Such a great little place on lower street in Spruce Pine. I was sad to see that it was destroyed by Hurricane Helene and I really hope they can rebuild and continue offering some delicious food to Mitchell County. My wife and I stopped by Hef's to try it out. It's a small place, not very clean. The waitress did wipe our table after we sat down but there were a lot of crumbs between the table and the wall. They had one waitress working, I don't know if they are normally short staffed (like most places nowadays). I will give it to her, she was trying her best and she was very nice. I started with the Jalapeño Poppers. They were good. My wife had the fried mushrooms. She liked them. I had a burger all the way, it was okay, nothing special. Let me start off by saying that the people that own and work at this restaurant seem like lovely people. They were courteous, patient, pleasant. They took our order quickly. Now, the food. My husband asked if they could do a medium rare burger because their burgers looked amazing on-line. The waitress said sure. She asked his toppings and side...tater tots. I got the reuben with slaw and onion rings. Then we waited. And waited. And waited. There were only five parties in the restaurant so they weren't slamming busy. Finally our food came. The burger was well done. Toppings were sparse. The tater tots were so salty, they were inedible. My reuben was really different. Cut very thin, the little amount of meat had been fried, kinda like bacon. It was super dry and stiff. There was no dressing or slaw on the sandwich. Also, the onion rings were very salty...like they had used coarse salt on them because you could see the big crystals. Best thing of the meal was the diet coke. Love the menu and they make dressings in house. But it's never consistent and to go orders are usually missing something. We've learned to always check our bag. Eating in can be hit or miss, sticky tables and a slippery floor walking out. I almost fell just walking on a dry day it's greasy or something. You must check this place out when you're in Spruce Pine! It's a little sports pub/bar type of place with an excellent selection of food. I ordered the cheese sticks and a small cheese pizza. (Cheese cheese cheese) Let me tell you-the marinara that came with the cheese sticks is actually the most delicious marinara I've ever tasted in my entire life! It's HOMEMADE and I truly wanted to take it all with me. The pizza-I'm not even really a pizza person but I'm telling you this pizza was delicious. It was just the right amount of everything including size if you really just want a single serving. Our server was really nice and everything was pretty perfect in this place. Unexpectedly great food in a pleasant bar setting. Lots of comfortable seating, and it wasn't loud inside for a bar, you could actually have a conversation. Menu isn't super extensive but covers the bases of bar food like you'd expect. Plenty of beers on tap too. We mostly had pizza and wings, and it was great. The wings were -- and I cannot emphasize enough how important this is -- NOT drowning in sauce, but nicely flavored and crispy without being soggy. The pizza was pretty great, not a real thin crisp crust but the dough definitely tasted fresh and not frozen. Service was fast, attentive, and cheerful. Boyfriend had the wings and said they were alright, and my daughter had the mushroom Swiss burger and she said it was good. Waited forever for a drink refill. Waitress didn't come back to check on us after our food was delivered until she brought the check. She didn't seem knowledgeable about the menu or specials. When I asked what kind of meat came with the bbq plate she replied, "what do you mean?" We won't be back. Out of towners who visited because of high recommendation from local campground owner. Totally hit the spot! It's a pretty unassuming location, looks like a good local bar. Clean and well kept. The shrimp po boy was perfect! The onion rings were great. The draft beer was good. Seems like the lines are clean and the carbonation is tuned in well. The pizza was ok, it tasted fresh but I tend to prefer a more neapolitan style but that's just my preference. Two more words of advice: FRIED.OREO. read more

While house hunting on the area we came across Hef's while driving through downtown Spruce Pine. Found it to be a friendly place with good food and some local beers on draft, along with a full bar. Since finding a house we have been back quite a few times and have always been happy with the service. We have had different varieties of burgers, a chicken sandwich (you can request "Buffaloed") and never been disappointed. One experience impressed me - the week of the solar eclipse when there were a lot of tourists passing through, there was a small group of folks from Germany who came in. It was obvious that their English wasn't the best, and they weren't quite sure about the menu choices. The bartender took the time to explain what was available, and even offered a customized pizza since they were looking for a vegetarian option. We like Hef's and will be back! read more

I stopped into Hef's a few month's ago with my husband for a much needed glass of wine while visiting with family. They have a minimal sports theme, a handful of flat screen TVs, a very small bar (about 5-8 seater), and multiple booths and tables. The interior features the exposed brick you know and love in Downtown Spruce Pine. It is clean, warm and welcoming. I ordered a glass of their Cabernet Sauvignon which hit the spot. My husband had a draft Sam Adams. We munched on an order of their fried pickles. It was a nice break from the craziness that usually comes with big family gatherings. My only complaint is that I really wanted to sit at the bar and be a little more socially involved in the atmosphere, but there was a family with two kids sitting there taking up most of the seats. Kind of weird to me that they would have brought their kids to sit at a bar and eat dinner, but then again this has been a dry county up until about 3 years ago. Also there are no darts or pool tables. The place is probably too small for pool tables, but darts would have been a nice touch. read more

My husband and I love Hefs, the food is so good I'm not much of a drinker, but husband loves the beer. I have never gotten anything to eat that was a disappointment. The hamburgers are excellent and the fries are the best. They have quite a few different hamburgers selections. The ribeye night is so good, I don't feel uncomfortable here and it isn't rowdy. Typically sit at the bar when I go for lunch. Service is what you would expect from a bar. Mainly go on Tuesdays because it is 50 cent wings. Therefore I haven't explored the menu. Wing sauce is very good however the wings are a tad small. Overall I would definitely recommend this to someone searching for wings. There calamari was surprisingly good. I got it as an appetizer and it isn't your usual calamari dish. Instead of being in rings and squid, it is kind of long strips with sauce poured on top of it. I was a fan of this twist. read more
