I bought a birthday cake here last week. This bakery has been a family favorite for years especially for the danishes. I didn't have time to do my usual birthday cake option so I went with Hillcrest this time. It's the first cake I've had there. There was a line out the place but they had 3 staff members working and they were cheerful. I scored because I got the last small cake and it was Oreo. Elise knew exactly what to ask and how to guide me through the process in an efficient, smooth, friendly way. I told her my vision for a monster truck cake for my 3 yr old son, and she took the reins (in the best way!) We spoke about design, flavor, theme, size, all of it, and I was so happy with her guidance creativity and professionalism, plus the follow up email. It seems more and more rare now days to encounter people with those warm & welcoming soft skills, The cake turned out insanely cute. Everything I'd hoped for. And, equally important, it tasted delicious. The frosting was yummy and sweet without being intense or off putting. The filling was light and creamy. The cake was spongy and moist. This was wedding cake level quality @ my son's birthday party and so many people commented on how great the cake tasted. None was left behind on plates, put it that way! The kids in the group really enjoyed the crunch of the pretend mud. It had texture, it had visual appeal, and it was so tasty. What a delightful experience. When I walked into Hillcrest Bakery, I was overwhelmed in a very good way! They offer a huge variety of items: breads, cakes, pies, cookies, donuts... and everything looks so tasty. I think I hovered around the cases for 5 minutes haha. I really appreciated the employees for checking if I had any questions as some things weren't labeled. The girls are absolutely so sweet and thoughtful, and I never felt pressured or embarrassed while browsing. It's a cute little shop with a lot of family history on their walls, and you can clearly see their commitment to their baking traditions hasn't wavered throughout the generations. There's a small parking lot which is super convenient since street parking can be filled up easily on the weekends! Also, their prices are so fair and reasonable considering they bake everything from scratch. My consistent pick up is the frosted apple spice donut (they're also offered glazed). Called a week before thanksgiving and ordered two pies, pecan and pumpkin. Called Wednesday morning to see if I could pick them up a few hours early than planned and they were able to accommodate. The pies tasted amazing! My only disappointment was the crust on the pecan pie.. it looked like it had been broken or cut off. The bakery itself was full of delicious creations, and appeared very clean. Probably won't buy pies there again, but if I'm in the neighborhood I would definitely stop in again. read more

Took a quick trip from work in Woodinville, I had planned to visit a newish bakeshop in Bothell. However, saw yet another annoying long line. So made a split second detour to Hillcrest Bakery instead, thankfully a much shorter line. Plus they have been in business since 1934, got to be doing something right as a local OG indie! There's ample parking, also both indoor and outdoor seating, variety of baked goods, but kind of dour, stoic counter staff. I had limited time, no time to dawdle. I purchased a chocolate ring, a bacon maple bar, and a pair of beef sausage rolls. Later at home, the doughnuts were deemed tasty. The sausage rolls held up overnight in the fridge. It would be great to see how they compare to ones from sites in Redmond and Seattle. Nice to see a classic, old school bakeshop in downtown Bothell going strong! read more

I was searching for places offering gluten-free pastries near me and found this little gem in Bothell. I must have driven past it many times in the past few years and not taken notice, but I was thrilled to see gf options in their reviews. I stopped in early and found the tiny shop to be mostly the pastry counter with a couple of small tables to sit and have coffee. The person helping me was not the friendliest, but when I asked about gf options, they directed me to the couple choices they had. I went with an oat bar and chocolate cake, which both ended up being delicious, and a great almond cookie that tasted like Marzipan. The non-gf things I got for my husband were met with mixed reviews, but he did like the cannoli with chocolate cream. Hopefully, they'll add to their gf selection, and we can visit more often! read more

Disappointing! The cannoli was soft and filled with an overly sugary frosting. The real issue I had was with the sourdough as this was over proved, not fully cooked in the middle, dense and I ended up throwing most of it away! Shame as I like proper bakeries but the search is still on as this was not a good experience. read more

We needed a special order cake and Hillcrest did a tremendous job. Working with Tory, the bakery designed a perfect 80's style cake. They listed, offered wonderful suggestions and provided samples of various options. The event was cancelled, but with a 95th birthday this summer, we'll be back to order. read more

I recently moved to the area and walk by this place every morning with my dog and it always smells wonderful! Today I decided after walking my dog to head back out to try Hillcrest for a Friday morning treat and a few things to last through the weekend. I got a sausage roll (beef but they have pork or pork and sauerkraut), maple bar, and sprinkle donut. Service was great, really friendly and helped me immediately. They offered the warm up the sausage roll but I said no since I was walking home so I could heat it in my air fryer when I got home. I only wish they had packed my things in a small box because putting 2 donuts in 1 bag is always going to result in the frosting coming off one of them. I took a bite of the maple bar and it's good! I had a delicious buttermilk donut this morning with coffee. I also ordered a "large" cinnamon roll. Unbeknownst to me, the cinnamon roll was covered in cake frosting and came in a pastry box. I knew that would be expensive, and yes, the whole bill came to almost $9.00. It turns out the cinnamon roll is a day-old, dried out roll, coated in frosting to hide it's age. I consider that to be a scam. I think you have to watch out for this bakery, you may not be getting the fresh product you expect. I wouldn't recommend this bakery unless you are looking for a quick bite like a donut. I was hoping to get a few dozen cookies for an event, they only had one small size and then a few larger size to select from. Selection was slim. Ordered a few cannolis, never pass on them! Soggy. Great filling (chocolate although didn't taste like ricotta) but in a soggy shell was such a huge disappointment. Picked up a cake for a BBQ tonight, hoping it tastes good (low expectations now). It is packaged in a plastic container like I bought it at a Super Market. I asked for a sticker, no they didn't offer one, so our hosts would know where it came from in case they wanted to patronize this place. Sadest part was a couple ahead of me. They preordered and purchased a double tier cake with NO BOX to transport it in? They had to walk out scratching their heads how to get the cake home (and beyond). Definitely shouldn't be selling something you can't package. I can't believe the Health Department would even allow products leaving the store uncovered. Never coming back here. We are from out of town and usually go to Larsen's but it's to far to make the trip before our first event. Sad face. Went here on a Saturday afternoon! I stopped in and tried a sausage roll which was quite tasty. We got it warmed up. It was warmed in the microwave and it felt over cooked then so would get that again. The pastries and donuts were plentiful so next time I go, definitely would like to try more things including their Mexican wedding cookies! I haven't seen any of those in my usual stops. Since my goal was to try their donuts I have to rate this place base on that but the pastry that I did get was not bad at all. They are located within 2 minutes of countryside hahaha so I had to grab donuts here as well. I got their version of the buttermilk bar, the fritter, a sausage roll and a regular maple donut with cream filled. The sausage roll was interesting as it had sauerkraut in it. The fritter was gigantic but I think it fell short in texture, there was some apple chunks in there. The old fashioned was pretty standard and the cream filled Donut was a nice change from all the other donuts but still pretty standard. Overall, I would say I would come back to try their pastries as it looks like they are european based but not so much for their donuts since there is literally a donut shop 2-3 minutes away read more
