We went to dinner on Saturday evening with some friends and we had a great time. The place is so inviting and the people working there are amazing. I ordered the baked Brie and it was delicious (I did share). I was told the potato skins were delicious as well. My husband ordered a hamburger that he demolished. Fabulous dinner, service, and wine pairing! I enjoyed pistachio-crusted salmon cooked to perfection, served on a bed of saffron rice with tender asparagus and a light drizzle of honey mustard. Chef Daniela paired my salmon with a crisp white wine--offered at the happy hour price--which complemented the dish beautifully. The beet salad was just as delightful. We headed over here based on the good reviews. The menu looked exciting. An important thing that matters to me at restaurants, besides the food, is the ambience. The decor was but something I would gently recommend is to put up plants or some sort of room divider wall at the entrance. When you walk in, you're basically walking right in the dining room. There is no entryway, so as a guest dining, you feel like you're in a fish bowl from all the people waiting looking around watching you eat. It's just something that I appreciate about other restaurants that have a little nice privacy entryway. We opted for the olive and nut appetizer. The nuts were sweet Which didn't really pair with the olives in my opinion. They should've been more savory or a mix of savory and sweet. We also got the pistachio salmon with the honey dijon sauce and rice. I did feel that the Dijon sauce was way too sweet for the dish. But luckily everyone I was with agreed on the small bites to try many things strategy. Thinly sliced marinated ribeye wrapped asparagus with a Korean bbq sauce - fun playful textures, perfectly cooked steak wrapped around al dente asparagus. My mom literally used her fingers to mop up every last lick of sauce! It was pretty funny. Roasted cauliflower- simple yet elegantly seasoned and cooked to perfection. Brussels sprouts are my weakness and these did not disappoint. Organic Brussels sprouts topped with cashew cilantro lime sauce, cotija cheese, pumpkin seeds & smoked paprika-- mmm this was a party in my mouth. Heartbeet Salad - spring mix, red and gold beets, pomegranate seeds, toasted pinenuts, red onion & goat cheese with a sumac vinaigrette - the combination of goat cheese and sumac vinaigrette was fresh and perky. The different textures and savory/sweet flavors really worked well together. Flatbread - fig jam, mozzarella, bacon, topped with fresh arugula. As the name suggests- the sweet of the fig jam, partnered with the savory of the bacon with the creamy mozzarella made me enjoy this more than I thought I would. The peppery tang of fresh arugula was a welcome foil to the chewy pizza crust- not quite flatbread- more a regular crust pizza - but hey, no complaints at all. For dessert - we tried the maple honey crème brûlée, the sugar was a touch burned but not unpalatable and the custard was spot on. I'm truly excited to have found this place. I don't like leaving reviews, especially for small business as I am aware the economy is brutal right now, and I don't want to hurt anyone's income but I am upset with my visit at onyx bistro. The service is dire, and I feel like even then it's putting it lightly. I was there for 2 and a half hours tonight and felt like I was there for 6 years. Having to wait over 20 minutes for a birthday ice cream (vanilla ice cream with whip cream) is absurd. Having to track down waitstaff just to get a check is insane. Being offered no refills is insane. I ordered a bistro burger tonight, and it came out to what I would consider raw. I was surprised it was not cold when I touched it. Being told, "sorry we had to keep it on the grill longer because we weren't sure if it was raw or not" is not a super inspiring thing to hear when eating meat. I contemplated sending it back, but weighed it out in my head and thought that the 45 minutes needed to cook a single hamburger would leave me more frustrated, and I just said screw it. I left it untouched until, It eventually was taken back, despite me saying it was fine, and it came back, very undercooked again. Being told, "next time speak up we can fix it" is insane. You're not around at all, and after almost 2 hours I have zero desire to track you down to fix my food knowing after the last 2 hours I could be there for another 45 minutes. Maybe this was an off night, and I hope it gets better but I genuinely cannot think of a worse first experience somewhere. I sat on the outside patio and the whole experience was relaxing. They have a pretty nice selection of beer and wine here, but of course the food was the star of the show. Some of the things that were sampled were the flying pig flatbread which had a really great salty and sweet flavor to it. The caprese flatbread which tasted great as well. I tried these caprese skewers that were very refreshing and you could tell the ingredients were really high quality. Hummus with pita was really fresh and had a great deep, hummus flavor.
