The Schweinhaus has evolved from an open space, optimized only for sunny days, to an open space with a suitably functional roof, and multiple large TV screens. Now you don't get wet when it rains, and they drag out those tall heaters if (when) it gets cold. If you're a hardy Northwesterner (we know you're not from here if you own an umbrella), it comes as close as Bellingham has to a year-round outdoor beer drinking venue. The brew menu leans toward the lighter (i.e.: German) side of things, but with 12 taps, plus wine and cider (as well as some canned beers, for you non-draft patrons), you should always be able to find something you like here. I have been here twice now and I have to say it is pretty awesome! The pretzels are amazing and a must have with your beer! Staff is very friendly and always ready to give you a suggestion if you are unsure of what to order. They are dog friendly which is awesome. I mean what is not to love beer, pretzels, sausage and I can bring my dog?! My only main issue is that they only have an outhouse for the bathrooms. But they are kept well stocked and pretty clean. Last time I was there I got their poutine. The potatoes were raw and everything was cold which was disappointing. I would have sent it back but it was very busy and I could not find a waitress. But it was really busy and I didn't care that much. I will try again next time! read more

This was a real gem. I didn't really stumble across the place... I did have it bookmarked but when our original place we wanted to eat at wasn't open( Not open on a Saturday? That makes no sense.) we decided to give Schweinhaus Biergarten a try. We wanted to eat something on the lighter side and weren't sure if German food was the best fit for that but what we wound up getting didn't leave us overfilled in the hot summer sun. All of the seating is outside and there is plenty of it which is good. The place seems fairly popular but at the same time there was plenty of space to kick back and relax. We did want a shady place to sit which was a little bit harder to do but we found just such a spot with not a whole lot of problems. Steve and I split a beer out of Germany, a grapefruit hefeweizen which was absolutely fantastic. I ordered a bratwurst plate along with sauerkraut and fries (German style) and absolutely loved it. With my plate there were three types of mustards that came with my brat... all of which proved to be extremely enjoyable. So even though Schweinhaus was not exactly what we wanted for lunch Steve and I both left very satisfied customers with the food and beer that we did have here. read more

We've book looking at this place for a while but never stopped by. It's everything i thought it would be. Brats, pretzels, huge beer list and bottled sodas. I ordered the #2 plate with a cheddar brat, soft pretzel, sour kraut and three mustards. My boyfriend ordered the same but with a Cajun brat. The cheddar brat was good but the Cajun bratwurst was really good! As was the honey mustard. If they had cheddar sauce for my pretzel I would be in heaven! I will be back to try the jojos. read more

First timers in Bellingham! I went with my girlfriend and her parents after checking out several places in town for food that were more expensive. I had the #2 plate with the curry wurst. It was tasty with a bed of sauerkraut, pretzel, and 3 mustards on the side. My girlfriend had the Cheddarwurst which could have had more cheese in it. The pretzel was good but not my favorite. I think it was dried out and overcooked. It was a nice outdoor atmosphere for a summer night. Our waitress could have been better. This place is Bellingham in a nutshell. I love the atmosphere with long, community tables and the brats being cooked up on a wood-fire grill converted from an old pick-up truck. I love their brat plates and their pretzels, their cheddar and curry brats being my two favorites. Service needs to be stepped up; the line to order here gets outrageous though the wait for food isn't too bad since they keep their menu pretty simple. Prices are a littleeee high, but I love the rotating drafts. Nothing beats a game of cornhole with your friends and a giant beer on a sunny day in Bellingham, which is why this place is one of my favorites, especially since I can get a bite to eat, too! read more

We were seated had a beer and food which was excellent, but after finishing our beers, waited ten minutes, got up and asked for our check then waited another 25 minutes before our server came to clear our glasses at which point I expressed that we had waited 35 minutes to be checked on and get our check. I was offered my bill with no tip. The proper response would have been to discount some or all of the check. I'm a big fan of the place but this type of service is unacceptable. If I'm waiting longer for my check than it takes me to be served and finish my food and beer, there's a major issue. read more

What a cool place!! I would love to come back here! Mostly open area with 2 TVs and a giant food truck built in that puts out sausages + pretzels. They do have a vegetarian sausage. Dishes ranged from $8-$12 I think with the pretzel at $4.25. Mostly German style beers but I did enjoy my Citra IPA. Also, 3 sizes of beer to choose from. The only thing that kind of sucks about Schweinhaus is that since it's completely outdoors, there is only Porta Potties. This past time when I was so desperate I HAD to use one, SOMEONE WALKED IN ON ME AS I WAS PULLING UP MY PANTS. WHAT. WHY. Delicious! I've only been here in the summertime, but I understand that this outdoor restaurant is open in the winter, too, with propane patio heaters. I had the Nuerenberger wurst with potatoes and sauerkraut, with three different mustards that were unique and yummy. I grew up eating German food, so I know! An excellent place to have a liter of beer and a bratwurst in the sun. To begin, they have a great tap selection, and extremely reasonable prices on beer. If you like to enjoy your bier by the litre then look no further. Additionally, they also offer a wonderful selection of German inspired food cooked in a wood fired hearth. Sausages, potatoes, kraut, pretzels; everything you'd expect basically. And done very well to boot. To top it all off they offer all of this with exceptional customer service. Very friendly and helpful staff. I got a sausage that was cooked a bit dark for my liking and within a few minutes of mentioning it to a waitress I was served with an entirely new plate of food (even though I may have had dug into my delicious pretzel a bit already) at obviously no charge. Very surprised as I very very rarely send food back and always expect the worst reaction. They could not have been any more professional. And the replacement food was fantastic! 9.5/10 eat and drink here if you value your mouth, wallet, and free time at all because it will satisfy all three. read more

A solid Bavarian Themed outdoor beer garden and brathaus. It can get pretty crowded on game nights and summer weekends, but stays open pretty much year round. A couple things are 3 stars however. Slow service. I get it, I really do. But it can be a bit beyond the patience of people who are dying for beers, pretzels and brats to wait 20+ mins for their food. Bathrooms are a little icky. Also, I understand it's an outdoor gig, I just dislike portapotties and beer mixed up. Parking can take 8 million years. Being on a busy corner of many one ways, give yourself extra time to find a spot and walk. They've been out of a couple beers twice when I've gone. For a picky beer drinker, sometimes that's a bit of a bummer. Overall, I like the place, I think it's a fun vibe, and I rate it a warm 3.5 stars. Excellent pretzels. read more

The first time I came here I was stoked! The beer sizes are cool and go from normal pint sized, to huge, to massive. They've got a rotating tap with some great selections. I got a superb raspberry cider on my first visit. The food here is awful though. The international poutine is a small plate of like 10 pre-frozen potato wedges with nacho cheese and a few green onions. Not at all worth $8. Absolutely an insult to actual poutine and potatoes in general. The second visit was chaotic. They decided to do table service instead of window ordering and we waited about 20 minutes to get acknowledged while folks who came in after us were served sooner. We weren't the only ones this happened to either. I watched two other patrons have to get up and find their waiters. It's a beer garden. It's not supposed to have table service. While the beer selection gets a B, the overall atmosphere gets a C-. There's always toddlers running around here too, and while it's cute, I always feel guilty gettin' my drank on around toddlers. I'll give it one more chance for the rotating tap and the ability to sit outdoors, but the rest of this place is pretty bad. read more

I work on State St. and am a huge soccer fan, so when this venue finally converted from a parking lot/coffee stand to an outdoor Bavarian-style beer garden with large TVs DURING the World Cup on one of the sunniest summers in Bellingham that I can recall (I've lived here 15 years), needless to say I was excited. I sit in an air-conditioned office all day, so eating my lunch + watching soccer + drinking good beer + getting some rays + close to work = happiness! I watched a few games with my friends in the glaring sun (annoying but not insurmountable) and enjoyed a full liter of Kolsh or Lager. It's a great way to serve the delicious German style biers, but be warned - that much beer won't stay cold out there for long! I was patient about the food and the service the first few days while they worked out the kinks during the very busy World Cup rush which they inherited from the Copper Hog (the go-to soccer spot). I've been back during quieter times, and I have to say nothing annoys me like slow service. Unfortunately, it's inherent in their design. A server can't offer a patron a taster of Gose and give him a half minute to consider the aroma while asking you on the side "What can I get you?" Pouring and talking, balancing multiple orders - that's what good bartenders do. A single-serve window rules this out completely. It's just a very bad bottleneck for what would otherwise be an interesting & successful approach to outdoor dining and beer drinking. There are other options for this in downtown Bellingham for the savvy patron so they (i.e. Aaron Matson) need to be smarter about workflow. It's all fine & good to hire cute friendly girls, but cleavage alone won't coax dollars out of my pocket. You can put a big ugly man in the booth for all I care. If I don't have to stand in line for a beer, I will tip his hairy ass and walk away with a frothy smile. read more

This place rotates beer very frequently, which is awesome. They do have some great beers, but it doesn't seem like you can get anything here you can't have all over town. I love love love their cheddar brat. They recently changed their potatoes and they are not as good as before. Their pretzel is awesome!! If they have it. The last two times I have been here they were out. Total bummer! They have some awesome lawn games; ladder ball, cornhole, and lawn jenga. You have to play right next to the port-o-potties though. Which is the only form of facilities they have. So, if you are going to play games and eat, wait to eat until after you are done. No way to wash your hands. This place is also all outside. Kid friendly and dog friendly. Overall? It is a great place to day drink when the weather is nice. read more

Schweinhaus is very cool! I love the hipster atmosphere and the chill vibe they offer! Went for a drink with some friends and got to sit outside in front of a cool gas fire and noticed in the back there were some lawn games like cornhole, so this would be a great date night or night out with a group! They play all like 90's throwbacks which I loved! The beer is very reasonably priced for the quality and variety they offer! The whole place feels very clean as well. Also if you're a dog lover this is the place to be. I would have given it 5 stars except I paid $7 for a pretzel with cheese, that was very good but felt kind of pricey considering I paid less for a half liter of huckleberry cider, which highly recommend. The cider had a slight tartness to it that felt refreshing without making me feel super full. Especially having lived in Germany I loved the HB Muchen steins and constant soccer game playing in the background, it brought me back for a bit which was nice! I have come here to watch football games many times. It is definitely one of the best places to watch sports in Bellingham, since they have large screens. The beer selection and prices are excellent. The main drawback is that this semi-outdoor bar only has portable restrooms. One night while I was there, I attempted use one. It was pitch black inside the portable toilet, so i decided to use my phone's flashlight. What I saw was simply frightening. I decided to use a restroom at a nearby bar. The bar is dog-friendly, but unfortunately, my fiance was bitten by a dog there once. He was not attempting to pet the dog or anything, the dog just spontaneously bit him during a Seahawks game. My guess is that the dog was stressed out by the people shouting, and it was probably poor judgement by the owner. I am totally down with the limited food menu, mostly comprised of sausages. The wait times for food can be long though. I would love to see this bar improve its service times and restroom situation if possible. read more

This place just opened. Or maybe I am a little slow. This is a collaboration with The Copper Hog, and it appears to be half baked. Service is SUPER slow. One window for beer (that's "one-not-at-your-table" server) and longer for overpriced food from the food truck (on-premises). Seating is all outside, picnic tables, some under umbrellas, some not. I think this place has "tons" of potential. But they're not there yet. On a sunny day you can't go wrong. Makes me wonder what they'll do on a "less than" sunny day? Hopefully Schweinhaus Biergarten will get better...I'll keep coming to check. read more
