I'm not sure where the low ratings come from. I found the experience to be fast and efficient, with a really good result. I'm taking one star back because I feel like they gouge you on the drinks from the cooler. I got an peach iced tea that I can get anywhere for a buck or so. Here, I was charged over $3 for the same drink. Other than that, I can't complain. The place was clean and the service good. I couldn't make up my mind since they have a pretty extensive sandwich menu. I finally decided on a regular cold sub of ham and cheese. I really expected something ordinary, but I have to admit, I was pleasantly surprised. The bread was fresh, a seeded sub roll. There was certainly a generous amount of fresh sliced ham inside, with a good quality American cheese. I was asked if I would like anything else on it. I chose tomato, onions and mayo, along with sweet red peppers. The toppings were pretty generous, giving every bite the same taste and texture. Too many times, the condiments shift and one bite can be quite different from another. In this case, every bite end to end was the same. The ham and vegetables were fresh and vibrant. The price was a bit more than I expected, but not out of line for the location. It seems the closer you get to downtown, the more you expect in pricing. Even with that, the cost wasn't out of line, and the menu has a $1 off coupon. Over all, you can be sure I'll be back to try some of their other subs. They do a good job. read more

I'm from Philly and the OG Primo is my absolute favorite. I rave about it and I was so excited when they came to Pittsburgh. Unfortunately this location taints the Primo name. They never, I mean never get the order right. Every time I order a Schwartzie I get a PLAIN turkey sandwich. Although, I dined outside on the patio both areas were spotless. The staff was engaging and friendly and my meal tasted and was served perfectly. First time at this franchise and not impressed with the service. I ordered a 9" inch hogie that cost $14. Which I guess food costs are overpriced everywhere these days. But what blew my mind was it took two guys to make my hogie. I'm the only one in the restaurant. I watched them struggle to figure out what ingredients were in front of them and they were more interested in their conversation than making my food. We came on a Friday afternoon. We were pretty much the only customers other than some occasional takeouts. The service was prompt and friendly. They even recommended a gelato place nearby and talked about all the new businesses at the Terminal. I really want to like them, but the meatball hoagie I got was really just OK, even below average. If you don't have 45 minutes to eat, don't eat here. There were only 3 people in the restaurant and this was, by far, the slowest service EVER from any restaurant, including sit down ones. And asking for a tip upfront for this kind of crappy service is even worse. As for the ambiance, it's just a small, fast-food like layout. Not the cleanest. Bathrooms locked which is insane. As for the food, it was ok. I won't be back. Potato salad was like any store brand, pre-packaged one. The hoagie was just ok. Again, for the high price, it should taste like fresh deli sliced meats & cheeses. Instead it tasted like Subway. It really was bland and nothing spectacular. I love hoagies & am always in search of hoagies that I've only heard about. Recently, I had the pleasure of having the 9" Primo size Abruzzi, sliced pork, cheese & broccoli rabe on a sesame roll. It was very good but found it to be light on fillings for the 12.99 price. This being my first, I did not know what to expect. Next time, I think I will ask for it to be heated. I believe the bread makes the sandwich & found the sesame roll to be fresh & delicious! It was a very good sandwich! I got an appropriately priced order of Mac salad that was to my liking & not very sweet. Of course, not as good as mine but not bad. Better than most. As far as the service, it was friendly & efficient! I met a woman who told me that she & her husband had recently taken over the shop. She was very friendly & engaging. Happen to be in The Strip to do some shopping and notice balloons at the door so stopped in for lunch. Have been to the McMurray location and enjoyed the fresh bread and Italian hoagie. So being a creature of nature, I ordered the Italian hoagie. Good stuff. Fresh bread with some of the usual meats you find on an Italian hoagie of prosciutto, capitol and provolone. Was in the strip terminal wasting time before an appt and decided to come here for a quick dinner. I got the Diablo Italian hoagie. I was expecting the bread to be more fresh from the other reviews, it was just okay. The meats were very good, and for that reason I'd be willing to go back! I did get additional toppings which makes it a bigger hoagie but I literally could not fold it in half making it very difficult to eat. I also got oil and vinegar and it seems like they just put it on at the end, the top of my roll was incredibly soggy so I tore it off. Maybe I just came on an off day. read more

I agree with Joel S's review below. We didn't even get to fully order. The lady that works there should not and there is a reason it was practically empty when we walked in. She sighed walking up to the counter to wait on us. I said "hello! How are you?" And I got an eye roll. I proceeded to order and then it was my husband's turn. He started to order and she sighed, moaned and continued to be unpleasant. He asked for no veggies but pickles. That was the last sigh. She then said "you said no veggies". Then we said "we are done" and walked out. I would never recommend this place to anyone while she still works there. To say we were shocked with her behavior is understatement. TL;DR: The sandwiches are above average, but I had some MAJOR concerns around the staff and don't think anyone is supervising the location in any meaningful way, which scares me a little bit. let me start this by saying I LOVE primo. I grew up in the Philadelphia area and ate at the primo Hamilton NJ all the time. Given what I remembered, I was a little shocked at the 2.8 star average for the strip district location, but totally understand it after going. I don't like to call out specific employees in reviews, but I suspect this one won't be around longer and I think her being there is indicative of larger problems of no one properly managing this restaurant. The woman who helped me was almost intentionally unhelpful and rude, didn't offer a menu (2/3 of the TV menu was blacked out) and acted like I was ruining her day by walking in. She didn't answer questions in any helpful way (e.g. she said "I don't know. whatever you feel like" when I asked what toppings she recommended on one sandwich) and only pointed to the wall when I asked what the sizes were. My 7 year old daughter quietly asked me why she was so upset when we left. There was another gentleman that was working there and he might be the only reason that place was held together although I didn't interact with him. The food was...okay? The bread was amazing... Some of the better bread you'll find in a Pittsburgh sandwich shop. We got the roast pork w/sharp provolone and broccoli rabe, which was served cold and without Jus, which made the sandwich dry and a little weird. Anyone who has ordered the sandwich anywhere in Philly knows it's served warm so that threw me off. We also ordered an Italian sandwich that was good. The cost was around $60 for two very large sandwiches. I think they were 27 inches, so it's pricey for 2 sandwiches, but they easily fed our family of 4 with plenty of leftovers. In the restaurant business, they say to look at the bathrooms and if they're clean the kitchen is probably clean too. While I wasn't worried about cleanliness, I definitely was wondering to myself: if Primo is comfortable with this woman working here, what else are the comfortable tolerating? For a premium sandwich at a premium price point, we probably won't be back soon in an area of the city that has so many other amazing options which is really disappointing. read more

Ordered a schwartzie which was basically a Reuben on a hoagie bun & an Italian. They forgot to put the lettuce, tomato, onion & dressing on the Italian so it was just meat. The schwartzie was so messy that it was basically a coleslaw sandwich. Staff seemed unhappy we were ordering so late & I definitely wish they had more fresh vegetable options. I've lived in Philly for 20 years , I was so excited when I heard they were coming to Pittsburgh. Recently I noticed they quality compared to Philly to Pittsburgh is like night and day. I ordered a hoagie tray with seedless roll and I get seeded rolls We asked for the Soprano and we great a regular Turkey hoagie. Honestly it can be that hard to follow an order. I will never visit this Primo's on Smallman street. I was the biggest fan, but it seems like those in Pittsburgh don't understand how to make a hoagie. This is the last time I visit that location. The bread and ingredients are nice and fresh and you definitely get your money's worth with one of their hoagies. Pro tip: try the Italian hoagie CHIPS. While I waited several minutes for the sandwich to be prepared, I listened to the manager on a loud and unprofessional rant about a previous encounter with a customer. Now I know this may be an unusual order, but the employees working started to harass her. The cashier said "okay weird" after she ordered and then she proceeded to yell to the guys in the back "hey guys just so you know this order coming in, is not a mistake." My sister was very visibly uncomfortable and embarrassed. After they finished making her hoagie, the worker in the back yelled out "meatball and mayonnaise" and then all the workers started audibly laughing loud enough we could hear from the table. I've been a fan of Primo Hoagies for years and was excited to hear we were getting one in Pittsburgh. Unfortunately, that excitement has steadily declined to disappointment and sadness. Each time I've visited franchises in Wilkes Barre, West Chester, Easton, & Exton, I've always enjoyed their signature seeded bread. The four times I've ordered from this new shop in the strip, the bread has been stale. So, on this fifth visit, I asked what the deal was. Clearly it's not freshly baked (or delivered) daily to this location. The answer? It's par-baked. That's fine, I guess. The gent working the counter offers to freshly "bake" ours since I explained our dilemma. Really? Great! I appreciate you, kind sir. My excitement has been restored...until I open the primo. First off, I don't understand why I should have to ask to have a 12" hoagie cut in half. I'm not a cartoon character. I'm not eating this thing with two hands out of the paper, but I digress. The biggest issue, despite my order of LTO, pickles, and sweet & hot peppers, there is a single strand of onion and zero peppers. To make matters worse, they forgot the pepper Jack cheese which is part of the punch you look forward to when ordering the Diablo. The bread was better, but the cheese was left off my partner's sandwich as well. If two people are spending $41 BEFORE tip on sandwiches, I shouldn't have to ask for fresh bread and you better not forget the cheese. I'll be returning to other Primo locations, but sadly can't lower my expectations enough to visit this one again. read more
