Veggie omelette with hash browns and biscuits

First ever Isaly's visit: check! To preface, I'm very much admittedly not a true Yinzer in the sense that my familial roots are not in Pittsburgh. So, with that being said, I don't necessarily have the same nostalgia or connection to the Isaly's brand compared to many of my loved ones who are deep-rooted and steeped in local tradition. All of that being said, even without the embedded personal ties, I still know that Isaly's is a local icon in terms of branding and presence in many Pittsburgh homes and family histories! There are only a handful of Isaly's locations left in the area, including this location on Perry Highway. My husband and I moved to the Ross/West View area fairly recently and we've been meaning to try this legendary diner - we are so lucky to have this spot so close to home! The restaurant is lovingly maintained and looks nostalgic in every way, from the exterior signage to the booths to the local street signs and newspaper clippings and everything in-between. Our first visit was a great one. Service was friendly, the prices were reasonable, and the ambiance was cozy (perfectly paired with the spring rainstorm taking place outside). For food, I tried a veggie omelette with sausage, hash browns, and biscuits. It was SO good! Stuffed with veggies and cheese and sausage, and the potatoes were crispy (more like mini potato pancakes). The biscuits were warm and soft! My husband and I also split a warm cinnamon roll, which was fantastic. His breakfast was sausage gravy and biscuits with an egg, which he really enjoyed! Our friends also tried an omelette and the sausage and gravy dish - everyone was a happy camper for this Sunday brunch meal. It's all classic, simple, tasty fare, perfect for a laid-back lunch date or a breakfast after a night out. I want to return ASAP and try a burger and fries and a milkshake!

Today we stepped back in time and visited Isalys in West View. We were warmly greeted and sat at the bar and even got to watch cartoons from the 70s. Good old Foghorn Leghorn, tweetie and Thomas. Food was great an all around great experience. Will definitely be back!

Isaly's was a chain of restaurants that opened in the early 1900s. They were famous for inventing the Klondike bar, which is now owned by Unilever, as well as chipped-chopped ham, which is thinly sliced or shaved. Today, I think that only a few locations of Isaly's restaurants remain. Fun fact: My husband's uncle is a historian who wrote a book about Isaly's. You can read about his book on Isaly's website and other websites. Anyway...today was my first-ever time inside an Isaly's. I chose to visit this location on Perry Highway because it had decent ratings. My husband and I parked our vehicle on the street. We entered the restaurant and saw a sign that told us to seat ourselves at any table. Soon, our waitress approached us and gave us menus. Please see my attached photos for the menus for breakfast and lunch. Our waitress made courteous conversation, and she was very timely with taking our order and with bringing out our drinks, foods, and bill. Here are my ratings for our foods: Omelette - 4 stars - My husband chose an omelette that contained cheese and bacon. He said that it tasted good, and he ate all of it. His sides were Italian bread, which was nicely toasted and buttered, and hash browns, which were crispy and seasoned. My husband also enjoyed a glass of orange juice. Everyday special - 4 stars - I chose two sunny-side-up eggs, chipped ham, home fries, and wheat toast. My eggs were cooked properly, my ham was shredded and tasted like ham, my home fries were fried well, and my toast was toasted and buttered. Cinnamon roll - 4 stars - This cinnamon roll was a good size, was served warm, and contained a proper amount of cinnamon and icing. At the end of our meal, we walked up to the counter, and we used a credit card to pay for our meal. We had noticed a lottery machine nearby, and we had asked the employee if we could purchase lottery tickets. She forgot, so we reminded her. We paid cash for the lottery tickets. She made pleasant conversation with us and thanked us.

I'll start by saying the lady up front was amazing, felt like I was being served by a friend the whole time The inside felt a bit retro with character on all the walls Now for the food , it was filling ! For the price and what I got I am satisfied, the toast was perfect , the bacon had a crunch and the French toast was good I would come here again for sure 4/5

Anytime we're in the west view area we always have to stop at Isalys !! it's just a cozy, feeling of nostalgia just being in the restaurant. My dad grew up in West View, so I always like to share the memorabilia I saw with him. It's so fun to look around and the prices are very reasonable.

Paperback book I got as a Christmas gift. 148 pp, listed price is $19.95 and is associated with the History Center. Awaiting ice cream temps

I'm a former "Isaly's was my neighbor kid" because we lived above my dad's store and Isaly's was directly across the street! I could not have had fonder memories! For Christmas one of my kids got me a book about Isaly's, so you know they've heard plenty about it! I'm so glad there's still one open in greater Pgh, and cannot wait till ice cream weather this year! I hope they still make skyscrapers!

Their bathroom sign is kinda awesome.

When we first walked in, we weren't exactly sure what to expect because everyone inside just kinda swiveled their heads to stare at us. (Maybe we just reallyyy looked like we weren't from around there? Which we weren't. har har. :x ) But we were seated quickly and our server brought us our menus. All of us were in the mood for burgers, but we were informed that the burgers couldn't happen that day, and that she'd understand if we wanted to leave. Since we were all ravenous to the point of being hangry, we decided to stay, and all of us were able to find something we wanted on the menu. Aside from burgers, they also have sandwiches, salads, soups, and traditional breakfast items (e.g. pancakes, toast, eggs, omelets, etc.). Our server came back looking kinda like she wanted to crawl under our table, and informed our friend that they didn't have regular shrimp either, but that they did have popcorn shrimp. (From how distressed she looked, we kinda thought she'd come back to tell us that all they had was bread and cheese for the day.) I got a chicken salad sandwich on toasted wheat bread and homefries on the side with green peppers + onions, and was very happy with my order (~$7). They don't skimp on the chicken, and it isn't super mayo-heavy, which I really appreciated. (Our server came back to tell us that the toaster had blown up, and that she couldn't toast our bread, but she's a terrible liar and was trying really hard not to crack up, so none of us believed her.) I also got to sample the onion rings that my friend ordered, which were super delicious! Soooo, all in all, the food is great, especially for the prices they're offered at, and the staff is super friendly with a great sense of humor. They have ice cream on either a sugar or waffle cone, or milkshakes (vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, and the flavor of the month in March was Thin Mint), so we decided to each order dessert, and they actually gave it to us on the house to apologize for not having some of the things we'd wanted to order! :O If I'm ever in the area again, I'd definitely come back here for inexpensive comfort food! (They close at 3 p.m.!)

Steak and Eggs with Home fries and toast

This place has such the old school classic diner feel to it. The waitress are so laid back, funny, and friendly. They cook on the grill right out in the open which is also nice. The menu had plenty of options and at a very affordable price. I had a strong craving for breakfast food, so I tried the Steak and Eggs meal. It also comes with home fries and toast. The food came out in a timely manner and was delicious. The meat was very rare, and the waitress didn't ask me how I wanted it. Luckily, I was okay with it being rare this time...which is quite unusual for me. It wasn't extremely flavorful, but when I added a little salt and pepper that did the trick. I definitely plan to visit again and will try out the Chicken Salad sandwich.

This is as a straightforward as it gets: a pound of deliciously aged, brined, and smoked pastrami on toasted (or not) bread. Accoutrements are minimal: mustard, swiss cheese, coleslaw, sauerkraut. I went with only mustard, and the flavor of the meat still carried the sandwich to elite flavor. There's also corned beef, hot dogs, latkes, and knishes (my fwb got two and said they were delicious). I'll be back to try it all. So far I've had 5 pastrami sandwiches and each has been praiseworthy. Truly pinup worthy.
