This is a wonderful and one-of-a-kind experience onboard a restored vintage train. The train cars are elegant with wood lined tables, etched glass partitions and velvet-plush seats in the lounge car. The staff are welcoming and friendly. We had assigned seats in the dining car, which had a glass of sparking wine already poured upon arrival. There is a Prix Fixe menu to choose a Starter, Entree and Dessert. We selected the Roasted Beet Salad, Salmon and Braised Short Rib meal with Chocolate Lava Cake for dessert. You can order additional glasses of wine during the meal for a separate charge. Three meal packages are available, you must reserve and pre-pay via their website: - 3-hour with 3-course meal $261 per person. One glass of sparking wine. - 3-hour with 3-course meal with wine pairing, $415 per person. - 6-hour with 4-course meal with wine pairing and dancing. $600 per person. Sincerely, Rosemary

Was a nice experience. BUT definitely NOT WORTH the $900 tickets for me and my partner. Honestly the food they served was average.. Would I do it again ? The answer is No. It's better to spend that money driving yourself around Napa and go into whichever winery you're interested instead and hang out throughout the day and would cost much cheaper with better views. Not worth the money ...

Great experience every time! We've done the Legacy Experience twice now & it's an outstanding 6-hour event with several stops at some great wineries in Napa. The staff do an incredible job at spacing out the servings of wine between meals that serve as a great way to manage the alcohol intake & prevent getting sick.

Wonderful experience. Be certain to book your ride in the dome car where you could get the full experience of the beautiful vineyards. The food was fantastic.

A must-do in Napa for sightseers :D I love the wine train... My family booked this for my birthday a few years back and I'm getting around to reviewing it now. In fact, I'm due for another visit methinks...! I remember the food and drink to be enjoyable and high quality, along with excellent service. Fond memory... But I also remember it as very pricy. IMO the experience as a whole is worth it. Their menus are seasonal so I'm uncertain whether the dishes I had are available now... But I have no doubt that their chefs have curated a fine menu regardless :3

What an amazing and truly great experience I had at the Napa Valley Wine Train. This was my first time and we decided on the gourmet lunch experience. Each cart is called by number and you get in a line before boarding. Before boarding they also take your picture which you can purchase at the end of the tour. Food options were delicious and they have extra options to add on such as appetizers and extra drinks. It was a 3 course meal with dessert. You are seated throughout the tour and have small breaks to get up and walk around. Truly a wonderful experience but be prepared to sit for long hours. Staff were beyond great and made the experience even better!

I love afternoon tea and having it on a train was such a delightful experience. We had reservations, so everything was a breeze when we checked in. There was a 360 photobooth and few photo ops as well as a souvenir shop you can check out while we waited to board. They announce when you need to line up and you also get a photo as a keepsake. The decor on the train is so pretty with lots of artificial flowers. The meal comes with seasonal greens salad and carrot ginger soup to start with. You can add caviar for an additional price of $149, but we did not LOL. The pastries were yummy and little savory bites were delicious and presented beautifully. The tea bites consisted of deviled eggs with salmon roe, cucumber chive, chicken salad, smoked salmon tartare on potato rosti, and lobster salad choux. For endings, we had honey pear mousse, peppered cheddar scone, champagne cupcake, and citrus mirliton cake. They even gave us a few extras! You can also take home what you don't finish. This train is also dog friendly! Overall, I had a really nice time here! It's definitely worth it if you are in Napa Valley and love afternoon tea!

My bestie and I did the 3-hour tea ceremony experience ($660 for two), and it was such a fun time. The train is beautifully decorated with flowers, and you're immediately greeted with a cup of tea with several options to choose from. We really loved this option because we don't drink alcohol. You're served a set course menu alongside your tea while taking in the views and light history along the ride. It really delivered a one of a kind train experience I was hoping for. The tea service itself was great, and the staff were funny and welcoming, which made the experience even more enjoyable. Most of the tea snacks were delicious, though the deviled eggs and salmon tartare were a miss as they tasted overly fishy and not very fresh. We added the caviar experience for $180 and this was so worth it! The caviar is a wine train exclusive paired with various condiments like creme fraiche with thin and cripy potato chips. A few of the desserts also didn't quite land, either too sweet or off in texture, but it didn't take away from the overall experience.

This was a great experience, my husband birthday surprise trip on the Napa wine Train and I was excited because all the great things I've heard before. All of the staff were very helpful and courteous. The salmon dinner was flavorful and delicious and so was the short rib. I was hoping there would be more than just a complementary glass of champagne that was included in the ticket, but we may do with the wine list that was available. I was a little disappointed with the map of views until we arrived in the area of the wineries which was nicer, but the other views from the train ride seem to be in popish areas with views of liquor stores and homeless people, but overall, it was a great experience. The Train itself was beautiful and my husband and I enjoyed ourselves.

It still lives up. So I went on Napa Valley Wine Train for one of my first anniversaries with the missus. I thought for our 10 year anniversary we could try it out again and man am I glad its still worth it. Even though the time said arrival at 10:30, we arrived at 11am and that was still fine. I think they just wanna give you time to look around in the store nearby incase you are thinking you might want to buy an item or a wine. After you check in, shortly after they will car your letter and ask for you to board the train. It's all very similar to going on a typical airplane flight except it's more close to Southwest's style where the sooner you check in, the sooner you will most likely be boarding the train. I'm not sure if they start serving drinks the minute you get on but that could be a consideration on why you might wanna show up rather than later. Before you board they take a picture of you/group. So if you want to that particular picture just know you can do that once you arrive back from your trip. Once we arrived on the train they sat us and we ordered some drinks to start. I ordered a Locomotive Sangria and it was really tasty. I loved how despite it being a little lighter than most Sangria's I drink, it still had a really nice balance of flavors. For food I ordered the Seasonal Sangria. It ended up being a Pea Risotto. Again, this also was lighter than other Risotto's I had but I really enjoyed the earthiness of the dish. It was a fun change to the usual seafood or mushroom Risotto I'm so used to getting. Lastly we got a dessert wine to share and some sorbet for dessert. They put a candle in it to commemorate our anniversary. It was a really nice touch. The ride honestly goes faster than you think it will. It's really cool that we have such a nice experience that isn't too far from where we live. I really enjoyed just enjoying the occasional street art on the walls as we left and of course the views of the Napa County countryside. I definitely think if you are a local you should try this at least once. For me I'm a little biased because I'm a sucker for trains.

This was my first time on the wine train and we had a blast. We opted for the 3 hour tasting on the rails experience, which was great for us because we had evening plans. The views were amazing, our hosts Nick and Leilani were awesome. They explained everything that we were going to be tasting and also gave us history on the winery that we passed by while on the train. I recommend this experience if you want a chill vibe while taking in some great Napa scenery. Service 10/10 Food 10/10 Wine 9/10 Experience 9/10

Amazing experience! Wife and I loved this experience we had an amazing time! The staff were very nice and helpful. The food was so good the short rib dish was a must have! The wine list was great and so was the beer menu. The train felt very cool sitting in your own booth and looked very old school! They were very informative of the winery's we passed along our adventure. We plan to upgrade our tickets next time and try the 6 hour train ride sounded very interesting. Thank you again to the staff and train operators for the safe ride around the valley!

Napa Valley Wine Train Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Napa Valley Wine Train

Are they able to accommodate food allergies ie celiac (gluten free)?

Yes, they can modify the menu.

Is there a vegan food option?

Yes there are vegan options however we did not have

For those who experienced the wine train, did you book it directly through the napa valley wine train site? Is there a booking site that has a better price and legit?

book it directly through the napa valley wine train site, yes!

Is there any prearranged way to get back to your car after the ride or is it up to the passenger to figure that out?

This is all presuming that you book direct: The wine train offers a ferry or bus (if the ferry isn't running) from the San Francisco Ferry Building. This is at an additional fee (in January '20, it was $180 for the two of us), but if you coming…

First timer here. Which wine train package do you prefer?

I was with my husband, it was a birthday and we participated with the dinner for two package

Can we bring our own bottle of wine ? We are celebrating and want to bring a very special bottle.

Yes, but you have to pay a corkage fee. Not sure how much it is though

When it comes to their murder mystery train ride, how much participation do the patrons have to do? Is it as simple as checking off boxes while eating dinner? We have some in our group that want ZERO responsibility/don't want to be pulled in/act....?

The Napa train ride is not a mystery train. You just ride the train, stop at wineries and eat delicious food. No responsibilities.

Are tastings at the wineries included?

    Negative.

    Is this kid-friendly?

Yes! It's a fun trip for the whole family.

    Dress code here?

It's pretty much smart casual. Some folk prefer to dress up and that's ok. The lunch is more laid back smart casual but the dinner trip may require more of a dress up. Jeans and ultra casual gear just don't lend themselves to the situation but that…

Do you have a good vegan option? Example? Thank you

Ok. Thanks so much for speedy response

I'm wondering how dressed up my friend & I can get for the Summer sunset dinner without sticking out like sore thumbs? We want to dress up for our girls night :)

Think summer outdoor wedding and you'll be just fine. I would be a little careful with a really high heel though since it's an old train. Have a wonderful time! Don't forget a sweater since it cools off quickly at night (I sound like a mom).

My wife was adamant in wanting to do the Sonoma foodie tour since she had never been in Sonoma before. Sherry kept in constant contact with my wife by email & text as she was our same tour guide back then. In fact she called her the day before & expressed concern of establishments not fully opened due to covid. So she managed to persuade my wife to do the foodie tour in Napa again instead. Maybe bc my wife told her she was wearing a long dress. Yup that did it! Sherry had started us at the infamous Oxbow public market with taking pics of the 4 of us in front. Yes that was a plus bc how often do you vacation & you do a quick selfie of everywhere you go? Ugh...all the time! LOL Sherry was informative, personable & quite the leader for our tour. She was sensitive to our needs & we totally enjoyed our six different stops walking leisurely from Oxbow market to throughout downtown Napa & back to the market. We had even walked by their farmers market which was on a Tuesday but unfortunately they were in the process of closing up since it was already noon. Our tour was a full three hours & we were totally satiated. What was quite enjoyable was we were with another couple whom we already knew in advance. Supposedly there was supposed to be 6 of us but that third couple mistakenly came the day before. Haha my wife said it was bc the Mercury was in retrograde! This foodie tour was ultimately like our own private tour! Yay! It was also to celebrate my wife's birthday. She had the time of her life. Thank you Sherry! Hope to go on your foodie tour in Sonoma one day soon! Book your next foodie tour here in Napa with Sherry! I highly recommend her. I loved how much communication you got about the experience beforehand via email. Definitely read those emails as you will know where to park, etc. Each restaurant had a different feel/vibe and totally different food. That really helped us to experience all that the downtown area had to offer. In some places, the owner or proprietor would come out and give a short spiel. In others, we were left to enjoy the company of our newly-made friends. Although I didn't have any food restrictions, Rooted Fork does honor them and we had 4 people on our tour who did have certain restrictions, including 2 vegetarians. Unfortunately it seemed that some of the restaurants didn't understand. In one place, the 2 vegetarians were served heaping plates of fish. The funny thing is that's not what everyone else was served so this means they prepared these fish dishes specifically for people who do not eat fish. Thankfully, once explained to the servers a few times over, they brought out alternate dishes for these folks. If you are new to the area, this is a really fun way to get the lay of the land and figure out where you might want to have dinner.

When you keep coming back, you know you've found something special. Owner Gale has built a truly exceptional operation. The equipment is always in great condition, the booking process is smooth, and the overall experience feels well thought-out from start to finish. It's clear she genuinely cares about her guests and takes pride in what she's created. Our guide James was fantastic: knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and great at making the tour both educational and entertaining. He shared fascinating details about the wetlands ecosystem, local wildlife, and the history of the area, all while keeping the energy light and fun. The wetlands setting itself is breathtaking: a peaceful, scenic route that feels completely different from the usual Napa wine country experience. It's a perfect outing for families, couples, or anyone looking to explore the area in a unique and memorable way.

The tour guides are ran by a mother and son. We had the son, James. He took us to 4-5 different places known by locals and let me tell you, lines were out the door for these places. We tried one thing off the menu that was chosen by the tour guides. I was skeptical because I'm picky when it comes to food but everything was so good. The segways were so fun too. Definitely would do it again.

This place was amazing!!! We weren't sure what to expect because it was our first time going on a…read moreballoon ride, but it's definitely something I can say I'm glad I did. I'll start from he beginning cause there's alot to unfold in this review. We met up at the Napa Valley wine train at 5:30 am. Don't be late cause a few people were and we were waiting on them. They give you your itinerary and you sign a waiver , and the. You meet your pilot. They drove us in their vans to the take off point which was off the train track. See the video, it was amazing. I was worried that the wind might be to much fir the too lift off, but they said if they can't, they have alternative locations. Once we got I'm the air it was very smooth and very relaxing. There we about 20 people in our basket. Not alot of room, but keep in mind your not going to move around in the balloon basket . We rose up in the ir and went where the wind took us. After our pilot explained everything to us we were confident he knew what he was doing . He even took us inside a hillside where we were able to get close to some trees . Landing was pretty smooth. They picked up up with their vans and drive us back. And this is where it goes from 4 stars to 5. We purchase the champagne package which I highly recommend. We got to share a bottle of champagne with our pilot and he told us all about the first hot air ballon, which was way before airplanes , and explained to us where the name Pilot came from. Overall , it was a great end to a great experience and I highly recommend it .

We the weather being so unpredictable we had to wait. I was fine with wait because i do value my life. I had the chance to cross off a major item from my bucket list. A hot air balloon ride and wow, what an experience! The views were absolutely breathtaking. Floating high above the landscape, seeing everything from a completely new perspective, was truly magical. The sunrise was especially beautiful as we drifted along, and the silence up there, broken only by the loud occasional burst of the burner, was unlike anything I've ever experienced. That said, there were a few things to consider. The heat from the burner can be overwhelming, especially if you're not prepared for it. I didn't wear a hat, and I really wish I had and i am short 5'2 those blasts of hot air can get pretty intense when they hit you directly! So, if you're planning this trip, definitely bring something to cover your head. The landing was a bit of a wild ride, too. The ground was much harder and more uneven than I expected, and we didn't quite know where we'd land until we were almost on top of it. Also getting in and out can be extremely challenging. It's hard climbing into and out of the basket and it's very tightly packed. Not a lot of space to move. I knew the risks going in but the whole experience was so worth it. Even with those little surprises, it was absolutely incredible. Would I do it again? Definitely not! Despite the heat and the bumpy landing, the beauty of the experience makes it all worthwhile and a one timer for me. I highly recommend it if you're looking for something unique and unforgettable to add to your list of adventures. Just don't forget your hat!

We returned to Sonoma in 2026 with a small group and booked another tour. Booking and communication was a breeze. Very good. Ends up the property I rented offered a wine passport and we were to receive a discount. I called to confirm and they let me know the driver would apply the discount when we paid him the day of the tour. All sounded wonderful and was very clearly communicated. The tour in 2026 only went to 3 wineries. Two were just ok and one was not good. I don't think anyone on our tour purchased anything here. The time at each winery was like a typical tasting with some information on their winery. But no real information on Sonoma and Napa and the history of the area. At the end our driver had no clue on our discount and kept telling me he would get in trouble for charging me less. He insinuated I was making it all up. In the end he did honor the discount but seemed he did it as a favor not that it was a program that Platypus participates in. All in all I was disappointed in this wine tour and would no go on a platypus tour again and would not recommend them. Maybe we just caught them on a bad day. Luckily all the people on our tour were delightful so that made for a nice day.
