I first visited Hello Em when they opened a few years ago, and unfortunately, my experience with the service felt very similar this time around. The coconut water matcha was absolutely delicious. It was refreshing, flavorful, and easily the highlight of my visit. The café itself is also very cute and culturally immersive, with a thoughtful Vietnamese identity that I genuinely appreciate as someone who is Vietnamese. That said, the baristas gave off a noticeably unfriendly and slightly dismissive vibe. I understand that some cafés lean into the aloof, hipster-barista atmosphere, but this felt unnecessary. It is still a coffee shop, and a little warmth would make the experience much more welcoming. I am still giving Hello Em four out of five stars because the drink was fantastic and the space is beautiful. What a beautiful and cool place to be. There is some street parking around the area and a decent amount of seating inside. It's bright, cozy, and cool inside. There is a community space that you can borrow and book out! There's a little store front in the back that you can get some cool and unique things. The combination is unique and enjoyable, especially if you like dessert-style coffee drinks. Cà Phê Brûlée - A torched egg coffee that I highly recommend ordering hot. Be sure to grab a spoon, you'll need it to crack the caramelized egg layer and mix it in. Drinking it straight through a straw means you'll miss the brulee flavor entirely. They had a really intriguing menu, and the inside was also nicely decorated, displaying some rustic aspects you might see if you were actually in Vietnam. I've been here twice before during the height of the pandemic around 2021 when this place first opened, and came back 4 years later just to have their coffee. This is on a Monday morning close to 10am, and even till now it's still close to an area where street parking is challenging and the surrounding area somewhat sketchy even when it's bright outside. Inside is relatively casual, with the wall displaying facts of Vietnam and tables and books strewn about. Even on a Monday morning there's plenty of people and people came in nonstop despite the place being empty when I walked in. Back then, I used to get their Ca Phe Trung (egg coffee) and Xuc Xich (hot dog banh mi) as a pair, but for this visit I only got the former. It has a very strong and bitter taste at the bottom while still being perfectly sweet with the egg creme on top especially after stirring everything together. It also has more of a salted cheese foam kind of taste, which is already something I love. All of this was just $8 flat on my end, which is pretty standard for coffees I've gotten before. Love that there's a history "stories of little Saigon" past, present and future wall. The decor is great. Menu items are weird af tho, but my parents are Viet-Americans who came in 1979-82 so we might not be used to the new popular drinks in viet nam. From the street, I would have never noticed this cafe tucked away near some grocery stores I used to frequent, if I didn't have this bookmarked. Some friends recommended it after their last visit to Seattle, and I was craving some of the delightful drinks I had during my last trip to Saigon. The interior is decorated with lanterns, a moped, and other relics reminiscent of Vietnam. There's great communal seating, and you can tell they care deeply about their community as they have a wall telling the history of the neighborhood and also have a table with lots of flyers to educate the locals of important happenings. There were 3 croissants to choose from and I ordered the pandan one, which ended up being a regular croissant that they slice open and put some spread on. It was good but reallllly rich (tasted like a lot of butter in the spread) and it was quite sweet. I had a hard time picking between all the drinks, but I remember loving the coconut coffees and egg coffees in Saigon. I picked the coconut one and it ended up being quite different than the ones I was used to - a bit more runny and less creamy. It also had a lot of dried coconut chunks on top that wasn't crisp and made it hard to drink. I'd recommend ordering it without the coco chips or having it on the side! Usually I get coconut coffee or egg coffee but I'll gravitate towards something different that I normally don't see at other cafes. I don't see banana coffee often and decided to order that hot. You have to be a banana lover to like this. It's one of the better banana coffee that I've had because it wasn't that strong in syrup and had more coffee ratio. It was topped with a banana chip and peanuts. Food: Bánh mì nem nướng ($9.50) - creamy pressed bánh mì like a panini. The nem was thick like spam, the sauce was a lemongrass mayo. 10/10 Pate croissant w egg ($8). - had a creamy sweet flavor. A cute hidden gem indeed! We popped in head of ECCC and very much enjoyed our coffees, rice crispy, and banh mi! We were a bit sad that the mochi clouds weren't available yet but the coffee was good enough that we'd pop in again next time we're int he area. I had a hot Cà phê brûlée which was $6.50 for 8oz and it was not a good experience. I understand that you're supposed to stir it but found that near impossible since the cup was overfull. The egg cream was extremely sweet, the coffee was extremely bitter, and I felt like I was slowly eating the plastic off the degradable straw which was melting throughout. Maybe I didn't like it because I didn't stir it enough or coffee is not to my taste. This being said, my entire experience here left a sour taste in my mouth. First of all, the service was poor. They did not seem to care about their work or the customers and did not make any effort to try and make me feel welcome. Secondly, there were too many people inside and while I appreciate communal seating, I found the chairs too close for comfort and the tables far too limited. It was an uncomfortable dining experience. Lastly, none of the reviews I've seen have mentioned that this cafe is on one of the least safe and walkable streets of the city. This is not within their control, but added to my desire to leave. There is also an unspoken credit card surcharge. When I visit Seattle, I always drop by this place on my way back home to Portland since I'm headed in this direction and it's kind of on the edge of the International district. It's a nice environment, almost like a community space with the historical displays. The pressed banh mi sandwiches is a nice change from regular French rolls. It's like a Vietnamese panini. All their Vietnamese coffee drinks are creative but since I don't get to come too often, I always end up getting the signature creme brulee egg coffee because I can't get there any where else. The only nitpicky note is that they don't have any wooden stirrers to help to blend the egg cream throughout the coffee. They just have plastic straws and plastic spoons, which feels weird using for a hot drink. Still, I find this place to be fun and unique, and servers always nice and efficient. read more
