Absolutely incredible! This is the BEST cornbeef sandwich I've ever eaten. And trust me I've tried many. The meat was fresh, the Swiss cheese melted to perfection, and the rye bread was perfectly toasted. I did not miss the absence of toppings. The pickle was incredible! The market has a selection of items you can't find everywhere. It's cute and quaint with amazing photos. I literally love this place. And service is top notch!!! Recently, a relative in the Pittsburgh area went through a medical procedure, so we wanted to send them some great food. Squirrel Hill Market came through. We ordered matzo ball soup, corned beef, knishes, and latkes--everything was fresh, comforting, and absolutely delicious. We also spoke with the owner, and it's clear he genuinely cares and knows his stuff. Being from NY and Philly, we know a good deli--and this one delivers. When I go to your business' instagram page and find a parade of postings of pinup girls with pastrami sandwiches crudely shopped in - you have my curiosity. When I show up and discover a charming, thoughtful person cooking up the best pastrami on rye I've had in over a decade? You have my heart. This is as a straightforward as it gets: a pound of deliciously aged, brined, and smoked pastrami on toasted (or not) bread. Accoutrements are minimal: mustard, swiss cheese, coleslaw, sauerkraut. I went with only mustard, and the flavor of the meat still carried the sandwich to elite flavor. There's also corned beef, hot dogs, latkes, and knishes (my fwb got two and said they were delicious). I'll be back to try it all. So far I've had 5 pastrami sandwiches and each has been praiseworthy. Truly pinup worthy. read more

The sandwich was mediocre at best and the service was fairly slow, but the 1 star is mainly because the owners seem to care more about churning out AI slop marketing and posting unhinged, ChatGPT responses to any negative reviews on other platforms. Maybe spend less time being edgy and more time improving your product/service? Edit - these people looked up my office phone number and tried to call me less than 30 minutes after leaving reviews. Absolutely unhinged behavior. 2nd Edit - the owner also sent an email to my WORK email account and CC'd Google Legal insulating that someone hijacked my account to leave the review. 3rd Edit - When I didn't respond to the first email, they sent a second email to other folks at my company. Suffice to say, I've now reported it to Pittsburgh PD. read more

My husband is a Ruben connoisseur and had been wanting to have their Ruben, so he stopped last week and got it. He loved it! He got latkes, a pickle and matzo ball soup too. The matzo ball soup was good, but it had chicken and noodles, which I didn't expect. It was a tad salty but good. The latkes weren't exactly what we expected. You could see the shredded potatoes and they tasted like the oil they had been cooked in, but not in a good way. The pickle was excellent. A good spot if you want an impressive Ruben. read more

My husband and I heard about the Reuben sandwich at Squirrel Hill Market and it did NOT disappoint. This is a very small convenience store with a small deli counter. I wouldn't have necessarily expected much from here in terms of amazing fresh sandwiches, but it knocked my socks off. The amount of meat on that sandwich and the flavor was unbelievable and I've been dreaming about having another one ever since. The guy at the counter was suuuuper friendly and even gave our two kids a free honey stick from the store which was so kind and generous. Only reason this spot has a low overall is because of people who didn't eat the food giving it such a low ranking. I'm sure if they stopped being so soft and just got the sandwich they wouldn't have given this spot so low Whoever was working behind the counter was beyond nice and super funny Inside is as small as all hell and no eating in there. There's a table outside and trust me, you're gonna want to eat it right away and NEED a table Sandwich wise you got two options. Pound of pastrami or corned beef on rye bread with cheese. I got the pastrami with Russian dressing and sauerkraut. That pastrami. Is arguably the best pastrami I've ever had. It's smoked so salt, not unbearable salty and SOOO juicy I honestly would recommend just asking them if you can get two pieces of bread in the side and make two sandwiches with all of the meat. On our recent trip back to the 'Burgh, we had an opportunity to grab lunch at Squirrel Hill Market. The lovely server fixed us the perfect Pastrami on Rye. A full pound of pastrami was gently steamed while the rye was perfectly toasted. We split this magnificent mound of goodness and were still unable to finish it all. Loved every bite! read more

My grandfather and I are big fans of Reuben sandwiches, and so when I heard about Squirrel Hill Market's massive offering, I knew I had to try it. I showed up around 12:30pm on a Saturday and was the only one in the market. The employee working the counter was friendly and personable and quickly set about making the sandwich. From what I've heard, it's about 1lbs of meat, and so I knew I would be sharing this massive sandwich with my wife. It also comes with an enormous kosher dill pickle. As we elected to toast the bread, it took a little longer to prepare, but it was clear that a lot of care and attention is put into making the sandwiches. I was really impressed with the sandwich, and even for almost $24 dollars, it was filling and easy to split with two people. As we were walking out of the market (there's no seating inside), the employee brought out a couple cafe tables and so we were able to eat right out on the sidewalk and enjoy the beautiful fall weather. Great place to stop in at and the Reuben lives up to the hype for me. read more

This is absolutely the very best corned beef sandwiches in the Pittsburgh area. They are simply huge with over a pound of meat that is flavorful, tender and juicy. The only place that is a little better is Slymans in Cleveland OH. Squirrel Hill Market is a very close second and is comparable to Kats Deli in New York City. You cannot go wrong there. read more

I went to this place for the second time in a couple days and I have had all positive experiences. First off, the girl who waited on me was extremely friendly and helpful. Not only that but she had a real good conversation while I was waiting for my hot dog to cook. I believe her name is Robyn. It's easy to decide what to order too because the menu is small. The hot dogs are very delicious and not only that but they are big that you can share with someone that are a very reasonable price. I am satisfied. The service was great too and the worker was friendly. I feel good supporting a family owned business too. I don't understand the negative reviews at all. People who are complaining giving this Squirrel Hill Market place only a one star review are nuts or have no reason to. I will for sure be back to this place a regular because I live right by there in the Squirrel Hill Area and there is no reason not to as long as they stay professional and friendly keeping this great customer service up but so far no problems when I went there. read more

It is meant to be shared, which explains the price, though I had a Burrito at Chipotle that cost more. I don't want to give a one-star review, particularly because: 1) The staff was very friendly, 2) I appreciate the niche they are trying to fill in the community. But I was served a sandwich (a very expensive sandwich) which was essentially inedible. It's pastrami, I get it, there's going to be fat & grease. But in the less than 5 minutes from when I left the restaurant to when I got to my office, the meat in my sandwich had completely soaked through the bread, soaked through the sandwich wrapper and almost through the paper bag. What I could salvage had very good flavor (particularly the brown mustard), but this was no way to serve your customers. read more

Traveled out of our way to shop here. Supposed to open at 11:00 am. Stood in the cold, along with a delivery driver, at 11:13 am and still not opened. After warming up in the car, left a good parking spot (which is unheard of on Murray Avenue) and ventured to another stop. Passed the market, with open sign on. Worked our way around the side streets and found a not to bad spot. Entered the market with the person busily trying to get the coffee started. Never greeted us, nor even turned around to acknowledge us. Finally she turned around and just looked at us. I mentioned that we were here at 11 and was told never to come on time as she's always late. Then she proceeded to work on the coffee pot, never asking if we needed/wanted anything. When she turned around again, said something like "well" or "did you want anything" We're standing at your counter......not looking around the store. I asked if they had soup and was told not this early as it takes the equipment time to warm up. I then asked what other food items were available and was told the latkes, but they are not warmed up. That was it.......was never treated so rudely. Was prepared to pay the $21 some dollars for their famous pastrami sandwich, but not after how we were treated. Just walked out. read more

I had the pastrami. The meat was excellent and the owner was pleasant although I got there when they opened and she was not ready for business. Nothing was turned on and I waited quite a while. Also, I'd rather have two manageable sandwiches than one huge one for the price. From the hype I thought I was in for treat, but really the "market" is a few shelves of honey, some chips and a few beverages. There is no ambiance. Not even a chair when there is a long wait. Best little market in town. Staples? Check! But also awesome locally made products and regional favorites. The only place in Pittsburgh for Middleswarth and Gibbles potato chips and Penn State ice cream. They've got fresh bread, bagels, and I love the French butters! read more
