Nov 2022 Update - It was time to use my insurance and I was seen by a friendly eye doctor who checked my eyes and found out that my script was the same. I wanted Oakleys again so this time I chose this pair and was able to get customized features with my insurance. It was about $100 ish after allowances and coverage but worth it. It was ready in about 2 weeks which was fine but I also received a text message that they were ready so they followed up on their promise. I really like having a local optometrist in the area and they did a great job of taking care of me. So now I am set for another year until I decide to get newer ones that is :) read more

Dr. Sim was an incredibly kind and cheerful doctor who made the eye exam process very pleasant. She took extra care to ensure that everything was disinfected before use, and ensured that I was comfortable the entire time. I have nothing more to add other than that I wish the front office staff were more friendly - I walked in and was met by a cold greeting. I wasn't expecting them to jump for joy, but at least a "hello, great, the doctor will be right with you." would have been nice. This was my first time here. I had to make a change because my insurance changed. Everyone was very nice and professional. They checked all payments against my insurance and let me know right up front what my out-of-pocket would be. The doctor, sorry... didn't catch her name, was very thorough and helpful. Totally awesome experience! I really like the personal touch you get when you visit Dr. Sim. I don't feel like I'm put through an assembly line when I come here for my eye exam. Dr. Sim goes in-depth into the state of your eyes at all levels. Dr. Sim is so friendly, polite, patient, considerate, and truly professional. Dr. Sim is definitely the best optometrist I have ever met in my life. During the pandemic, I really appreciated them taking steps to maintain a low in-store capacity, ensuring everyone wears masks at all times, and wiping down optical equipment between each exam. Last of all, I couldn't ask for a better glasses frame shopping experience. Ariadna is super nice, helpful, and knowledgeable throughout the process from selecting the right frame and optical lenses to the best pricing. So far I've been super happy with switching to this optometry office. Dr. Nguyen is very nice and easy to work with. I recently considered progressive lenses, but had no idea what they were like. She took the time to explain to me how they work, what to expect, and how sometimes they don't work for everyone. Upon receiving my lenses and new frame back from the lab, I noticed a problem with the frame (through no fault of theirs or mine). I called them and they asked me to come in so they can examine them and make the appropriate repair. Turned out that it wasn't something that they could repair, but they happened to have an identical, brand new frame in stock. Instead of having me deal with Oakley for the warranty replacement, they swapped out my lenses from my pair and put them into their new pair. I walked out of the office so happy about the excellent customer service, I decided to write a yelp review! Doesn't happen too often, and I really should finish up other business reviews that I still have saved in draft. - Friendly and professional staff. check. Have visited this office on 5 separate occasions since December 2020, and the front office staff is always friendly and courteous to me and to everyone in the office during those times. - Clean office environment. check. Staff and customers wearing masks, hand sanitizer available for customers, and trays for glasses to be sanitized once they are tried on by a customer. - Easy access to free parking. check. Located next to a free public parking garage (with EV charging available for a fee). A few free street parking in front of the business, but I'd recommend parking along Mission Blvd or in the parking garage. I used yelp to look for an optometry in the area. Called a few places that had appts available after work hours or weekends, but everyone was booked out 1-2 months out. Ridiculous. Luckily I found Hayward Optometry. Was able to get an appt at 5:30pm that following Monday and quickly got a quote on how much my eye exam would be with my insurance. When I got there, the front desk person didn't seem too friendly, but I can tell she is efficient and got me checked in right away. I think she is the same person that works the phone and has a better phone personality. Place is located in downtown Hayward, plenty of street parking. The doctor was nice and knowledgeable. Told me she highly recommended getting my eyes dilated and that I can stop by anytime when I have a ride to take me home. My visit only took about 20 mins, from me checking in and leaving. I went home with a trial pair of contacts. Was planning to call them to order a year's supply for the trial contacts, but kept forgetting. A week after the visit, I got a phone call from their office following up to see how I liked the contacts and if I wanted to order them. I got a quote right away on how much it was, and ordered them. I was told my contacts would be ready in a few business days, but the next morning, I got a call saying they were ready for pick up. Talk about fast service! When I went to pick them up, it was a different front desk person. I think she is the owner/optometrist. I asked about the rebate. She said she wasn't sure if the rebate would work since my insurance covered so much of it, but created a receipt that showed how much my total including exam. I appreciated how she made a special receipt with the grand total so insurance could see that I did still pay a portion and warned me that I may not get a rebate. Overall good experience, excellent customer service, and the being open until 6pm on weekdays. read more

Dr. Nyguen is the best, the whole team makes you feel like you are a person and not just a customer. They take a holistic approach to eye care and think about your pocket before you have to. Update a year later: I always feel super nervous calling this place because I wonder what could go wrong. I called and placed an order for contacts. The price seemed way to high and the receptionist called my insurance and said I had a credit. I was told my new price would be roughly $62. Came in to pick them up and it was $162. She said I didnt hear her say the price correctly. When I can confirm I heard $62. I dont apperciate being gaslighted. I highly recommend finding a better optometrist. I've been going here for over 8 years, and so does the rest of my family. Recently, I've gone here per request of my mom. She complained about her eyesight and how watery her eyes have been. Although I knew an optometrist could not immediately fix her issue, I gave her the satisfaction of booking an appointment to see one here. My mom cannot speak or understand English that well, so that is why I'm around for her appointments. However, the reason why we visit this specific optometry is because our family knew there are Vietnamese optometrists who work here and speak well enough to communicate with my mom. To my luck, the currently working optometrist the day we came in did not speak Vietnamese. However, this optometrist, I cannot recall her name sadly, was extremely patient with my mom's inability to immediately follow her instructions (given in English). It made things difficult for her, but she did not lose her cool as I was losing my cool watching my mom struggle to understand her hand gestures. This appointment really showed to me that Hayward Optometry really cares about their patients! As for my own experiences, they've always been helpful to me. I've gotten my glasses through them and also come back every two years for my prescription. They have a large selection of designer glasses but I usually settle for generics as my eyesight is not too bad. I highly recommend this optometry if you live in the area! read more

Estella sim the female optometrist at Hayward optometry has issues. She has no patients and horrible attitude. I have patients but after to long you just have to say something and I did, she changed her attitude real fast, became all nice and patient. Wouldn't recommend this place if your going to deal with her yelling every time she has to repeat herself more then ones. She wouldn't have to repeat herself if she didn't go so damn fast and try to rush you. Only positive here is the receptionist in front, she's so helpful and nice. read more

Had my eyes checked this morning, and I had to do a double take when I walked in to make sure I was actually in a doctor's office. The reception/glasses area is warm, inviting, clean, and smells pleasant, all qualities that put my own living room to shame. Before I had a chance to ponder whether or not it would be socially acceptable to host a dinner party in Dr. Nguyen's lobby, I was called in for my exam. Dr. Nguyen was prompt, friendly, and knowledgeable. She helped me update both my glasses and contact lenses. I was planning to take my rx to some high end snobby boutique because I enjoy the finer things in life, but I was pleasantly surprised at her wide selection of both designer, and value frames. Best of all her office accepts my insurance, because Lord knows I pay enough into that thing every year. read more

I've worked a few doors down from this place for over a year and never even knew it existed. The interior is definitely no-frills, but I didn't mind that at all. I came in for my first visit this morning and was seen by Dr. Nguyen within a few minutes. I explained that my last eye exam was a year ago and I just wanted to see if there was a decline in my vision. As it turns out... there was no decline!!! During the exam we chatted a bit, and she explained that she had recently purchased this practice from the previous owner. She knew that I would be returning to work so she gave me an accelerated exam. As I was led out to pick my glasses, she suggested a few different frames based on my needs. There was no attempt to upsell and I found a pair of glasses that my insurance was able to fully cover. Overall, I felt that Dr. Nguyen was friendly and professional. To summarize: - Easy to schedule appointments - Quick service - Reasonably priced frames available There are TONS of shuttered storefronts in downtown Hayward... They say that the way a business handles small things says much about their attitude and concern for customers. I'm here to second that remark. Yesterday morning I lost a tiny screw in my eyeglasses, one that holds one of the earpieces. I brought my glasses here to have the screw replaced and an affable young woman replaced it, checked the tension on the other screw, and beautifully polished the lenses. Only $5 lighter I was on my way to complete my errands. Beautiful job, and one which amply demonstrated that these good folks won't hesitate to do a minor bit of work and to do it properly. I understand that economy is tough, but without any good customer sevice, no business will last long. This one is no exception, with the way they handle their customer. Asked for a quick check to ensure that there is no changes in prescription (had double vision lately), while looking for a new pair of glasses was turned down. I don't mind paying though as long as being treated properly. Asking for a prescription to take my business elsewhere, same treatment. I guess that's how they run their business. I love the staff. Very professional and attentive. Always looking to help. Specially Dalia, she helped me and went out of her way to provide me with some antifog cloths that I badly needed for my Rx glasses. Without these cloths my job can be very difficult. I work in refrigerated food industry so I am in and out coolers all of my shift and without these antifog cloths my glasses fog up. making it almost impossible to see. Very frustrating. I have recently moved to the East Bay and have been stubbornly avoiding changing my doctors, aestheticians, nail salons, etc. from my providers in San Francisco since I have been seeing them all for so long. I decided to give Hayward Optometry a try. They have a cool website that allows you to schedule appointments online by seeing a calendar of available appointments. They were awesome. Very thorough exam and congenial personalities make this a great place to do an annual eye exam. I was not expecting much from this place but i went here only because I am at a new job and my insurance is only covered at certain optometrists. I was honestly expecting the worst but I was surprised at the quality of Dr. Pham's diagnosis. He is really quick with understanding your condition. Unlike other optometrists I have been to he uses specialized software that zeros in on what he needs to know. No fluffing around with zillions of tests. He nails it. I can completely understand Luisa's review below. She was probably expecting fluffy tests and a traditional hour long eye doctor appointment but it also sounds like she was not cooperative. The receptionist is usually not the brightest bulb on the tree. You really have to understand your insurance perfectly before going in. That goes for any type of medical appointment, you have to inform yourself and not get stuck with unexpected charges. I had this problem in the past and ended up paying more than I should have for frames I really did not like. This time i got it right. There is nothing unprofessional about this place. The only problems are you have to work within your insurance or budget and know beforehand what those boundaries are. It is also a small office and it is hayward so you have to deal with lots of different social categories in the waiting area. The thought of touching my eye scared me but Dr.Nguyen was very patient with me and showed me how to put the contacts in and take them out. I've been going to this place since 2010. I have never really had a problem here until last week. So I made an appointment online for 5:00 pm. When I got there for my appointment, the optometrist was gone for the day. The receptionist told me that online appointments are "requests". Making an appointment online does not guarantee you actually have an appointment. WTF! How was I suppose to know that?!! Especially when you print out the online appointment with a confirmation. Plus, I've been using their online scheduling since my first appointment in 2010. It was smooth sailing back then. So I scheduled an in-person appointment to guarantee that I will be seen. My overall experience with this business is that the staff here don't know what they're are doing especially the receptionist (or office assistant). I know receptionist duties are more than answering phones and filing paperwork. They need to know the process of the business and how insurance works. You can't just tell me you need this pay this amount without the explanation of the price break down with my insurance coverage. If they don't know they should definitely ask the optometrist on duty. And when you ask a question on previous practice, they make you feel like you're complaining or just plain stupid. Next time I am eligible for an eye exam I will be going elsewhere. i will be telling all i know about my experience here, coworkers, friends and family alike.
