Pinot Noir wine celebrating a friend's 50th bday

I had a glass of Cabernet wine , we were celebrating a birthday. There was only 1 bartender that night. So I can understand he was doing the best he could serving everyone by himself. He did a good job keep us all happy campers. Our group pretty much filled up the vicinity. Its a small establishment, it got hot in there, I had to step outside. Thank goodness its by the beach. The have quite a selection of beers. My experience was pretty cool. Thank you for the memories.

I guess this would be a dive bar? I don't know, but it was great. Cozy place right across the street from beach. Obviously locals inside because the bartender knew people's names, but they were all inviting. 24 great beers on tap in this little place. I had heard about the pickle beer michelada and it did not disappoint. Must stop in if in area.

This little quaint spot hidden by the beach is the bees knees!! So freakin cute at first I didn't know what to expect I came in loved it! The staff and bartenders are the freakin nicest coolest peeps, they have great selection of beers almost feels like a little brewery, they had the game and ufc fight on, cool crowd cool vibes and a little hike box to play tunes, I enjoyed it!

Happy to have finally stumbled upon the Beachcomber Tavern which is under new ownership and recently remodeled. I don't venture to this side of town much but was eager to check out this local watering hole with a great beer menu and fun beachy vibes. Parking can be a little hard to come by as it's near the beach but after a little drive around the neighborhood we were able to snag a spot. It's definitely a great location being more in a residential area, I am sure the locals of these parts love having a fun little bar that they can walk to. For tourists it's perfect as it's not too far from the beach and definitely has a welcoming laid back vibe. Walking in on a Saturday late afternoon it was busy inside but with a few open barstools near the back. This definitely seems like a spot for the regulars. I needed to squeeze in near the bar to order some drinks and everyone seemed very nice letting me shuffle in. Vanessa was one of the two bartenders there and she helped me out right away. She was nice and considerate as she ensured we got what we needed. Good service from Vanessa and it was nice seeing that she had good rapport with the locals at the bar top. They have a great selection of beers here that everyone in my party was happy. I opted for the Leashless Coconutz Hazy and my friends went with their favorite Malibu Brewing Rose beer. Beers were cold and the menu definitely had a great variety. Was happy to see a lot of local breweries on tap here. Also they have plenty of cans of classic beers and seltzers to meet your needs. Prices were super reasonable! Love that good music was playing and that they have some fun bar games. The darts boards were definitely a hit and everyone was having a good time. They have security here just to note. Overall it's a cool little beachy bar that's a favorite amongst the locals, glad we finally gave this spot a try and if you find yourself this way and craving a cold beer, this is your place.

Looooved this bar! Went with family which wouldn't usually be at a bar but everyone had fun and wanted to go again. Good selection of drinks. Not sure if it's on a menu but we saw someone else order a Pickelada-- pickle beer michelada. Sooo good!

I came on Sun. afternoon, and it was super quiet and chill. I got their unique Shakerato- a shaken espresso served in a sleek martini glass. The shakerato was so good and elegantly presented. Pastries are from Cafe Ficelle. The lead barista is of the school that takes pride in crafting each drink and not letting the machine automatically do all the work. The brother sister owners bring their culinary wine and beer experience to their cafe, but they invested into learning about coffee. Sips uses Beacon roasters who actually train cafe baristas on how to produce the best shots using their beans, so it's a true coffee collaboration. The cafe vibe is bright, airy and cozy. The owner was there and we chatted for awhile- he said they are ultimately happy to be a neighborhood local cafe- they're not trying to be Starbucks and be super high volume. They want to serve the East end of Ventura, which does not have a lot of mom/pop style cafes and restaurants.

~ SMALL SPACE, BIG FLAVOR, A HIDDEN GEM ~…read more Gotetsu is one of those blink and you'll miss it spots, but once you're inside, you know you've found something sooo special!! Cozy, intimate, and very much a hole in the wall izakaya, this place is all about authentic Japanese flavors and perfectly grilled skewers. There is NO sushi here (they make that very clear), just kushiyaki, small plates, and goooood vibes. I've never been to Japan (yet), but I would imagine this is what it would be like walking into a small mom and pop shop there. The open kitchen is tiny but fun to watch, and from pretty much any seat you can see your food being made. It's a GREAT date night spot, order a bunch of dishes and share everything so much fun. We came for dinner and with a rotating menu of skewers and specials we were satisfied and it kept things interesting! Lunch is more limited, with preset options, but the quality still hits. The donburi is solid, the chicken curry is comforting (could use a little more protein), and the skewers, especially pork belly, chicken & onion, and meatballs, are seasoned and grilled really well. Veggie skewers like zucchini and brussels sprouts are simple but still tasty. At dinner, my husband and I loved the spicy garlic edamame, chicken thigh with yuzu pepper, ribeye skewer, gyoza, and the yaki onigiri (grilled rice ball with a crispy outside). Pro move: dip the onigiri into the leftover spicy edamame sauce. Trust. Ordering is easy with scan-and-pay, the owner is hands-on, and you can feel the care put into every dish. Take it easy with the ordering (they are typically skewer by skewer because you can easily rack up a hefty bill!) If you're looking for an authentic Japanese izakaya experience in Ventura, focused on flavor, not trends, Gotetsu absolutely delivers.

We expect a certain standard, a level of care that borders on obsession. So when I catch Evan Williams--respectable, questionable, but barely twelve bucks a bottle--making an appearance behind the bar, it feels like a breach of trust. A quiet betrayal under low lighting. The illusion only works if the details hold up under scrutiny... and that pour? It broke the spell. And then comes the real offense: discovering that your Old Fashioned--the crown jewel of any respectable cocktail program--are built on bottom-shelf, dust-collecting bourbon. That's not just a letdown, it's a slap in the face. A cocktail like that deserves reverence, not shortcuts. And as if to twist the knife, there it was--a massive can of red maraschino cherries sitting shamelessly atop the bar, like some relic from a dive that's given up on finesse. It wasn't just a misstep. It was disrespect. In a place claiming the speakeasy mantle, details like these matter. They're the difference between theater and parody. The cocktails did not warrant the $15 price tag. Moreover, I would have paid more had I know the class of bourbon upfront. What ultimately redeems the space is its ambiance. The low flicker of the fireplace, the soft embrace of worn leather sofas, the curated hum of music floating just above conversation--it's seductive, even soulful. The room itself is small, intimate--the kind of place where you're bound to recognize a face, or at the very least, feel inclined to invite a stranger to share the sofa and maybe a story. And then there's the setting--tucked beneath a historic relic, a basement bar built into the bones of old Americana. The building dates back to the early 1900s, echoing with a past that deserves to be honored, not phoned in. That's exactly why I expected more from the cocktails. A place with this much atmosphere shouldn't fall flat when it comes to what's in the glass. It's a mismatch--a beautiful stage, but a script that doesn't quite rise to meet it.
