I miss going to Herzog. This winery is a hidden gem. My husband and I love going wine tasting and enjoy the delicious tapas. The atmosphere is great. We belong to the World Tour wine club and we are pleased with the wines we have received. We have received wines from Israel, France, Italy, etc. and they are delicious. It was love at first site when I first walked into this place. I am a big red wine lover and it was my first time going wine tasting, kind of surprising for a wine lover, I know! This place has an amazing ambiance, the lighting is perfect, and it smells amazing. I love how it's always so mellow and relaxing, almost the same effect as being in a spa, I mean drinking wine helps with that effect too. I kept coming back here so many times with my classmates at the end of every week because it was the perfect way to end our school week. We were full time students then and we didn't have much money to spend on wine really, even for those of us who preferred spending their money on wine, but it was very affordable. The wine tasting is FREE if you buy ANY bottle of wine, which is incredible since they have many bottles under $20... You can even buy the $10 wine bottle and your tasting will still be free so it's awesome. All the servers I encountered were amazingly helpful, professional yet friendly, and made us feel at home. Ed and Martin are the ones I saw all the time and they're really awesome, always making sure to provide great service. I always hung out indoors with my friends, but they have an outdoor section too, but I believe it is only for reserving. Whenever we went with big groups we sat at the big tables, but if you're going with one or two people, sit at the bar, it's more fun and interactive. I haven't ordered much food from there, but their appetizers are limited, however, they're very delicious and of good quality. I love the fries and the beets apple salad. read more

Noticed this place as I was driving by, pulled in and googled the hours. They were opening in 5 minutes (10:30 am) so I sat in the car. My mom says you're not an alcoholic if you don't drink before noon, but she's on the east coast so I think that counts? Anyway, place was empty, I was greeted warmly and took a seat at the tasting bar. The young lady, Jessica, explained the tasting and off I went. Tried many wines, it was a fun experience. Only sad part was restaurant was closed. It is a kosher winery so they don't open on Fridays to be ready for the Sabbath. We met my family here for wine tasting and lunch. We arrived early so took the self-guided tour of the winery. They were not bottling while we were looking down on the facility but the signage describing the history of the company and their wine making processes was very interesting. There is a $10 charge for wine tasting. Six wines are presented. The wine maven, I think his name was Jonathan, was very friendly and knowledgeable. He didn't mind that we shared a tasting. I was driving so just took a sip of my husband's glasses. If you go to Herzog for lunch at Tierra Sur, take the time to do the self-guided winery tour. read more

I have hosted a private event here pre covid and it was great and I want to book a private event here again using thier private dining area but after days of trying to call them and only able to leave a voicemail and using their online contact us portion of their website I have not gotten a response. OK, I don't even know where to begin. I just had one of the most memorable meals of my life. The wife and I were celebrating a very special anniversary and I asked the team at Herzog if they could make me something truly special. Boy did they come through! I have no words to express the genius of Chef Gabe and his sous chef Eric. To say they are the dynamic duo is a gross understatement. If you have dined at Herzog you know what I mean. Speaking of Herzog, I understand that Joseph Herzog himself was also involved in procuring some of the wines for the pairing. Yasher Koiach! Let me preface that I'm not sure that this is always available, and this was more of a personal favor,however anytime you come to Herzog you can just order off their menu and make your own unbelievable experience. Having said that ,this was totally off the hook.Let me add that I believe this was the most well paired wine dinner that I've ever had. The wines complemented the dishes so perfectly it was unreal. Huge shout out to the manager Jonathan for creating the parings. OK,let's take it course by course. Course one:Pea soup with chicken skin. Now we were actually expecting a hot soup but we found out it was a coulis. My wife is not a fan, but the first bite turned her. What a fantastic way to begin the meal and the chicken skins took it over the top. Some bubbly went great with it. Course two: This was a last bite of summer. Compressed melon with three different types of cucumbers,which the chefs turned into this heavenly translucent creation. Oh and some Dragon fruit tied it all together along with some fingerling lime, and a hint of jalapeño. Paired with Herzogs entry-level Chenin Blanc ,which pretty much goes with any lightish dish and is one of the best wine bargains out there. Course 3: hamachi - yellowtail collar. This is an often overlooked part of the fish which is absolutely delicious. I've had it before at the local sushi place in LA,but this was on a whole new level. Grilled perfectly with a crispy skin .Paired with Herzog Russian River Chardonnay which is definitely my favorite white. Smooth and buttery. Very interesting the contrast between this and the Chenin Blanc. Course 4: This was a stunning Trio . Housemaid veal sausage with a great mustard sauce. Wagyu beef tartare on crispy potato chips.Their famous chicken liver with sweet grape emulsion. Wow, wow, wow! Washed it down real nice with their unique rose of Cabernet special reserve. Course 5: squab. That's right, squab. Never had this before thought this was really unique and special. Kind of like dark chicken with a bit of a livery consistency. Sublime! Accoutrements were pillowy potato gnocchi, the most delicious chanterelle mushrooms, and cherries to balance out the flavors. Now we started getting into their bolder wines with the 2011 limited edition Meritage. Course 6: orange crispy duck. This was related to an orange chicken dish that you might get at your local chinese place but raised to the next level with tender duck. It was on a bed of duck confit eggroll.Now the sauce was really rich and the fire stone IPA really cut through it. Really glad that they chose a beer rather than a wine for this dish. Washed down real nice. Course 7: Thai Wagyu rib with a peanut and herb chili rub. This was really bursting with flavor. The meat itself was absolutely delicious and it was richly complemented by the crust. It would have been too rich to have on its own and the 2012 special reserve Syrah really worked. I mean, like really. Course 8: We were really hungry at this point and we're glad they brought out the next dish .Tomato and fried onion crusted lamb loin. As chef Gabe likes to say he tries not to get in the way and let the flavor shine through. Deep rich gamey lamb flavor. No need to mess it up. The tomato and fried onion crust complemented it beautifully. It was on a bed of butternut filled ravioli. The ravioli of course is made in house with butternut that comes from the farm down the road. The wine pairing for this was a real treat. The special reserve Alexander Valley Cabernet 2004. I think this one is perfect right now. The tannins are relaxed yet you still have the deep rich flavor. Perfect! Course 9: As they say there is always room for dessert. Chef Gabe and Eric did not disappoint. One of the best desserts I've had here, the pumpkin pie pot de creme, made with pure maple syrup. On top was a delicious homemade marshmallow. Also a delicious cranberry and apple doughnut along with a cranberry gel. Desert always goes well with the special reserve late harvest wines. In this case a Riesling 2015.Bravo! read more

Unfortunately, sat there for 15 minutes (8:35pm) at the tasting room while 3 servers walked by me, looked at me and pretended I wasn't there and did nothing and avoided eye contact... When I caught their attention they pretended like I showed up out of nowhere, gave me ONE out of six pours at 8:50pm and said "This is your last pour, we're closed." Then the "manager" comes up to me and asks "Do you have a problem?" Quite aggressive, I might add. Never had this experience in my life, nonetheless, disrespected. I'm not going to waste anymore time reviewing because I'll let their poor customer service speak for itself. Definitely not holding anymore company dinners here. You're welcome Herzog for the honest review. Need to work on your customer service and human skills - not the way to interact with customers even if you want to close. read more

This review is strictly for the tasting room. And let me preface this review with a disclaimer: I may have been a little tipsy before we got here, since this was our second tasting room of the day. :) So, that being said... A little off the beaten path, in an industrial park in Oxnard, lies a little winery called Herzog. When you walk inside, it feels more like a museum than a winery, with Travertine floors, huge vaulted ceilings, brass fixtures and glass doors leading to the tasting room and restaurant. But don't be intimidated. These folks know where it's at. I did have a momentary flash of that scene in Sideways where they're at that horrible touristy winery with the fountain where Paul Giamatti's character flips out and dumps the wine bucket over his head, but that quickly fled as we struck up a conversation with a friendly gentleman behind the tasting bar. He asked us what we were interested in and since I looooove Pinot Noir I asked to taste the Pinot. He said they didn't have a bottle open. Well...do you think I let that stop me? Haha! He said he could find something I would like better than the Pinot Noir, so what did I do? I dared him! Yup, that's right. I dared the guy behind the counter at the Kosher Winery. In a loud voice. So what did he do? He popped the cork on the Pinot Noir. Was he right? Did I like anything better? NOPE! That Pinot Noir was AMAZING. Without any pretext, freshly opened in front of my eyes, no aerator, it was like liquid ambrosia. Nothing else even came close. So of course, I bought some. And how was it when we popped the cork at home? Just as stunning, smooth and delicious. That bottle went waaay too fast. If you're in the area, this is a must stop. Fantastic wine, great service and lots of room. You won't ever feel like you're fighting for anyones attention in here. And, if you're bold enough, you might even convince them to open something they're not supposed to! read more

I really liked the Black Muscat. A couple of gals from our party frequented this place and were VIPs so the wines were poured like they were water.We did not get kicked out for being a loud bunch. Herzog will continue to succeed at a blistering rate regardless of my review so I decided to write it anyways. The facilities are very nice and they have a Kosher restaurant on the premises which is always nice to have when wine tasting. Wine- Extremely one dimensional and some, in my opinion, was unpalatable. I did not have a favorite wine. My boyfriend and I came here yesterday with a Living Social voucher. $45 included: wine tasting for 2 (6 pours each), 2 wine glasses + 1 bottle of wine to take home, and a $50 credit towards the Tierra Sur restaurant (lunch or dinner). Such a great deal! We decided to start our day with lunch - everything was delicious! We had the Platillo Trio as an appetizer; we chose the corn fritters, chili rellenos, and black bean hummus as the three options. For our main courses, we ordered the Salmon and the Fettuccini Pasta. We didn't order any dessert, and opted for beer over wine, since we'd doing the tasting afterwards. I enjoyed my Firestone Walker Opal Dry Hopped Saison, but my boyfriend thought his Figueroa Mountain Lizards Mouth was just okay (I tasted it, it was quite bitter). We did end up spending a decent amount above the $50 credit (also, 18% gratuity was already included on the bill), but all our food items were very flavorful, so it was a nice treat. Then we went to the bar for the tastings. Initially there were no empty seats, so we were kind of standing around until we found a spare chair here and there that we pulled over to our area. Luckily we were still able to start our tasting though, in spite of not being seated. Our young female bartender was very friendly and the tasting started off well, but then halfway through, she disappeared. Unfortunately, she never introduced herself, so we couldn't inquire about her by name. There was an older woman with a short bob haircut who was coming around and asking everyone how their tasting was going, but then she didn't act upon it. For example, when we told her, we're waiting for our next tasting, she said okay, and then carried on with whatever she was doing before. Finally a third woman with long, dark hair came up to us, and when we attempted to describe our first bartender, she told us that she had gone to lunch, and that she can assist us with the 4th tasting. Then a gentleman came and offered to pour us the 5th, and finally, our original bartender came back from lunch and gave us the last pour. While all 6 pours were great, I just wish the service was a little more organized and professional - since we didn't know our bartender had gone to lunch, we were aimlessly waiting around and the overall tasting probably took twice as long as it should have - we were served by 4 different people by the end of it (which seemed silly) and there were couples who showed up after us who were finished well before we were! Also, I'm describing the three different women we interacted with in detail because, as mentioned, no one introduced themselves, so it was hard to keep track of who we could ask for our next pour - it seemed like you couldn't just ask anyone and had to wait for the same person you started with. Overall, it was a nice afternoon, but I will admit, we only came because I had bought the Living Social deal, so we probably will not be back. Not sure if it was worth the 1:15 drive (one way), but it was nice to visit a different town to change things up. read more

Be prepared to wait and wait and wait. Went on a Tuesday for wine and food an it started off good with the young girl pouring wine but after she disappeared it went downhill fast. We were the only ones at the tasting bar so she was helpful and was on top of the first two pours. Then these two older women came in and acted like we weren't even there. Just doing dishes, stocking things and talking amongst themselves. Had to raise our arms to get their attention for the last four pours. And it's cool they are trying to support local breweries, but have them in stock! I forget what I asked for but 3 times in a row the little old lady with black shoulder length hair came back and told me they didn't have it. Can you go check what you actually have in stock and tell me and then I will decide? Finally got a Lizard Mouth and when I asked for another one, that was the last one. Shocker! I'm frustrated, we've been here long enough and it takes that same little lady 25 minutes to ring up our bill. Literally 25 minutes!!! If you can't do it, get some help!!! Which she finally did and a minute later we were done. Went here only because of the living social deal, which the deal itself was good, but I won't go back. read more

I visited Herzog for their Anniversary event. The heritage behind Herzog is impressive and the opportunity to tour the facility was quite special and added to the overall experience. The tasting room and the staff were overall very pleasant. Herzog wines are truly divine! For those who have not enjoyed them, I encourage you to taste Jeunesse and the Herzog Special Reserve Alexander Valley Cabernet. Decadent appetizers and desserts were served and perfectly paired with the wine by Tierra Sur, their five-star in-house restaurant (which you must try as well). My husband and I have been coming to Herzog Wine Cellars for at least the last 8 years and we continue to be AMAZED by the excellent service at each visit. Recently, we were in the tasting room and had the pleasure for Kailei to serve us. She was AWESOME. Her knowledge of the wines was OUTSTANDING. And once she got a feel of what kinds of wines we were interested in, she would introduce us to more tastings as long as a bottle was already opened. She actually introduced us to 2 new Sparkling Wines that literally sold us over to purchasing a few to take home. She went ABOVE AND BEYOND to not only serve us what was on the wine tasting list, but introduced a few other wines based on our questions and tastes. As for Johnathan, he not only greeted us as we entered the winery, but checked on us every so often, just to make sure we were enjoying our visit. It is service like that from Kailei and Johnathan, as well as Jacob in Tierra Sur, that truly makes us keep coming back to Herzog. Keep up the GOOD WORK, Herzog!! read more

Employees were knowledgable and very accommodating. Came here with a girlfriend with a Groupon she'd purchased for a tasting, and $50 towards dinner at Tierra Sur. I'll have to say that for the area it's located in, it's kind of expensive. I was shocked when I looked to order a salad and soup and that those items alone totaled to $19. I'll give it to them that it's an incredible taste though... Besides the expensive check, the experience and atmosphere are lovely. Good for a kosher restaurant. Nice place in a nice area. The service is very good. We had the pasta with veal meatballs. I liked the pasta but the meatballs were not my taste. My boyfriend and I spent our one year anniversary in the Oxnard/Ventura area last Friday. Our first stop was at Herzog Winery for some wine tasting. We paid $10 to taste all their wines - they have a wide variety, and we enjoyed almost all of them. We used their $10 tasting fee towards a bottle of their Syrah. The staff was very friendly and generous and poured a couple extra pours since they were out of one of the wines listed. Another couple tasting told us that lunch was amazing. Apparently their lamb is to die for! We'll have to return for the food next time. After our tasting we walked upstairs for a self-guided tour of their facility. It was cool to see their process. The facility has an industrial vibe, but it's cozy inside. Overall a very nice experience. read more

Cool place in Oxnard. Wouldn't expect a winery in The Nard. They have 25 cent wine tasting flights (choose 4 from about 8 different featured wines) and if you buy a bottle, they waive the wine tasting fee. I enjoyed the moscato and ended up buying two. The pros: The inside of the winery beautiful and very well done. The wines are good for the most part and reasonably priced. The cons: Now for the downside, this is the strangest winery I have ever been to. For one thing, they are not open on Saturday. This is because of Orthodox Jewish practices. This means for religious reasons they are not open on Saturday. That is their prerogative so I don't have a problem with it, although it does make it in hard to visit. The staff seems uninterested by wine or by being at work. They also appear to know nothing about wine. The man who poured our flight basically laid the paper in front of us with the descriptions of the wines, poured the wines and left. He came back when we were done with each type and poured the next one but didn't really talk to us. The other staff pouring wine were the same way. No one had much of a personality. Every other winery I have ever been to, the person pouring the wine would describe what they are pouring and give a little background on the wine and stands there talking to you. We asked him where one of the wines was from and he said, "I don't know, somewhere in California." That was a very strange answer. Herzog might as well have a machine dispensing their wine for wine tastings. Normally wine people are very friendly. We did not get this at Herzog. read more

Quite a busy tasting room with its bar and plenty of retail items to be sold. Others were coming in for lunch in one of a couple of dining rooms that they have. While I did not find a wine to buy, I did pick up a dessert wine. What was most interesting to me me was their wine tour. I had not realized it is a Jewish winery and it has kosher areas where only certain rabbis or kosher allowed people can enter. Quite a history here! read more
