I just want to start by saying I love ojai!!!! Lived here…read morefor a few years, love the energy and beauty it has, born & raised in ventura ( 15mins away). But unfortunately what a few of the staff here represent isnt ojai, the unwelcome energy and to be quite honest racist and judgemental vibes from some of the bartenders is horrendous and something im not use to at all... I am an American first, second Sicilian & Spanish which shouldn't ever matter but I have been here twice and felt the prejudice energy and attitude for no reason at all! I came here to see a friend's band and each time I went up to the bar I was purpose ignored by the bartenders...I was clearly standing in front and the bartender decode to ask w American blondes behind me what they would like to drink, I had to mention that I was standing here waiting before them, when acknowledged the bartender gave me a half a drink.... I was confused.. ( dont worry I got it fixed) I almost forgot to mention when we first got there we were also purposely ignored and a different bartender decided to help other patrons before us until we spoke up and we were served a sour puss attitude. Its just sad and disappointing to be an adult, let alone woman in this type of world and have another woman treat you this way period. Do better ojai deer lodge!!! We wont be coming back!!!

He told us about the live music and band playing that night so we decided to come back here after dinner. It was a full house with the live band. My husband and I love small local bars like this. My husband and I own and run our own small business...so it's so refreshing to see another local establishment ran by a husband and wife team. This is definitely a great bar to visit! They also have a small food selection and boy their chili really hit the spot. We look forward to coming back again the next time we visit Ojai.

Saw, the chef-owner, was raised in Burma with an Indian father and it seems as if he was blessed with an instinctive understanding of spice and flavor. His culinary journey includes 4 years at Tallula, (Mexican) in Santa Monica and today he's creating something uniquely his own in Ojai. Open-Fire BBQ with an artist's touch that makes even cornbread elevated. I promise- you'll be a fan too. The spiced compound butter with honey and flaked salt takes this dish over the top. I ordered the Smoked half chicken with lemongrass curry and rice. The meat was perfectly tender and smoked and complimented by the fabulous curry sauce. I wanted to lick the plate- it was that good. We shared the pulled pork with tamarind BBQ sauce and it too was a flavor bomb. The tamarind sauce was both Smokey, a tad spicy and just enough sweet to balance it. As sides we shared the beans and the garlic slaw. Each dish had its own garnish and flavor surprise in my mouth. Both were delicious. I can't say enough about the food other than -Do yourself a favor and eat at Joplin's. The setting is equally inviting with a charming outside patio with plenty of shade and Mountain Views. It's an ideal spot to linger over lunch. The indoor dining room is dark and dramatic with the bold rock-n-roll soundtrack playing in the background. The front of the restaurant is run by Saw's wife and you order before you're seated. They are gracious hosts and the service is good but remember- they are busy. My husband got the smash burger and loved it. I had a bite of course and it was amazing. My friend got the shredded beef tacos and again amazing ,,, the French fries were made perfectly. No bad oil taste, crispy goodness. The appetizer we ordered came with a big warm puffy bread. Soooo good. Labneh and roaster pepper dip. We enjoyed every bite and dip. The wrap was delicious, but the chicken was pretty dry. I couldn't finish the second half of my wrap because of that. The matcha was honestly more milk than matcha. I actually had to ask for a side of vanilla syrup to pour in, but ended up making it sweet than I'd like. Service was great! I loved the outdoor seating because the big tree in the middle also provided some shade. Overall, it's a nice place to have brunch! I'd probably look at different menu items though.
