Friends who love this place brought me here, and I was instantly charmed by it. It reminded me of a restaurant in an old log cabin, circa late 1800's, I used to dine at in West Seattle when I lived there. So while I don't know the age of this structure, the interior takes you back in time to late century pheasant paintings, brick walls and a wooden ceiling, dimly-lit antlered chandeliers everywhere casting a goldeny light and tatted lace table cloths. I immediately loved it. Their menu is more extensive than I might have guessed given its being a Germanic restaurant, providing for a variety of preferences, directly or just broadly related to its theme. (You can get a burger!) I liked everything I tasted. I would characterize generally by saying cozy, comfort, generous, filling, 1960's. My main dish was Schnitzel Oscar--veal cutlet topped with asparagus, little bay shrimps and Béarnaise sauce--a total comfort food experience. Most selections come with their red cabbage--which I was forewarned people love or hate. It's on the sweet side. Not to my taste, but okay enough. I loved the German potatoes! Razor-thin sliced and seasoned I do not know how, but yummy. And some sautéed zucchini. I liked the accompanying Caesar salad--a bit richly (read "wetly") dressed, but I liked that better than the alternative which I've had other places here in B'ham where you don't even know they are Caesars! Not here--I liked it. Of the appetizers, I had selections from the combo platter: deep fried mushroom, potato and a jalapeño popper with cream cheese. I liked them all. Their garlic bread wasn't the traditional that I am used to--and not very garlicky--but it was thick and soft and pleasant--just different. But the star was the escargot! Oh my! These were garlicky enough and buttery and delicious and served with little brioche triangles. I could have consumed three of these for my dinner (not escargot)--entire dishes of six plus the little pastry toys. Staff were adorable and sweet. Service was a wee bit slow and a little awkward at moments. If I've got sweetness to enjoy, I don't care; but to others, a little bit of patience (and slowing down to 60's speed) will make you happy with the whole charming experience. read more

Been here multiple times over the past 15 years and it's definitely hit or miss. Had a reservation still had to wait 25 minutes. Got our food 90 minutes after scheduled reservation. Went there for Valentine's Day with my wife which has become something of a tradition. Had a great table where we could watch the steaks being cooked. I always love this place. Their great attentive service and a huge portion for the meals. I ordered deep fried mushrooms and Schnitzel. Schnitzel comes w red cabbage, sautéed vegetables and soup or salad. Just enormous portion that no way I can finish! Everything is well seasoned and on point. We ate here a few weeks ago using a gift certificate we got from a windshield replacement. I wanted some good German food and ordered the chicken schnitzel with bearnaise, red cabbage, and spaetzle. The schnitzel was not a "cutlet" pounded thin, breaded and pan fried. It was thick, possibly purchased frozen and pre-breaded, and probably deep fried. The "bearnaise" had no trace of tarragon or shallot/green onion. The red cabbage was so over braised that it had no texture; it was just mush. The spaetzle were not little dumplings but noodle-like. They were dried up and lukewarm. All in all, terrible meal over-priced at $26. The one star is for good service. I feel for the young woman having to serve this food. We will not be back. read more

It's hard to believe you have to drive all the way out to Everson to get an amazing-yet-affordable steak in Whatcom County, but you won't be disappointed. These guys just know how to do steak, and do it well. Their schnitzel is amazing, too. If budget is a concern, order off the bar menu - you can get the same delicious food for less than the full service meal offered in the adjoining restaurant. My wife and I tried Herb Niemann's tonight for the first time. Not quite a 5 star rating, but pretty close, maybe 4.25. We ate early, about 5:45 on a Friday, by the looks of things when we left an hour later, reservations are probably a good idea. Neither of us was familiar with Bavarian style cuisine, however we decided to try something new. So schintzels for both of us! She had the schnitzel and bratwurst while I went with the waitresses recommendation for the Schnitzel Champignon. We also started with the fried zucchini appetizer. Truth be told we'd probably skip the app next time, as that with the soup/salad that comes with the entrée was a lot of food. That being said , the zucchini was done nicely, but the honey mustard inspired dipping sauce was a little too sweet for our tastes. The schintzels were excellent, but after trying mine with the mushroom and bernaise topping, she wanted more of it. The red cabbage on the side was deliciously tangy but not too sour. Grilled summer squash and zucchini was nicely done as well. Mixed reviews on the potatoes, I enjoyed them, she was left wanting them to have been a bit more crispy. I couldn't leave a Bavarian restaurant without having an apple strudel, warm with vanilla ice cream. Very light and flaky pastry. We also ordered a dessert coffee that was a hit as well. After all was said and done, all that food plus 4 glasses of wine we paid just over $100, including the tip. Money well spent. read more

Well My My...Where have you been all my life Herb? A dear friend who asked me if I like steak...Well, Uh, YEAH I do LOVE a good steak. She said, "You MUST go to Niemann's then." Well, then another friend said, "Their Schnitzel is to DIE for!" That's all I needed to hear to plan a trip, that day! A lovely drive through the country and we ended up in the darling town of Everson, WA on Main Street. Super easy to find and parking was good for our BIG truck. We entered through the front door in the main dining room. A warm, cozy, inviting space with cozy tables and a fireplace. We asked to sit in the bar area and grabbed a table. I did notice a side entrance for the bar area if you don't want to walk through the main dining room. Robbie, the MOST EXCELLENT bartender, stopped by with menus and made some recommendations. We started with local brews and an order of Escargot. It was priced at $10 and Lord knows, I can't pass up some juicy snails with a puff pastry top. Honey chose the Jaeger Schnitzel and I went with the Schnitzel Champignon. I'm trying to try new dishes. As we were waiting and chatting, Honey said when he walked in, it felt like a restaurant he had eaten at in Hamburg and was instantly comfortable. The appetizer hit the table and I didn't read the description but I was pleasantly surprised with the blanket of Hollandaise sauce over the dish. Grilled garlic toast was the perfect vehicle to pop them in your mouth and then sop up the butter and sauce...OMGOSH! SO GOOD! Ceasar salads were presented but a delight full conversation with the couple at the next table caused us to totally ignore those..they did look good tho. Here comes the entrees...GINORMOUS beautiful plates laden with the schnitzels. Mine had red cabbage, German potatoes and grilled zucchini & squash. Honey's had noodles, the original German style, red cabbage and grilled veggies. Schnitzel so tender your can cut it with your fork! The cabbage was like no other I have ever tasted..sweet tart deliciousness on a plate. We decided on a dessert drink. I made a special request for Mudslide style drink and Honey had neat Scotch. Robbie, was fun to watch and open to making a new drink. The entire experience was FANTASTIC and we will definitely be back because I want to try that New York strip...medium rare. read more

Sadly disappointed. You shouldn't have to request hot food when you're paying at least $50 per person. We were there on February 18, 2023. I ordered the schnitzel thank goodness part of it was ok temperature wise and I was already a bit full due to the salad and bread. My vegetables and potatoes were lukewarm. Hot food also prevents food poisoning. Customers should not pay for a restaurant of this caliber, its not worth the money if they don't serve hot food!!! read more

I love this place! I come here at least twice a year, when I get the craving for a really great steak or schnitzel. Tonight I had the Schnitzel Oskar. It was so tender it cut with a fork! It was topped with a generous helping of langostinoes and white asparagus and covered in rich bearnaise sauce. The sides were simple yet delicious - spiced red cabbage, grilled zucchini and fried potatoes. My husband's Filet Mignon was cooked perfectly and melted in my mouth ( yes, I had to try it). We have never eaten any place in Everson before and went here after we received a gift certificate for Christmas. It's not a fine dining atmosphere, but very friendly and cozy. I felt very comfortable there. Started with a combo appetizer plate with fried zucchini, jalepeno poppers and mushrooms. I ordered schnitzel cordon bleu, and my wife ordered a chicken dish with home made noodles. The entrees came with several choices of side dish, and we both ordered the salmon chowder. The entrees were very good, with ample portions and came with potatoes green beans and a red cooked cabbage. I would have preferred the potatoes a little more crispy, but the flavor was very good. I hate cooked cabbage, so was reluctant to try this, but was surprised to find that it was very good! All the portions were so large that my wife was already so full after the appetizers and chowder that she ate very little of her entrée, but took it home. I ate all of my entrée, but could not finish the potatoes and vegetables. The total bill including three drinks and the tip was around 90.00 Next time probably will skip the appetizers simply due to the portion size of the entrees. Yes, next time.. Herbs used to be my favorite restaurant but things have gone down in a hurry. My son's steak was overcooked and the chef tried to tell him that he was wrong. My other son ordered the French Onion soup and it took almost an hour to be served and, worse yet, there was no soup in it, it was soggy bread. My favorite dish, the Bavarian Platter was cold and the cutlet was overcooked and dry. Our server barely even acknowledged that we were at the table. Sure it was busy for a Thursday but to ignore a table of five where he would potentially be well tipped is in called for. I doubt that I'll ever be going back. read more

I love this place. The staff is the best - cheerful, warm, fun but not obtrusive. The Caesar salad is terrific, and the Spanish garlic prawns? Be still my heart! I can make a meal of them, no problem. Steaks are pretty darned good, as well, even though I personally don't eat a lot of red meat. Happily there are seafood options and they are excellent. Entree portions are generous and will likely require a take home box. (Steak for breakfast anyone?). Incidentally, my partner planned a surprise birthday party for me last August. The owner and staff created beautiful charcuterie platters and were very attentive the the 40+ friends who were there. You might want to consider Herb's for a larger gathering sometime. We have eaten there twice in the last 2 weeks & both meals were the best I've had in a long time! I wish I had thought to take pictures. The first meal we had a steak & the prime rib & they were both excellent. The meat was well seasoned, lean & just melted in your mouth. The second time we had the Wiener schnitzel & the schnitzel cordon bleu. They were huge servings. Both were crispy yet tender enough to cut with your fork. All the meals included delicious German fried potatoes & green beans which were also very good. They are a bit pricey but you get what you pay for especially when it comes to a steak. With the Schnitzels, there was enough for 2 meals so... Having just moved here to Nooksack, I know we will be returning often! read more

I'm compelled to write this review to help others that have not dined there before and may be misled by the gratuitously high ratings of the Past that surely don't match our experiences. The food was very basic, boring, way over salted, and too rich. The German food was not able to resemble any Bavarian or other German regional style fine food. It tasted like a confused heavy and greasy mediocre American regional attempt at German food. Expected the charcoal grilled steaks and beef to be a lot better than the dried out overcooked salt lick meat that was seved. Whatever you do, stay away from any seafood dish there. Yikes. The bread they serve is pretty low budget and an instant miss, and I am not sure why a steak house like this can not give a broader choice of salad dressings. The Caesar dressing every time gets incredibly boring. The decor is rustic in a good way, and the service was solid. Somehow the recommended micro brewed beer they served just wasn't good. I'd give them a 2 for food, a 4 for atmosphere, a 3+ for service, and a 2 for over value and experience, as unfortunately the food just wasn't good enough. Unless I was stuck near here, and incredibly hungry and desperate, I would not make it a point to go back. It looks from other Yelp reviews that ownership has changed. We've been coming here every couple of years for quite some time. Sad to say it is slipping downhill slowly. It seems to me that they've lost the spark and are going for quantity over quality. The steaks are still cooked perfectly but the quality control over the steaks seems to be gone and they no longer get top notch steaks from their supplier. My New York strip was the perfect blue which is so hard to get. But, it was gristly throughout and at least 15-20% fat. Caesar salad was good but overdressed. German potatoes? Salty, somewhat greasy and more mashed than fried. Green beans, some almost raw, some way overcooked. Apple strudel, stodgy to put it kindly. It definitely wasn't apples wrapped in puff pastry, rather a tough pie dough. And the real reason I loved this place: escargot. They used to have a delightful light sauce and topped with a puff pastry triangle at a price you couldn't beat. This time the puff pastry had raw bottoms and the sauce poured over them. The snails were still good but really lacked some TLC. WHich I think can be said for the entire meal. Will we be back? I don't know. If I can find someone else who can cook a steak blue at a reasonable price probably not. The wait staff was great, the atmosphere is pleasant. read more

When we were preparing to transplant to the area almost two years ago, our realtor drove us through town and pointed out Herb Neimann's as a Must-Go place. Two years later, we finally made it up from Skagit County and boy, are we ever sorry it took us so long. We arrived right at opening and were immediately seated. The prime rib, paired with mashed potatoes and following the salmon chowder, was amazing. The filet oscar was grilled to perfection and thankfully wasn't buried in the bearnaise (it was paired with really yummy German fried potatoes and followed a nice, light Caesar salad.) Herb's is one of the few remaining places in the county where you can still get your fix if you crave a nice big delicious steak of the 18-22oz variety and despise the "large" 8oz steak you get at other places. There is glass on one side of their "grilling room" so you can watch the steaks sizzle from some areas in the dining area. Salad and sides are good, and they have some great specials that are take-out worthy if you don't have time to sit in. read more

The quality of the food has gone downhill. We used to go here for special occasions, out of town visitors, etc., but the last two times we went it was totally mediocre. I used to like the place because I could get my steak the way like it. Ordered my steak rare and it came medium. Tried to send it back and got a pushback from the cook and the waiter. So I ate it. It was medium. Not rare. The potatoes were cold, greasy and bland, the veggies over cooked. The bread is sort of like Wonder Bread dipped in butter. What a bummer, I need to find a steakhouse somewhere. Or make 'em myself. Birthday dinner strikes again. We live very near this restaurant and my husband really likes the steak here. This time we went to the bar because we were told the menu was less expensive and the atmosphere a little more relaxed. For some reason I always feel like I am in Wisconsin when we are here (I can say that because I have lived in WI for some time). Unfortunately we sat next to a table of women (maybe 6-7) who were full of self righteous bullsh*t. This also felt like Wisconsin. After having a short convo about the trials of my day at work (which if anyone overheard, as these ladies were directly behind my seat, might get the idea I work around people who need public assistance) they proceeded to have a very loud talk about their opinions of the min wage, how those people should just "get an education" and get over it. Then they moved on to their various talking points of the week, it sounded so rehearsed I thought I was in a Saturday Night Live skit and I was waiting for Dan Akroyd to walk in with a dress on pretending to be part of the group. It was my husband's birthday, he had a tough day at work, and it was all I could do to keep him from making a scene with these rude women. Gathering from the looks we got from the rest of the people in there I wouldn't be surprised if most of them were on the same page. That said, I ordered a dark and stormy. The waitress had to ask me if that had ginger beer in it and when I said it did, she said they only had ginger ale. I said that was fine. My husband ordered a mai tai, which I had tried here a couple years ago and it was good then, but when it arrived it tasted/looked like a glass full of pineapple juice with grenadine poured on top. I don't know where the alcohol was. My drink arrived in a teeny tiny glass, with no lime or lime juice in it. Besides that it was lacking the traditional copper mug (which is easily forgiven), it was just ginger ale and a little vodka. That set the bar for the evening. Our ceasar salads were nice and garlicky but there was a bit too much of the creamy dressing and no other vegetables besides the romaine. I ordered the appetizer of spanish garlic prawns, which arrived in a tiny cast iron skillet full of oil with about 4-5 medium prawns swimming in it. It had a little piece of kale as a garnish and as soon as I saw it I said "I want more of this," to myself. If they would serve these slightly peppery prawns with a side of kale to refresh the palate it would be great. But vegetables are not a priority in this place (despite the plethora of organic farms within walking distance). My husband's steak was great as usual. His slimy chunks of oily zucchini (not in season) were not great. Because the potatoes are not organic, he skipped them (any potato grown conventionally is defoliated with the main ingredient in agent orange, paraquat, before harvesting). These rude women next to us talked the whole time about their ridiculous self-righteousness and we couldn't wait to get out of there. We saw the owner near the door, he appeared to know most of the people in there so I am inclined to say this is the kind of crowd they prefer. The service was excellent. We had a gift certificate from Louis Auto Glass that I received after one of the gravel trucks on Everson-Goshen put a hole in my windshield for the 4th time in two years. Supposedly it covers dinner for two, but being only $35 it covers a steak for one and a drink. It was a complete waste of money and time for us personally. It's too bad because we usually tell people to go here if they want a good steak in this county. We are locals and we will never be going back. read more

The name of this place is actually Herb Niemann's Steak and Schnitzel House it's in Everson. The steaks are absolutely to die for, aged and cooked over a wood fired grill isn't something you get very often these days. The New York rare was so tender and juicy it was like butter. My only regret was that I didn't order a side of Bearnaise to go over it. I really appreciated the grilled veggies and potatoes as well. We had no idea what we were getting into when we dropped in here for dinner one stormy night. I was surprised to find that their tea option was basically just 'Lipton'. I was desperate for a juicy rare steak as it was that time of the month, and the steak I had here was above and beyond any expectations I had for such a remote location. Definitely going back there. My partner's Mixed grill plate was fantastic too, the sausages were amazing. I couldn't stop thinking about that steak for about a week and I am drooling even now thinking about it--so tender! We were especially fortunate as they put us at the table in front of the wood-fired grill--so we could watch our steaks being cooked through a heat-proof window. read more
