This is one of my favorite restaurants and I love sitting in the front dining room. Recently we went with a party of 9 and were seated in the back but were pleasantly surprised with how great the ambience was. I wish I could remember the waitresses name as she was so friendly and attentive even though she had 4 large tables to wait on. Our schnitzel and shrimp were delicious and the portions were huge. The name of this place is actually Herb Niemann's Steak and Schnitzel House it's in Everson. The steaks are absolutely to die for, aged and cooked over a wood fired grill isn't something you get very often these days. The New York rare was so tender and juicy it was like butter. My only regret was that I didn't order a side of Bearnaise to go over it. I really appreciated the grilled veggies and potatoes as well. We had no idea what we were getting into when we dropped in here for dinner one stormy night. I was surprised to find that their tea option was basically just 'Lipton'. I was desperate for a juicy rare steak as it was that time of the month, and the steak I had here was above and beyond any expectations I had for such a remote location. Definitely going back there. My partner's Mixed grill plate was fantastic too, the sausages were amazing. I couldn't stop thinking about that steak for about a week and I am drooling even now thinking about it--so tender! We were especially fortunate as they put us at the table in front of the wood-fired grill--so we could watch our steaks being cooked through a heat-proof window. read more

My brother was jonesing for this, having had the Herb Niemann gospel shared with him soon after voyaging west---and despite my ultimately futile resistance, he was spot on. It didn't hurt to hike some Chuckanut switchbacks for most of the day, either. 18-oz. T-bone med. rare was mouth-meltingly good. Perfectly seared crust, warm throughout, seasoned just enough. German-style potatoes & grilled squash. Caesar salad with great homemade dressing, texas toast. Fried mushrooms also good. Chuckanut Dunkel on tap...good call. Having never had a dry-aged steak before (or having been to a true steakhouse; hey now, I am a recovering vegetarian of 7+ yrs); I can't offer a comparison, but this was the finest tasting steak I've ever encountered, impossibly tender and so intensely beef flavored that I could only speak in monosyllabic primal notions until it disappeared from the oval, blue & white dish. Unlike other steakhouses, the price-point is inclusive of your potato, salad, and bread; something I appreciated due to the fact I was being treated like a King. Worth a drive! This is the original "Jack Niemann's" Steakhouse...and it still is the best! (apologies to all the lawyers and legal types about any potential trademark infringement or name misuse) Sunday evening at Black Forest was great. The bar was our destination. The bar menu used to be a better deal, but it is still pretty good. I ordered the Schnitzel Champignon (as I have done before) and I was not disappointed. The Schnitzel was nicely done with tasty bernaise and mushrooms. The schnitzel is why I order this dish, it is devine. The potatoes are, meh, okay (they seem overcooked) and the beets are okay. They remind me of beets my Mom used to cook (when I was a kid) but they aren't as good. The German roots of the Black Forest Steakhouse is the strength of this place. The steaks are awesome, too. The broiler is really extraordinary. Make the trip to Everson (yeah, this isn't the one on Barkley). It's worth it!! read more

Amazing! We came all the way from Whidbey Island based on reviews and had 5 wonderful dinners. Two had the Cordon-Bleu schnitzel, one had the Jaeger schnitzel, one had schnitzel and bratwurst and I had the filet mignon that literally melted in my mouth. I make my own Caesar dressing from scratch and can tell you theirs came awfully close to mine which borders on perfection! No Kraft dressing in sight! Staff is fast and attentive and Herb came over to talk to all the tables one by one. What a neat guy who was so gracious. Told us all of his steaks come in from Nebraska and are aged on sight. Cooked to perfection. I had bites of everyone's meals and they were all delicious. It was well worth the drive, well worth the cost and we can't wait to go back. How I heard of this place: Through my parents; apparently, the reviews had reached southern California! Type of cuisine: "For dinner, Herb Niemann's Steak and Schnitzel House offers a mouth-watering array of steaks, Bavarian specialties, seafood and desserts. There is no substitute for great food in a comfortable setting to please the palate and Herb Niemann's Steak and Schnitzel house delivers just that." Ambiance: Greeted by a hatchet doorknob stuck in the large, wooden door, I immediately knew we were in for a treat! The large windows along the front of the establishment barely allowed walker-by to see the dark interior, with minimal lighting. The small hallway at the entrance, wooden walls and a small white, dry erase board, listing the drink specialties, while a chalkboard provided the food specials of the evening, ended with a vine-wrapped terrace just before one enters the log-cabin-esque restaurant. Just beyond a half-wall divider between the hallway and the back of the establishment, is the grill, behind a glass window, that resembles a fireplace. The thick wooden tables and large, cozy armchairs make every seat a comfortable one at Herb Niemann's. The seats we requested, at the window, also offered a booth along one side of the table, where my parents comfortably took their seats ahead of Mojgan and I. Hunting displays, including antlers hung like a chandelier at the middle of the restaurant ceiling, Bavarian art, including shelves of ceramics and pottery, hung in the rustic feel of the interior, where brick walls and wooden accents dwell. A stone fireplace creates a sense of home and warmth, nestled among the chairs and tables at the center of the establishment, while mini white lights lace the edges of the mesquite grill. What I ordered: Celebratin my dad's birthday, our family started with two appetizers, Breaded Zucchini ($4.95) with a Hollandaise-style dipping sauce, and Breaded Mushrooms ($4.95), each served in a small cast iron two-handled skillet. Our meals each came with a side of either Lentil Soup, Goulash Soup (made with sirloin and tenderloin), or Caesar Salad, with homemade dressing, and the option of upgrading (for a few dollars more, $3.95) to the Baked French Onion Soup. Tempted to join my dad and my sister with their orders of Caesar Salad, I went with the French Onion Soup, at the high recommendation of our server and to assist in diversifying our meals. My mom selected the Lentil chowder. For dinner, I selected the Schnitzel Cordon Bleu ($16.95), which won First prize at the World Culinary Competition in Paris, France! The breaded cutlet is filled with ham and Swiss cheese before being fried, and is served on a large, tin plate with potatoes, pickled red cabbage and green beans. Each entree is served with garlic toast, which was set at our table along with the appetizers. My parents each ordered Wiener Schnitzel ($15.95 each), a Vienna style breaded cutlet served with a lemon wedge, pickled red cabbage, potatoes and green beans. My sister selected the Schnitzel Neptune ($18.95), at my recommendation, because I wanted to try the tiger prawns served with drawn butter for dipping, alongside the breaded cutlet and vegetables on the rest of our plates. What I loved: The garlic toast, I must admit, was my favorite thing by way of sides. I thoroughly enjoyed the crisp breading of the schnitzels, the Cordon Bleu winning my vote for taste, consistency and diversity. Despite the extra-saltiness of the French Onion Soup, I love that there was no skimping on cheese, leaving more than enough to enjoy with my garlic toast! I knew I would love the joint when I saw, on the front of the menu, a quote by Herb Niemann, Chef & Owner, "My culinary art is wasted on those who salt before they've tasted." Herb Niemann's steakhouse is a GEM of a restaurant. What a find in the incredibly quaint, and understated town of Everson. As someone who does not live in the town of Everson, I was always certain that I would have absolutely no reason to ever visit. After all, what did they even have there? Boy, was I wrong. Although a bit dated and dark inside, I didn't care. I was there for the food, not the decor. If you are over 21, I definitely suggest sitting in the bar. You can get some of the same menu items as in the regular dining room, but at a fraction of the price. Now, for the food. My dining companions and I each started out with a Caesar salad, and it was divine. I prefer a Caesar that has a hint of an anchovy flavor without it being too fishy, as well as a lighter texture. A starter salad it meant to whet your appetite and open your palette; the last thing you want to do is have a heavy, creamy dish before another heavy, creamy dish. The Caesar here was the perfect introduction to what was going to be an even more satisfying main course. I ordered the Chicken Schnitzel, which was a breaded chicken breast covered in a creamy Bearnaise sauce and sauteed mushrooms. It came with cheesy, bacon potatoes, red cabbage, and a gargantuan piece of garlic toast. All of this food came in at a whopping $12.99. Keep in mind, if you order this in the restaurant, it is almost $18! Overall, I had a lovely time at Herb Niemann's. The service was friendly and quick, and the food was outstanding. Although I did mention that decor is not of the utmost importance, I did have to knock this establishment down a star simply for the ambiance. We used to like this place. But... tonite we took family to dinner and found a pretty large piece of plastic in my salad. Of course we let our waitperson know and she graciously took it back. However when the burger arrived and wasn't prepared as we ordered we took it back to the kitchen where we were met by the "owner?" Who basically accused us of planting the piece of plastic and also said that the burger was delivered as we ordered it.. (it was NOT how we ordered it). Upon talking with one of our family members they said they had been here with a very large group and someone had found hairs in the fried oysters a few months back. Lots of hairs.. Upon looking at the plastic piece it appears to me to have been the end of one of the black serving utensils. I wouldn't have minded that as you know.. stuff happens. But to have been falsely accused was the straw that broke the camels back. We will never ever go back to this place again and Never recommend it. On a brighter note our waitperson was the best. --- This is posted after the "comments" by the "owner". Very convenient to put the blame back on the customer once again... ... if you talk to the majority of restaurant owners, making the customer experience a good one, including accepting responsibility where it's due is the acceptable response. Everything was good at Herb Niemann's, beginning with the gracious hostess. I asked the waitperson if the bar stocked a good German Pilsner. She threw up her arms and with a huge smile announced that they had Radeberger on tap. On tap, mind you! Well now! That was just the beginning. When she came for the salad order, I advised her that I am hard-of-hearing and she made sure that I had no trouble understanding her for the rest of the evening in that crowded room. Caesar salad: crisp Romaine with Caesar dressing, grated (probably) Parmigiano cheese, and crisp croutons. She had a huge table to serve and she handled it very well with her huge smile and bon vivant attitude. My entree order was for chicken breast smothered in light cream sauce infused with wine, ham bits and sliced mushrooms over a bed of spaetzle. My wife ordered prawns served with the same embellishments. Great food in good quantity. There were two young chidren in our group and our waitperson charmed them all to pieces. Sour faces turned to big smiles and lots of giggles with perfect behavior. Thank you, waitperson! It had been some time since I took a meal at Herb Niemann's, the more's the pity. Save your money and go elsewhere.. it use to be good but is always bad anymore.. gave it another try recently and definitely won't be back.. found a piece of plastic in our salad and the owner called me a list because they don't have black plastic in their kitchen.. upon further examination the plastic was the end cap of the cheap plastic cutlery they use... ordered a burger and it came out cold.. some weird sauce and no bacon.. the owner said we can throw som bacon on it.. I told her to keep it.. it was ordered for my nephew.. he is 9 and wanted it plain with bacon and lettuce... the waitress was great.. the owner was angry and it shows in the bad quality of the food.. we were with our friends who live down the street.. they had already told me they said they would never go back prior to us arriving.. last night confirmed this for all of us read more

Love this place! Been here a few times, at least twice for the rib eye steak and once for the German food. Each time the portions were ample -- I ate slowly, but relented to portion size and took food home. The food is delicious! The left overs were yummy reminders. Went there for the first time on Monday night. Not busy, which is cool. The axe door handle was a hoot! I had the Weiner Schnitzel and my wife a well-done steak. Both were perfect. Service was prompt and friendly. I love the ambiance. They have a full bar and a bar menu if you don't want the dining room fare. Slightly smaller portions and prices. Came here for an early Valentine's Day dinner. We were greeting shortly after getting through the door. We made reservations which I would recommend. Get a set right next to the grill that the steaks are made. Great seat! The food was cooked to perfection and was the best steaks we have ever tried. I was not disappointed with anything we received. As a former employee ( waaaaay back), I know a lot about this place. As anyone who has worked in restaurants knows, it doesn't take long to get sick of the food where you work, and it is rare to visit a place after you've worked there. Herb Niemann's is SO good that I will take any opportunity to eat there, even after all these years. That's especially significant, given that the place is out in Everson, about 30 minutes NE of Bellingham. However, the drive is actually one of the best reasons to go- taking you East toward the towering Mt. Baker, past rolling pastures and the Nooksack River. It's the steak, though, that really does it. Wow! The combination of a special aging process and a unique blend of spices makes these steaks extraordinary. The homemade Caesar dressing on the salads makes a perfect partner. If you like spice, try the Cajun steak...you'll taste it for hours...but in a good way. Note, this is not a place where you need to dress up. It's surprisingly casual, given the food quality. Went here for a Sunday night dinner with my family. My parents have gone here and loved their steak and asparagus. The asparagus was very yummy, make sure to order a side of it! They had a couple different schnitzel options. The ones we have had were all solid standard schnitzels. The potatoes that came with it were super delicious. I found the red cabbage was a bit overcooked and too mushy for my taste. The atmosphere & decor is very country comfy. I loved it. The staff was also super friendly! I've been coming here for as long as I can remember with my grandma, who lived out in Everson. I've never had a bad meal, and I can honestly say its the best steak I've ever had. Sure, its a bit out of the way for us (we live in Birch Bay) but its worth the trip. If I want a good steak, and want to know it will be cooked just like I asked, served hot every time, this is the only place to go. Bar seating is a little more affordable than the dining room, and their drinks are great. I prefer sitting by the fire grill, drooling and speculating which of the delicious hunks of steak is mine. I like my steak just past mooing, and I know the chefs appreciate that. I've heard rumor that if you order a well done steak you might get a firm "no" or a talking to. Who ruins good meat like that anyways? :) The sides are delicious- the potatoes (which I have tried and failed to replicate) I could eat a plate of those alone. The veggies are always fresh, and the salads are delicious. Next time we go, I am going to try the goulash and I will update with that. This has got to be one of the best steak houses in the Northwest. The Cajun sirloin is excellent as well as all the others. I have been going here for many years now and every time it has been a great experience. You must have the apple strudel for desert. If I were just rating this restaurant on food, I'd give them a 2. For the lively local-watering hole atmosphere, I'd go 4. Net? This popular local restaurant, which has almost no competitors within a ten mile radius, is a fun night out (especially if you choose bar seating) but don't go expecting authentic German food. I've been twice. Best thing to order is the steaks. They do a pretty good job getting every order right (though beware, rareness is measured on the European scale where even a medium rare steak is raw in the middle), but their German food...well, it sucks. The schnitzels are deep fried (probably from frozen) and the spaetzle is neither fresh nor home-made. (If you don't understand what I'm talking about, go to the Cafe Mozart in Leavenworth--they'll set you right.) Their methods, though, likely explain why the owners are trying to sell fast food schnitzel franchises. That's SO wrong. read more

We live in Bellingham, but when we want to enjoy a festive night out with our grown family, this is where we come. It is basically unchanged in the twenty three years we've been coming here, but that is a very good thing in the case of the Black Forest (as it was originally called, before the Niemann Brothers' split). The decor is German-hunting-lodge, with a view of the flaming grill dominating the front room. The ax-doorhandle is a nifty touch. On a snowy winter night, there is nowhere as cozy as that front dining room. The food is ample, well-cooked, and savory. The preliminary bread is a healthy slab of garlic-buttered goodness, and my family members always debate the relative merits of the Caesar salad (my favorite), goulash soup, and lentil soup. Difficult decisions! As others have noted, the steaks are famous, and any of the schnitzel preps are very good (though pork, not veal). I'd recommend substituting spaetzle if it's not included (though the potatoes are quite good, also). Herb is usually there, overseeing the place. Quality control! We always laugh a LOT when we are here. read more
