this is not a usual choice for me. It just looked really good, and I wasn't disappointed! The fritter was not greasy! Very important... There were fresh chunks of apple inside, and it was super light and delicious. I would definitely come back to try more goodies here. read more

I picked up Maple Bars, Apple Fritters, and Old Fashioned from Hillcrest and from the fancy, dancy donut place in Mill Creek (Frost, conveniently located by Cold Stone Creamery and my Pilates place). TO my great surprise- three of us chose the Hillcrest Bakery donuts as the superior donut. Not so surprising we made a hefty dent in the 12 donuts (and a few cookies) that I thought our taste test would require. The apple fritter actually had the apple taste. BTW- why can't they put frosting on these maple bars like they were a wedding cake. Who doesn't love frosting and loads of it? read more

What can I say, this place is awesome. Everything there tastes great, and the people who work there are super nice and knowledgeable. I heartily endorse the muffins, which are the best I have found in Seattle, but they also make a damn good cake, as long as you order ahead of time. The cinnamon roll was excellent. The dough was tender, flavorful and baked to perfection, even throughout. The icing was delicious and decadent. Not heavy or over done on the outside and gummy on the inside. I can't remember eating a better roll. I will return to try other goodies. read more
