We both ordered the viet local draft beer Saigon lager that suits perfectly well with crispy spring rolls, I was told by a friend that it is best to eat the roll by wrapping it with lettuce and few mint leaves put chili, hoisin and sriracha sauce and dunk it to Nuoc Cham (dipping sauce), it's an explosion of flavors! For our entree, we both went to grilled pork chop with different serving. Mine was served with jasmine rice and the other was Pho, we both enjoyed our dishes and found it very flavorful, the broth in pho really is the star of the night. She had voted Hello Saigon the best. We started by sharing a summer roll. Their version comes with shrimp which is our preference. It was perfectly and tightly wrapped. The outside was chewy but not gluey like some. They gave us each an individual dish of peanut sauce. The sauce was thick -- not watered down -- and a perfect accompaniment. I tried their regular lemonade. It was light and refreshing. A bit sweet but not cloyingly so. Then we had banh mi sandwiches. They were huge. My husband had their ham and pate. I tried their steak. Both came with the traditional sliced marinated cucumbers and carrots and cilantro. They don't put jalapeños on them here. I liked mine, but took off the cooked onions that I hadn't expected. What made the sandwiches great was the French bread they were on. Real crusty Baguettes. Not those imitation hoagie rolls. And so large, we struggled to finish them. Though do pay attention to the noodle types, not every option comes with the typical thin and flat rice noodle; for the meaty / fusion options some come with a round, thicker rice noodle. Drinks (5/5) a bit on the pricier side for the odd drinks but they were totally worth it - the mango smoothie had hints of coconut and was just the right sweetness and fruitiness. We came in on a Sunday afternoon and were seated immediately. Plenty of seating inside with modernized decor. I ordered the beef short rib pho, which is only on the special menu. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I was definitely pleasantly surprised. The short rib is absolutely massive and only rivaled in size by bbq ribs I've had in the south. I'd recommend using the provided fork and knife and to cut it into smaller pieces and then adding it back. The beef didn't taste seasoned, so I'd recommend dipping it in the hoisin sauce for additional salty flavor. As I tried to lift the rib to get a better look, the meat slid right off. (fall off the bone am I right?) Not your traditional bowl of pho since it uses short rib meat and also has broccoli?, but I liked it nonetheless. Service here was quick. A friend and I came in on a Saturday night at around 7. The place was pretty empty, but it was also MDW, so maybe that was the reason why. To start, we ordered the Vietnamese pancake with pork and shrimp. I wasn't a huge fan of this because I thought it was a bit dry. Maybe they overfried it? My friend seemed to like it though. For entrees, we both got the spring rolls over vermicelli and we really enjoyed it. This dish is usually my go-to order whenever I go to a Viet spot. While it's not the best, it was still pretty darn good. The menu items are slightly more expensive ($1-$2) than the Chinatown or Brooklyn spots, but you can't really compare, given its location. I've tried a lot of pho in my life, and the tastiest I've found to be from the shabby metal carts in the middle of the night on the streets of Hanoi where you sit on tiny plastic chairs with folding tables, a bottle of red sauce, a bowl full of tiny Cam sành {King Orange} and Thai basil, and use 50 napkins that end up getting swept on the floor for cleaning later. It's this venue with it's three buckets of ascending cleanliness that I prefer to eat from. Hello Saigon I heard, is never too crowded, and today was no different. I was excited to see genuine Vietnamese people working here, and was recommended the spare rib special pho, and the Dac Biet. My friend and I got one of each to try. The Spare Rib pho broth was legit - I appreciated that it had the heartiness that you expect, but a sweetness from the spare rib. I was a bit disappointed that the Dac Biet pho didn't have the same aroma/mouthiness to it, but by no means is it inferior to other pho's - it just wasn't as good as the Spare Rib. While I liked the broth of the Spare RIb better, the meat had that soupy quality to it - falling right off the bone but a bit flavourless after being boiled for so long. The Dac Biet though, was perfect in terms of fixings. Overall, solid pho place - I heard the chicken {pho ga} is the one to get, so I'll come back to try that sometime. read more

I am so happy to see a competing Vietnamese restaurant open up in Greenwich! Saigon Shack has held monopoly power for too long (spoken like a true MBA student). Price wise, Saigon Shack has Hello Saigon beat, but in terms of the ambiance and general comfort while dining, Hello Saigon wins by a long shot. They are currently giving out a lot of discounts but with a lot of criteria. I couldn't even wrap my head around the 30% off during happy hour but only if you pay in cash and only off a specific menu, or 25% off with yelp check in but only off of the general menu. It was confusing and my only reason for a 4 star rating. I ended up not getting any of these deals, but now I realize that I could have used my 20% discount with student ID. In terms of entrees, they offer a great selection of phos, banh mis, and vermicelli bowls. They differ from a lot of Vietnamese places in that they have a pretty decent vegetarian selection as well. I ended up ordering the short rib pho special and a grilled chicken and fried egg banh mi to go. Both were excellent. I must commend them on how beautifully done the short rib was. It was falling off the bone and so tender. I couldn't decide what to eat first - the noodles, the soup, or the short rib!! The banh mi was also tasty, although I had it by the time it was already cold. I do wish it had a bit more filling though - near each end, all I had was baguette left! In eternal search of the best cha gio in NYC, I was curious about Hello Saigon. I've had Saigon Shack around the corner, which wasn't bad. The new mural was lovely. It was aesthetically pleasing across from the bar. They took care to ensure the cho gio (fried spring roll) packaging was open inside the bag to keep the skin from steaming itself and getting soggy. The bo lac cubes were alright. High quality steak, could use a little more sear, marinade,or sauce to compliment it. But those Cha Gio. Most are too much pork and not enough of the other stuff. These were made proper with rice paper, small like spring rolls (4 to an order), and hands down the most succulent in the city. Also, their menu is incredibly diverse. Most places here have pho or sandwiches or bun vermicelli, max 2 of those 3 items and some summer rolls or juice. This menu is huge. Will be back ASAP read more
