Three stars - Fine We went here with some friends on a Saturday night to catch up while we were in town. Overall, I enjoyed the atmosphere of the bar. My biggest gripe was that the live music was too loud. I am used to loud music in the background, but this felt louder than normal--all of my friends were complaining about it. This obviously made it difficult to talk with others. It might not be as loud when there is not live music. The food and drinks were okay. It is bar food with a Bavarian twist. Our servers were nice and periodically checked in to refill our drinks. I'm not sure if I would go here again if I was in town, but this would be a fun spot for some. read more

We had lunch here and were able to bring our dog with us. The whole place has outdoor seating and they also have an area with games such as corn hole and a stage for music. I ordered the curry wurst plate which came with potatoes and a few different mustards. I enjoyed my food here and the place itself, I would come back here. read more

Perfect business model for Covid times! We took a walk around Lake Padden with the pup and wanted to reward ourselves with a hearty lunch (maybe we should have done 2 laps around!). Popped into the Schweinhaus Biergarten with the pup and were greeted immediately by a friendly host who asked us to use the hand sanitizer and told us the new rules. No more than 5 per table, table service only, menu available via QR code. We ordered 2 brats each, mine with sauerkraut and his with potatoes. A marten for him, an IPA for me. The host cranked on our heaters and even got a bowl of water for the pepper. The beers arrived in half liter tankards followed by our brat plates, served with three different mustards. Everything was delicious! Highly recommend this place. The outdoor area is nicely sheltered and there are 2 big screens. GREMLINS was playing when we arrived, followed by a European Soccer match. If you're looking for authenticity you won't find it here. I grew up in Germany and am attending wwu now. When I heard about this place I was so excited. I went up to order in German and they looked at me like I was crazy. I proceeded to order the curry wurst. Funnily enough, there's no curry on it. It's not curry wurst at all. It's plain sausage served with mustard... and it's just about the most German their menu gets unfortunately. I'll be happy to give it another try when they figure out what actual curry wurst is, or at least start advertising their dish as a plain brat with mustard and sauer kraut. Which is all it is. but yeah if you're American have at it... might be your thing. If you love authentic German food, you're gonna have to go across the Canada border unfortunately. read more

Cool spot, great concept. Although something's are lacking. Service is walk up, no prob there. Beer came out fast. Food and drink are pricey, but it is Bellingham in a high inflation economy, so get that. Pretzel was tasty and fresh. Great sauces come with. The sausage I got had two pieces of large bone in them that could have chipped my tooth easily.. got the poutine. The cheese curds were cold, right out of the fridge, asked the chef, he said that's how they're supposed to be.. So never get the poutine here.. Lastly it took awhile to get the food. Probably 25 min. Which is a little ridiculous considering we were the only ppl with a food order. To sum it up: food was still tasty, but had some MAJOR flaws. Expensive spot. I am a little embarrassed that I've been going here for years and haven't written a review. I love this place - yes the food is a bit slow, so don't be in a rush, but there's always good beers on tap, and I am excited about how it's evolved. It started out as very open air, minimally covered, smaller, and with porta-potties when I first moved to WA. Over the years, they've expanded up to the back open area (also with a covered set of tables), another bar up there, lots of strong heaters, fully covered main area, and REAL BATHROOMS! Yesterday, I had a radler (don't judge, I'm hanging on to summer as long as I can) and I kid you not - it was like an orange juice seltzer. It was SO tasty and dangerous - I'm glad I got a half liter instead of a full....I would have been in trouble! You can always count on Scheweinhaus to have beers from all over and they've added wine and cocktails to the menu as well. We got the chili fries - which to our pleasant surprise, was being substituted with pulled pork. The fries are super thick cut curly ones, there was at least a pound of pulled pork, jalapenos, and hot sauce on them, and despite "not being hungry" we couldn't stop ourselves. During important games, like UW, NFL, sometimes baseball games, they have two big screens and their own solo "bar" area facing them. It's decently warm, the picnic tables are great, and it's dog friendly! read more

So, we have been going here for years. Our favorite I'd the cheddar eirst. It was always good. Crispy skin cheesy juicy middle. With a pretzel and beer cheddar sauce. Super good. Then the pandemic. Did not go for 3 years,? Last summer we ordered to go. 2 cheddar wurst and a pretzel. The wurst were overcooked, dried out, like rewarmed leftovers. Wrote an email and received no response. So today we thought, hey its 4th of July let's try again Same thing overcooked, dried out, flavorless, no. Cheese. Also? Beer was warm. Yes they refunded our food. But? Service is friendly and attentive yet not overbearing . Social distancing is respected and everyone was wearing masks . Beer selection was good! And the food was pretty damn yummy, the pulled pork sandwich was perfect. Great pork, not at all loaded down with barbecue sauce. I love that Bellingham has a spot like this downtown. Weather in the PNW make a biz like this a gamble, but it's paid off as a popular spot for students and locals. We love it because, well, pretzels. And sports. And dogs. And beer. That combination is a pretty big win for most. To avoid confusion, know this: Order from the window. Yup! Order your food, beers and more from the window unless you are specifically told you have a server. It gets SLAMMED here during games and on weekend nights and the line can be long at said window but that's the fastest way to get a beer in hand because everyone here is pulling double duty (cooking, beers, serving, washing, etc). Friendly staff, even if things are coming out slow, and all the eats are all mostly cooked on their wood fired oven. Family friendly (only till 9pm, then clear out for the college kids) and there are some games in back too. A spot like this would do well in San Diego. The square footage/Real Estate would be tough to come by, but the sunshine and local brews might be a good match! Did not eat here, just drank but this place is cool. When we originally stopped by there was a local band and a cover charge and it was packed! We didn't really feel like paying a cover so we decided to head back later. It was still a popping spot but had definitely died down quite a bit. A large movie was playing from a projector, cute college girls were everywhere, beer was flowing, large games were being played. Honestly it was a great place to come and just chill and people watch. I was ordering 1l beers, I sat around with an empty 1l beer mug praying to the beer gods that our server would care to check on us, but those bastards ignored us. The manager was a complete asshole . He was on a straight power trip . Made me feel uncomfortable and didn't even want to be there . He was rude and not hospitable in any way . He treated his staff horribly , and was so Unprofessional . I am no longer coming in to this place as he just ruined it for me . Never been treated that way . Owners , fire this guy . I never really seen him before but he's a tall guy with glasses which I believe he was the manager the way he was acting . Demote him or get rid of him . If I continue to see him working I am never going there again . Well they said it couldn't be done, but it happened: Das Schweinhaus, Bellingham's ONLY outdoor-only restaurant that doesn't close in the winter - managed to survive its first cold season and is still thriving now that warmer weather is upon us! I'll be the first to confess I did not visit during the winter, but whenever I drove by there were lots of people there (it probably helps that they added a covered area - with portable heaters). But I did go visit on a particularly warm spring day last week, and I was pleasantly surprised to find that not only were they still doing well, they have added some DARK beers to the menu, too! Thank you, thank you Schweinhaus, from all of us dark beer fans! Oh and the food is good, too. The weiners are amazingly delicious, and served bun-free with yummy sauerkraut and delicious mustard. read more

Really great beer garden in Bellingham with lots of open space. We got some beers and hard seltzers and ordered some food (pretzel with bratwurst). Probably won't get hard seltzer again if I come back though as the beers my buddies had were much better. I gotta say, the bratwurst is better than most of the ones I've had in Leavenworth and the sauerkraut is well made and easy to eat. I loved their variety of mustards which kept each bite fun. On the plus side, they are dog friendly, wish they were more human friendly. We couldn't order (or were dissuaded from ordering) food because there would be a 45 min wait because somehow the kitchen was backed up on at 4:00 on a Saturday. This was weird because there were not a lot of customers. And we noticed that the ones who did order food were not waiting 45 minutes for food - this was just weird. The beer was good. They absolutely were blasting the place with really crappy country-western music. It is not that I don't like CW - there is a lot I like but this was all "cold margaritas, hot senoritas" type music. It is really obvious when the staff are playing the music for themselves and not the customers. Really tacky. No servers or service to speak of. Will not be coming back. read more

I had a good-sized mug of the sour they had on draft for about the same price as a small glass would have cost elsewhere. So I had two, of course. Plus an order of fries. If there was an option to give this place a 3.5 star rating, I would have, so instead I gave them the higher rate. This is a nice introduction to German food, but it certainly doesn't offer a wide variety of what you could find on a typical menu. But this isn't a typical place. I love the whole idea of outdoor seating no matter what the weather is like. I like the rustic feel, the down-to-earth atmosphere, the getting back to basics of just eating in a non-upscale setting. I'm not sure though if I liked the idea of using a port-a-potty as my getaway to do my business, or the whole, "find your utensils in some jar, and hope they are clean" kind of setting (I had to really scrounge around for a clean fork). But other than the few dislikes, I did find the sausage that I had (the curry sausage), to be amazing. The potatoes were nice and crispy on the outside and just the perfect softness on the inside. And the sauerkraut? Yum! I also liked the variety of mustards provided. The poutine wasn't up to par - chili could have been hotter, and there could have been more curds, but again, you can't compete with the neighbors to the north of us. My only complaint is that there wasn't enough of anything for the price of the plate. And for the beer lover, or just the beer enthusiast, they do offer a nice varied selection of your usual and unusual hops. Well-behaved dogs are welcomed; well-behaved kids are as well. The environment is hip and the music is quiet enough so that you can talk to your group members. All of the seating is outdoors and you go up to place the order. The servers then bring the food or drinks to your table. Since I do not drink, I ordered a hummus platter and if that is an indication of the quality of other food here, I would say this place is pretty darn good. read more
