So many veggies.

I see it it's been five years since I reviewed Hello Bistro, which remains one of my go-to lunch spots. Reading my previous review, it's about time for an update. The main update is the kiosk-centered ordering system. You can still go and place your order at the counter if the kiosk is something you can't deal with for some reason, but 90% or more of people go through the kiosk which is fast and convenient. It allows you to choose from every single option on the salad bar if you are customizing a salad. I recently reviewed another place and critiqued that their kiosk system did not allow you enough possibility for customization; this system is just about infinite, with the ability to add or remove items from their creations, or make your own exactly how you want it, down to choosing how much dressing you want. It's pretty slick. You then grab a pager, input which pager number you have and your pager will buzz when your salad is ready. They still have their other menu items like burgers and fries as well, but a custom salad is my go-to here. I pay around $13 for that salad which accounts for the addition of avocado and it's absolutely huge, enough for two portions unless you are the hungriest of hungry. There is space to dine in if you like but they do a pretty robust to-go business here. Efficient, friendly and accurate.

Had a great experience which is pretty normal for Hello Bistros (I always have a great experience it seems!) I went at lunch time and expected to wait awhile for my salad and it actually came out pretty quick! I got a salad and fries and they were great! There weren't any pagers when I ordered so they walked around looking for me. There weren't many tables left, but that's expected for lunch time downtown.

Oh man.......well, I love the concept. Easy process ordering food at the self-help kiosks. You then pick a buzzer, enter the number of it upon check-out and your buzzer goes off when your bowl is ready. Except.....they seriously suck at getting the ingredients right. I think they probably put too much of something in the bowl they made before mine so they just left it there and didn't bother to add the rest of what I had ordered. I was missing beets, banana peppers, bacon, and mushrooms. Oh wait- I found ONE mushroom in there. Then they also added broccoli (which I really don't like raw) and soy beans, which I also don't really care for. They got some of the ingredients right and they put the chicken on, so they tried (I guess?) And I know I picked up the correct order on the counter, because the chit-sheet was taped to the top of my bowl with a detail of what it was supposed to contain. I mean, it still tasted decent, but I wonder what would happen if someone with a food allergy got an order as messed up as mine?

Burned bacon Burger with bacon and cheese

The store isn't busy but food took a while. Fries were COLD & burger and bacon was burnt. I usually love their fries and I ordered a salad.

As far as this particular downtown location, it's probably the worst or next to the worst location for an otherwise great local chain. The usually indifferent service, as well as the dirty feel provide a contrast to the great menu offerings of the Hello Bistro chain. This restaurant offers a tasty, affordable selection of freshly made burgers, sandwiches and excellent salads. Great Item selections for the salads, and the fact that they will chop your greens however you like it, makes it even easier to eat some good kale or spinach.

I want to start by saying that I love salads and like other Hello Bistros however, this specific location, whether it be that they are understaffed and getting absolutely killed or they need better management, needs to step up their game. Every time for the past at least 5 times that I have been there it has been a complete mess. Vegetable toppings mixed with other toppings, food smushed into the cutting boards, food all over the ground and a perished scent lingering in the air. I was willing to look past this since this location is in market square and I know how busy they are because I pass by them almost daily around lunch but the pictures I took and the reason that I am writing this review is because these were taken at 6!! Plenty of time to get cleaned up IMO. Sending caution to all the folks with allergies as the toppings mix!

Dirty Assembly Line

I've been to Hello Bistro a few times, the 1st location I visited was in Oakland. Simple, clean food, with a build your own variety. I can't say the same for this location in downtown Pittsburgh. Yes, the food and the concept was the same. But this place was a mess even the employees looked sloppy and handled the orders like a public school lunch lady. And nobody wore a belt or maybe it was "show your plumber's crack while you make a salad" day. Trash was overflowing and debris were all over the floor from the ordering line to the exit. Even worse, the employees clearly saw this and just didn't care. Bistro is that last thing I would think of after visiting this location.

Oh Eat 'n Park you clever devil, you. I've been a fan of the company's HB chain since they began opening all over the area a couple of years back. Elaine from Seinfeld can take her big salad and keep moving. These salads are big...and fresh. I love the bowls and lids to go. Seriously I do. However I love what's in the bowls even more. You can choose from custom made salads or an array of salads on the menu. You can mix up their salads however you like. These are the most glorious of salad bars...behold!

Not very good. Unsure where most of the ingredients are....
Super D.

I ordered a chicken ranch salad and was terribly disappointed. Bland, everything is chopped up so small you can barely differentiate the ingredients. The salad just tasted cold. I think I found one piece of egg. It really boiled down to being just a cheap, bland, salad that I could barely eat. It was not a satisfying salad at all. I didn't even eat it. The pictures online are a lie.

The take out pick up area.

Lots of seating, fresh food (can speak to Quinoavacado salad), healthy options, friendly and well staffed employees, under $10 lunch, cool music, modern/simple ambiance. All my check boxes for a good lunch experience. A great, welcomed restaurant addition to the cool, healthy eating options many of us in downtown Pittsburgh are happy to see. I'm glad you are here!

It's titled Avacado Burger - c'mon - one slice of avacado?! It should actually be called the salty burger because that's all I taste, salt. Ew.

I wouldn't really call this a supper club to be honest but the place definitely carries a house music bar vibe and the back bar area and seating is very dimly lit, perfect for cozying up and enjoying a drink late night. The ladies' room was so dark, I mistook it for a storage area because I could only make out a white ladder in the corner that was being used as cute shelving. The place is seat yourself. Our waiter was not super friendly and didn't offer to give us napkins or anything when our wobbly table caused our drinks to splash all over the place. The cook served our chicken with a big smile and happy interaction and we really loved his personality. The bartender also stopped by to bus our table and he was very pleasant as well. We enjoyed the perfectly fried small plate cauliflower with the plum sauce and the fried cheese/garlic wonton bites with the sriracha mayo spicy dipping sauce. The fried chicken breast on the large plate was slightly overcooked with a maple gochuchang sauce that was very bland. We were so thankful that the large plate fried chicken came with a side salad to offer some respite from the heaviness of the fried dishes. It would have been great to have some side acidic or fresh vegetable options like Kimchi or something. Maybe we tried the wrong dishes and there are other not fried things that are delicious? The dirty martini cocktail was just so-so, not really much flavor at all, but the mojito was very good and refreshing. It's probably a good late-night place for a bite and drink.

BEST PITTSBURGH WING…read more We were absolutely not expecting this and still can't believe it. We didn't have major expectations but hoped it would be at least a top 5 wing and average meal. It was beyond that The French onion soup we saw online and everyone seemed to enjoy that. We're whores for it so had to get. I like mine a tad bit salty which this was and PACKED with onion chunks and breaded leeks on top. It was impossible to get a spoon fully without any inclusions. My new favorite The Tavern Burger. I'm coming fresh off 9 years without 5 Guys (elite) and this rocked me harder than that. This isn't a stupid smash burger. We got a juicy COOKED PERFECT RARE 8oz patty, topped with sautéed onions, and bacon that isn't crisped to smithereens. I like my bacon medium rare and that's exactly what I got. Then covered in one of the craziest sauces I have ever had, their gorgonzola cream. I could drink that by the gallon The wings.... I have never had a wing itself cooked more perfect in my life. The smoke and meatiness on them was so nailed that I could get 2 dozen plain and still have the same reaction. We got the Buffalo Garlic and Dry Cajun Ranch. These wings don't need drenched in sauce by any means or it would honestly ruin it. The buffalo doesn't ned to be creamy either. Perfect amount of sauce to cheese ration. The dry cajun ranch was a fucking knockout. For how great the wing is I would love to see more dry season options with them Cam got a Tavern Dip. I hate dips. I loved the shaved ribeye on it and horseradish, but I have never been an Au Jus man. Would 100000% eat it without the au jus Then the fries. Always team psoriasis through and through. Not sure if I'm coming off the Five Guys high but their cajun boardwalk style are even better. Get some spicy honey aioli to dip them in. Truly just shocked at how amazing this place is. Right over the bridge and cannot recommend enough going here before a game and walking over. Great spot right before, after and during sports. Very high Pittsburgh atmosphere going on I will be back so many times and absolutely worth going Downtown for

All of this is worth it! Everything is good here, but the ice cream we had on our last visit was exceptional. I was so full, but I would have eaten a second scoop. If ice cream is on the menu, get it. They use a dense cashew cream, which is imo the best base for vegan ice cream. We got on the list and waited about 35 minutes for a spot at the bar. The restaurant itself has a casual Italian American vibe, with a small bar in the front and a dining area on the side. So happy we got a spot there because our bartender/server Nami was one of the best service experiences I've ever had. She asked us if we had been there before, gave us the rundown on the handmade pasta, what they're known for, and more. She mentioned the gnocchi being their top seller, but I'm not the biggest fan. However, the girl next to me got the gnocchi and meatballs, so snuck a pic of that just for sharing. They are HUGE and puffy and might make me change my mind about gnocchi. Anyway, Nami was so fun and attentive without being overbearing, and the place was busy as hell. She even made sure we had some cookies to take home when we declined dessert, telling us she didn't want us to have any regrets. Spoiler, the cookies totally hit the spot later in our hotel when we needed a little sweet before bed. Ok, onto the food. Nami brought us the fluffiest, most beautiful foccacia bread with olive oil and balsamic vinegar for dipping to start. We ordered the stuffed mushrooms, which were cooked to perfection, filled with this decadent mushroom mousse and then surrounded by a bright and flavor tomato onion jam that we kept scooping up with everything we could find. For our entree we shared the Salsiccia e Cavolo - which is fusilli, sweet sausage, braise cabbage, onions, cream, nutmeg and parmesan. What a perfect, cozy, delicious pasta for a fall night. It was creamy, flavorful, pasta was perfectly cooked. We took the leftovers back with us and it also reheated beautifully with a bit of water over the stove, so we got to enjoy it twice. Highly recommend a dinner here if you can get a table/spot at the bar, did not disappoint. If I'm ever back in Pittsburgh, I'll be back to give the gnocchi and meatballs a try.

I ordered the meatball sub- it was delicious. Three massive meatballs on warm crispy bread and three cheeses. It was absolutely delicious. I ate my meatball sandwich with a knife and fork, because it knew I'd make a mess if I'd attempted otherwise; I was very pleased with the portions.
