Great spot for lunch takeout on Pitt campus. Roots has done a good job filling the fast casual niche with some healthy feeling, largely vegetarian options. Most bowls are rice, greens, and/or beans based with various vegetables for toppings. Heartier than a salad but healthier than Chipotle. I've gotten lunch there a few times and have always been satisfied. My favorite bowl is El Jefe, which comes with rice, kale, black beans, corn, red onion, avocado, and a protein topping (I like the miso tofu but you can also get chicken). The bowl also comes with cilantro/lime sauce, which I do not get because it's very salty. That's my one complaint about Roots - despite their healthy ingredients, their bowls can get quite saucy and salty if you go with the default options. I came in to try the limited time Garu bowl for lunch. The place itself is nice, it's always clean and I've never had any issues with the staff while ordering. The bowl was good but I was a little disappointed in the portion. Roots is a little bit more expensive than other similar options but I usually don't mind as they often give me a very full bowl, but that wasn't the case with the Gary bowl. It was less full than the bowls I usually get along with being very heavy on the rice and not too much chicken or even the kale. Favorite bowl place in Pittsburgh (and ever)!! Better than sweetgreen or cava imo. It's my go-to when I need a quick & healthy but still filling & flavorful meal. The bowls here are customizable (they have a huge set menu too and all of them are amazing) and each bowl easily lasts two meals. My fav things to get in my custom bowls are the chicken or tofu, pita chips, sweet potatoes, roasted broccoli, & the cheddar. Their purple roots rice is also super yummy too! You can order in person or through their app for delivery and pickup, and I've never had issues with either. They're always super on time with pickup orders. I visited the Bloomfield location with my partner to meet a friend, we planned to arrive at 10:30 when it opened. Two other patrons went in before we did. Everyone, including the two of us, were greeted warmly. After the drive in (and finding a spot to park in the back of the building) we both needed to use the restrooms. Clean and nice. As we waited for our friend to arrive, we chose a place to sit near the windows; it seems most folks came in during our almost 90 minute lunch also left with their food. Plenty of places to sit down. This dining area was also clean and pleasant. The music wasn't too loud at all. Best of all, the food: once you choose what you want in your bowl if you get the customized one (you can get a pre-set bowl from the menu) you pay at the end of the counter and get your drink that you purchased from the "fountain" area. I really felt that every component of my customized bowl was fresh and had bright flavors; I had hoped so, because I chose not to get any dressing! I was not disappointed -- I didn't have to go back and get any dressing to "cover up" something that was tasteless, because... nothing was! All three of us had a really pleasant time, were able to enjoy our food, our conversation, and felt like it was a good price point, too. We WILL return! I had a primary base of kale, a secondary base of roots rice, some sweet potatoes, broccoli, onion, tomatos, and the chicken! Honestly it was so nourishing and filling, and was exactly what I needed! The bowls are big enough to get at least two meals out of them! My mom got the mayweather bowl, but switched the dressing for the dressing on the El Jefe (with the works), and it was soooo good! The other thing is the parking which is not there fault at all but in the middle of the day it can be a real hassle to find a parking spot. I had a very hard time deciding on my stars?????? The food definitely gets 5 stars as it is fantastic. If you are carrying out food i recommend this place 100%. However if you are eating in I would go to the Liberty ave store as it is beautiful inside and has the same food. I did wait to make lunch plans here until after Pitt's graduation so that it would be less crowded. It was still busy, but the line moved fast. The ingredients tasted so fresh, and you could see them cooking large batches of chicken on the grill. I love that they have so many set menu items in addition to the create your own bowls. Staff were nice and efficient. The cashier was amazing, and so friendly. My friend said she is always there and always has a positive attitude. We ate downstairs, but dressing is very limited.
