I've had computers die in the past and have been able to recover a few hard drives by myself. But when my laptop croaked last month and the normal tricks didn't work, I knew that I needed a professional. I first brought the drive to a local repair shop -- the kind that looks like it hasn't been vacuumed in 20 years, with yellowing accessories on the wall and piles of dead computers stacked halfway to the ceiling. The guy took 10 minutes to look at my drive and then quoted me a *starting* price of about $800. That seemed ridiculous, so I took my search online. Thankfully, HB Computers has a great reputation and was easy to find. In a 5 minute phone call, they were able to confirm the problem with my drive and said that, if they could recover the data, it would be a flat rate of $399 -- literally half the price of the other place. I brought them my drive -- they work out of a nice, clean storefront in a little strip mall with easy parking -- and they called me back two days later to say it was ready. The process literally could not have been easier. When I picked up my drive, the owner Amir explained that HB is able to do the work much cheaper because they invested in the machinery required to do these more complicated recoveries, whereas other shops might outsource the work. I found these guys on EBAY, I was looking for a battery for a laptop that is a few years old and has issues with battery life. I was looking for a vendor who had it locally so that I wouldn't have to wait for shipping and possibly deal with warranty claims (as laptop batteries are somewhat problematic) while I shipped it back and forth. Much to my surprise HB Computerz is 5 miles away and they have the item listed as surplus at 75% off the other sellers! I ran down there first thing this morning and here's how my interaction went: This is a pretty busy shop but the owner, Amir, came out introduced himself to me as I walked through the door. After I explained the reason for my visit he informed me that Jeff, who handles the eBay account was not in yet but he told me that if I came back to pick it up after 12pm they would make me a deal for the inconvenience of coming back. He asked for my number and told me that Jeff would call me when he got in. Jeff called me at 12: 05 and left a message as I was unable to aswer his call when it came in... He left me a message with his with both the office and his cell number, and told me that my battery was there and he'd be there the rest of the day. When I called back to his cell number almost 2 hours later he was quick to answer and told me to come in whenever I could to pick it up. When I walked in the store the second time, Jeff greeted me at the front counter fit the battery to my laptop then proceeded to clean my screen and case for me. Mission accomplished! Here comes the cool part, I was a new customer and they didn't know me from Adam but they made me feel like my visit was important. Amir came over again and thanked me for coming back and instructed Jeff to take $25 off my bill for making the second trip. Jeff told me that Amir does stuff like that all the time as he wants to make sure that new customers receive the best customer service available. My hp Mini laptop was not powering on so, based on their awesome Yelp rating and proximity to my home, I brought it here. They have a $50 fee to diagnose (which can later be applied toward service/repair), but I expressed concern that it may not even be worth it for me to invest $5 into this thing, so they agreed to have a look at no charge. They were very thorough and called me back when they said they would to let me know what they had found out so far. They even ordered a new power cord just to rule that out as a possibility. In the end, it turned out to be the motherboard, and they were honest with me stating it probably wouldn't be worth it for me to get it fixed. They said i could buy a new laptop for cheaper! I recently visited this computer repair shop when my HP Laptop started having issues with Zorion installed. Selected this repair shop based on good review on yelp and sure I was impressed with the customer service and quality of work done. Amir (Owner) explained that he will run the detail diagnostics on my laptop and explained the total cost, He suggested to go for Windows 7 Ultimate instead of Zorion, and also recommended not to run Zorion and Windows together. I'm guessing that this shop is getting all these 5 star reviews because everyone posting them has no idea that they are being over charged and sold things they don't need or maybe I'm the only one this has happened to. I took a computer here because I thought I'd try out a different place then my usual. My computer's issue was purely software related and had nothing to do with the hardware and they told me the following: - told me my hard drive was bad when it is only about 2 years old (it was perfectly fine) - Gave me some analysis saying my hard drive was dying when I know it wasn't - Told me that it would cost close to $230 to replace the hard drive. (a new hard drive can be bought as cheaply as $60 brand new and it takes a couple minutes to replace. This is a ridiculous price.) After experiencing this I brought it to my usual repair shop Adam's Electronics and they gave me the correct diagnostic which was that my operating system got corrupted so they did a system restore loaded a new operating system and everything was perfectly fine. Bottom line, the employees at HB Computers are nice and all but they will scam you hard and waste your precious time and hard earned money. Note: I am not associated with Adams or HB computers. I am a customer who was very disappointed with the service. Correction: I corrected the price from $130 to $230 because I didn't notice that I hit the wrong button. read more

Hands down, B E S T I N T H E B U S I N E S S. My MacBook Pro of nearly 6 years (Early 2011 model) finally gave me a hard drive issue. I spent hours trying to recover my data and seeing if it was even possible. I was constantly troubled by the thought of losing 6 years of home videos, thousands of songs individually beatgridded and tracked in Serato, hundreds of important tax documents being gone forever along with other valuable files. When I went to Apple, they gave me a sheet with several service providers to get hard drive recovery and installation help. I went to two locations on the list. Not gonna lie, it felt really sketchy at the first one in Seal Beach. I didn't know what I was about to get myself into so I left. The prices were super high too. Other locations were too far from me. So I used the Apple Maps app to find other local-ish computer service providers and I came across HB COMPUTERS because I was already in the area (Seal Beach / Huntington Beach) and needed to get my Macbook up and running again asap. I walked in and was immediately was kindly greeted by Jeff, one of the nicest guys ever. It felt like home already. I also have to mention that this place looked OFFICIAL and LEGITIMATE. They have the right technology, hardware, tools and skilled / qualified people doing beyond satisfactory work for their patrons and customers. I left my computer there on a Tuesday and Amir, a true miracle worker, said he would call me on Friday with diagnostic results and how to fix it. He called me the NEXT DAY (I was pleasantly surprise with the speediness) with some of the best news. They were able to transfer the hard drive data to a new drive and successful install it. But wait...it gets better. He was able to give me a 1TB hard drive instead of the stock 500GB drive I originally had. He was able to offer me something better than what I had at a great price. The computer was ready for pickup the following monday. So when I went inside, I was greeted by Jeff again. Same great service as last time. When he pulled out my laptop and brought it out, I was so surprised with their exemplary work they did. They even professionally CLEANED the entire laptop and screen. It felt as if it was brand new to of the factory. I didn't expect this and it was a NICE surprise. They even updated my software to the latest OS X which was nice because I was on Mountain Lion for a while... But wait... It gets better... Jeff had ordered some Apple-certified and manufactured rubber footpads for the bottom of MacBooks and put them on for me as I was checking out. Another reason HB Computer truly takes care and looks out for their patrons. But wait...it gets even better... Amir was able to give me the BEST deal, rate and price for his service. I have been working on my laptop for last many years and I got a new lenovo laptop a couple of years ago, it is a robust machine and works perfectly fine, however, one night when I plugged my usb external drive into it to transfer some files, something happened and the fatal blue screen came on and then the laptop turned off. It would not turn on again or power on. At that moment I thought I had lost everything in the laptop as well as the hardware. At that moment, I felt like I would not only try to find a reliable computer repair shop, but someone I could trust, so I started looking up on yelp for a good computer repair shop around my area and came across HB Computers which had a lot of 5 star reviews, which is hard to find nowadays. I called them the next morning and spoke to Amir and he told me to come over to drop the laptop. I took it over in the afternoon and he assured me that the top quality diagnosis will be performed and I will be given a call to let me know what the issue is and what needs to be done to get it fixed. I got a call within the next 4 hours and was told that the hard drive was fried and would be irrepairable and needs to be replaced. Since I had not transferred a lot of data back into the laptop from my external HD, I was ok with losing whatever there was (as I had an extra backup). They replaced the hard drive and installed Windows 7 with all the necessary drivers. I was given my laptop back on the 2nd day and was happy with their service. This is by far the best customer service I have ever had regarding an apple product. Most places overcharge you and take their time because they know you really don't have a choice; but here they work with you and are so great about it. I needed a new screen for my MacBook Pro with retina display, which I knew would cost a lot because of the part itself. When I called for an estimate they offered to match any price and also gave me advice on making sure I get the best care and not a refurbished or old screen. They offer a 90 day warranty on most products and offered me a 1 year warranty. Students get a $30 discount, and the cost of my repair was barely more than the part itself. I was also going to be leaving town quite soon and they paid a lot extra for express shipping without charging me. If it wasn't going to get here on time they would express fed ex it to me or let me pick it up early with a full refund. They are fantastic and deserve your business. read more

It took about a week for my new rig to be built and he threw in a WiFi/BT card for free! Back in August, I had brought my Mac to HB Computers based on their Yelp reviews. It had been running slow for a long time and was at times unusable. I came in and left it with Amir and his team and his initial diagnosis was that it probably needed a new hard drive. After listening to his explanation, I was confident that Amir knew what he was talking about and I was satisfied with his diagnosis. He provided me with a 5 day turnaround and I had my machine back in 4 days and it ran like new. Fast forward to the end of October and I noticed one day that my mac had a flashing file folder with a question mark on it and was inoperable. I googled what to do and ended up reinstalling the operating system which worked for a couple of weeks but ended up stalling out again. Since I had recently purchased a protection plan from Geek Squad, primarily for my home theater, I took it there instead of going back to HB Comps, as the plan included computers. They ran diagnostics and said that the hard drive may be faulty because it was only intermittently showing up with the diagnostics. I opted to then take it back to Amir at HB Comps to let him know what was going on. He had his team run diagnostics and could not duplicate the problem. Although I did not think this wasAmir/HB Comps fault, it was frustrating none the less. Amir did say that this issue in many cases is due to a faulty hard drive and although he could not duplicate the problem, offered to replace my hard drive. I know that this replacement was at his cost and I greatly appreciated that he did this. I must say that even if he had not offered to replace the drive, I would have understood his position and would still give at least a 4 star review of this business, but he went above and beyond. It's been nearly 3 weeks since it was fixed and I've had no recurring issues. Thank you to Amir and his staff! I recommend HB Computers to anyone that needs servicing on their PC or Mac.
