Had my vehicle being serviced at local mechanic and they notified me that the PTU (Power Transfer Unit) that is part of transmission on all-wheel drive vehicles was leaking badly and needed to be replaced. They did not work on transmissions and advised me to take it to a transmission repair shop. Called the Ford dealership and they told me to replace it would run around $3300. For comparison I called some transmission shops and got ahold of County Transmissions and spoke with Hampton. He told me that it would run $2300 including labor if it needed to be replaced. They had good reviews so I decided to take it to them and save the $1000. Took it there on a Monday and Hampton told me they would have it done in several days. By Friday had not heard from anyone so I called them and was told that it was next in line to be looked at which would be the following Monday. My vehicle had been there five days and had not been looked at. On the following Monday, Hampton called me and said that it did need to be replaced and to replace it would run $3200. This was $1000 more than $2300 as he had initially told me and about the same as what the dealership would charge. Mentioned this to him and he said that the $2300 was for a used PTU that they would get from a salvaged vehicle, and a new one was $3200. He had not told me this when I first called and I had of course assumed the initial quote of $2300 was for a new one. Didn't even know they would consider putting a used one a vehicle because how would you know it didn't have issues. In light of this new information and for the fact I feel it was a bait-and-switch, I decided to take my vehicle to the Ford dealership and have them do the repair. The dealership's warranty on the PTU was much better and I know am getting a genuine Ford part. With an independent shop am probably getting a cheap aftermarket part. If I moved to another city or say was traveling and had an issue with it, I could take my vehicle to any Ford dealership and they would honor the warranty. If County Transmissions had done the work, then I was out of luck. Had to take an Uber back to County Transmissions and pick-up my vehicle and then take it to the Ford dealership. This costs another $50 on top of the $50 Uber charge had already incurred when I took my vehicle there and had to take an Uber to get back home as I live far from them. I opened up my SmartTag GPS tracking app as had placed an Android SmartTag GPS tracking device inside the vehicle awhile back. Was very surprised to see my vehicle had been driven around Vienna and appeared they were using it to run errands as it was stopping at various locations. So in the end I was out $100 in Uber fees, they had my vehicle for a week and nothing was done after Hampton telling me they would get to it in several days, plus they apparently used it to run errands. I would certainly not recommend this company in light of everything that happened. Note: Saw that Hampton had posted a rebuttal on my initial review where he states that the initial quote was an estimate to repair the PTU, but this is not true. The PTU is something that is replaced, not repaired, and he gave me a quote of $2300 to REPLACE the PTU. Plus they didn't need to be driving it around to determine where the leak was coming from since it was obviously leaking when I took it in and it had to be replaced. When I called him on Friday he said they hadn't looked at it yet; however they had been driving it around before that Friday. He mentions that they have a shuttle service and I asked about this but was told it didn't go to where I live. read more

Just bought a new'ish truck and it was having some transmission shuddering. Dealer wanted me to do a new transfer case, all fluids changes, etc and more. Would have cost a fortune. Cars are obviously complex (they seem to only get more complex w time), but everyone at County was exceptional from the first conversation to the pickup. Saved me easily 90% cost over going to the dealer and no critical components were needed, just the basics first (filter change, additive included in the new transmission fluid) and truck is flawless now. Recently i purchased a 2010 Ford F150 from my niece in Alexandria Virginia. When i arrived from North Dakota i learned that there was an issue with the transmission. After two unsuccessful attempts at two other shops, one charged me $158.00 and told me nothing was wrong which was not the case. The second business charged me $338.00 for adding a quart of oil,then they gave me an estimate of $1600.00. After reading the reviews on Yelp and speaking to them i made the right decision and had Bill and Sean at County Transmission inspect it and repair it, by replacing the oil, filter and gasket. They did exactly what they said they were going to do and more. They did the work in a timely manner and for the Virgina market at a competitive price. Yes they are high quality 5 star transmission job shop. Trust is important. I trusted these men and they delivered. My F150 transmission works. They also added a special lube to the rear end gear box, no charge. If you have a vehicle with a transmission issue, I would have a conversation with them. A+mazing! I contacted County Transmissions after a dealership, during a recent service, noted that my transmission pan was leaking and I was quoted a significant amount for the repair. I was also told not to drive the car last long distances, as it was on the verge of failure. If you're having chest pains, you see a cardiologist, not a generalist, so I opted to have it repaired by County Transmissions after reading all the positive reviews here on Yelp. Thank goodness I did! The folks here are super friendly and responsive. They squeezed us in and thought they might be able to do the repair while my wife was there. After a few minutes of having the car on the lift, the (transmission) doctor came out and delivered the news we all feared: THE DEALERSHIP WAS LYING! THERE WAS NO LEAK! We were obviously in shock and utter disbelief. Went in for what I thought was a transmission problem. They test drove my truck and told me the engine codes were for something else which led me to the solution a short time after. I asked if they wanted any diagnostic fee which I would have gladly paid, but they said no I'm good to go. Then they thanked me for coming in as I was leaving. I should be thanking them as they helped me find a solution, charging me nothing for the 30 minutes I was there. I called Alex, the owner of the repair shop based on a strong recommendation by the manager at NTB. My 2007 Lexus ES 350 failed state inspection because the flex pipe needed replacing. Alex picked up the phone and gave a price that was very competitive. He told me to come over and within 10 minutes of my arriving, he started on my car. As I watched, he showed me why the car had failed inspection and in about 30 minutes he had cut out the bad part and welded on the new one to the existing exhaust system. The best part was that I watched everything from a safe distance because sparks were flowing as he cut and welded on the new flex pipe. Top class service from an expert! T. Brought in my Dodge Ram 2500 as I experienced heavy shaking in low to mid rpm that was never there more last week (Aug 2020) than anytime before. Harrison the owner always has your back as he takes care of me and ALL his clients very personably as his staff that works on my truck. It's not pretty as a work truck but after a transmission rebuild in 2018, County Transmission has always had the most genuine customer service and follow up process bar none. They diagnosed my issue as two worn out Universal Joints on the main drive shaft and know a serious accident and heavy damage to the truck was truly averted if that beast dropped while towing on the highway or a back road! Hampton with "hair tail attaché" was nice at first then became rude and seemed racist. Not only that he was also looking for a fight like we are inside an MMA ring. Feel sorry for people like this because one day things will end up a negative manner for them. Other workers there said he had a bad day which is not true and not an excuse at all. He is just a grumpy old bad business person. Bill on the other hand who seemed to be the road tester/mechanic was nice and cool. The price was too high to do a simple torque for an axel. Wait time was 3 hours. I decided to let them do the repairs so I can just get out of their place and stay away from them as far as I can. They will never see me or my family or my many co workers of my friend (who all have cars" Would never recommend this business to anyone. And would warn people about them as long as I can, Will never go back that's for sure. Should have stayed with our regular shop/mechanics in MD. I had my local shop replace a CV axel on my 2008 Honda Civic. Later that week the car developed a transmission leak. My local shop recommended County Transmissions as they do not work on transmissions themselves. I dropped it off and received a call later that same day saying that it was fixed and their wouldn't be a charge. The CV axel hadn't been properly seated by my local shop, so it was a real quick fix. I had some transmission fluid in the car so County Transmissions used it to top off the car and recommended that I swap the fluid out soon. I would have been happy to have paid for the time they spent diagnosing the problem and the quick repair, but was really impressed with how they took care of it! While I don't hope any of my transmissions go out on any of my vehicles, if they do I know where I'll be taking my car. read more

I was told by my car dealer that the transmission in my 2010 Malibu was going to need replacing in the next few months, so I came to County Transmissions for a more expert opinion. As a single woman, I'm sometimes leery of trusting car repair shops, but these guys were great. They were able to take a thorough look at the transmission in about an hour and even brought me back to show me that everything looked fine and that the dealer had been mistaken. Update: Just spoke with Hampton today about the possible options to get a rebuilt transmission for my 2005 Jeep Wrangler. He gave me two options, BOTH of which were cheaper than going to Quadratec (huge Jeep parts dealer). The quote he gave me was about $500 LESS than I was intending to spend. My hybrid was having a transmission issue. I don't feel safe driving it to the shop, so I called them instead. Mike picked up the phone and I described to him the issue and asked if he can provide me a quote. I know it's hard to get an estimate without seeing the car. Mike pretty much gave me a worst case scenario estimate. After a bit of wait, he emailed me the information. The estimate was so detailed. After talking to the family, we agreed on bringing the car in for service. After drop off, they were nice to give me a ride to work. The work was a full transmission replacement. I dropped off the car on Friday and it was ready by Tuesday, so quick. People there are so informative and will tell you straight up, no hidden fee or anything. Beware! I saw all of the positive ratings and thought I would bring my 2005 Explorer in as that the transmission had slipped several times while driving it. I dropped off the vehicle and they told me that they had driven it seventeen miles and that they couldn't find anything wrong with it. They said they would drop the transmission pan for $134.00 and check it from there. I said okay. They dropped the pan and said the transmission looked to be in great shape. I came and picked up the vehicle. It was driven about a thousand miles and has been garaged because it began slipping again. When taken to a different transmission shop they said that the transmission lines were rusted and that all of the fluid kept leaking out and that is why it was slipping. The lines were rusted when I took it to County Transmission but they didn't want to simply replace the transmission lines. Instead they refilled the transmission with fluid and told me that nothing was wrong with it and said that the $134 could be applied to any future service on this vehicle. Yeah future service I would need when the transmission got tore out of the vehicle because all of the fluid leaked out again! read more

County Transmission is the only shop that I will go to when I have transmission problems. Another shop had replaced the transmission in my Acura TL, but I was still having problems with the transmission, and they would not take any further actions. I brought my TL to Hampton, who did a thorough inspection, and showed me why I was still having problems - the other shop only did a "partial" replacement. Hampton was able to complete the job in only 3 days, and my TL was running as good as new. I was also able to obtain a 3 year warranty on the transmission, which closed the deal when I was ready to sell the TL. Last month, when my Cadillac Deville started shifting rough, I brought it to Hampton, and within one day he diagnosed the problem, repaired the problem, and my Caddy is running smooth again! I have used County Transmissions for three different vehicles, and they have always done good work. I brought my 2012 Audi A4 that the dealer said could not be repaired except by replacing the transmission ($7k). When Michael passed me the bill, I stared in disbelief at the $0, assuming that the total must be on another page. Michael told me that one transmission mounting bolt was loose, and other three missing, which he addressed for free. He actually ran a code check and told me the diagnosis was a misfire in the engine, not the transmission, which explains another issue that I had experienced. When you have a transmission issue, take your car no where else but County Transmission! read more

County Transmissions was very easy to schedule with. I requested a transmission drain and fill and requested to use my own ATF and filter. Went to the dealership for the ATF and filter and was told by parts the filter was just a screen and there was no reason to change it. Dropped off my car before 8 and it was ready by 3. They changed the filter since it did have a serviceable filter. The dealership wanted $97 for the same filter and was charged about $20 at County Transmissions. Pricing was fair and I will definitely trust them with all my transmissions needs. Everywhere else wanted to flush the fluid which is the last thing I wanted. County Transmission rebuilt my 1990 Volvo 240 automatic transmission in November 2019. They did an excellent job at a reasonable price. Recently, the trans was shifting erratically into and out of fourth gear. The other gears shifted normally from a stop, but forth was locked out. Yesterday I got a call that the Volvo was fixed. Went to pick it up, and was told by Michael that a wire was burned bare, and the lockout solenoid was the problem, which Michael replaced. Asked the price and was told no charge! Seriously, who else does that these days? They could have given me a song and dance, and charged anything and I would have been none the wiser. Talk about honesty and integrity, it's name is County Transmission! read more
