We had dinner for two here on a Friday evening. The atmosphere, service, and food were all exceptional. The portions are very generous, and we both took home sizable portions to enjoy at home. We ordered schnitzel Neptune, and the Mixed Grill. Both platters had nicely roasted Brussels sprouts, German style potatoes, and red cabbage. The mixed grill included spiced sauerkraut, too. We are so happy this restaurant didn't close after another unexpected river flood. The refurbishing is lovely, and the chairs are so comfortable. The dinners started with a very tasty Caesar salad, along with Texas toast. This is my only criticism. For a nice restaurant of this caliber, with such a fantastic menu, I would suggest a more discerning bread option. The aged steaks, and lovely German menu deserve something a little more upscale. The Apple strudel was out of this world. We have enjoyed every dinner we have had here, and can't wait to come again. We recommend it to all our family and friends! read more

I make it a habit to try German restaurants whenever possible. This place is one of the best! Great atmosphere Great staff. They were so nice to accommodate any substitutions. And the food was incredible! Perfectly cooked schnitzel. The cordon bleu had so much flavor. The German potato's were so crispy and delicious. I'd also recommend the Jager gravy. My wife and I just relocated from California to the quaint farming community of Everson. My cousin treated me to Niemans and I enjoyed the pub steak so much that when my wife arrived a day later, I took her there as well. My 2nd time I got the schnitzel and she got the pub steak. We both loved the ambience of this restaurant. I also order the salmon chowder and the German potatoes are just excellent . The first time I had mashed potatoes with brown gravy. We enjoyed meeting Sara and getting to know her. I highly recommend This place and looking forward to grazing thru the rest of their menu! read more

I'm not exactly sure where to start - this place blew my mind. Friends told us we should go, and I made the executive decision to trek to Everson. Steak and schnitzel - ok, interesting, but we'll go try it? They raved and they're pretty discerning about food, so away we went. I can't believe I doubted them because service was friendly and casual, the food was seriously good, and portions were hefty. We had a steak and schnitzel (duh) and ordered a side of spaetzle because I had no idea what it was. My steak was literally perfect - cooked rare, but grilled and charred on the outside. The flavor was insane. The green beans with almonds and bacon were so good, I had to stop myself from eating them to save room for the steak. I love me some potatoes, too, and there were enough of them to take home for a breakfast or two. The schnitzel was the best I've ever had in my life - it was so tender you could cut it with a fork, but the breading was super crispy. It's hard to strike that balance! The red cabbage on the side offered a lovely contrast in taste and texture, and the béchamel sauce was so so good. The ONLY thing I would have said is that the spaetzle came out just as that - plain - and was pretty dry and could have used a sauce. While it's not the cheapest place, you get what you pay for, and I'd gladly pay for this again. Bring cash to avoid a fee, and go with a large appetite. You won't be sorry. read more

Another experience, worth shouting out about! We reside in Anacortes, WA. This Restaurant is one of our "Favorites", even though it is nearly 1.5hrs from our home. When in the area, we make all efforts to visit this restaurant, for good reason, the Food (always been good to/for us) and on this particular evening (2025.07.24), the Service we experienced. Our Wait Person was Chelsey. We're taking the time to actually leave a review for this visit, the food and of course, Chelsey. The Service Chelsey provided that we received was excellent. Chelsey was fun, attentive, receptive, engaging, courteous and understanding. A small group of 4, we had 2 infrequent guests attending, and 2 first timers. That said, we were all in agreement, that Chelsey made the evening significantly better. From seatings us down, through Drinks, Starters, Main Meals up through a sharable Dessert, Chelsey handled the entire 1.5 hours of time with energy, calmness, discussions and a great deal of attention to our needs (some more than others, as usual)...special request, check, drink recommendations, check, thoughts of one meal vs. another, check - and then, the actual check (check)! Chelsey made us feel special and appreciated, start to finish. While we infrequently leave reviews, think our last was a year ago for dining near Sequim, Washington...this particular night was essentially perfect, regarding both our dining and service experiences - worthy of recommending both. We started with some Wine, moved into Starters of Bread (like Texas Toast???), Salads, Goulash, into main meals like Salsbury Steak, Prawn Spaetzle, Salmon Chowder (first time trying, was actually very good), Neimanns Burger and few more items...ending on an Apple Strudel Ala Mode. As usual, the entire meal was both approved and appreciated by us all. Our appreciation to the entire Herb Niemanns team, the cooks and staff on this particular night, made 2 of us look really good/positive, to the 2 visitors who also enjoyed both, the food and service as well...thanks Herb Niemanns, and thanks Chelsey! Decline in quality? It's been a year or two since I last been to Herb Niemann's and what I remember it was quite good food but I returned tonight and was very disappointed. Our waitress was helpful and polite but the food and drinks were awful and not as I remember. We started off with a Moscow mule and it tasted like old lime water without the ginger beer, for appetizer we ordered the prawns cocktail which tasted fine but $16 for 4 prawns is a little ridiculous. For our dinner we got steak that was well undercooked than what we ordered. Overall, not at all what I remember of Herb Niemann's. I don't mind spending "a pretty penny" for a nice dinner every once in a while but definitely not acceptable for the price they are charging for mediocre food and the lack of costumers in the dining room on a Saturday night has reflected that. Have been here once before for an event that served some hors d'oeuvre. This time sat at the bar and watched a world series game on TV. Bar was somewhat high yet i didn't mind. Ordered the bar steak and it came out perfectly done, nice grill marks. When cut it open was a little underwhelmed that the steak was only warm, not hot. Steak itself was great, thick, nicely seasoned and perfectly done The potatoes were also nicely seasoned yet lacked heat, meaning they were slightly above room temperature and not really hot. Lack of hot food is what caused them to lose a star. Everything else was perfect and waitstaff was amazing, only wish food was warmer. This is unforgivable in a nice place like this. read more

Finally got to try Herb. Went there for my husband's birthday because we heard so much about their steak and he wanted steak for his birthday. First, the decor is definitely eccentric. Antlers hanging off the ceiling and all with that ole fashion vibe. Not sure if that is the "German" decor but I was definitely loving it. We had made reservation as stated on the website, but I don't think you need to as there were not a lot of diners this night. The only minus star I gave was because we brought our kids with us and there was really not much of an option for them to eat. My husband ordered the ribeye and he said it was cooked perfectly. I ordered the Oscar and for it being my first time, I really liked it. Kids were not a fan of their "Texas toast"? and my kid did not like the mash potatoes that she ordered nor the bbq wings. Otherwise, us adults were happy with our meal. It is a bit of a drive to dine here so more than anything we don't anticipate to drive back. The food was good, but not worth the drive or the cost to make it back. If you want a good steak, I would suggest you go to the Steak House in the Silver Reef casino. The drive is shorter and I think the steak personally is much better for the price. read more

We were excited to come back to this favorite restaurant which we have gone to for many years......but it's been awhile. We very disappointed in the quality of the food. We ordered the Weiner schnitzel. As we ate we wondered why the texture was strange and the taste was not like it used to be either. When we returned home I looked at the "veal" in good lighting. I took the substantial breading off and examined the meat. I realized what the problem was, this wasn't a slice of veal, but a "chunked and formed" piece of processed meat! It was disgusting. We don't eat processed food in general and to be served that as Weiner shnitzel in a German style restaurant is absurd. It looked as if perhaps it had been preseasoned, though I couldn't be sure. Sorry to,say the potatoes were mushy as well. The cabbage was overly sweet with no tang to them at all. The Brussels were just OK, a little overcooked as well. However for my meal I had the French onion soup and a Caesar salad and the soup was awful...it was WAY too salty that it was inedible. The Caesar salad tasted like a basic Caesar salad. At one point we had to walk into the bar to order a drink due to how long it was taking for them to bring our drinks. Okay Yelpers. If you are in the north sound get your butts up to Herb Niemann's . It's like a north woods lodge in there. They have plenty of space and a very cool back room they might use for a large party. You will not be disappointed. We went back for a second visit because I wanted a Porterhouse steak. Herb's is 18 ounces of beefy goodness. I had mine medium rare (the only way in my world) and it was fantastic. Just the right amount of char on both sides. It was easy to cut and definitely easy to eat. They put their own blend of seasoning on it (they also sell it) which boosts the flavor of the beef into the stratosphere. I decided not to buy it so it will be special when I go back. I had a double order of German potatoes which was probably over a pound by themselves. I couldn't finish them but you can bet your beef eating rear ends I finished the steak. Once again the staff was great. I think our server was the sister of the server we had last time. She was friendly and very efficient. We wanted for nothing and they are all easy to look at as well. Mrs Billy D had her Chicken Cordon Bleu which was also stellar. Next time we will ride up and take up residence in their bar and try the bar menu. I'm sure it's just as great. I'm sure glad we discovered Herb's. My last trip to Washington I had the pleasure of dining here. It has such a unique, but nostalgic vibe and you get some of the best German food to boot. The restaurant and tavern are kind of dimly lit. Decor and feel are like an old, homey lodge. You get the feeling it has been around for decades and has not changed a bit, which is a good thing in this case. Almost all of the tables were full when we were in there on a Saturday night. Always a good sign! Not too loud, but also not austerely serious. You could hear laughter and the hostess playing happy birthday on a set of hand bells (the kind you ring by shaking) for a few lucky patrons. Relaxing and fun. After you eat all of the delicious food, you then understand that everyone just wants to be in their food coma among friends. We had a good sampling of the menu at our table. Some schnitzels, the spatzle, and one steak. The salads and French onion soup coming out first with Texas toast in the bread baskets to start. Everything served on old plates that reminded me of holiday dinners at my Grandma's house. Not a drop or crumb was wasted. Then the entrees came out. Huge portions of amazing food. The best German food I have had (with the disclaimer that I have never had this food in Germany). There was a pile of spatzle with chicken covered in white wine sauce. Everything on my platter down to the red cabbage was just fantastic. Friends gave me bites of their schnitzel, which was gigantic but perfectly cooked. Not dried out and tough. We tried our hardest to eat what we could, but we all had boxes to take home. Not a bad thing as It was even better the second night! I really like this place and would come more often if it was not 30 min away. The food is great and huge portions are the norm. Hands down the BEST prime rib dinner my husband and I have had in Whatcom County !! Every bite was better than the last. No gristle and really tender. Went on a busy night but our reservation was right on time and we were seated by a window which was very nice. Our server was friendly and attentive. Overall the food was good. Our party of 4 all had German dishes. Plenty of food. Good portions. Only disappointment were the German potatoes. They are usually one of our favorites but these were all well overdone and dry. Was actually surprised they even served them. Probably should have sent them back but there was plenty of food. Their German dishes are really good and we will be sure to go back. Food is great! Ambience and atmosphere is also so amazing. Genuinely, service sucks. It's unfortunate to go in there and feel like a burden and treated like an inconvenience. I've tried to give this particular bartender the benefit of the doubt a few times especially working in the industry.. however I get treated with the same service consistently now and it's pretty sad. The cooks cooking was spot on. I ordered a ribeye steak and my wife ordered New York steak. The quality of the steaks was BAD. The ribeye steak was really bad. I had to saw my way through the steak. We ate at Herb Nieman's tonight and had a very disappointing experience. The host seated us but our server never arrived. Rhe host ended up taking our order and bringing us salads. We then waited 45 minutes between our salads and dinner arriving. When the plates came, my spouse's was hot, and my plate and the food on it was room temperature. The server came back 15 minutes later to check on us. I said my food was cold and asked if I wanted it to be remade if "we weren't on a time crunch." I said we'd already been there for over an hour. At the end of the night, I had to ask for the bill so we could go. Bad service start to finish. I like this restaurant a lot, but they really ruined my spouse's bday meal and didn't seem to care. read more

We've been coming here for 20 years. In the past 2-3 years, I have noticed the quality has declined. The meat on the menu is still top notch and delicious. The sides are the issue. The potatoes that come with every dish is lukewarm, old tasting and flavorless. Fresh vegetables are always zucchini. It would seem if potatoes are in every dish, they would be fresh. Friends who love this place brought me here, and I was instantly charmed by it. It reminded me of a restaurant in an old log cabin, circa late 1800's, I used to dine at in West Seattle when I lived there. So while I don't know the age of this structure, the interior takes you back in time to late century pheasant paintings, brick walls and a wooden ceiling, dimly-lit antlered chandeliers everywhere casting a goldeny light and tatted lace table cloths. I immediately loved it. Their menu is more extensive than I might have guessed given its being a Germanic restaurant, providing for a variety of preferences, directly or just broadly related to its theme. (You can get a burger!) I liked everything I tasted. I would characterize generally by saying cozy, comfort, generous, filling, 1960's. My main dish was Schnitzel Oscar--veal cutlet topped with asparagus, little bay shrimps and Béarnaise sauce--a total comfort food experience. Most selections come with their red cabbage--which I was forewarned people love or hate. It's on the sweet side. Not to my taste, but okay enough. I loved the German potatoes! Razor-thin sliced and seasoned I do not know how, but yummy. And some sautéed zucchini. I liked the accompanying Caesar salad--a bit richly (read "wetly") dressed, but I liked that better than the alternative which I've had other places here in B'ham where you don't even know they are Caesars! Not here--I liked it. Of the appetizers, I had selections from the combo platter: deep fried mushroom, potato and a jalapeño popper with cream cheese. I liked them all. Their garlic bread wasn't the traditional that I am used to--and not very garlicky--but it was thick and soft and pleasant--just different. But the star was the escargot! Oh my! These were garlicky enough and buttery and delicious and served with little brioche triangles. I could have consumed three of these for my dinner (not escargot)--entire dishes of six plus the little pastry toys. Staff were adorable and sweet. Service was a wee bit slow and a little awkward at moments. If I've got sweetness to enjoy, I don't care; but to others, a little bit of patience (and slowing down to 60's speed) will make you happy with the whole charming experience. read more
