Delicious...words can't describe my meal from start to finish...I ordered the King Louis, with a few modifications, everything on it, with pasta salad in the side. The gentleman who took my order was such a sweetheart, by the way. I ordered it to go and went to go and pick it up. They'd just finished my order, which was excellent, seeing as how I was on my lunch break. The woman at the counter asked me if I wanted a sample of the almond cake....of course! It was sheer heaven...gracious...I want some even now..I quickly bought a piece and sped back to work to enjoy my new favorite restaurant's delicacies....bliss is the only word to describe everything. The sandwich was perfect, the pasta salad was good....and I'm seriously wanting to know if they are open tomorrow...I ended up giving the cake to a co-worker to brighten her day. It worked...lol. When I lived in Augusta, I would go hear almost on a weekly basis. Now, every time I go to visit Augusta, I try to stop here for a sandwich. Nice, friendly staff, good customer service. The best pastrami sandwich hands down I've ever had! I would come back here again and again. This eatery was off the beaten path. If it wasn't for my coworkers searching I would have definitely would have missed it. My expectations going in wasn't high but that quickly changed. The decor and overall layout of the venue was a bit obscure however what it lacked in ambience, the eatery made up in taste. I want it again right now. Such an awesome deli! I was in Augusta for the day and it seemed like Hildebrandt's reigns supreme as far as lunch options go. I walked in and ordered a pastrami ruben, since well it seemed like the thing to do! The woman manning the counter who was also the owner was super friendly. I explained how it was my first time and she helped show me the ropes a bit as far as where the drinks were and waiting on your order. I went with the german potato salad as my side, again because it seemed like the thing to do! Both items did not disappoint, it was a super satisfying, delicious, and affordable lunch. There is a ton of cool history to the place and the owner was explaining to me how the front part use to be a market her grandfather ran. When that model started to change they began focusing mostly on the deli. Really neat and delicious family run shop, they can tell they really care that you have a great experience there! read more

This place is Augusta history. I drove by this place every day on my way to work and I never really knew what they are about. They have some antiques inside and some convenience store items but make no mistake you will be wanting to come here for some food. I tried their sandwiches, deserts, chili, german potato salad and pimento cheese. The deserts were great, the pimento cheese and sandwiches are solid and the chili and german potato salad are flat out awesome. I ordered the ruben with corn beef and a side of german potato and that will run you around 8.50. I feel the portion is right for the money paid and with the way that it is wrapped its perfect for carrying for lunch, which I cant wait to have for my lunch today. While you are there I strongly suggest you speak with the family, if they have time, to take in the stories of when and how Hildebrandt's came to be and what exactly certain things really mean, like the bike in the window. Again this is one of the few places that is a true Augusta establishment. read more

Fine, if you want more info: It's a store that's been around since 1879. 1879!!! I have this ingrained dislike for chain restaurants, and an intense love for family run businesses. But not just any family run business...one that's run with passion and run right. This place is one of them. The same family has been running it forever. They are among the most friendly people I have ever had the pleasure of interacting with. I felt a bit like I was in my aunt's kitchen eating lunch. You order when you walk in, the front part is a bit like a antique store/corner grocery store, and then you find a place to sit. There are tables and counters in the front as well as the back. I sat myself down at a table after picking up a bag of chips and a soda from the front, and a few minutes later my sandwich was delivered to me. More on that later. The entirety of the inside is covered with pictures, maps, newspaper clippings, etc, and it feels like I am walking back in time. Luann is amazing, and I have the feeling if I go back there in six months she'll have remembered my name. So in terms of ambiance....this place is just fantastic. Food? Well, I haven't had a sandwich this good since the last time I ate at a "real deli" in NY/NJ. The food was delicious, hands down. They have a spicy mustard that is made by someone and packaged. Hildebrandt's sells the bottles, you should pick one up when you pay for your sandwich. I could go on but I don't think I need to. There were a few people here, but the fact that this place wasn't crowded to the gills astounds me. It is, in a word, amazing. One of my favorite places in Augusta. I'm so glad I finally got to try this! This might be one of those places that I will bring people to when they come visit. When you walk in, it feels like you are stepping back in time. I tried the Yachtwurst sandwich and it literally hit the spot. Anything with pistachios is guaranteed to catch my attention. I asked the lady who was ringing us up how people preferred that sandwich and she had me walk in the back with her and ask Louanne (know I butchered the spelling) because she would know better. I added muenster cheese and spicy mustard and it was so good! My parents split a Reuben and said it was delicious and how they should be served, instead of the messy ones that you see so often. I tried the cucumber dill salad and it was really tasty. Next time I'll try the German potato salad. I also love that you pay at the end of your meal, you hardly ever see that anymore. I may or may not have left with a sweatshirt from there, as well. This will not be my last trip!! read more

So I was here for a fabulous Yelp event brought together by the equally fabulous Natasha C!!! I know this is crazy but I live three blocks from this place and never set foot in it before until now. I'm kicking myself now because I feel I could have been enjoying their great food a long time ago! This business started out as a general store and they also delivered. Soon after they started preparing food and added a cafe, which was a great idea. It's amazing to know that this place has been in existence for over 100 years and still is ran my the same family!!! You just don't see things like that anymore. The family that runs this place are very friendly and inviting. I was able to have a conversation with Rick, one of the family members, and he was sharing family stories and being very candid. I thought that was very charming. I was able to sample a few items on the menu and they were out of this world. I tried the Reuben sandwich, the King Louis sandwich, the German potato salad, and the chili. All of these items were pretty good, some of them I wouldn't have tried if they weren't offered to me and I really liked them. I will definitely be ordering these items when I come back. The items on the menu are really reasonable too. I also tried some desserts that were made by Mrs. Joyce(Rick's mom), and they were totally delicious!!! I don't think they are on the menu but she does make them for special occasions. This is a great place to grab lunch and admire all the history inside of this place. You will definitely get a history lesson while dining here and great hospitality as well. I hope this place is around for another 100 years!!! read more

This was a road trip stop - that we will be talking about for years to come! Maybe the best ruben sandwich I've ever had. Warm potato salad and a delicious pickle finished off the plate. This was the most flavorful delicious sandwich plate I've had in a while. I did the pastrami ruben and the meat was delicious, kraut was delicious, it was heaven. I'd be in there all the time if I lived nearby. Nice folks and a nice little restaurant downtown. Highly recommend combining it with a walk through the museum next door ($4 admission!!!). read more

Great food and unique store. You place at the order at the counter and the lady working the front counter was an older southern lady and really funny and nice and helpful with suggestions. My friend and I each had the king Louie with german potato salad. Prices are very reasonable and the portions are just the right size. They had a lot of cool retro stuff for sale too like an old coke machine. Good location, we had no problem finding parking and walked to the riverwalk after. SLOW! SLOW! SLOW! I stopped in on Saturday around 1:30pm. A couple was ordering just before us and a table of 4 had already ordered and was waiting for food when we arrived. Sign mentioned no grilled items were available so I am guessing something was broken in the kitchen. Ordered Reuben with cucumber dill salad(skin on) and a egg salad sandwich with German potato salad. Then sat down with our bottled drinks out of the cooler (no fountain drinks here) and check-in on Yelp and waited 40 minutes for our food to come out. The egg salad sandwich was excellent, the Reuben was just ok, and the 2 side salads were good. I didn't ask or complain about why the food was taking so long and was disappointed the staff didn't check in with us during the wait. The people the came in before us and after us received their food in the order in was placed so that wasn't an issue, just seemed like a long wait for sandwiches. Fantastic little sandwich shop. The Hot King Louis is definitely worth checking out...it's one of the best bites in Augusta! The building is from another time, service is fast/friendly and most importantly, the food is great!
