I visited D.C. From July 7-12, 2017. It was crazy hot during our stay. 90s with high humidity every day. I say this because on the drive down, my AC unit quit working and I felt desperate to get it repaired before returning home. Fortunately, we used the Metro during our stay. I called Hill on a Friday and was told they could see me Monday morning. The gentleman took the time to explain what was probably wrong with the car which made me feel better about taking my car to an unknown place. I arrived on Monday at 830 AM. I dropped it off, and at 10 AM they called to say they'd found the leak and that I also needed an oil change. At 1130 AM, the car was finished. The bill was only $205! I couldnt have been more pleased with the service, attentiveness and excellent work. The garage is located within a mile of a metro station and is in a residential neighborhood. Stay away. The owner, David, was very unprofessional to the point of being verbally abusive after we discovered his shady billing procedures and had the audacity to push back. I'm not sure I've ever experienced such poor or dishonest service. Which says a lot for the auto repair industry. I was told one price and charged another at payment time, I was also told the amount I paid for diagnostic testing (charges which were not disclosed prior to incurring the cost) would be deducted from my final bill, but then told they don't apply, and on top of it all, when I had the audacity to mention these inconsistencies, David, the owner's response was "I've been in business over 30 years and received many awards, so if you have a problem, that's your problem." I have taken my car here a number of times in the past, but will never do it again after such unprofessional and downright crooked behavior. In reference to the response provided by the business below, I would say: Number one, I'm not sure why you think it's relevant to make a reference my mother, but that's weird and mildly creepy. Further evidence of your inability to keep things purely professional. Number two, I'm not "frustrated with my vehicle," I'm frustrated with duplicitous billing practices and unprofessional behavior. I have no idea what any of the random recollections with regard to previous service or a fictitious person named John Cooper have to do with the central issue, which is a business that feels perfectly fine offering a credit and then reneging on that once the bill comes. read more

It's rare to find someone in any profession these days who both loves what thaey do and knows their stuff backwards and forwards. These guys do both, and it shows. I have been going here for 10+ years now, and I have yet to be disappointed. I even take every car to them before purchasing just to get it checked out. To this date, they have never been wrong. They can spot a problem months before symptoms start. And the extensive make and model knowledge they have lets them know what is LIKELY to go worng with every vehicle you bring them. I've been taking my 2010 Rav4 here for years. For some reason, I went to the dealer for my last service. They quoted me $3,550 for repairs and maintenance. I was floored. I went back to Hill Auto with the quote and the explanation of what the dealer said needed to be repaired. After looking at the car, it turned out that almost 75% of the things the dealer wanted to repair or replace weren't in need of the service. Even when I asked if he checked one of the items that seemed most concerning. he said there was no way he would replace that and charge me for something that wasn't even close to being in need of repair. I was really happy with the work these guys did for me. I had to have a bumper replaced and some other minor work done. They found me a really good deal on an aftermarket bumper, quoted me the total price for the job which was quite reasonable, and when the work was done the bill matched the quote. I would definitely shop around before coming here. I brought my car here because of the previous positive reviews, but they quoted me a very high price for a repair job. After checking around, I found the same parts online for less than 1/3 of the price after shipping & taxes...which led me to check a few other shops on the labor charges. Turns out, they also were overcharging me there by $100. I went to a different shop & even after paying this place's diagnostic fee & for a 2nd tow to the new shop, I came out paying less than half what this place was going to charge me for the same job...needless to say, I won't be coming back here. read more

I just moved away from DC, but want to give compliments to my mechanic for the past five years. David and his staff at Hill Auto were always honest with me, always fit me in right away, and did good work. They're definitely a little expensive, which is the only reason I give them four stars instead of five, but it's an expensive neighborhood so that's almost to be expected. Living nearby, I found their prices to be worth the convenience and honesty. I know at least one other person who lives on the Hill and has been using Hill Auto for years and years, and she swears by them even more than I do. Only once in five years of oil changes and miscellaneous repairs did they ever not do the job right (misidentifying a rattling metallic noise in my engine), but they got it right when I brought it in a second time and counted the cost of the first job towards the second. If I ever return to DC, which is certainly possible, I'll definitely go back to David and Hill Auto. read more

I have used these guys twice now. They are friendly and accommodating. The first time was pretty standard for oil change and break inspection. They found some other issues and told me I could choose to address them now or not, warned me of the price, and let me decide what they did. Fair and QUICK! Same day service! The second time I, like Ruby G., needed help clearing my car for inspection. It had several issues which were SUPER EXPENSIVE. However, I really needed the car to pass and didn't have time to shop around or try to do any band-aid type work. I needed the real deal. Well, again SAME DAY SERVICE. They even offered to have me come back before I head to the DMV and they'd make sure it would pass. Well the check engine light came back on within a few days. They happily took the car over night, checked the computer several times and made even more repairs. The best part, he didn't charge me!! He understood it should've been handled the first time, realized I already paid an arm and a leg and that I was desperate. Well it worked, passed the DMV tests the next day and got to carry on with my life. Great folks here!! read more

I'm a big fan of Hill Auto - always feel that David's primary concern is his clients' safety. They've been able to fix problems that the dealership couldn't figure out - finally got my a/c working properly instead of just recharging the darn thing. They also have perspective on what needs to be done immediately, versus what is relatively minor and can wait. I don't have comparative costs, but but it seems to me that they're at least competitive with other shops, and more economical than dealerships. Highly recommended. read more

Hill Auto Repair has a great mechanic. They are honest, patient, and professional. In December I had an emergency with my car. I was driving from a mechanic to mechanic and each one of them was referring me to a dealer. I came to Hill Auto Repair and they right on the spot knew what was wrong with my car. They in detail explained to me what was wrong. Over the few days when I was traveling the owner was updating me with the repair. I happy to admit that even once I haven't felt that I was taken advantage of because I'm a female. I recommend this place and defiantly I will be back at least once a year for a check-up. read more

Terrible Price. Terrible Service. They charged almost $900 for a basic tune up that another shop would do for around $250. Shop said that the tune up would be done in a day or two but it took over a week. The shop said that the car was fixed, but it still has problems that the tune up did not fix. I dropped my car off before work and dropped my keys through the door along with a note explaining that my back lights were not working. By 9am I had received a phone call that my car was ready, and the back lights had all been replaced. When I called to let them know what time I would be by to pick up my car and pay the bill, they told me there would be no charge! And sure enough when I picked up my car there was no bill. I had some major repairs there a few weeks ago, so it was nice to not have to spend more money this time around. I'll definitely be back. read more

These guys, David especially, are truly the best! My fiance and I brought our car in for a checkup and David told us that all of our brake pads had to be replaced, at a cost of around $700, $400 for front, $300 for the rear. I asked him to only do the front brakes for $400 because our wedding was 5 weeks away and we were really pinching pennies. David replied that if we would pay $400 for the front brakes, he would throw in the back brakes as a wedding present! I was blown away. A little less than a year later, we brought the same car in for an oil change/wheel alignment, and David noticed that there was some wear on the brake pads, and fixed it free of charge, because we had the work done there. They are very fair on pricing and are very up front with costs and time. We will not only go back but will recommend them to friends! read more

I wouldn't say this place is inexpensive, but I got what I paid for (and then some): a solution to my car problem and customer service that went above and beyond. (I will admit up front that my choice to keep an old car running is not entirely rational.) My 13 year-old VW was looking like it wouldn't pass DC inspection this summer because of an emissions-related engine code for a vacuum hose leak. I came to Hill Auto as a last ditch effort to save my car after sinking $1000 into it with a mechanic in Rockville failed to solve the problem. Hill Auto diagnosed the problem and replaced a part for a few hundred dollars (not cheap, but fair, especially in comparison with my previous mechanic) -- and said I would get through the DMV inspection with no problem. To my dismay, when I took my car to inspection a few days later, the check-engine light came back on -- and I failed. When I returned to Hill Auto with my "FAIL" inspection report, the manager looked horrified and stated he would take care of the problem. The next day, he called to let me know that he'd found an additional leak, replaced the part, and had his mechanic take it through DC inspection -- and this time it passed. He charged me for the part but not the labor. Three months later, my car is still working better than it has in years, and the check engine light has not come back on. This is the first time since 2010 that my car has gone three months with no more than an oil change, and for me, not having to go through inspection was the kind of courtesy that makes a glowing review easy to write. When my VW inevitably decides to act up again, if I decide not to junk it, I'll take it back to Hill Auto because I know they'll get the job done. read more

We had our car repainted at Hill Auto after someone made a huge scratch on the whole passenger side of the car. The paint began to bubble and crack less than a year later, and Hill Auto was really gracious about stripping and repainting that panel. No charge for the second repair, of course, and they took the time to buff out an extra small scratch that had shown up in the meantime. read more

I just moved to DC last year, and my car broke down on me last week right across the street from Hill Auto repair. I called David who was highly recommended, so I decided what I thought was a great choice ended up being a bad one. First he said that I did not have gas in my car, which I knew was a lie because i Never let my gas gauge get under a half of tank, then David told me that my gas tank had kerosene and diesel gas mixed up. He said it would cost me $900 just to drain the gas from my car...Long story short, David wanted to charge me a little over $3k for nothing. I took it to another mechanic at the infiniti dealership. There was no diesel or kerosene in my tank just bad gas, and they change my fuel pump and spark plugs for $1050. Please do not trust David or better yet just get a second opinion. When you come there with certain cars, or work for with certain people he sees money signs... Never Again read more

I brought my car in to see if they could change a tail light that had gone out. It is a bit complicated with having to remove the reflector and the bulb is not standard size. I was surprised that as soon as I pulled in, a mechanic got to work. They had the bulb, and he was able to replace it within five minutes. I expected that it would take much longer and was very pleasantly surprised with the excellent service. What a hidden gem in our neighborhood. I know where to go the next time the car needs service. read more

I've been going to Hill Auto Repair for about 18 years. As a single woman living in the city, I needed a reliable, honest mechanic. A friend recommended David to me back in early 2001 and I've been going to him ever since. David the owner has always given me a fair price and returns my car back in a reasonable time frame (often same day turnaround). We have established a very good rapport and I trust him. He is quick to provide a diagnosis and when the dealership would say I need something done, David would tell me I could wait a few months or not. The dealer would quote one price and David would quote a price about a 1/3 of the dealership. When I had to get rid of a car, he was completely transparent with me and told me he didn't want to continue to take my money to fix a car he believed was dead (which my father agreed). He told me what car to purchase next and he told me he would see me when my warranty on my new car had expired. I couldn't be more pleased with David, Sam and the Hill Auto Repair staff...he knows my voice when I call and I've recommended him to many. read more

The reason I did so is because the service I received from Hill Auto was so good I felt obligated to write something. The other morning my car wouldn't start, so I had to get it towed to Hill Auto (an awesome way to start the day). As soon as we pulled in (unannounced) with the tow truck there was someone there to help. Throughout the day they kept me informed of the status of the car, and in the end actually dissuaded me from purchasing a new part that wasn't needed.
