OK, it's Sunday morning just finished breakfast. We decide let's go far then travel back. So we program the GPS and off we go. Whoa, where the hell is this place. Yep, in the middle of never neverland, cell phone coverage, nope. So it's early, we're one of 2 sets of people here. Yeah us, personalize attention. We grab some wine and go off to venture through the gallery, impressive. Comeback, talking to the staff and in walks the winemaker, always a treat for me. So, we are now here an hour having an incredible time. We damn near tasted everything on the list, thank goodness we ate. Grounds were nice, peaceful. As we left the sun was breaking through, wow, gorgeous day. You won't be disappointed. I will give my disclaimer now, while in the past I wasn't really impressed with the Red and Green labeled bottles at stores and restaurants. Having now had an opportunity to experience their collection, I highly recommend these wines. read more

We (a group of 9) spontaneously decided to do a Napa trip on a last minute notice so I tried to find places that would allow a large group without a reservation. Tip: if you type in Hess Collection Winery on google map, it's going to direct you to an old spot/incorrect location. Just keep an eye out for the sign! Or you will pass it like we did (both cars). Hess was one of the wineries that came up on my list, but when we arrived, it did look like we needed reservations. However, we were lucky and they had space for us in their outdoor patio/courtyard area. We were told that the B1G1 tasting is limited to one per table, so we decided to get bottles instead ($20 extra corkage fee) since it also came with a snack plate. Everyone enjoyed the wine and service. I personally didn't care for the snack plate, but everyone at the table absolutely LOVED the shortbread that was included. Unfortunately, we didn't get to visit the indoor tasting room/art room/etc since we arrived late. We'll definitely make another trip back though. read more

If you are coming here looking for wine, you're really in the wrong place: the Hess Collection is art first, wine second. That said, the art gallery is worth a trip here in itself: the electronic, semi-interactive art and the photorealistic paintings/woodcuts are very, very beautiful. If you're an art historian, classically trained artist or just a wannabe art-snob, you'll find the collection here very rewarding. The wines are also good. I didn't buy any of their wines, and I think I kind of screwed up on my choices as I'm really not a big fan of Cabernet Sauvignon (probably should've gone for something like petit sirah.) The Chardonnay was great, though. Although my friend and I were uber-cheap and just split the $10 tasting, I am certainly considering joining their wine club. Wine clubs. This winery was very elegant and classy, but sadly our experience didn't match the ambiance. We selected the winery via Yelp search based on the uniqueness - a few miles off the beaten path, and featuring a beautiful multi-story art gallery (which is free to walk through and definitely didn't disappoint!) The walls were filled with interesting, abstract art pieces and displays and it was fun to look through it before we headed out. Unfortunately, the 3-star rating primarily comes from our wine tasting itself. To give you a quick gist, $10 invites you to try four of their wines, or if you check in on Yelp like we did, you can get a 2 for 1 tasting coupon! Our host was friendly and engaged in lots of conversation with us, but his attitude occasionally came off condescending and uppity. I'll spare you the details, but it did dampen the experience for me. Being a newbie to the world of wine, I had hoped the tasting would feel more casual and laid back. Good stop- We headed up into the hills of Mt. Veeder to taste the wines at Hess. This was an informal tour of the art museum with the wines at the tasting bar. The art makes this a worthwhile visit- very interesting contemporary paintings, sculptures, and photography. The vineyards are tucked in and blocked off behind the winery- hard to get to the views that you think you might get given the elevation. Heading into the tasting bar, there's a pretty cool look-see into the barrel aging cellar. The Wines- -2008 Small Block Sauvignon Blanc, Lake County- Musqué clone, Short cooperage in neutral French oak. Straw, mineral, stone fruit, green apple, pear-nice and crisp---good---$19. -2007 Chardonnay, Mt. Veeder- 18 months in 50% new French oak, no malo. Really strong toasty notes with wet stone and tropical fruit---good---$35. -2009 Small Block Zinfandel, Dry Creek Valley- 99% Zinfandel, 1% Petite Sirah; 12 months in French Oak (2-3 years old). Black fruit and spice-brambly. Light bodied with black raspberry notes---good---$36. -2009 Small Block Syrah Rosé, Napa Valley- Fermented in neutral oak. This winery is a bit off the beaten path in napa, but definitely worth checking out, especially with the buy one get one free yelp check in deal (2 for $10)!! Note that wifi in that area is non-existent, so I had trouble connecting to my yelp app, but you can get the deal even if you mention it. They do not allow dogs inside the winery, but they are more than welcome in the garden outside. The art museum was also really fun to explore. Some very interesting pieces. The employees are very friendly and helpful with their wine recommendations during the tasting. This would be a great place to start or end a day in wine country :) read more

we decided to squeeze in a wine tasting in the morning. hess was open the morning before thanksgiving and part of the lexus free tasting. the drive was reminiscent of where i lived in santa cruz, narrow and windy. the place was pretty empty, the lady who poured our wine was very nice, informative, and attentive. i actually really like the wine here, i like wines that don't leave an after taste and their wines were perfect for that. we bought 4 bottles to bring home. we didn't have time to enjoy the museum but we will be back! read more

First winery/wine tour I've ever had was given by the Hess Winery. I liked their facilities as it was very rustic and retro but still retained a modern twinge to it. There's a nice little courtyard before you go inside with a pond of fishes. They gave a free glass of wine for you to have with you and taste as you enjoyed their free tour of the winery. There's also two stories of art collections that is open to the public for anyone to enjoy. I'm not an artsy person, but I still enjoyed some of the work of arts there! For $10 you can taste 4 different types of wine. The people that work there are super nice and friendly. I enjoyed my first wine tour here. I would definitely come back! read more

Absolutely loved this winery! The vine-covered exterior old stone is beautiful and the immaculate and spacious white museum inside has many cool art pieces, like the typewriter on fire! My friends and I had a wine tasting and our server kindly chatted with us and ended up giving us each a 5th tasting each for free! He also gave us a tour of the vineyards, the cellar, the fermentation room, and was very knowledgable about the history and wines from Napa and around the world. Came here based off of several recommendations we received from friends that this place is so worth it. And it was! We came for a tasting around 4pm. We started off in the tasting room and ordered a flight for the two of us (gives you the opportunity to taste 4 wines for $20). We tried 2 reds, and 2 whites - all were excellent, and we were able to ask our server some questions about the vineyard and the flavors we were tasting. He also did a great job of recommending some wines to us based off of how we described our wine preferences. Yum! We then went upstairs to take a look at the art collection. It was overall stunning! A wonderful amount of thought-provoking pieces that my friend and I had a great time analyzing and interpreting. There isn't a TON to see, but it was fun to walk through each of the floors and embrace the art after some wine tasting. Wish there was a LITTLE more integration between the art and wine, but still an awesome and one-of-a-kind experience. Was also not too packed when we went, which we loved! read more

Very nice winery. A little off the beaten path but worth it once you visit. Nice scenery and landscape, and a neat set-up they have. Not only is it a winery, but they have an interesting art collection as well just in case you don't want to spend your entire time kicking back liquid grapes. Haven't been to a ton of different wineries before but I have to say this one was different from the others I've been to and I would recommend people to visit. I'd definitely come back. Wow, simply an unforgettable experience! This is not a typical winery, but more of a beautifully landscaped and architecturally lovely winery, eatery and art gallery in one. My travel partners and I thoroughly enjoyed the wine and bites pairings and the relaxing stroll through the impressive art collection of the Donald Hess. Six of us arrived in the morning on a Sunday on recommendation of some in my grouop. Ambiance - (5/5) The winery is a bit out of town, but I was glad we made the trip. We were just in time for a free tour of the vineyard, storeroom, bottling room, and art gallery. There was also a rather good movie showing the location of all the Hess vineyards. It was not very busy and the tasting room was large, though with no snacks. There are no dogs allowed inside. Service - (3/5) Our pourer was polite and prompt, though not overly friendly and poured very, very little. Cost - (4/5) One tasting was $10 for four pours, with a two-for-one coupon available Wines - (3/5) The wines were nice, and some were delicious, though not always a great value for the price. Let me preface this review by saying I have been to Hess twice. The first time was an A+ and thus I purchased a couple nice bottles. Because of that first time there I had been wanting to bring my friends there for a similar experience, however this was not the case. I was very disappointed overall as my greeting and mismanagement of my party. It was embarrassing, unorganized, and worst of all stuffy. As we approached the front desk to check-in ten minutes early, I was greeted with "I assume you don't have a reservation?" After I confirmed I actually did have a reservation for six, the girl went to the back to check for space. When she came back all I got was a curt smile but no update. We were then made to wait over 20 minutes past our original reservation time while watching other parties with times after ours escorted in. It was only after I finally was annoyed enough to say something that another person took us into the tasting room. The space provided was tight and uncomfortable and as such made zero purchases that day. In total, I am marking them an OK mainly based on my prior time. If this had been my first time such as my friends, I would have walked out and never returned. Hopefully this gets to the proper folks for a little refresher to the front desk people that the first impression is the most important impression. read more

Really enjoyed our tasting experience here. We arrived at 10 am with an appt. Friendly greeting. We were the only ones there as it was raining so had very good service. The tasting room is very nice love the building and the art gallery is a nice bonus. We liked every wine we tried and we tried a lot. Some wineries make you stick to the 4-5 tastings on the menu but our server was smart enough to realize she could sell us more wine if she allowed us to taste more wines. We spent a solid hour tasting many different wines and revisiting and ended up joining the club and leaving with a case of wine. The wines are not as high end as some of the other wines in Napa but they are solid and the price is very affordable and a much better value than most other places. read more

For a while, my friends and I thought we were lost, trying to find this winery. It felt like it was in the middle of nowhere, having driven through a neighborhood and then up a winding road for at least 15 minutes. Finally, when we thought we were genuinely screwed, we arrived at Hess. The main yard is quite pretty, with trellises, a large lawn and a pond with coi and water lilies. Our group was given a tasting outside, and to be honest, by then I was so tired, I didn't really pay much attention to the wines. When we were finished, we all congregated in the main building and were offered a tour of the museum. Apparently the guy, Donald Hess (or Ronald?), is quite the collector. He had an extensive amount of very interesting pieces, including a collection of rocks that had been melted but then ended up looking like giant brown meringues, and a Argentinian typewriter that has an eternal flame (not really too eternal since they turn it off at night). Some very interesting pieces across 2 floors, definitely check it out if you get the chance. One thing to note, I have AT&T and got no reception whatsoever on the way up and for 99% of the time we spent at the winery. Just a minor annoyance, but might serve problematic if you are expecting an important call or email. read more

25 dollars gets you four samples. Be careful, some of the bartenders give out significantly larger pours than others, and we got unlucky to have someone on the VERY stingy size. The other side of the table also had bites to eat we were not offered. Our server himself was a bit off in other ways too. He didn't give us a new glass between red and whites. Worse though was that he kept winking at me repeatedly despite the fact that I was there with my boyfriend and his parents. The red wines were actually very good, but our server made us feel a bit ripped off. Be sure to read the deals carefully to understand them - buying three bottles only comped a single of our parties tastings. Not to miss, however, is the art gallery upstairs, which is actually free to the public and made the whole experience worthwhile. I'd recommend going to check it out, but maybe skip the wine tasting. read more

Hess 2002 Cab Sau- The aroma is concentrated and starts out with ripe fruit expressions of cassis and black cherry. Classic varietal characters of earth, cedar, and spice bring complexity. In the mouth, the wine reveals additional flavors of blackberry and dark chocolate richly framed with ripe mountain tannins. We spent hours here a few weeks ago with some friends. The art gallery is incredible! I have never seen anything like it! The best part is that you can view all this amazing art for free. After our self guided tour of the art gallery we headed downstairs for some wine tasting. Our host Larry was one of the coolest guys ever! We ended up buying a case of zin and Carignan (6 bottles of each). I was surprised by how tasty the wines were! After our wine tasting we checked out the huge fish pond and just enjoyed the beautiful scenery. This winery is not on the main roads and you definitely have to map this one. The wine is good, but go for the art. As others have noted, the drive can be a little disconcerting (especially with several people in the car asking things like, "are you sure we turned at the right place?" and "do you think we missed it?" AND "Is this it? I think this is it!" [cue squealing tires]), but I digress. And actually, it really isn't that far out. I think a lot of the confusion arises in the places where the road passes by a few "Winter's Bone" style trailer homes. The wines are generally solid, but having been here a number of times, I have yet to fall in love with any of them. However, I always enjoy the museum, and would make the trip here occasionally for that alone. The collection is eclectic, at turns thought-provoking, poignant, and at times even whimsical. Maybe whimsical is not quite right, but while some of the art conveys a clear message, a few pieces seem designed just to provoke a smile. I have taken a number of people here with me over the years and everyone seems to have enjoyed it. Definitely worth a few hours of your time while in Napa. read more

That's a pretty awesome idea combining art and wine. However, I didn't really love any of the wines, but the cake and the oil in the gift room were delicious. Plus the chardonnay candle smelled AWESOME. I loved the space were the art pieces were shown and some of the art pieces were really good. I will say that the drive here is lovely. Definitely winds along the backroads of Napa but really gets you away from the main drag into the heart of wine country. In the Fall, the colors are turning and it's a gorgeous drive as long as its not raining. Lucky for us, it just started to rain as we were leaving The Hess. The exterior has some great photo ops. There's a nice walkway with a garden and outdoor patio, and a long, rectangular fish pond that looked muddy and lifeless (i'm guessing from the rain) until we saw flashes of bright orange and realized there were tons of goldfish swimming around! Also I love the building with the ivy growing all along the outside wall. When we arrived, it was crowded, lively, and actually quite noisy. Some, err, older females in a group (I didn't say cougar pack! Oops.) were getting a little tipsy, methinks! While we were tasting, one of said women approached the bar and asked to buy another round of tastings....then the pourer proceeded to cut her off. Ouch! But I understand the Hess' Responsibility pledge they have, it makes total sense. And believe, she needed someone to draw the line. I'm just saying. The wines we sampled were good, varied, reasonably priced. I liked the 19 block cuvee. I wish our pourer would have explained more about the wines, but he seemed to be scattered and focused his attention on more senior wine tasters...maybe because we look like newbies? I definitely got a snob vibe but hey, maybe I'm just being sensitive. The art museum isn't anything to write home about. Ive seen some amazing contemporary art exhibits and was a little taken aback at the displays upstairs. On the whole, this is a good tasting room to visit if you have company from out of town and want a pretty afternoon drive and reasonable tastings. The problem is, there are so many fantastic wineries with amazing views and delicious wines to choose from. I would put this in my top ten, but not my top five. read more

I love Hess!!! While traveling for work I met someone who lived in the bay area and told me Hess was one of his favorite wineries to visit. I asked why and this is what he said: "They have delicious wine, a beautiful art gallery, a knowledgeable yet down-to-earth staff and a beautiful estate" And to that, I will absolutely concur. They are a classic bunch I ordered their Sequana Russian River Valley off Lot 18 only to have it months later when I went to dinner in Napa...SO yummy. Took lots of beautiful pictures during my visit and bought some bomb-diggity bottles of red. They are all so nice there and even liked my Hess photos on instagram. The best bargain we encountered in Napa. The tour was complementary, as was their art exhibit (as in Hess Collection). Major contemporary artists such as Robert Rauschenberg, Francis Bacon, and others, made for a fascinating visit. Also, a very nice video presentation in a very comfortable theater. And again, all the above, complementary. The tasting ($20 per person, a share was offered) allows for a choice of 4 wines from a nice sized list. We elected not to split one tasting (Yelp promo 2 for 1!), so we could sample 8 varieties. We ended up buying some of their Reserve Pinot Noir. read more

Not a crazy wine drinker or "connoisseur" so coming here on my first stop through Napa Valley was the best. Thanks to the information that the bar keep explained about wine, I left here with a better understanding. The grounds are well kept and very nice to tour. They have a museum that you can take a look at while on the grounds or while you're waiting for a place at the bar. If you're not into art, they also have a cinema room where you can enjoy a movie about Napa Valley. The video takes you on a tour of Napa through the eyes of a drone. After touring all of the stuff in the museum, finally made it to the bar. The keep was very knowledgeable like he was a veteran. However, he did seem a little on the "off" side (stoned), but still answered all of our questions. They also have tables and chairs outside if you're not into any of the wineries. Come for the art (and the wine is not bad either). The Collection is not a scattering of various artists, but a nice presentation of multiple works by the same artist like Robert Rauschenberg, Francis Bacon, and Franz Gertsch. It is well worth the drive up the small Redwood Road. And it's free, but I'd still pay to see this collection which took 20 minutes to wander through. As for the tasting room, there is a $10 tasting fee for any 4 non-reserve wines. The tasting fee is waived with purchase of 6 bottles or more. The offered wines covered the full range of Hess creations - from the affordable Artezin label to the Hess mega-cabs. It would be hard not to like at least a couple of bottles. Yelp categorizes this place as an "art gallery" which is a subcategory of "shopping". They do not sell art here. Free admission to see great art plus free parking and a solid tasting room with affordable wines. What's there not to like? read more

Dig this place...really, really solid wine, beautiful setting & grounds, 'interesting' modern art collection (the 'electronic' and video stuff is very 1980's max headroom - and not in a good way - but you can't argue w/ an original F.Bacon), friendly staff... Minus one star for the place being in BFE (its so far off of the beaten Napa Hwy 29 winery track that its sort of a destination in and of itself) and for the tasting room being kind of small and plain - its the least interesting space of any of them. Well, I don't know a thing about wine. I like alcohol, and I've been told wine has a little bit of that mixed in with the grape juice. I can dig. We tried a variety of red wines (and one chardonnay) - 4 tastes for $10. Not too bad. I was a little disappointed that the one kind I know and love - sauvignon blanc - was not part of the featured wine list. But never fear, sav blanc fans! The nice ladies told me that they should have a delicious one in a few weeks. The art was cool - very "video installation" and concept art. Plus points go to the big picture of the blond girl that reminds me of Vigo from Ghostbusters Two. Oh silly Yanosh! (Yes, I have the mind of a 5 year old boy.) Oh, and the ladies in the tasting room were able to confirm something to my guy friend about romance: EVERYBODY, and I mean everybody, would melt if their significant other drove 500+ miles to surprise them on Valentine's Day. A "middle of the road" winery a few miles off the beaten path, but worth a visit at some point. I've been curious about Hess Collection for awhile, as it's known for its unique (free) art gallery. So we drove ourselves the ~7 winding miles off Hwy 29 to Hess. It's a nice winery - a small grass garden surrounds the building housing a small but cozy tasting room, the obligatory souvenir store, and a 3 story art gallery. We left with two bottles of Artezin Charbono ($30), a medium-bodied red reminiscent of a good pinot noir. The stars are for the art collection only--not a fan of any of the wines. It's like walking into a 20-minute film on the who's-who of 20th century art, with a definite preference for the sexy over the grossly misshapen and disturbingly colorful (which characterizes most modern art that makes it's way into museums in my completely amateur and totally biased opinion). The art collection was fantastic and powerful--all modern/contemporary with installations by Andy Goldsworthy--weird melting mounds and a dizzy circular wall (literally, he made a wall) sculpture entirely out of thorns that kind of blows your mind engineering-wise. The Johanna II "photograph" is fascinating and so are the huge sculptures on the second floor, especially the one that looks like a huge UFO landed in someone's yarn basket. read more

Caveat: I am not a wine snob. Came here on a warm summer afternoon, midweek so it was not crowded at all. Drive to the winery was beautiful... think narrow road and twisting trees overhead. Spent a lovely hour cruising the free art museum. I chose this winery because my favorite artist, Andy Goldsworthy, has a few installations and some art pieces here! Wine tasting was enjoyable. Since we live in Lafayette East bay, we try different wine tasting places. So this time since we were taking our dog with us, we specifically looked for a 'dog friendly' winery and chose Hess because we have never been there. We get there, the place is nice from outside but they do not let our dog in. They say 'you can leash her outside'... there are 100000 other places that you can do that, the reason we chose you was because you advertised that this place IS dog friendly. Part winery, part Art museum.... Hess is an interesting and beautiful place to visit. You won't be tasting the Hess select wines here, but their nicer collections from their grapes on-site here and in Sonoma/Napa (Hess select wines from from other parts of CA). A really beautiful place, I could imagine throwing a rehearsal dinner here. The winery features an extremely old farmhouse which has been substantially renovated to house tasting rooms, barrel rooms, operations, and the modern Art museum. read more
