We went to the R&B, Rock night, the live music was good. The Spicy Hula Hawaiian pizza was really tasty. The Pinot Noir Wine was so delicious, it wasn't so grapple, the body of the wine was rich and delicious. The service was really great, I loved how quick we got our snacks. Prior to Covid, I wrote a column called "Heard It Through the Grapevine" covering all 16 wineries in Ventura County. Cantara Cellars was one of my favorites, but I'd moved several times and hadn't been back. We recently moved to Camarillo and I was in need of some wine to celebrate. Was looking forward to a wine tasting experience since I knew they had great wine and nice ambiance. Have things changed!! I walked in and there the place was totally empty. On a Saturday! One guy was sitting at a table watching TV, but there wasn't anyone at all in the tasting room. I walked around for a few minutes until I found Chris in the back unloading some boxes. I asked her if the tasting room was open, and she seemed very annoyed that I bothered her. I'd given her place some really great coverage when I had the column, but she didn't even remember me. The entire time I was there, I felt as if I was an inconvenience. She never once talked about the wines, only the PRICE for the tasting, which was $24... and no discount if I wanted to join the wine club. When I asked her if she still held events, she replied "Yes." That was it... not what they were, or when. I never felt so unwanted at a place of business - maybe she was just having a bad day, but with so many OTHER really nice winery owners in Camarillo and Oxnard, I will definitely NOT be going back to Cantara EVER again. read more

Just recently had my wedding here. I was appreciative this venue was the only venue opened after my prior venue cancelled 2.5 months prior to my wedding. Now I had the pleasure to talk to Chris the owner. Nice over the phone but in person too many requisites. All my vendors had a tuff time they commented they never ever delt with such difficulty of personality. If you do have your venue here please be ready for feedback on what they prefer. It became more stressful than what it should have been. No kids requested. Chris gave her opinions when they were not asked for. She wanted us to use her vendors only. At this point it felt like she wanted to plan my wedding and at some point caused me so much anxiety I had regretted my decision. $2500 (non refundable) Now! if you do have your venue here her preference was not to exceed 120ppl and use only vendors with ventura county health permits. La permits or other counties won't count for her eventhough I confirmed with the county based on private events. So save yourself the headaches. Lastly eventhough chris was accomodating in other areas I wish my experience at first was great but it's hard to say when certain comments were made. Some people just don't have the customer service or either racism hard to tell. My wedding guests all commented how chris couldn't handle the bar, she made rude comments or cut people off at 3 drinks and she closed the bar and beyond rude to all our guests. This has NEVER happened to me with any venue I have ever been to. Sadly they are NOT prepared for large events AT ALL. Maybe the type of guests we had? hard to tell why she was like this. They defenitely loved the location but hated the service unfortunately coming from over 18'guests you know that's an issue. Day of my wedding I continued getting messages knowingly we confirmed all within the week. I would say this venue isn't prepared for weddings. Has a lot of potential and I hate to put a business down but some people belong in the back doing paperwork and others such as chris's husband he was behond welcoming and so kind. If he took care of this side of their business I can see it thriving much much more but I would'nt do a wedding or event here again. Unfortunately! I was really looking forward to seeing a better side of the business reason why i held back on writing a review. 2 starts because my son enjyed their pizza, the venue is beautiful with potential and chris's hubsand has top tier customer service. read more

Do you enjoy wine? Do you like beer? How about good food? Camarillo Barrel Works has all those with plenty of seating to offer. This gem in Camarillo is tucked away in an unassuming business park and the photos of the inside don't do it justice. We decided to drop by for a wine tasting and found out that both Cantara Cellers and Flat Fish Brewing live here. I've passed by Cantara Cellars many times and finally stopped in for a tasting. They really have everything for everyone: wine, beer, cocktails, food, and live performances on some nights. They have indoor and outdoor seating and can even host tastings in their barrel room on a really busy day. I chose the wine flight which was 3oz of any 3 wines for $24. There were 11 wines to choose from and I picked the 2022 Pinot Grigio, 2018 Rose, and 2021 Pinot Noir. They also had a fairly big menu of "shareables" (artisan flatbread, wings, charcuterie platter, etc), bbq (tri-tip or pulled pork) and even dessert (brownies and cookies). You could even get tri-tip or pulled pork topped tots which I did! It was a lot of food which was good for me since I hadn't yet had lunch and I later got a brownie to take home - also delish. As for the wines, I liked that I was able to design my own flight and Chris (who was pouring for me) gave me some suggestions. I was a big fan of the rose and took a bottle of that home. I also tried their Moscato, suggested by Michelle who also helped me that day, and it was very refreshing and not overly sweet, which a lot of moscatos can be. I'd like to go back and try some of their other wines, and the beer and cocktails, when I get the chance. As for parking, there's a small lot (it's ok to park where the "reserved for barrel works" signs are) and there's street parking. On the day I was there it wasn't very busy so I had an easy time finding a place to park but on nights when they have live music, it could probably be hard to find a parking spot. Owned and operated by a family whose grapes come from the central CA area (maybe out by Paso Robles, I'm a horrible student and wasn't paying clear attention to the presentation). They do their own wine making and with a modest production, you can find their award wining varietals in their home town of Camarillo. You can find discounts for the wine tasting on Groupon. With the wine tasting you are offered a nice charcuterie which paired nice with the wine offerings. You also have the opportunity to join their wine club. My journey and visit to Cantara was special because we had a visit from Santa. We had photo ops with Santa and the local canine came in dressed to the nines to get a pic with Santa. Back to the wine= nice, clean, flavorful. Moderately priced and best of all, served by a great family; husband, wife and son. I purchased a nice red blend that went well with my New Year's dinner. We went here a couple weeks ago to see Katie Shorey perform. I was very impressed with how everything was handled during the pandemic . It was outdoors under a umbrella... There was approximately 42 seats, & the tables were placed 6-8' apart. The outdoor 'stage' was far enough away for everyone to feel safe but close enough to still have a good experience.. Chris, the manager, did a wonderful job of sitting this up. It's nice to be able to go out & still feel safe.. My fiancé really loved the blond ale while I was drinking a red blend.. Never made it passed a phone call. Saw a flyer that a band is going to be playing there and it says to make reservations. So we called to see how that works and the person that answered the phone rudely said they don't care if we sit or stand to watch the band. Never had heard of this place until a friend was going to be singing with their band here. Before coming we did call and made reservations for seating. Parking was tricky for a truck but we still found a place. Inside there is a nice sitting area that is away from the stage and is great if you want to have a conversation. There is food as well as wine and beer. I was super excited to see gluten-free pizza, I normally am always concerned about how it's going to taste but it was the best pizza that I have had in a long time. * There is no hard liquor in this establishment. There is a large area that can seat a lot of people we were able to find our name with a reserved sign on it. The room is big and the band music is good and not too loud. There was a great place to dance and the different lights and the disco ball were a great add-on. The building was clean and well-kept. The staff was great and welcoming to all that came in. Because they serve food and no hard liquor kids are welcome to come as well. Cantara is a great winery that makes great wines! The owners and workers here are all very nice and friendly, and the pours are generous. I've always had great experiences here and have never left disappointed. Parking is free, easy, and abundant. I highly recommend their Malbec and their Mischievous wines, but really they all taste pretty damn good. I've never tasted a wine here that I didn't enjoy. The place is small and tucked in between some buildings and on a small street but it was a decent stop. We were looking for new place to try some wine. We stumbled upon Cantara Cellars and found it had wine, beer, and food so why not give a shot. Turns out all three were great. My wife enjoyed all three of the tastings she tried which is very rare for her. Actually bought two bottles of one. I also got to enjoy two East Coast IPA's, which being originally from NY, I had not tasted in many years. Both were excellent. Then to find out they often had live music on the weekends seems to have cemented that this may be a regular stop for us. The staff was nothing short of amazing, informative, and attentive. SO MUCH FUN!!! Honestly .... people need to know about this place. First time I heard about it was when John Mayall [blues guitarist] was playing a concert there in 2021 [wait what-?! YES in Camarillo]. Turns out Cantara / Flat Fish brewery has regularly scheduled, fantastic concerts. Mostly blues, which is great music for relaxing with a beer or a glass of wine, which they make right there, in casks and tanks you're sitting next to and add atmosphere to their production warehouse / concept space. I especially enjoyed their Chardonnay; it's nice and clean and light because they don't use oak barrels for that varietal. What a delight to be immersed in great music, in a casual setting, enjoying excellent wine. I left feeling happy and relaxed and inspired from being in the midst of talented people doing what they do best. I dropped in on a whim, and it totally made my week. Good food too!! read more

Thanks to an outstanding Living Social offer (www.livingsocial.com), a coworker, her husband, her sister, and I were able to try several wineries in the Ventura County area - among them, Cantara Cellars. The Living Social deal was a voucher for a "One Harvest Wine Passport" offered by the Ventura County Wineries Association and valid at eight wineries ($80.00 value for $40.00). Cantara Cellars was the home cellar where we redeemed our offer and the merriment of libations began. The finish was much smoother than others I've tried. 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon: (ranked #6) The licorice was extremely powerful on my palate and simply ruined this one for me. I'm not a fan of licorice and every taste bud reacted to its presence. 2010 Merlot: (ranked #1) This was subtle on my palate yet had a clean full-body finish. The nose made me salivate like Pavlov's dog and wished I had some meat to eat. 2010 Intrepid: (ranked #2) I wanted to kick my feet up, light a pipe and chill with this one. This had some teeth to it and I think I'm still tasting the finish! Service - We arrived and promptly produced our Living Social printouts to one of the proprietors, Chris Brown, who then gave us our passport and the lowdown of what to expect and set us up for our tasting at her establishment. She was very friendly and helpful and really everything went smoothly. She was also a big help to guide us to our next winery of choice. All was good here. Parking - There was plenty of free parking on their private lot. "Nuff said. Atmosphere, décor, ambience - The business was located in an industrial area so no actual vineyard here - simply a tasting facility with decent standing room (it got kind of crammed after ten patrons). There was plenty of souvenirs to purchase found on your right, and a separate seating area with couches, tables and chairs to your left, I guess if you chose to enjoy a glass or bottle at your leisure. The tasting menu and prices were posted on the wall directly across once you entered, plus, there was a handful of other informational and promotional literature to add to your wine experience. I still can't get used to the whole urban winery located in industrial areas as the whole romanticism of a vineyard view was reserved for those more conducive areas such as Napa, Santa Barbara, Sonoma, and Temecula - just to name a few in California. But as long as they produced a good product I guess it didn't matter, right? It's not like Ventura County lacks farmland, so I'm just saying.... I found very good value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (total experience was around $5.00 based on Living Social deal while tastings normally were $10.00; no tip required). I enjoyed that there were six tastings (I believed the norm was five). However, I wished there were complimentary crackers (cheese/meat plates were available for $15.00) to aid with the tasting. I'm just in town overnight for business and every website I searched looking for great wine in the area listed Cantara Cellars. Since I love wine, but know nothing about it outside whether I like the taste or not (don't judge me), I asked for help selecting my flight and immediately had all the help I needed and I've been a happy camper since.
