A recent request for a service call on October 2023, I followed with text and photos what needs to be done was met with NO RESPONSE. I should have learn my lesson from July 2022 when I also called Hicks Plumbing, and my call was not returned. At this point, I gave up and hired another plumber. Norm was freaking awesome. After my Dad died, my mom started paying the bills. She was getting these $800/month water bills, that I was trying to diagnose over the phone (but she wouldn't actually send me the bill). Eventually I called the water company, they explained I have a leak, 86,400 seconds/day * 30 days, yes she could use that much water. My Mom had had numerous plumbers over the house to help fix her leak. They would come out, charge her all kinds of money, do nothing. Finally, I started calling Handymen, and my Mom's gardener told me it was the water main that was the problem. My Mom had gotten some crappy giant plumbing company to come by, they had bid $5,000 to replace the manifold, $22,000 to replace the line. I think the plan was to replace the manifold, then break the main line (flexible pipe from 1963, now super brittle, not to code). So it was going to end up being $27,000, and she would be without water for 2 days why they ran the main line... Me and my Mom's gardner/kind of adopted son insisted she get an estimate from Norm. Norm came out, bid $11,000 of which $6,000 of that was the materials because copper pipe is really expensive. So Norm and his son came out, ran the new main line. Gardener sends me pictures, looks beautiful. Water meter still shows leaking, Norm tracks that down to a toilet, fixes that as part of the job. Of course, my mom was then upset because she could still hear water running. Well, come to discover she has tinnitus. She's 87, a little paranoid. Since she could still hear the water running, she was mad, didn't want to pay him. So I paid him over the phone from Oregon. Norm was a prince with all that, no hard feelings, he got it. Wasn't mad, just wanted to get paid. There was a minor problem with one of the fixtures, Norm ordered a new one, put it in no charge. The way the construction trades work I've noticed is that about 1/10 tradesmen really know their stuff. We no longer have vocational training, so its really an apprenticeship program to learn a trade. It's important to get a referral, because the good people network with each other, and all become friends. So that was a long bit about my personal situation, let me summarize. He fixed my shut-off valve for my washer, and did a great job. His invoice was clear on prizing for parts ($45), and labor ($145). I had 2 other quotes from 2 other plumbers for this same job. 1st quote was $1,050 (parts & installation) + $100 (for picking up the valve at the store). Where to begin really? I'm a Pasadena native and have had mixed results with plumbing over the years. It could be that I'm jinxed, or it could be that in general, there are a lot of people that claim they know what they're doing, but actually just slapped a decal on the side of their rented car and show up looking to cause leaks. I have called Darrow twice (once last year, and also a few days ago) to fix my clogged toilets and sinks! Hicks Plumbing saved us hundreds of dollars. We had an issue with the gas plumbing in our fireplace. We had discussed the matter with over a dozen other plumbers. Many said they wouldn't be able to help us. Others said they'd be happy to have a look for $xyz per hour, but refused to discuss the problem over the phone or look at any pictures (via text or email) in advance of the service call. I had little confidence that those plumbers would show up prepared for the job, and I have little doubt that they would have charged me for the time it would have taken them to go get the necessary parts; that is, assuming they even agreed to help - after charging me the inspection fee. One such plumber did come out, and he told us we'd have to spend over a $1000 to re-plumb our fireplace. Then I came across Hicks Plumbing on Yelp. Darrow was helpful and professional from the start. Darrow Hicks came out to repair the water line to my refrigerator, and inspect/evaluate the plumbing in our recently purchased house in Altadena. he fixed the water line and then made a thorough inspection, providing us with a detailed write up of his observations and recommendations. About a week later I called to have him reconfigure a gas line so our dryer could be installed. He took a look and concluded that we could make the proper and safe connection just by using a flex hose that was 12" longer. He then showed me how easy it would be to install myself, and did not even charge me for the service call! Hicks Plumbing is the best. I live in Pasadena and had a faulty pressure regulator, it was making a horrible noise. I called Arroyo Plumbing, they came out for a look. They charged me $75 to take a "look", the guy glances at the regulator and said it would be about $750 to replace. "Can you replace the washers and things in it?" I ask, "no it does not work that way" is the reply. So, I snap a picture and email to two more plumbers, this does not sound right to me. I talk to Hicks Plumbing, they are very busy but can come in two days, he sounded nice and responsible. Ok, I will wait. He tells me on the phone, it will be about $100 to $150 for labor to replace, quick job. Plus the cost of a new regulator, if the old one cannot be fixed. Fixed? Arroyo Plumbing told me that is not how it works...ummm. Hicks comes over, says for about $100 he can replace the gaskets and washers and it usually works, but it is a risk. So, $750 from Arroyo Plumbing or $175 with labor from Hicks to rebuild. I say, let's take the chance and he rebuilds it in a half-hour and on his way. It works fine, and Hicks was absolutely great. I will never go anyplace else. Arroyo Plumbing should be ashamed of themselves. read more

I called Hicks Plumbing because of the great reviews on Yelp. I own a house where some of my relatives live, and I called Hicks to ask them to come out and look at a problem that was reported. I called on a Wednesday and asked them to call my family to set up the actual appointment. By Friday, no one had called, so my sister called them. They were to show up at 8:00 Monday morning. At 8:30 they called to say the wouldn't be there until 1:30. When they showed up, they decided that the floor was uneven (new flooring!) and they wouldn't do the work. read more

Ok, this is kind of bizarre, but after I paid the invoice IN FULL for all services he provided, I requested him to itemize out the bill to isolate the dishwasher install from the faucet install, as my flooring company was going to reimburse me for the dishwasher install (long story). In order to get reimbursed, they requested a separate invoice JUST for the DW install. So Darrow made a separate DUPLICATE invoice after-the-fact (again, paid in full). Well his invoicing system must remind him of "unpaid" invoices because months later he randomly hits me up to pay this extra invoice even though we paid in full for the job. Several years later and he is still trying to invoice me. He apparently is confused and even when I explain it he argues. Over it. read more

I had a clog in my toilet that I was unable to fix. Hicks plumbing sent someone over to inspect it and quickly realized that it was an issue that my landlord would be required to fix rather than an outside contractor and didn't charge me since he was only there a couple of minutes. I called Hicks when my toilet was overflooring and Darrow came out 45 minutes later. He was prompt, professional and diagnosed the issue immediately. He moved things out of my garage to get to a valve or something he needed to access and put things back before leaving. He fixed a problem with an unrelated toilet (it had been making that annoying running sound for over 7 years!) and it took only a few minutes. He also had great advice on other service people would could help with a larger sewer problem for my HOA. It seems that the problem that manifested itself inside my house was because of a sewer system problem which belongs to our HOA. He even checked the system on a neighbor's property to make sure he knew the scope of the issue. He cleared the blockage for my system and charged me a reasonable rate for that. I would HIGHLY recommend this company and Darrow. My home was as spotless as it was when he started. He went above and beyond what anyone else would have done. And, I loved that he thoroughly explained everything. Darrow is awesome! Call Hicks before you fall prey to any of the larger companies, like Roto Rooter or whatever they are called. I had a stopped drain (the kitchen and laundry line). A previous plumber couldn't get it clear and thought it might be a bigger problem. Since I was out of their area, they recommended I call someone else closer to me to follow up. I called Hicks. They arrived at the time they had approximated and they were able to get the drain clear. Hicks was certainly more expensive, $125 (vs the other place was $45, although they didn't charge me); however in my past experience, this price is totally in line with the cost I expected. This is Vlee. Last month my drain was clogged (big time). I called Darrow of Hicks Plumbing to come. I don't know where the main drain-out in the front garden is, 1) I requested him to put a CAMERA through the drain to check out the drain pipes all the way to the street. We looked through the pipes and found no roots growing into it, though the pipes are cast iron old pipes. 2) He next cleared the clogs from numerous sink holes in the house. Finally I found a main DRAIN-OUT hole inside the house and he cleared the big clog in the main line from there. 3) He used an ultra-sound machine to identity where the drain pipes in the front garden are.So this last month I digged through the soil in the front garden, and found the drain pipes two feet below the soil. Next time if there's a clog, the clog can be cleared from a NEW drain-out in the front garden. Thank you! read more
