Obsidian Ridge Winery has been one of our favorite wineries for years, and it continues to impress every time we visit. We were first introduced to them back when they had their tasting room at Cornerstone Gardens in Sonoma. The setting there was incredibly welcoming--especially with our three young kids at the time--and between the atmosphere and the wines, we were hooked from the start. The wines are consistently outstanding. Their Lake County lineup really stands out, and the Volcanic Estate Cabernet has been a go-to in our house for years--it's always been reasonably priced and somehow overdelivers every single time we open a bottle. On the other end of the spectrum, the Half Mile is more of a special occasion wine for us, and it never disappoints. Winemaker Alex clearly knows what he's doing--his reds are fantastic across the board. The Cabernet, Petit Verdot, and Malbec from that volcanic Lake County fruit are bold, expressive, and incredibly well made. We've been wine club members for years now, which says a lot. Great wines, great people, and a place that's been part of our family's wine journey for a long time. Highly recommend. read more

Our group of 11 scheduled a tasting here while in town for a meeting. Staff were friendly and very knowledgeable about the wines. We knew ahead of time that they didn't have any food for purchase but they said we could bring snacks; we were glad we did as the $30 tasting is the equivalent of at least 2 glasses of wine. Only downside was that since we did have food we had to sit out in the sun; it would help if they had a canopy or umbrellas for the outside area; we took turns rotating through the shaded spots. Heads up to bring sunscreen and a hat if you do bring snacks to accompany your wine tasting. We really enjoyed the wines and would have bought some to bring home if we had room in our luggage! read more

can't say enough good things about our visit to this winery. Tje wines were fantastic, but what truly made the experience unforgettable were Gwen and Ed. Their service was nothing short of exceptional. From the moment we arrived, Gwen welcomed us with a level of warmth and professionalism that instantly set the tone. She's incredibly knowledgeable--able to explain each wine with clarity, passion, and just the right amount of detail. You can tell she genuinely loves what she does, and it shows in the way she connects with guests. Ed was equally impressive. His depth of knowledge about the winemaking process added so much richness to our tasting. He answered every question with patience and enthusiasm, making the experience feel both educational and personal. We really enjoyed our tasting at Obsidian. Generally, I'm not of fan of Chardonnay, but Obsidian has a very accessible, smooth, slightly buttery blend without the "oak". The sparkling petite sirah is simply outstanding. The estate cab was also a nice approachable, smooth red. Our only miss was the proprietary red blend which we found a little harsh. There's no hard sell. Also, no snacks. If you want something to eat while you're enjoying your wine, you'll need to bring your own or hit up the restaurant around the corner. It's hard to find a winery where we love it all. On an average, we find 2 out of 6 wines that we like. Sometimes even less than that. But we found "love it all" it within Obsidian. First off, it's not your ordinary winery with the acres of vineyards with ever so many barrels and so forth. It's a wine shop where you can just sit and leisurely enjoy every pour. Located in the Cornerstone Sonoma, there's plenty of parking spaces, a restaurant, little boutique shops, a garden for private venues...it was a quiet place, away from the crowd. That was a plus especially with the ongoing pandemic. We don't like overly busy places with crowds. This place was just the getaway that we needed. It was easy to make a reservation the day of. All of their wines are produced in limited cases, in which majority are aged in Hungarian barrels. This already felt special. As we sip away, we can't help but to stop and thoroughly allow the tannins to linger in our palate. We couldn't help but to savor each taste because something about the characteristics that Hungarian barrels offer the grapes, tasted different. Tannins were present, it couldn't be missed! We were amused how grippier the tannins developed as we went down the tasting list. Simply put, we were blown away. Our wine connoisseur, Cort, who most graciously and generously took care of us, went above and beyond during our tasting. The knowledge he shared and the way he spoke about the history of Obsidian showed he was very passionate for what he does. That was amazing! I love both whites and reds, but husband prefers red. So Cort accommodated our preference for all reds and thank goodness for that because we fell in love with each and every one of them. But that didn't mean I was restricted from trying one of my favorites, Sauvignon Blanc. The minerality that's only distinct to a Sauvignon Blanc was perfectly showcased. Wow! They make really good wines. We didn't find a single one that we disliked. As we go through their wine list, something caught our eyes. Pear blanc. Pear cider mixed with Sauvignon Blanc. Some would say, "The audacity!" But we said, "Yes, please!" It was so refreshing and light and sparkling. It's the perfect summer drink and it's definitely be a crowd pleaser. Summer is almost here. I'm going to stock up. We fell in love that we became wine members. Took 7 bottles home. Cort also tipped us on an older vintage Petit Verdot that they've found hiding, so of course, being the wine collector that I am, I had to buy one. Husband shakes his head, but he always lets me get my way. Lol. We're ready to go back when the new season releases. The perks of being wine members mean we get to taste for free with 2 other friends. Life is better with wine. Wouldn't you agree? Ah~ (sigh of relief) 2023 already feels great! read more

We love Obsidian! We've been members for several years now and their wines are top notch. It's a great club to be a member of as they have a full spectrum of varietals. From Chardonnay to Pinot to Cab, they have it all. And I haven't tasted a bad wine yet. They recently moved to a new space in Sonoma Square. It's a little hidden but once you find it, it's a beautiful modern oasis. Great building and outdoor space surrounded by lovely greenery. The people here are awesome. They're knowledgeable and passionate about Obsidian wines! The wines are priced right and you get alot for your money. You can buy a $50 bottle of wine here that rivals some of the $200+bottles we've had. Obsidian is our go to. Excellent wine, in an awesome space with great people. read more

There's a cute restaurant across from Obsidian that looked good but we didn't go to this trip. Very family-friendly facility and gorgeous grounds to tour after. Lots of benches and beautiful gardens! Will definitely come back when everything is more in bloom and try other wines! Every label had a cool story too so be sure to ask if that intrigues you! Got to learn all about the wines on their vast property that are grown at multiple locations and elevations and appreciate the differences in taste. This place is awesome! Get out of Napa and check out the coolest place to taste some great wines for a super low price that is refundable against bottle purchases. Obsidian is an under rated vineyard. Most people are familiar with their Cab that is widely available. However they have many other limited releases that are only available through direct purchases. The tasting consisted of 5 beautiful wines. Casey was great. The staff here are low key, not pushy and fantastic. I ended up joining their wine club which is a great deal. Through it you have access to wines not otherwise available. I really wanted to sample the standard cab (not on the tasting menu) against their flagship limited production cab. Casey was accommodating. She also hooked us up with a taste of a couple others. Easily our best tasting experience in California on this trip. Kudos the staff here and the owners read more

There are three wine tasting rooms that reside in the lovely retail and suburban garden area known as the Cornerstone Gardens in outer Sonoma and I think Obsidian Wine might be my favorite one of all three of them. The Obsidian wine tasting room is actually two wine tasting rooms, one featuring wines of Obsidian Ridge and a second featuring the wines from their sister winery Poseidon Vineyard. Obsidian is named after a naturally occurring volcanic glass that forms as an igneous rock. Apparently this rock formation is found in Lake County, north of Napa, which is where Obsidian grows their harvest, where as Poseidon Vineyard grows its wine in South Napa where the Napa River empties out into the Bay. These sister wineries both actually started as vineyards to provide grapes to other wineries, then they purchased a barrel cooperage company in Kadar Hungary, which still make roughly 6 to 8,000 wine barrels a year with some of the world's finest oak and ship them to different wineries around the world, before they started makes their own wines for the public to enjoy. Our host Scott treated us to not only their Current Release Tasting which is a very affordable 20 dollars and features wine from both wineries. My friend and I decided to split a sampling and when my friend purchased a couple bottles that was exclusive to club members. our tasting fee was waived. Our tasting began gradually weaved from whites to reds beginning with their 2017 Obsidian Ridge Sauvignon Blanc, which was light yet fruity on the nose. From there, we moved onto the 2016 Poseidon Vineyard Chardonnay, also known as "The Bench". Then the final three tastings were all reds: the 2016 Poseidon Vineyard Estate Pinot Noir, followed by the 2016 Obsidian Ridge "Nicholas Block" Malbec, and we concluded with the Obsidian Ridge "The Slope" Cabernet Sauvignon. We really enjoyed their Pinot Noir which had a smokey and cherry bouquet to it along with a strong oakey aftertaste if eventually paired with pork chops. Their Malbec, which was not as earthy as their Argentinian cousins, we learned every time you open a bottle, it smells like a blueberry pie and still has a ton of fruit when you put the glass of wine to your nose. Also of note was their "Slope" Cabernet Sauvignon which is grown on the slope of their vineyards in Lake County, hence the name. This Cabernet Sauvignon was barrel aged for 14 months in their Kadar Hungarian Oak. This wine had a beautiful taste of cherries and raspberries and a deep peppery aftertaste to every sip. Scott was so nice, after we got to talking to him and learning about the history of the wineries and local area, he gave us a sixth taste in their 2016 Obsidian Ridge Estate Cabernet Sauvignon which was an easy drinking cabernet for a very affordable 32 dollars. And then we even received a seventh pour, which was their amazing Obsidian Ridge "The Cinders" Syrah. He even gave my friend their Club Member price for their Cabernet Sauvignon, which is only sold to members. We also learned that Obsidian managed to stay up and running from the recent Napa wildfires, but they did suffer smoke damage to some their grapes. Thankfully there was a harvest from 2018, while Poseidon had a great harvest thanks to growing their grapes in Southern Napa. The service, the unique wines, the intimate atmosphere are all reasons are all reasons to visit to Obsidian Wine, we even saw people eating their lunch from the nearby cafe on their patio as they sampled a wine tasting. Obsidian is a hidden gem that deserves to be discovered by everyone who visits the lush Cornerstone Gardens. read more

A true gem in the Cornerstone complex... one tasting and we became members, and always stop in when in the area. Not only are the wine spectacular, the staff are the nicest, most approachable, laid-back, yet knowledgeable people. They have always have chardonnay and unique, bold reds, and sometimes rose and sav blanc - although these sell out quickly. Their "Cinders" which was released in 2017 and is a very complex, smoky, ever-expanding red blew us away and I buy several bottles every visit. It's a great place to go for a tasting on a warm day, as you can enjoy on their patio while people-watching. Can't say enough about this place... Unlike usual, I'll start with the one, slightly negative aspect, if you are looking for a traditional winery view, this isn't it. The tasting room is located in a small CO-Op with other businesses. However, the grounds are maintained by Sunset Magazine and immaculate and the location did not detract from an overall awesome experience. First off, Casey, who was our server was extremely polite, helpful, and made the experience an absolute joy. The cost for a rating was reasonable and pours were generous. The wines were very enjoyable, we ordered many to be home when we returned from CA, and the local restaurant at the CO-OP made the experience better. We got excellent information about the winery and would love to go back. Highly recommend this being a stop on your wine tour. read more

Where do I begin? Not a happy camper. This place used to be so good and now it seems to be profit driven rather than customer service. At least, individually, to me at least. I have been buying wine by the bottle every time and never have been informed that if the bottle was over $40, a tasting was comped. Fast forward to today: I was waiting for somebody to do a a tasting for me at 3 pm. Not only did not anyone come up to me, it seems the staff either didn't know, didn't want to service me or it was a misunderstanding. I can get that. But what I don't understand is why somebody didn't at least come up to me to see how i was doing or if was I ready for the tasting. These two things in the hospitality business are crucial. I doubt if I'll be back as this among other things in the past have left a sour taste in my mouth. The wine is very good, but due to this I'll just order online or find another place from now on. read more

What a gem of a tasting room at Cornerstone Sonoma! I generally prefer visiting winery properties vs stand-alone tasting rooms, but we stopped in today and enjoyed a lovely tasting on the patio. Casey, who served us, was not just super knowledgeable, but the kind of person you wish you had as a neighbor (kind, funny, personable) and thought us a ton about the Obsidian/Poseidon wines. We had no intention of it when we arrived, but took home several bottles of Pinot (which I normally don't like at all, but really enjoyed here) and Syrah - we'll be back again soon for sure! read more

Now, I have to preface this review by saying that I was a pretty big fan of Obsidian's cabernet before visiting the winery. That being said, my fan-boy status went to another level after stumbling upon this little spot in the Cornerstone collection of wineries. It isn't the winery set amongst the rolling hills of the region. Rather, it is a small room set amongst a few other wineries along a major highway. It is cute, but not the grand chateau that you might be expecting of the area. Don't let that fool you. Their small wine room is serving up a pretty impressive array of wine whether you are a red or a white wine fan. Just start talking with the team at the room and share what you like and what you don't like. It's nothing to be ashamed of, we all like what we like! The team is pretty knowledgeable of their wine and share their passion for their product. It's already a great collection of wines, the team brings it to life and make it even better. After primarily being into whites and sweet wines the wife and I are just starting to get into reds. So we like wines that are on the softer, more fruit forward side. I had called up Ravenswood to see about booking a tour for the wife's birthday but the gentleman I spoke to over there said that we probably would not like their wines. So he suggested Posiedon. I called Poseidon and explained what we were looking for and the woman I spoke to couldn't have been more helpful. She told me that they would be sure to take care of us. I was told to ask for Scott or Marlene. Well when we got there at about 1pm on Sunday we were immediately greeted by both Marlene and Scott. Scott stayed with us the entire time and gave us a wealth of information about Poseidon and their vineyards. I ended up buying 2 bottles. Great wines and great people. read more

I came here for a big group (20 people) for a party and they were so accommodating and amazing! The price was perfect, the wine was all amazing, their outdoor patio is super nice and relaxing. They were definitely heavy on the poors- which come on, is AMAZING! We went to another winery after this place, but Obsidian was definitely the favorite of the group. I recommend calling ahead to reserve with a big group- from day 1 when i called they were really nice on the phone, easy to communicate with and I wasn't worried about anything! Our first experience in the Sonoma valley we wandered up to this little cohort of three tasting venues and a little bakery restaurant. We sat outside on the porch in the sunshine with blankets given to us generously by Marlene who happens to be the SWEETEST and cutest woman on the face of the planet. We were able to bring food in and the service was timely, informational, with kindness and humor. We feel so lucky to have come here first. What a great start to our spring break.
