The Garu
Alex F.

I came in to try the limited time Garu bowl for lunch. The place itself is nice, it's always clean and I've never had any issues with the staff while ordering. The bowl was good but I was a little disappointed in the portion. Roots is a little bit more expensive than other similar options but I usually don't mind as they often give me a very full bowl, but that wasn't the case with the Gary bowl. It was less full than the bowls I usually get along with being very heavy on the rice and not too much chicken or even the kale. Aside from that it was still yummy but I think I'll be going back to my regular order next time.

Oh. My. Goodness. I'm madly in love with Roots Natural Kitchen!! I ordered a build your own bowl with the herb chicken, pickled red onion, crunchy chick peas, sliced brussels, brown rice, & the pesto vinaigrette... let's just say i've ordered the exact same thing three times since then, so clearly i'm obsessed! I genuinely believe that Roots Natural Kitchen has some of the best food i've ever had in my life. This combination i've created is phenomenal and I 1000% recommend it!! I have yet to make it in person yet and have only ordered on Uber Eats, but each time my food arrived in under 30 minutes! They offer such a wonderful collection of food and i'm so thankful to have found Roots! I can't wait to stop in someday and see what the store is like! You guys are incredible... keep on going until all of the U.S. has Roots Natural Kitchen!!!!!!!

Favorite bowl place in Pittsburgh (and ever)!! Better than sweetgreen or cava imo. It's my go-to when I need a quick & healthy but still filling & flavorful meal. The bowls here are customizable (they have a huge set menu too and all of them are amazing) and each bowl easily lasts two meals. My fav things to get in my custom bowls are the chicken or tofu, pita chips, sweet potatoes, roasted broccoli, & the cheddar. Their purple roots rice is also super yummy too! You can order in person or through their app for delivery and pickup, and I've never had issues with either. They're always super on time with pickup orders. There's a good amount of seating downstairs as well if you want to eat inside. Love this place so much -- I wish it would expand to more cities!!

Roots is a delicious, healthy, and fast restaurant with a variety of bowls. My favorite is the Balboa with kale!

El jefe bowl with sweet potatoes instead of pita chips, greens instead of rice.

I ordered El jefe bowl with sweet potatoes instead of pita chips, and salad greens instead of brown rice. Everything was fresh and portion was perfect for dinner. Everything tasted clean and well spiced. I went to location on Forbes ave and service was great. I forgot my drink and they refunded me without issues. I would order again. Yum yum yum!

Roots has affordable and very customizable options so anyone is able to get a bowl to their liking. The dressings that they have are amazing and will even let you try a new dressing on the side. I had come here with a friend who was visiting and the staff explained how to order patiently and allowed my friend to fell more comfortable ordering. They have both indoor and outdoor seating. The inside can be noisy sometimes with some of the cooking in the background but overall this place is always one I look forward to when I come to Pittsbugh.

Balboa Bowl + Spinach

Tasty, healthy, filling bowls. I got the balboa bowl which was a brown rice base (I added spinach as a secondary base) grilled sweet potato, roasted corn, pita chips, avocado, lime pickled red onion with lots of chicken. Very yummy! Most of their seating is downstairs which is dark and somewhat cramped. I'd recommend getting their food for takeout.

Very good food ‍

Good food very delicious. Very nice people overall very amazing really recommend honestly, the ambience is gray really calm, quiet and I like it a lot and I really recommend.

I took a Lyft from the VA hospital to the restaurant. I honestly could have walked. I did opt to walk back. This place is in trend and similar to any bowl restaurant you have ever dined at. I ordered one of their popular bowls. The food was very tasty. I really enjoyed every bite. My only complaint would be that the chicken was over cooked, and as a result a little dry. Please note that the dinning area is downstairs. It's a small space, and admittedly I was not a fan of the smell. Not sure what it smells like, but just not fresh. Regarding service: A+++++. It was the cashier for me! I wish I would have grabbed her name because she deserves a raise. Her personality was so bubbly and she really seems to like what she does. Her energy is so contagious. If you are hav ing a bad day, interacting with her will be a guaranteed way to make it better. You must check this spot out for fresh and tasty food complimented by stellar service. Honestly, the female cashier makes up for the other staff providing mediocre service

After spending 10 weeks in Philly, I was craving a nourishing bowl from roots! Roots has a bunch of pre made bowls, most of which are delicious, but I went with a build your own. I had a primary base of kale, a secondary base of roots rice, some sweet potatoes, broccoli, onion, tomatos, and the chicken! Honestly it was so nourishing and filling, and was exactly what I needed! The bowls are big enough to get at least two meals out of them! My mom got the mayweather bowl, but switched the dressing for the dressing on the El Jefe (with the works), and it was soooo good! That's definitely going to be my go-to pre-made bowl from now on! I can't wait for the school year to start so I can swing by roots in the middle of the day for an awesome lunch! Also, the staff here was super friendly and made for an awesome experience! Definitely recommend the roots in Oakland!

Custom bowl with BBQ chicken
Carlie H.

Big fan of Roots Natural Kitchen when I'm looking for a quick and healthy lunch option close by to work! My go-to order is a custom bowl with kale as a primary base and brown rice as my secondary base. You can add up to 5 ingredients before incurring additional charges, though be aware that avocado counts as 3 and a boiled egg counts as 2. I'll usually top it off with grilled red chili miso tofu or chicken. Ordering via the app can be convenient for takeout, but definitely order in advance around lunchtime or else you'll have a longer wait. Sometimes, it's actually quicker to order in-person, but it can be hard sometimes to communicate your ingredients choices over the general noise and music if you're making a custom bowl. Overall, I order here at least once a week and would definitely recommend!

Subpar tariff bowl

I believe tariffs have officially hit Roots. My online order is usually never as good as in person ordering but this time it also was quite lite. I had no brown rice, bare minimum grape tomatoes, pita chips, Parmesan, and picked red onion. The kale was kind of light too. I asked for extra dressing - but that was not provided either. It was kinda dry. I don't even know why I bothered to tip. I've had this salad many times and it is usually very good. However, this makes me question returning especially for the price plus tip.

Can I order ahead of time for pick-up?

Yes. I have not done it, but I see bagged and labeled take out bowls sitting on a shelf waiting to be picked up. I assume that you pay for it online and then can just come in and grab it.

Robin at Big Catering helped me select menu items, understand quantities and prices, and confirm all details. I asked for the food to be delivered and set up (we did not need servers during the reception). The delivery arrived exactly on time, and setup was perfect. The guests enjoyed the sight and aroma of the beautiful buffet. The delicious selections encouraged people to sit and chat, and then wander back to the buffet for another helping. We received many compliments about the wonderful food. Everything was packaged sturdily. Our family was able to take very tasty leftovers home and enjoy them. I highly recommend Big Burrito for catering, and Alta Via for menu selections.

They took my credit card information down ahead of time on the phone so all I had to do was sign the check at the end of high tea. We didn't, but somehow got lucky snagging seats at the bar... which honestly turned out to be a perfect spot to eat too! The beet salad was SO good I could've easily ordered a second without hesitation. I had a self-proclaimed Reuben connoisseur with me, and he declared it the best Reuben he's ever had (second only to his own, of course ). It's not your typical version either--no standard Thousand Island overload. The corned beef was perfectly peppered and packed with flavor, and even the bread stood out. Fish tacos? Absolutely a yes. Fresh, flavorful, and just done right. We split sides--tater tots for one dish and the homemade chips for the other. Always go for the homemade chips here. WOW! They had this subtle sweetness that made them seriously addictive. Friendly service, great atmosphere, and food that lives up to the hype. Totally worth it! We arrived around 4:30pm, we had to park on the street, but there were several spots available. The restaurant is small with a casual interior. We were greeted and seated immediately. The food was good with hearty portions, but our waitress rushed us the entire time. We said we needed a few minutes, because this was our first time here, so she stood there and just... waited. She didn't offer to make any suggestions or ask whether we had any questions, she was just standing inches from the table looking at us. Finally I had to say, "oh, you don't have to wait right here, it'll be at least 5 minutes." Then she left. We ordered an appetizer, two entrees, two non-alcoholic drinks, and two desserts. She never asked whether we wanted dessert, and reached to present the bill while asking if we needed any takeout boxes. I had to interject and ask if we could see a menu for dessert options. The check was placed on our table before dessert arrived, which has never happened to us before at any restaurant we've ever been to. Then, when the desserts were brought to the table, she grabbed the bill presenter and said, "are we good?" I replied, "no, I'll pay when we're done eating." It was odd because we went very early and there were only a few other tables occupied so, I had no idea why we were being rushed the entire time. They also brought my daughter's entree with the wrong side, but they fixed it right away with no fuss. I left a generous tip and didn't report our experience. She was never outright rude to us, but rushing guests at every interaction is uncomfortable and made us feel unwelcome. Overall, this place is good, but if I ever go back, I would insist on a different waitress.
