I'd been dying to go to Heritage for a while now because I've heard nothing but wonderful things about it. Fiancé and little one (GASP!) decide to take me to a surprise "fancy dinner" on my birthday (a Wednesday), and Heritage was the spot!
Despite my fiancé being told by whoever he spoke to when making arrangements that we should NOT bring a child, he decided that our child is not like "most" children (whatever that means!) and that we're doing family dinner, damn it all. We have exposed her to plenty of fine dining situations, so I wasn't concerned, but we did get a wary look from the other diners when we arrived. None of this would matter ordinarily, BUT I want to point out that despite being advised not to bring the little one (she's 6), they were SO incredibly accommodating. Our server was impeccable and provided a tattered box of colored pencils (way cooler than crayons) and a blank sheet of paper... he "let" her order a Shirley Temple and "Cheesy Pasta" (this was all pre-arranged), and treated her just like a normal adult. Thanks for being cool about us bringing our kid! On top of that, they didn't dumb down the "cheesy pasta". It was homemade noodles with a rich cheese sauce... and she ate every bite... She really felt grown up, and Heritage did a lot to help make the experience perfect for our family.
Ok. To the meal.
I loved the beer selection, but it was my birthday, after all, so I started with a cocktail: The Return of the Macintosh. Housemade apple vodka, caramel, and allspice. It was AMAZING. My only complaint here is the teeny, tiny glass they serve it in. It's basically a shooter, but I sipped slowly to savor this amazing drink. It wasn't too heavy, but definitely had all the elements to warm you up. After that, I moved on to another cocktail called Karma (insert random number here)... I forgot the number part. It was citrusy and refreshing, and paired well with the many plates we ordered.
To begin we ordered the chicken liver pate. It's a mousse style pate, and it was pretty good. I honestly felt it wasn't that remarkable, but it wasn't bad either, just average.
Our next dish was the soft-poached egg with duck confit, mushrooms, grits, etc. Our first egg was hard-poached, so it was a bit anti-climatic when we broke it open to let the rich yolk run throughout the dish, but the server was really kind about replacing it, and once we got it right, it was one of my favorite two dishes of the night. The broth is sweet, spicy, and a touch sour, the duck is tender and flavorful. The grits are light and buttery, and when the egg is poached perfectly, the yolk adds that layer of rich deliciousness. Five stars for this dish!
We also tried the special which was burrata (fresh, creamy mozzarella), encapsulated inside of more fresh mozzarella, garnished with fried green tomatoes, pickled beans, and basil oil. So... it's basically mozzarella stuffed mozzarella. When you break open the ball of mozzarella, more delicious, creamy fresh mozzarella comes oozing out of the center. It seemed like it was going to be incredibly rich and heavy, but it was surprisingly light and refreshing even. This dish was also 5 stars for me.
We ordered the pork belly because the server raved about it, and everyone said: "You gotta do pork, they do pork so well". It really must have been an off night, because the pork belly we got was hard, dry, incredibly salty.. the sauce was good, but overpowering. I've had quite a bit of pork belly and even make it at home now and then, and this was actually the worst I've had. After everything I've heard about this place, I've got to chalk this up to just a bad one-off, because so many people have told me (and I've read), that the pork belly is delicious!
The grand finale: Dessert. We ordered the dark chocolate and Nutella candy bar with candied corn pops, some kind of pecan shaving/thing, and toasted meringue with Nutella ice cream. After I took the first bite, I wanted to go home and finish this alone. I almost considered asking for one to go, it was THAT good. The candy bar is smooth and delicious, the pecan element is surprising and the candied corn pops are fun and add that bit of crunch. And obviously I need not say anything more about Nutella ice cream.
Overall, the service was impeccable, the plates are incredibly beautiful, the cocktails are tasty, and the food is impressive. I'm thinking the bad experience we had with a couple dishes was inconsistent with their norm, and we will be back to have another go at the pork belly at least.... and I've heard they really throw down a great brunch.
I give them four stars for tasty, surprising food, a nice atmosphere, impeccable service and delicious cocktails. Without the mishaps, I would have given them a 5! read more
