Nice cafe in Oakland, close to both CMU and Pitt. A few scattered tables inside and outside but also a good place for grab-and-go. Wide array of sandwiches, soups, and salads available (plus mix-and-match combos) along with a very nice dessert cooler. Pretty much everything is in the $11-$14 range. I've come here on more than one occasion now for lunch and enjoyed it each time. Wait was just 5-10 mins for my food. The turkey bacon club sandwich was the largest; it had a lot of turkey and good garnishes (bacon bits, avocado, cheddar, veggies). Chicken pesto sandwich was also good; a little lighter with just a bit of dressing instead of cheese/bacon. The mushroom/pesto veggie burger was a hearty non-meat option; they will put a veggie burger patty on any sandwich that normally has meat. I came here to get a morning coffee when I was at CMU last weekend since not much was open on campus Sunday morning. I got a banana nut loaf and a decaf latte. The loaf was good, but the latte was a little weak and there was sort of an odd gritty texture in the milk - not sure if it was the almond milk or espresso grounds. There was an unpleasant smell in the building. However. Every time I get a drink from here, it tastes like it's base. What do I mean? If I order a latte w oat milk it tastes like oat milk. If I get a hot chocolate it takes like milk. If I get tea, it tastes like water. The beverages are so diluted, I have to say, after 2 yrs of coming here, I refuse to buy another beverage. Flavor everything! Having been a customer of EU for 30 years, it is sad to see this venerable institution drop in quality. At its norm, say 10 years ago, they could process 8 people waiting in line within 20 minutes. Although because I was somewhat close to one of their servers, I knew that their staff was no so well treated by the owners, that said, from a customer perspective, things always ran smoothly. Orders were always completed in a timely manner. Recently however, I was left standing for 20 minutes with no other customers in line or nearby, waiting on a half sandwich and soup. The service was preposterous and were one a suspicious type, might have viewed the delay as deliberate considering the many wanderings and otherwise vacant meanderings of staff as I waited. Our first venture is out to Unique Eats to experience their Vegan food and we were so pleased with how pleasant everyone was and how helpful they were with advising us on the menu. Honestly was having a really sh*t day and wandered across Eat Unique. I don't know what possessed me but I guess fate kind of gave a little tug and I walked inside. I ordered probably the cheapest thing on the menu (the half grilled cheese) and a cook, I don't remember his name, he was kind of tall and had curly hair, saw that I was down and went out of his way to make my experience special. My wife left me recently and it has really made an impact on me. I have not left my apartment in about 4 days, and showering was the last thing on my mind. Honestly if I hadn't talked to this guy I don't know where I would be right now. Meal specs: They give you a grilled chicken breast cut into strips. They put walnuts, cranberries and (I believe) blue cheese. I choose against any cheese. However, you can substitute as I have before. Also, I get the cranberries on the side. I've had too many before. For the dressing I got the balsamic vinaigrette. Tip: If you order to go make sure that you check that they give you the dressing!! They often forget! This meal is a typical chicken salad meal. Nothing fancy!! GET THEIR BAKED GOODS. My favorite is the lemon bar... ahhh lemon-y goodness with a perfect crumbly crust. I've also tried their GF snickerdoodle cookie, walnut brownies, and regular brownies and they're all pretty good. They also have a matcha white chocolate brownie, which is a little bit TOO sweet for my taste, but perfect for others. Their baked goods (specifically the lemon bar) tends to disappear by mid afternoon, so get there early. One star down because I'm not a huge fan of their food. They have a ton of options for people who have gluten allergies, are dairy free or are vegetarian/vegan so props to them, but nothing shouts "OMG" to me. Eat Unique is, without a doubt, my favorite place to eat in Oakland. I pretty much always get the same thing- the summer sandwich, and garden vegan chili. It is so so so good. There is never a terribly long line, there is always somewhere to sit, and the food is SO GOOD. I probably went there at least 25 times in the last two years. It's not really expensive. You have to get their baked goods. Their matcha brownies are my favorite when they have them, but everything I've had from their baked good section has been delicious. The concept and food of this cafe are great. It's a nice option when you are looking for lunch with a variety of things to order and some healthy choices. The white turkey chili is my go to order. And they also have delicious unhealthy food choices, like their homemade desserts. The downside is that the establishment gets my order wrong about 70% of the time. Whether our office calls to order over the phone or I walk in to place my order, consistently something is not correct. Everything is also very chaotic and hectic during lunch. The design of the space is not suited for the type of business where so many people get things to go and there is no comfortable room to wait for your order to be called when it's busy. Most of the staff doesn't seem to know what's in the items or how they are served but they will ask to find out sometimes, and other times they just take a guess and that's that. I'll keep going back because the food is good and convenient. Rooting for them to find their rhythm and smooth out the kinks! read more

My only regret about this place is that I never came here when I was a student. It was so good! Yes, the check-out space wasn't designed very well and often results in human traffic jams. Yes, the food costs more than you'd want it to here. But c'mon: EVERY place costs more than I want it to, and as someone else pointed out: Eat Unique's prices compare to Panera's, only Eat Unique's food tastes even better (and I say this as a solid Panera fan). There's a ton of seating options in here, too, so before you complain, just think about how many fewer tables there may have been if they knocked out a wall to try and expand the line area. I had the Grilled Pesto Chicken sandwich during my first visit in an effort to avoid some of the "unhealthier" options on the menu and have to say, I was very, very pleased. It's very rare that I get a sandwich that perfectly balances toppings and meat; usually I get too much of one or the other. Plus, the toppings were crisp and fresh, and the chicken well cooked. Not the juiciest chicken ever but not dry by any means. It was right on, it hit the spot, and it left me feeling satisfied and yet ready for more. Don't worry: I was good and opted to keep the place in mind for another day, rather than pig out on a second sandwich. I am already excited to come back and try many, many more options on the menu, including the veggie and the beef and brie sandwiches.
