Herman's Bakery did the cake for my wedding this past July, at the suggestion of my parents who grew up in the area, and I could not possibly be any more thrilled with the fantastic work they did! My cake was absolutely gorgeous, and just as delicious. Herman's was soo easy to work with and one of my favorite vendors for my wedding. I literally came in with a picture of a cake I liked from Pinterest for inspiration, and Herman's recreated it beautifully! They were so easy to work with, all I did was give them a picture and they took it from there. No fuss no muss, no annoying questions, always responsive, just wonderful. And they were very price-conscious and made realistic suggestions to help us save money (the cost was also incredibly reasonable). I would highly, HIGHLY recommend Herman's for your wedding cake, or a cake for another occasion, or just some sweet treats (of course I did some extra snacking the times I was there). I have purchased many cakes from Hermans in the past that I've been pleased with but things seem to be going down hill for this business. The people who work here were rude and seem like they did not want to be there at all and left us waiting more than they helped. I came in with my mom and maid of honor to order my wedding cake and I should have left when it took longer than 30 mins just to get someone over to talk to us with only 4 other customers in store. And still the girl who came to help kept leaving and would be gone for 10 mins at a time. I showed them a picture of a cake I found online and they made it seem like it would be no trouble at all. I called in the week before the wedding to make sure they had all my drop off information, and they still had to call me the day before the wedding for all the info again (they somehow didnt have it). And come actual wedding day when I saw the cake I was disgusted... they painted it a barf green color that was not appealing at all and it was obvious whoever did the design on the cake did not have the skill required for what I was asking. The only positive I have to say is that the cake tasted alright. My wife called a week in advance to make our daughter's birthday cake and pickup the day of. They took our card over the phone for the deposit... Normal procedure so far right? Now we live about 30 miles away from this bakery, so we called 30 minutes ahead of the scheduled pickup to confirm it was ready. They told us yes it will be ready for pickup. We get there and to our amazement they didn't even start the cake, at all. They claim they didn't have a deposit but we gave them our card and if there was an issue they had 2 phone numbers and an email they could reach us at to let us know. Why did they say it would be ready when we called 30 minutes before arriving? They could have saved us the trip. We wasted time, gas, tolls getting there just to be told there's no cake. They said they would have the cake ready in an hour but how is that possible when the cake we ordered will take more time that that. They look at the order again and then claim they can't give us a time but it will be ready today. Invitations were an hour from that point of time and no cake. We canceled the order completely because we didn't want to pay for an expensive cake just for it to be rushed and half-assed. We went to get a grocery store cake instead. Avoid this bakery if you want to make sure you have a cake for your event. read more

All my life I have eaten Strawberry Shortcakes from this bakery. My Grandmother would only buy her Strawberry Shortcake from Herman's, until the day she died. The whole family only goes here for that cake. This year my mother is celebrating her 79th birthday. Her sister and brother-in-law, who live in North Carolina, ordered a Strawberry shortcake for her by phone. This place was amazing. I'm referring to when I was a child. But. Over the past decade I've noticed that the treats just aren't the best. They're not as fresh and delicious as once was, it seems like most bakeries are making things out of packaging mixes. I don't mean store bought packages but I believe that they use packaged cake mixes and frostings to have consistent products. But. Where's the gun it that. If you don't bake at home then by all means you may love it, but if you're expecting something homemade or deliciously imperfect than try somewhere else. I've noticed this at many bakeries but there are a very small few that still makes truly amazing baked goods. Shame this place use to be amazing and the prices are still high. For example I bought a strawberry short cake and it was expensive. The whipped cream was not fresh or did it have any flavor. I scooped off all the whipping cream and put my own on it. I remember this place from my childhood visits to see my grandma in Baltimore. Once upon a time, there was a Harry's Bakery on Fleet Street which was a part of Herman's. I heard through the grapevine on a recent visit to Baltimore that Herman's still served up the marshmallow donuts at their old Holabird location. Sure enough, true! Took the drive, grabbed a dozen along with some strawberry shortcake and was not disappointed. THe place is showing it's age, but this only added to the charm. The donuts were soft, with just the right amount of marshmallow. Great packaging and friendly service. I randomly found myself in the area and was really excited to see this quirky, old school building and sign for a local bakery! Instantly I was imagining walking in to a warm little bakery packed full of freshly baked goodies, the smell of even more goodies baking in the oven, and being greeted and served by someone adorable little grandmother. So, I hopped out of my car blissfully without checking Yelp. *Womp womp* The placed seemed only half lit with the entire back, right corner being dark. I thought for a half second that maybe they weren't open just yet, but realized the ridiculousness of it with it being 10am and their need to have been open for hours get all those freshly baked goods out for the day. So much for a warm welcome from Grandma (or baking aroma), in fact, I was able to look around for a minute or two before being greeted by a young girl, who I should say was very nice. The cases seemed somewhat empty, and not in a ransacked as soon as they opened kind of way, but more like a day old, leftover Peanut Butter Cupcake here and a couple of remaining Chocolate ones there. Since the donuts looked fresh, I opted for a chocolate topped one and a medium cup of coffee for a grand total of $2.26. Don't even waste your time with the coffee - it was basically unknown, flavorless brand in a couple of carafes on a table with heavy cream as your only creamer option. Bleh. The donut was pretty substantial in size and they certainly didn't skimp on the chocolate icing, but I was over it after a couple of bites. Perhaps I picked the wrong items, from the reviews it sounds like I should have opted for cake, but I think I'll stick with other hometown go-to's like Fenwick, where you really will be greeted by someone's grandmother, the wafting smell of freshly baked goods, and utterly delicious everything you may get your hands on. read more

My mother called me last minute and asked if I could go to this bakery for her own birthday cake because she was craving a pound cake with buttercream icing. I had never been here before but went in and the customer service was EXCELLENT. They had a selection of decorated pound cakes for sale there but I didn't love any of the designs so they offered to ice and design one for me while I waited. They decorate the cakes in the middle of the bakery so I was able to watch the daughter of the bakery owners design the cake. I gave her no sort of direction just told her my mom likes blue and she made this absolutely gorgeous cake in a matter of twenty minutes. The price was extremely reasonable and I was blown away by the individual attention and customer service I received here. My mom was so happy and surprised that I was able to come in the same day and get a cake made especially for her. It tasted good as well. I will definitely be back to this bakery! Against my better judgement I opted for the 1/4 slice knowing good well I should've just got a small cake. The boyfriend got two black bottom cupcakes and he was not pleased. He said they were dense and dry. BUT ON TO MY CAKE!!! I have ordered from Hermans for numerous events, as I have an event planning business and also work at a school as an event coordinator who handles booking of vendors. I catered a sheet cake for my OWN baby shower and one of my guests bit into A SCREW. At first, Hermans' staff had me bring in the screw and promised a partial refund. It has now been 3 weeks and I still haven't gotten any refund. Every time I call, I get the run around and promises of call backs that never happen. I recently gave birth so I am unable to go back to their establishment AGAIN. One of their own workers who I spoke to over the phone said she sees how they're handling it and it is not right and if I don't come in, they probably won't refund me. I have experienced poor customer service and will never be using them again. God forbid a child had that piece of cake with the screw in it instead of an adult. Over $100 spent on a single cake is down the drain, but that's okay with me because they will now be missing out on hundreds from my future event orders. Unacceptable! read more

I was quickly and pleasantly greeted by Cass who was a true gem to speak with. She brought us refreshments before our cakes for tasting and guided us through sample cake images as well as went over valuable information about their services and other helpful wedding day and cake tips. Based on her service alone I'd give 10 stars. The cake was tasty, especially their pound and yellow cakes as well as their raspberry filling and the pricing was reasonable. They always have so many delicious looking things, it's hard to make a choice. While everything looks great, it probably also looked great when it was baked 3 days ago. The marshmallow donuts are very good, and if you don't go early in the morning, they are usually sold out...but if you ask, they'll make one for you. I also love that they have rainbow cake! My experience with Herman's can be described only one way, with a "shrug." I've ordered from them twice. The first time we ordered a cupcake-cake, the second time we ordered for a baby shower. The cupcake-cake was just okay, the kids were scooping the icing off by the pound (far too much for a little cupcake). The baby shower cake looked great but tasted disgusting. The cake, and the icing, were far too sweet. A lot of people kept getting up asking for drinks to wash the sugar down. Disappointing for the cost. Hey, it could've been worse. I ordered a Retirement whole sheet cake for a co-worker and they spelled our Company name wrong. I spent approx. 40 minutes the Friday before ordering this cake I prepaid for it and had another co-worker pick it up. Upon discovering the mispelled word I called and was told by the manager that they showed the cake to whoever picked it up and blamed it on us. I told her this person was not told they had to approve the writing on the cake. Long story short I WILL NEVER ORDER FROM THEM AGAIN!
