My wife and I had Sunday brunch here at 11:30am. Full house, but with our reservation no wait to sit at a table. Server was on the move constantly, but made sure to check in with us on a regular basis. We had the fish and grits and big hot mess. Both were excellent! Oh, Heritage. You far exceeded my expectations. Let's be fair, though, I didn't know what to expect at all! The first thing that struck me was that it was a much more upscale atmosphere than I was expecting. The decor is clean, and sleek, but not cold. I loved how warm and inviting it was. I immediately thought that it was a good chance that Heritage could become one of my faves. And it did! The menu is perfectly curated, dishes perfectly crafted. The drink menu was innovative and there were options on it that would tickle anyone's fancy. For an appetizer, I went with a mixed greens salad. When the salad came, it was almost too pretty to eat. But, as I was starving, I took a second to admire it and then dug in. It was so simple, but perfectly dressed and the leaves were crisp and fresh. I loved that salad! Didn't want it to end. Next, I ordered the flounder dish. The flounder was lightly fried and served on a bed of the most amazing coconut curry with veggies. This dish was unlike anything else I've ever had in Richmond. I loved the curry so much that I asked for bread to soak it up when I was done. I felt so light after eating it. No food babies or food comas over here! Because they change their menu so often, I'm going to plan to go back asap so that I can have that dish again before it's gone. To top it all off, for dessert I ordered homemade PSL ice cream. Heritage is a perfect date night spot! The ambience is great and the food is fantastic!

Supper Club!!! Okay, I got the promotional stuff out of the way, but this was a great dinner at Heritage, whether I was with fellow Yelpers or not! I've been to Heritage once before but it was a couple of years ago and, frankly, not as memorable as this night in September. When I arrived, the group was just ordering drinks (perfect timing!) so I ordered a whiskey sour. I expected a mix but was in the mood for a WS anyway. I was pleasantly surprised to taste a housemade cocktail, which shouldn't surprise me considering the variety of concoctions on the specialty drinks menu. For my dinner, I ordered the flounder and really enjoyed it. The fish was well-cooked atop a mix of local potatoes, eggplant, squash, and broccoli, and laying in a lake of an incredible coconut-curry sauce that could have been served in a bowl as 'the best soup you've ever tasted!' The various flavors were obvious but complementary. Our server even found a plate of warmed, buttered bread to let us sop it up from the bottom of the bowl. I thoroughly enjoyed my dinner! Once dinner was finished, these dessert menus just appeared so, of course, we had to oblige and order something. I chose the sweet corn panna cotta with a cup of coffee. I'd never tasted this before but really enjoyed it. The corn was oh-so-subtle but definitely there, and the panna cotta was smooth and creamy as you would like it to be, topped with a coulis of some berries. It worked nicely with the bold coffee. Going around the table, it seems that everyone loved their dinner, which is as good as it gets for a friendly dinner. --Brunch Review-- So I said I'd have to check this place up for brunch and now I have. Definitely a good option to go to if you don't want to deal with the crowds at Millie's, etc. The Food. -Chicken & Waffles- I don't think I have ever tried this before as famous as the combination is. I've got to say, I'm loving it! The chicken is not fried like your expected KFC way. It's lighter which is good since it doesn't make me feel like a fatty, but not as crunchy. I went with a friend for sunday brunch. The atmosphere was nice, very modern with contemporary colors. It was busy but we were seated right away. I got the Salmon Benny which I thought was okay, not as flavorful as I would like. My friend got the pulled bqq and it was delicious! It was called the "hot big mess", which makes sense because it was a scramble of the pulled bbq pork, cheese, etc. The price is a little bit more expensive considering you can go to other places around the area for a little cheaper but the portion size definitely makes up for it. Went here for brunch yesterday (Sunday) with a couple of friends. Following the advice of other Yelp reviews I made a reservation. I'm glad I did, the place was completely packed! However, this didn't detract from my meal in any way since it wasn't too loud. Service was overall good. My only thing was the server would like take our order or something & rush off. However, like I said it was busy. I just wish he'd waited .5 seconds before leaving because I'd begin to ask something & her walk off. I got the big hot mess, a side of pancakes & a mimosa. The mimosa was underwhelming to say the least. It was more oj than champagne. For $7 there are plenty of other bars in Richmond where I'd get a better mix drink. The big hot mess was pretty good. The reviews here might have overhyped it for me though. It was good but not change my life good. When I heated up my leftovers for dinner it tasted just as good as it had that morning which is very impressive. The pancakes were A+. Totally fluffy & full of flavor. The fact that this place uses real maple syrup is a definite plus too. Overall a decent place for brunch, someplace you could bring friends or family from out of town & not worry if the food is decent or not. This place only gets 4/5 stars because I can't give 4.5/5. The rockfish was on point as well. For dessert I had a Death Star nog. As a self proclaimed nerd I had no choice with that name. But honestly I was surprised with just how good that drink was. Another great eat in Richmond! Heritage has opened its door in a socially distanced capacity (we made reservations), which was a wonderful surprise for us noting we'd be in town this weekend! We started our meal with the pimiento croquettes (to die for and easily shareable between 2 people). The spicy mayo that came with the croquettes was amazing. I then had the the housemade gemelli pasta, which also had a very complex and wonderful taste to it. I will say the portion was huge and could have easily been shared. My fiancé had the grass fed burger, which he really enjoyed (and ended up dipping his fries in the appetizer mayo sauce since it was soooo good). We finished the meal by sharing the candy bar dessert, a rich fudge like chocolate bar plated with caramel drizzle and marshmallow flush. While everything thing was wonderful, we'd likely look at trying two appetizers and sharing an entree and a dessert if we came back. Great spot! read more

My girlfriend and I asked our friends on Facebook where we should eat after we missed the last showing of The Art of the Flower at the VMFA and decided to stay over and the only restaurant anyone recommended was Heritage. We called on a Saturday night and they were booked. I called back and asked about bar seating. "Maybe, there might be a couple opening up." We took out chances. When we arrived, there were six seats open at the bar. It only got better from there. I started with a vodka 50/50 Martini and Pimento Croquettes -- delicious. Then, we saw a table snacking on a bowl of shrimp crackers sprinkled with kim chi spice -- a mandatory purchase, though you wouldn't think so. We then had the beet salad and some other salad (I can't find it on the menu). My girlfriend doesn't eat meat so we kept vegetarian. We ordered the mushroom garganelli pasta with spinach, a poached egg, and spring squash and the house made rigatoni pasta with buratta cheese -- we thought the mushroom pasta more than anything we've ever eaten. We finished with both the "candybar" and strawberry and rhubarb dessert. We finished the night with Underberg bitters with a Pilsner back. The night was perfect and I felt like I had a true chef's table experience even though we merely dropped in from the street. According to my globe-trotting foodie girlfriend who is in the events planning business, it's the best meal she has ever had, bar none. Heard so many great things about this place, I just had to check it out for myself. Made a reservation on Yelp which came in handy because the place was popping during 12pm. The service was relatively quick and the customer service was great. The manager was the one who was seating people and setting up the tables, she was very sweet and accommodating. We were seated within minutes, most likely because of our reservation. The inside of the restaurant is cute and cozy. Feels like you're in someone's house. The place seems kind of small but it surprisingly fits a lot of people. We were greeted immediately by our server. She was friendly and helpful, I had asked her if she thought the "Big Hot Mess" or the "duck hash" was better. She suggested the "duck hash" and I loved it! Duck hash ($12): basically potatoes, duck pieces, with fried eggs and hollandaise on top. - the duck was extremely moist and so delicious - the eggs were perfectly made - the hollandaise was superb; good citrus flavor - the only thing I didn't like much were the amount of potatoes; I thought there were just big pieces and I didn't finish em. Nutella French toast ($10): - so sweet and delicious - the French toast itself was moist but still had a crunch to it. - the batter was not overly sweet because that would be too much along with the Nutella Cons: - mimosa was kinda pricey ($7) - there's a wait if you didn't make a reservation - gets pretty crowded Overall, I had a great time. I've been here a few times now on visits to Richmond. My favorite dish here is the mushroom pasta I had my first time, but I have never had anything here that I didn't like. The pimiento croquettes are stuffed full with cheese, and the tomato aioli was better than I expected it to be. The clamshell pasta far exceeded my expectations, and my husband liked it better than he did his steak (we both loved the aligot). The food is also reasonably priced for the quality, and it came out from the kitchen fast and was nice and hot. Heritage 4/5 Food: (5/5) We started off with the fried broccoli, which was absolutely the best broccoli I think I've ever had. We also had the smoked fish dip which had so much flavor it honestly had me getting Top Chef feelings. I had the rockfish which was decently sized, I was just craving a little bit more and the veggies complemented it perfectly. The rockfish normally came with a bacon vinaigrette, but I let the waitress know that I am a pescatarian and they were able to take that off which was very accommodating. My girlfriend had the mussels and French fries and she was very happy. The mussels were plentiful and flavorful, and surprisingly, French fries are a great pairing. We also had the Figured As Much and Crystal Lake Fizz as drinks. The crystal lake was slightly over sweet but the real winner was the figured as much. The figured as much was a green tea vodka that you could drink all night, absolutely amazing. Service: (4/5) The service was great, our hostess was very kind and welcoming. We had a table waiting since we had a reservation which may or may not have been needed since it was a weekday. I was in town from Los Angeles visiting family and it was my 30th birthday. Not going to lie, I was a little trepidatious that my night in Virginia would be disappointing, considering I live in one of the best towns for restaurants in the world. After some Yelp snooping, Heritage seemed like THE place to eat. And it turns out- it was perfect! The food was definitely on-par with anything in LA. I got to try multiple dishes are the table since there were 8 of us, and everything was just excellent. Personally, I split the scallops and bolognese with my hubby and while both were great- I am still thinking about those scallops a few days later. The flavors with the kimchi rice and broccoli was just perfect. Also at the table, we had the Rockfish, pasta with shrimp, and kobe burger. Nothing disappointed. As far as starters, the pimento balls and fried broccoli were so flavorful and a wonderful start to the night. Service was GREAT. Not too pushy, but always there when we needed something. I met a friend who i had hadn't seen in twenty years for dinner at Heritage. I arrived early and was able to have a happy hour cocktail at the bar ($2 off speciality drinks). I had a vodka drink with a strawberry purée which was delicious. My friend and I sat at a table once she arrived. We both ordered drinks--she had a spicy signature cocktail and I an old fashioned. Loved them both. Our server rightly observed that we were in no hurry and didn't rush us. We took about 40 minutes to enjoy our drinks and catch up before we ordered (it wasn't busy so we weren't overstaying our welcome). We ordered the fried broccoli and the chicken liver pate to start, followed by the golden tile fish and duck breast for dinner. The broccoli was perfectly crisp, tender and well seasoned with a garlic aioli. The pate, served with crostini, was rich, smooth and decadent with a hint of acidity supplied by a pickled chutney garnish. The tile fish was golden brown and lightly crisp served over potatoes, eggplant and mushrooms in a mildly spicy curry sauce. Delicious! The duck was cooked to a perfect medium rare with vegetables and a garlicky mustard sauce. Wonderful. I had a nice Zinfandel blend with dinner. We shared the sweet corn panna cotta for dessert which was nice but not a stand out. We spent three hours at heritage and enjoyed every minute of it. I have heard nothing but phenomenal things about Heritage from every Richmond local and passerby. I came here with two friends recently, and we were excited to try it out and hopefully add to those positive feelings! We got there and were greeted after a few minutes of standing in the lobby area. It was a little tight, as many parties were waiting to be seated right when we arrived. However, we were taken to a nice table near the windows which provided some nice sunlight. We admired other tables that were full of food and drinks and quickly ordered the smoked fish dip as it was highly recommended. For the three of us, it was a healthy portion, so much so, that we couldn't muster the courage to finish it before our entrees came out. It was okay, but I probably wouldn't order it again given the flavor (which was smoky and fishy). Among the three of us, we had a fish special, vegetarian pasta, and another fish entree. My fish entree was fine, nothing amazing, but well-cooked and a good mixing of flavors. I had some leftover which held up well until lunch the next day. I also had the cosmic dancer cocktail which is made of belle isle blood orange, blackstrap rum, honey, lemon, greek yogurt, and poppyseed. It was delicious, and I ended up having two! Environment-wise, people may say Heritage is "fancy," but honestly, this is Richmond, and people define that term however they please. The vibe was more intimate than other restaurants I have been to, but jeans and a shirt are totally okay. Also, I have found that an updated menu has not been posted online or outside the door. Heritage is a place to get a nice dinner before seeing a show. Its also very easy to get a reservation via yelp which I love. We arrived a few minutes early but were promptly seated. One minor ding, we were seated in the back which is right next to the swinging kitchen door and waiter prep area. There is a noticeable difference in ambiance depending on where you are located in the restaurant. It didn't overly impact our experience but it was noticeable to both my wife and me. Service was prompt and polite throughout our evening. We loved their clever and fun cocktail list. I tried two drinks, the marquee moon and the five string serenade, and really enjoyed both drinks. One of the drinks had a pretty edible color "stamp?" in it (I didn't eat it though). For appetizers we ordered the pimento croquettes and cider braised porkbelly. These apps and snacks were easily the highlight of the evening. Pork belly was melt in your mouth with a sauce I wanted to lick off the plate. The croquettes were hot, full of melty flavor, and got our appetites hungering for more. For our main meals, I got Bolognese pasta and my wife got the clamshell pasta. The dishes themselves were huge portion sizes which is nice. Everything tasted fresh and were well put together. I felt both dishes were a little too salty but my wife didn't notice it. Had brunch for a friend's birthday. We made a reservation for 7 and despite a line when we first arrived at 10:30 we were seated promptly. Overall a great rustic environment with a good size bar. Pros: - delicious eggs Benedict with pulled pork. Would highly recommend adding the pimento cheese - waitstaff was courteous and timely. Location: I think the neighbourhood is considered The Fan. I took an Uber from downtown and it took about ten minutes to get here. Street parking available but check the signage. The place: Great space with dark, hardwood floors and high ceilings, accompanied by funky art on the walls. The layout is by no means big, which I appreciate because it creates a more intimate environment. The goods: I should actually categorize this as 'The AWESOMENESS' if I want to be accurate. I started with a cocktail that was of course, delicious (I forget which one it was - it was either the 1st or 2nd on the menu). Then I had another cocktail made with their very own ginger beer (it was virgin) - this is a must-try! So tasty - the ginger really stands out. I wanted to keep my appetizer light so ordered the shrimp crackers seasoned with kimchi. While the crackers aren't made in-house, the seasoning is. Salty goodness. Yummers. Fortunately, they don't sell this crunchy goodness at home because I can easily see myself making these my snack of choice. Now, on to the main. I was already eyeballing the Gnochetti, and my choice was locked down by both my waiter and another employee - both raved about the dish and one of the fellows told me he'd had the dish five times recently so..... how can you go wrong? Fresh Gnochetti, home-made ricotta, VA Ramps (warning: if you don't like garlic, do NOT order this dish), and burrata - a whole ball just for me. The end result is a creamy, garlicky, bursting with flavour dish that will knock your f*cking socks off. Seriously. Sadly, Ramps aren't in season all year round so you might have to wait till next Spring to try this dish. Too bad for you. Even though I had no room for dessert, I felt that as a Yelp representative, it was my duty to order it anyway. Thus, I tried the vanilla bean cheesecake - 3 'scoops' of decadent (and very light) cheesecake served on a sliver of carrot cake. So, so good. I'd read some mediocre reviews of Heritage and am glad I ignored them because those people don't know what the f*ck they're talking about. GO. Service: Fantastic. For real. Perfect restaurant in every way! I had wanted to check out Heritage for many years, but talked myself out of it because I wasn't sure that I'd find anything to eat as a vegetarian. I was wrong. We initially came because a family member said they had a great Bloody Mary. It ended up being my least favorite part of the experience. It was small and thick... But the food was great! We had the duck hash, (duck confit, awesome potatoes, over easy egg, hollandaise) and the fish and grits (fried rockfish, poached egg, amazing grits, hot sauce butter). My fav was the duck hash and my wife preferred the fish and grits but we agreed that both were great. We would absolutely come back, especially to try the hot mess. read more

It may be me, but the oversaturation of New American, farm-to-table restaurants in Richmond watered my experience down a bit. I don't mean to be especially harsh on Heritage because I did have a good experience there, it just wasn't anything that wowed me. If you're visiting from out of town this is a great place to take a date and have a romantic dinner, don't get me wrong. What I did have was a delicious cocktail (Smokey The Bear? I believe), and my meal came out right, was presented nicely. I had the dinner special which was a pork tenderloin served with some udon noodles and a spicy sauce. The tenderloin was thin, dry, and a bit too crispy, but the sauce was the perfect level of spicy. The other members of my party had the flounder and duck on the menu and they were much better received. That's what I get for ordering the dinner special I guess. Can you just take a moment and look at that French toast? It was delicious!!! This was probably one of the best French toast I have ever had. I highly recommend it. Their "big hot mess" runs out really fast. Apparently it's really good, I don't eat pork so I wouldn't know, but my boyfriend really loved it. I would say their coffee is not that great. I really like strong coffee and it was more of a light roast. I also had their fish special they had with grits. The fish was good, but the grits were to die for. O. M. G. This pasta. Top 3 pastas I have ever had in my entire life. I told everyone I saw later that night about this incredible meal. We came in on a Saturday at 5:30 Pm and had to sit at the bar because it was completely packed which was annoying, but as soon as I took a bite of the amazing food, I knew why. Really great service for being at the bar as well We shared the pimento appetizer, which was small but also fantastic.
