HAU TREE Kaimana hotel restaurant had started doing afternoon tea service called Mu'umu'u and Mimosas serveral months ago, once every month . Now they are doing it every Saturday. 55 dollars per person in a private air conditioned room with spectacular ocean views. Even when the air conditioner is blasting on high, the way that sun hits you, it gets very hot. Mary and I had a lovely table off by the side windows had amazing views of waikiki and kaimana beach ocean waves. We had a very lovely man playing acustic guitar the whole time! He did local Hawaiian music and lots of classics. I forgot to get his name. His voice had a very good vocal range and he has good talent! I've managed to try every single spot for tea on our island. This is one of my top favorites! Our server Malia was fantastic. She was so sweet. She started us off with a mimosa with choice of pineapple or pog. I choose pog (pineapple, orange and guava). She brought over hobbs from kauai tea collection. I picked mamaki tea. My friend got spicy chai. However, I wish they had a floral tea pot or floral tea cups. I loved how there were local ladies that had their mu'umu'u attire. Liberty house (Macy's had taken over the local department stores) was one of the best places to get a mu'umu'u. We started off with these vanilla scones with whipped butter and jam. The jam was tangy and not too sweet. This jam should be for sale. It was onolicious! Malia brought over a tier koa wood set of our sandwiches and sweet treats. Because my OpenTable had preferences of my allergic reactions to certain nuts and coconuts, they did alter mine a little more. I would say they're very accommodating! Mary loved the goat cheese puff and I loved the cucumber sandwiches and we both thought the guava tart was the winner! Honestly, everything was super good. We were full and left very satisfied. Parking is free valet or street parking and of course, be sure and tip the valet. We highly recommend and afternoon tea service is every Saturday. Mahalo open table for recommendations

Great atmosphere on the beach away from the chaos of Waikiki with friendly service and great food.

This is my first stop for dinner at sunset whenever I'm in Honolulu. Have a great menu. They particularly good with salmon. The view is always spectacular. It is a small restaurant so reservations are important especially at sunset.

We celebrated our friend's engagement here! It's small yet intimate. We were able to enjoy the sunset and have a wonderful meal. We shared an assortment of appetizers and my the standout was the lomi hamachi - delicate fresh fish with a tomato vinaigrette. Fresh local fish ($42) - nicely seared and went well with the corn succotash. The size was quite small for the price. The menu is pricey but well worth it with the staff, food, and views.

Located in Kaimana hotel. Valet Parking is free during HH or $10 per 3 hrs with validation. Right on the beach. You look out and see the ocean which is great! You pay for the atmosphere. Came for HH. They have limited HH menu with only a burger, salad and fries. Got one of each. The dressing on the salad was delish. Though the description said there was supposed to be baby gem and kale making up my salad, I was given romaine lettuce. Spoke with the waitress and they remade my salad. The burger has a thousand island dressing on it which I got on the side. Burger was average. Fries were served with the burger which it didn't state it was on the menu. Those were served piping hot but the herb fries were already cold. Mixed Drinks typically are $20 which is steep but during HH it's a little less. Service was so so. I kept having to flag them down to fill water, etc.

$100 for a piece of frozen Costco fish and some hamburger helper. $10 to park, sat us in the bar for a birthday, brought the person next to us a birthday cake and brought us nothing. Views was trash, lobby was trash, go somewhere better.

The best kale spinach strawberry feta salad with salmon that I've ever had! We sat at the bar because the weight was really long for a table. The bartender was great, super friendly and attentive. I will definitely be coming back!

We went there for dinner hoping to sit by the beach, however the only thing available on open table was a counter/high top option-- which is where we sat. I wish the set up was better here -- the chairs were so low you couldnt see over the counter top out to the beach (unless you are over 6ft). The drinks were good, our server was nice & seemed knowledgeable but his recommendations just didn't seem to hit (or maybe the menu didn't speak to us). We tried the tempura fish with hot honey & harissa and were not impressed. The fry on the fish was good but there wasn't any flavor and the sauce was unevenly distributed so we couldn't even enjoy that with every bite. The focaccia was perfectly cooked. nothing on the menu spoke to us so we ended up leaving after the fish. Two appetizers & two drinks cost us $100. Probably wouldn't be back for food but would go back for the view & drinks!

This place was a great choice for a nice dinner. The interior is so beautiful and it feels like an elevated island experience. The food and drinks are a little bit on the pricey side but it was very delicious. We are all fighting over who had the last piece of burrata and tomato. We all had a nice time and I definitely recommend this place!

    Sunset views!

Booked a birthday dinner at Hau Tree for the sunset and beachside views! You can book 30 days in advance online which I recommend if you're looking for the specific sunset time to time it right. Very limited parking and we had to valet it which came out to only $10 with restaurant validation. Service was friendly but felt slow. Food was decent but I just wasn't impressed. I've never complained about large portions but why were there so many dang potatoes as the side it was so wasteful and didn't taste that great either. The sunset beach views were great but I wouldn't go out of my way to come back here. It didn't hit the spot for us. Drink: - liliko'i margarita (has tajin like rim) was limey Food: - chip & rainbow caviar - really good! - lomi hamachi - kale & spinach salad add seared ahi - very small ahi - 12 oz washugyu striploin with side: roasted potatoes (do not get this side and it was way too many see pic) side: roasted eggplant

    Lounge seating

I'll start with the good. This restaurant is incredibly beautiful, from the ocean view to the ambience and decor, and the waiting area is lovely as well. If you're going to be dining past sunset, make sure you book bar/lounge seating or outdoor seating, as for some reason the indoor seating is rather bland and sparsely decorated. It's probably pretty during the daytime, but you can't see anything out the windows past sunset. Luckily, the hostess was able to move us to lounge seating, which was really sweet of her!! We ordered the Rainbow Caviar to start and the Strozzapretti and Lamb Chops for our entrees. Unfortunately, there was a strand of blonde/white hair in the lamb chop that I only discovered once it was in my mouth, and I had to pull it out of my teeth. My sister and I both have black hair. When we first told our waitress, the only options she offered us were to refire the dish or to take it off our bill. We asked to refire it, because otherwise we would be left with only one entree. However, upon second thought, I felt it didn't make sense--why would I pay full price for a dish that initially put someone else's hair in my mouth and would now require a longer wait? When the refired dish came out, I asked the server, who was not our assigned waitress, if we would still be seeing this on our bill given the circumstances. He responded saying he's not warranted to answer those questions and promptly took our dish away again. When our waitress came back out, and we told her that the server took our dish away, she asked us why. We didn't know why either. She said she had to ask her manager. Finally, when she brought out our dish, she let us know that her manager had taken it off our bill. We said thank you and apologized for the hassle, explaining that it just feels gross to eat someone else's hair. Then, she made a comment that nobody in the kitchen has blonde hair. It felt like we suddenly had to defend ourselves. I just don't quite understand the need for that comment--whether the hair was from a chef, a server, the wait staff, or even a guest walking by, it has no bearing on the situation. A customer dining at your restaurant should never experience anyone else's hair in their food, and if they do, then it should be taken care of with respect. They shouldn't feel accused because no one in the kitchen is blonde. By the time everything was said and done, our other entree had gone cold and it was just an unhappy experience. We also saw that other diners who were celebrating something received a small surprise dessert--but we did not. To note, our waitress asked in the beginning if we were celebrating and we said yes, we were celebrating our graduations, but we did not receive any dessert. I'm not sure if this was due to the hair issue, but it felt a bit disrespectful to treat us differently than other diners. This is not to blame any one individual, and we ultimately left a 22% tip for the hassle. But I urge the management to set a policy in place for these situations--one that actually places care in the customer without all the hassle.

From start to finish, this was an exception experience. Ocean/beachfront seating on their lanai, with woven lanterns hanging through out. Tiki torches really helped set the vibe. You absolutely need reservations for a table on the Lanai for dinner. Prime times are for the sunset. We were seated immediately and our order for refreshments wasn't long behind. What we ordered: ** a bottle of Chianti wine ** the focaccia bread served with a balsamic whipped butter. ** Mido Caesar salad, , my husband and I split the salad. ** fennel sausage orecchiette ** kahuku golden tomato strozzapreti ** Complementary Guava cake for our Anniversary The focaccia bread was warm and soft. The balsamic whipped butter was delightful. The kahuku golden tomato strozzapreti pasta dish reminded me of the pasta dishes I ate while visiting in Italy. It is a light and flavorful dish, the sweet tomatoes were bursting with flavor. My husband ordered the fennel sausage and orecchiette pasta dish, this was also delicious. Our server was very friendly and prompt, adding her favorite items from the menu. They served us a light and fluffy complementary Guava cake for our anniversary. We loved the whole experience.

Okay, this place is stunning. Plus it has such a great view along the beach! The food was pretty good - the focaccia and rainbow dip was to die for. Pasta felt plain unfortunately. Service was so good. We were so obvious we were tourist and just came by to celebrate a nice occasion and our waitress was so accommodating, even covering our pasta plates while we took a break to take some photos on the beach!

Ask the Community - Hau Tree

    Are there gluten-free options?

Sort of, there isn't "gluten-free" options on the menu but there's fish, and salads. I would also recommend letting your server know as well.

    Are there any vegan options?

What time do they start serving dinner pls?

The capacity of the private room?

    Is there a kama'aina discount?

    Is there valet parking?

Yes at the hotel. There is also ample parking in the street as it's at the end of town.

    Are walk-ins welcome?

For walk-in, the best bet that seems to always have some seating is the gorgeous/comfortable bar. For the lower patio, reservations encouraged.

    Is it baby/kid friendly atmosphere?

    Yes

Is it possible to make modifications to the menu for gluten allergy? Mahalo

    I don't think that's possible.

Hi just wondering if there's still happy hour available, if so where can I find the menu for that, and what are the hours?

Hi Jacy, I posted pics of the dinner and drinks menu back in April. There is a QR code on the menu. Maybe that will give info on possible happy hour specials?

How do you make reservations? I used to be able to online but it's not showing up on Resy anymore

Aloha!! We currently are using the Tock reservation system!

    Is there a kids menu?

As of April/ early May, they didn't.

How's the parking situation? Did anyone know the rates at Kapiolani Patk

They have valet parking, and it may have been $10.

Do you have a birthday dessert plate?

    Yes!!!

    Is this restaurant wheelchair accessible?

    Yes

    Is there a keiki menu?

    Unfortunately, I didn't notice a keiki menu.

Are small dogs allowed at the lanai?

Yes, they are now allowing dogs well behaved

I noticed a few tables had brought their own wine (good wines, likely for a special occasion) - what is the corkage fee?

No idea. I was told you can't do this.

Is the old Hau Tree Menu gone? This is my husband's go-to birthday or anniversary place for years and always ordered the same thing. Sad to not see that menu anymore.

Yes it's gone, but better. Chef Chris Kajioka (Miro) along with Chef Alan (Le Bistro) are serving up amazing dishes. He'll be pleasantly surprised! Enjoy

What is PDR seating when making dinner reservations?

    Private Dining Room.

Our server was very helpful and even brought out a pamphlet explaining each dish. After reading it over, the three of us decided to each try one of the signature Hawaiian combo plates. LAU LAU COMBO (PORK) - 22.99 + poi + lomi salmon The set came out in cafeteria-style trays, almost like a grade school lunch. Our server recommended eating the main entree and lomi salmon with poi, a fermented taro paste. Judging by how it looked, I thoroughly expected the poi to be sweet, but it was actually much more sour, almost like yogurt. I didn't enjoy it too much on its own, but it worked incredibly well with the pork lau lau. The pork was mostly tender and juicy, with a fragrant, leafy steamed flavor that reminded me of the Chinese zong zi my mom makes. The leaner parts of the pork were a bit dry, but the steamed taro leaves helped. The lomi salmon (salted salmon mixed with onions and tomatoes) was refreshing, although the pungent raw onions were a bit much for me. The 'uala (steamed sweet potatoes) had a natural, earthy sweetness that we all enjoyed. Lastly, the haupia (coconut pudding) was incredibly tasty, with a strong coconut flavor that made me sad when I took my last bite. One of my friends got the chicken lau lau, which we actually enjoyed even more. The chicken was delicious, and there was so much of it. Overall, we enjoyed getting to try some authentic Hawaiian dishes at Highway Inn, especially our server and the pamphlet gave us a better understanding of what we were eating.

One note is that we wish there were more squid bits. Overall, a 10/10 would recommend!

Musubi Cafe is such a fun, local gem, but be ready for a wait. We went early, midday timing, and…read morethe line was already about 15 people with roughly a 30 minute wait. It moves steadily though, and it is worth it. Inside is tiny, just one small table, so this is really an order and go kind of place rather than somewhere to sit and eat. They have every musubi combination you could think of, unagi, avocado, cucumber, egg, bacon, ume, tofu skin, shrimp, you name it. I got the tuna mayo onigiri and wished they had packed in a little more tuna filling, but it was still tasty. I also tried the cucumber spam musubi, which was really good too. We came as a group of seven and everyone ordered something different, and everyone loved every bite. My tip: get at least two musubis per person. A few people in our group got four each and had zero regrets. One thing to know ahead of time is parking. It is street parking only and pretty limited, so plan for that if you are driving. Overall such an easy, yummy stop and a great local experience in Waikiki.

We decided to come back the next day and order the "Double Tuna," thinking it would actually have double the tuna. Instead, it seemed like the same small amount of tuna with double the rice! We ordered around eight of them, so it was especially disappointing to find that they were mostly rice. The portions just don't feel balanced. If someone pays extra for "Double Tuna," they're expecting more tuna, NOT extra rice. Unfortunately, it felt like they were really skimping on the filling, and the quality didn't live up to the hype for us.

Good local Hawaiian food restaurant. Street parking only. Small restaurant I believe it was Ono…read moreHawaii on Kapahulu before. Now it is named the Da Ono Hawaiian Foods. Either the owner or the manager seemed like a one man show. He was the server, bus boy, and chef. Husband got the pipikalua short ribs/he enjoyed. Sisters got the pork lau lau which came with sweet potato, rice or poi, lomi lomi salmon (more onion and tomato than salmon). i got the chicken lau lau, again stuffed with chicken, not enough taro leaves. The Haupia was smoky, so either burnt or something- inedible! Only six tables in the entire restaurant. The gentleman that was serving us I believe was also the bus boy, cook, server and cashier! Place is a hole in the wall with missing ceiling tiles and exposed panels above our table (gross!!). Sis loves this dive so we keep coming back!

The owner was very friendly and took the time to recommend dishes for us, including the laulau and lechon kawali. We also ordered the BBQ short ribs. Overall, it was a good experience trying Hawaiian food, but it's just not really our type of cuisine. The laulau was quite dry, and the preparation felt more like meat that had been boiled or cooked in liquid, which isn't something I usually enjoy. The lechon kawali had a crispy pork belly texture, topped with something similar to a salsa, but it didn't suit our taste either. Unfortunately, the cabbage served with it also had some black spots, which was off-putting. The BBQ short ribs were the highlight of the meal and the dish we enjoyed the most. We appreciate the experience and the hospitality, but the flavors just didn't quite match our personal preferences.
