Words can't describe the amazing experience my partner and I had over the weekend. We went this past Sunday and did the ATV vineyard tour and tasting. Our tour guide Eileen was friendly knowledgeable and very attentive. As far as the wine and culinary pairing WOW chef Chad Hendrickson really out did himself. The food was impeccable. We left craving more. We definitely will be returning in the near future. Thank you Hess !!

This review is for the gallery portion. I absolutely loved walking through the private gallery, the pieces were amazing! I definitely want to come back for a tasting at some point!

Blending my own wine!
Melody C.

We spent the afternoon at the Hess Collection starting off with a quick tour of the place, then did a wine blending course. The highlight of this spot was how tucked away it was and how quiet it was. Since they aren't taking any walk-ins, we pretty much had the entire place to ourselves! It was so wonderful. We were able to sample the different wines before blending them, then had the opportunity to create and test three different blends before deciding on our favorite. We also corked and foiled our own small bottle to take home! It was a really fun experience that I highly recommend!

Art in the collection

Steve has our hearts. Easily one of the best tour guides we've ever had, he made us feel welcome and free to ask questions. As two folks who aren't the most knowledgeable about wine, asking questions can be daunting. But Steve made it easy to relax and fun to learn. The team at Hess is beyond lucky to have someone as dedicated and hospitable as Steve on staff, and we look forward to seeing him again. Not only do we plan on coming back to Hess, but we plan on bringing friends and family. This winery visit was truly one of the best we've ever done. The art collection was incredible and we hope to see it continue to grow. This winery is a hidden gem nestled in the hills, and it is worth every penny to visit. Oh, and don't even get me started on the wines - truly delicious! Great variety and really neat to learn about how each is produced.

This winery is awesome! In addition to amazing wines, they also have an awesome art collection! The help here was great, Alexandra was fantastic on our tour of the grounds and art collection. We enjoyed our trip so much we joined the wine club too! We will be back for several more wine tastings!

Let's start with the long list of good stuff I have to say. The winery itself has some wonderful grounds. It's definitely not on the main drag. I kept saying in the car I thought the GPS was wrong, there is no way there is a winery out here, but there was! The grounds are beautiful, it's on the mountainside, the staff was wonderful, there is a cool monastery there, and they have an amazing three-floor art museum. Our tour guide Austin was wonderful. Gave one of the best-curated tours and tastings we had on our Napa trip. He had so many interesting facts to tell us about their history and wine. We did an upgraded wine tasting with chocolates. Whoever baked the chocolates did an amazing job. One of the most perfect tempered chocolates I have ever seen. The flavors in those were wonderful as well. Those were all the good things. I don't really have anything bad to say because perhaps it's just a personal preference, but me and several others in the group didn't enjoy the wine as much as we did other places we visited. It just wasn't perhaps our cup of tea, but we still really enjoyed our overall experience.

Mt. Veeder Cabernet tasting

A bit further away from most of the wineries along the 29 and Silverado Trail, Hess Collection is located along the windy roads atop Mount Veeder. Stunning location with various collections of art to enjoy in their museum. Sadly, no sipping wine while admiring the pieces, but totally understandable. We've been members for about a year, and joined because we fell in love with their red blends, Pinot, and Cabs. Some of our favorites include: Small Block Reserve Pinot Noir, Malbec, Napa Valley Reserve Cabernet, and Mount Veeder 19 Block Cuvee. We choose to pick up our wines, since we live close by. Each time we've been here, the staff have been great. Shoutout to Jan and Jen for the warm hospitality every time we're there!

Steve was a delightful & knowledgeable wine guide. I am so glad I bought a few bottles! Zinfandels and Syrahs are delish!

Cool winery. Beautiful outdoor area to just sip and relax although I think they only allow it during certain times of the season. You get to do a wine tasting as well as view pieces of art throughout the building. Also you don't have to do the wine tasting, you can just visit the winery to see the artwork. Pretty cool pieces.

Had the most amazing experience today on the ATV tour and Wine Tasting with cheese pairing at Hess Persson. Steve was our tour guide and made the experience knowledgeable, memorable, and fun! Worth every penny and will definitely recommend to friends in the future!

Great place if you're interested in more than just wine in Napa. We did the art + wine/cheese tour. It was really informative. The tour knowledge seemed to be based on your guide and luckily we had an amazing one but others seem to just glaze over the art. After the tour, we went into a private room for the wine/cheese pairing. The room was gorgeous! Also, most cheese pairings are a throwaway but Hess did it right. The cheese is high quality and worth the pairing (from cowgirl creamery). Overall a great time!

Our time at Hess Persson Winery was a perfect blend of excitement and refinement. The staff especially our tour guide Edgar was so welcoming, kind, and accommodating especially when I learned I booked the tour for the wrong date. The ATV tour offered breathtaking vineyard views, setting the stage for a delightful grape tasting. The winery's charming setting added an extra layer of enjoyment. A sophisticated touch awaited us at the end--a cheese tasting in an art gallery. The flavors paired seamlessly with the wines, creating a memorable finale.

Breathtaking, beautiful, and perfect!! Gus was so amazing with our cheese & wine pairings. He gave us recommendations on places to eat around the area. And even brought us over to see the de-stemmer and try some of the grapes. Amazing experience and delicious wine of course. The pairing was exceptional, definitely worth the trip out to Napa. Cheers

Ask the Community - Hess Persson Estates

I will visit tommorrow. Do i need to book for museum and winery tour?

Since it is a busy weekend, I would recommend it. We went mid-week, and booked, then got there earlier than expected, and were able to change the time.

Hi are we able to skip tasting and just by a bottle to enjoy on the grounds?

Are babies, 8 months old, allowed at the winery?

Hi Debbie, children are welcome in our tasting room for public tastings and in the art museum, however for experiences we often combine groups and that would not be advised, but you may request a private experience to accommodate. Thank you

Are dogs allowed in the outside area?

HI Danielle- As we are a food facility we cannot have dogs at our tasting room, aside from service animals. Thank you

Quality/Quantity - I had a hard time with the website making my appointment, it's a user issue as I am just not tech savvy. So I called and someone actually answered the phone and made my appointment for me, THANK you! We arrived 15 mins early, so we hung out in the lobby reading all the history, etc. Then Skip took us to the best view overlooking the vineyard for our tasting; see pictures! We sampled almost ALL the reds! All of which were good. See pictures. I like the fact that we did side by side tastings of many of his wines. My favorites were the 2022 Primitivo and 2021 Malbec, which we bought a few bottles of. Ambiance - Secluded private winery. Close to main Downtown Napa, but far enough away for privacy and a feeling of being far away. Appointment only, so very private and customer focused. Typically no more than 3 parties at a time. Today was considered a very busy day as there were 4 parties including us, lol. Gated private estate. 200 acres. Plenty of parking, especially since hosting only 3 guests at a time. Events - See their website. Well behaved dogs are allowed outdoors. Service - Skip is a history buff and we both talked for hours... After leaving, well really the next day (LOL), I realized that our tasting was supposed to be only 60 minutes. I guess because we got along so well, we stayed until closing! And he gave me a glass with a generous splash and let us walk the property alone after they left! So welcoming and trusting. Price - Depends on which tasting and what you buy; see their website for prices. Tastings range from $50 to $100 per person. One free designated driver allowed. Tasting fees waived with wine equivalent purchases. Hike tours $75 per person ($60 for club members). See their website for more information. Owner Comment - Congrats on your family's success since 1939 and congrats to this winery's success since 1992.

That energy truly set the tone for the night. There were two bartenders working as well, and they were just as personable and down-to-earth. Our glasses never went empty. While they don't have bar snacks yet, the sense of community was real, people around the bar were happily sharing Trader Joe's snacks, which honestly added to the charm. The vibe here was incredible. Between the friendly crowd, comfortable seating, and bright, inviting lighting, it felt easy to settle in and stay awhile. I'll definitely be back, mainly to see Mr. Bill, but also to sip on some Chris Bubbles.

The rail follows alongside the highway so views were not necessarily 'outstanding' because I was on the train. I do not need to ride this train to see these views. I did not have to drive, that brings the rating up, but there are MANY ways to not drive in Napa. It was a little rickety, but acceptable. The food, 2/5 stars, substandard for the cost. Portions were small (half a piece of bacon, 1 small egg for a Benedict, etc.) and taste was middle of the road. The service/staff 4/5. Most everyone was very hospitable and did their job well. However, it did feel as if we were 'just another group'. Everything is very script and not especially personalized. For example, I'm on a wine train and no one asked my wine preference. Which brings me to the wine we tasted on the train 1/5. I expected a higher quality of tastings. In addition, offer a choice of flight, white or red or a mix of both. Or, hear me out...offer wine pairings for each course (included with my ticket, not for extra cost). Stopping at the sign and enjoying the tasting in the open car was a wonderful choice, wine selection is greatly lacking and to be honest, a great disappointment. Overall, I enjoyed my time, but this was not necessarily due to being on the Napa train specifically, it was because I was on vacation in Napa. I could see the business cutting costs in almost every aspect and that is unfair because I am paying a premium cost of approx. $100/h. And for some of that time, I'm at the winery and not even on the train. Which brings me to the end of my rating, for the stops 2.9/5. The stops felt rushed, especially our first stop. They are about an hour each, but this includes disembark and reembark times. I wanted a little more time at each winery to make a purchase or walk the grounds. I will not be recommending this particular experience, I believe many improvements can be made. Lastly, I booked this experience due to several social media content creators experience. These creators are getting their experiences paid for. Be sure to read ratings from those of us not being sponsored.
