Hau Tree is located at the Halekulani Hotel. We were staying at the Halepuna Waikiki (sister hotel) which is right across the street. I booked our reservations online for our last night in Waikiki 8/20/25. I was hoping to get booked for a time closer to the sun setting but unfortunately 8:00pm was the only time available. The sunsets starts around 6:45pm. At 6:15pm I spoke to Hostess Sharon at the Hau Tree and she was able to change my reservation to 7:15pm. Shoutout to Sharon. Since the hotel I was staying at is right across the street I quickly changed into a dressier attire and was able to catch the sunset set at Hau Tree's grassy area. My guest and I were promptly seated outside near the stage where the band/singer were performing. It was perfect. The 4 stars on this review is for the entertainment. There was nothing on the menu that I really had a taste for other than the ONE golf ball sized Crab cake. I'm not paying $36.00 for a bite size Crab Cake. So I had French fries and water. Yep water. My friend ordered a smoky tequila cocktail that she said was just okay. Maybe the lunch menu is more appetizing because the dinner menu for me was not. read more

Our server, Chloe, was absolutely sweet and attentive from start to finish. We started with the chips and rainbow caviar. The chips were really good, with a nice salty flavor and great crunch. Honestly, I would eat them on their own. The cheese paired with them was delicious. The caviar itself was fantastic, and I especially liked the smoked flavor of what I think was the orange one. I wasn't a big fan of the crème fraîche portion, but that's mainly because I don't care for sour cream. To me, it overpowered the flavor of the caviar, and there seemed to be more crème fraîche than caviar overall, which slightly threw off the balance. Still, I really enjoyed the dish as a whole. The focaccia was excellent. I almost didn't order it since I make that bread at home often, but I am so glad I did. The crust was perfect, and the inside was fluffy with a lovely sage flavor that elevated the entire dish. The balsamic butter it came with was easily one of the best things I've ever had. It complemented the sage beautifully. The whipped butter was soft, creamy, and rich, and the balsamic flavor added a depth I didn't expect. I never would have thought to pair butter and balsamic vinegar, but now it's a combination I'll never forget. The fennel sausage orecchiette was another standout. It was creamy and flavorful, and the black truffle fondue added a luxurious touch. I had never tried that before, but it worked perfectly with the dish. The flavor reminded me almost of lobster, rich and slightly briny in the best way. I do wish the portion had been larger, because I finished it very quickly. For the price and quality, I would have loved just a bit more. My husband and I celebrated our two-year anniversary here, and the staff made the evening extra special. They surprised us with champagne and a complimentary slice of guava chiffon cake. It was absolutely divine; light, airy, and perfectly balanced with the sweetness of the guava and the subtle coconut topping. Even though we were already full, we finished every bite. This was an absolutely fantastic dinner experience in Honolulu! My drink--though I can't remember the name--was delicious. It had a creamy texture with egg white on top and was so good. We started with the crispy octopus, which was some of the best I've ever had--perfectly tender yet crispy. The zucchini chips were also incredible. For my main dish, I had the salmon miso Caesar salad with extra dressing, and it was easily one of the best Caesar salads I've ever had. My group also loved the prawn pasta. You can't beat the view, the decor, and the overall boutiquey vibe of this cute establishment. It's charming - historic Hawaii kind of feel with a modern touch. Service was great. Attentive and polite. Food: this is where things go down hill massively. We started with coffee.. which was awful. Typically we drink our coffee black- but the coffee was just so bad that I had to mask it with tons of cream and sugar and only ended up drinking a few sips Our food took just under 40 minutes to arrive after we ordered. It was an incredibly long wait and when I looked around I realized only one other table had their food- so there was definitely a breakdown in the kitchen today. I highly don't recommend this place for a Valentine's day dinner sadly :( I really wanted to like this place despite seeing some bad reviews but now I understand why they rated it so low. Weeks before the dinner: I called a couple of times beginning February to the hostess to make food restriction notes that my boyfriend doesn't like any condiments, sauces, beef, and raw fish. They informed me they put the note in the reservation so I thought everything was good. FYI, there's also $50 booking deposit to reserve your spot there. The atmosphere was still really beautiful and it had a really nice tropical romantic vibe. The waitress showed us the menu and I noticed it had ALL of my boyfriend's food restrictions LOL. I asked if she saw the food restriction notes on the reservation and she said she did not check so she told us to look through the ingredients on the menu and tell her which foods he can't have. I was disappointed because we would've saved a lot of time if she just read the notes. So me and the boyfriend spent 10 minutes going through the ingredients. I noticed on the menu that some dishes had raw fish and some had sauces mixed in to the food so I told the waitress is it possible to have all sauces on the side and asked if there's another food other option to substitute out the fish. The dishes my boyfriend only liked was the fresh fruit coconut whip meringue, chicken with truffle brown butter hollandaise sauce, and garlic rice. He tried to eat the hamachi but didn't like it so he only ate the pear and I just ate the rest of the raw fishes, foie gras, and the 2nd entrée dish. I gave the rest of my chicken meat and garlic rice to him since he didn't eat much. Honestly not worth the $500 chicken dinner since the service lacked and the Valentine's day dinner menu did not match on what was being served. I recommend that staff should double check the reservations if there's any restriction notes before serving the food and go over the menu's ingredients together thoroughly before we get served the meal. I felt like they didn't bother to even try to inform the cooks and staff of my boyfriend's food restrictions. It's really hard on my end to know what's on the menu for the dinner since it's a prix fixe meal so you don't know what you get until you get there. Hau Tree The Hau Tree restaurant is situated inside the Kaimana Beach Hotel that is near one of my most favorite beaches, the Sans Souci or also known as the Kaimana Beach. With conservation measures well in place, one of Hawaii's endangered species of Hawaiian Monk seal has returned over the last few years to deliver a new pup on this beach property. I asked the hostess if there was a new pup this year and she said yes! A good section of the beach where the Hau Tree restaurant looks over, gets cordoned off so no one is allowed to disturb the mom or her pup. The hostess pointed to where we were lucky enough to glimpse mom swimming in the water near the coastline while her pup was seen several yards away, floating on another corner of the beach, camouflaged so well it was hard to tell which was the baby seal or the other rocks until he would flip over. It was so thrilling to see! Food: They are known for their Egg Benedicts. We both chose the Spinach Benedict that comes with a house salad and breakfast potatoes. There was a nice blend of sautéed spinach, garlic, harissa, chives and their version of hollandaise sauce on an English muffin. Those potatoes enjoyed some time sautéed in butter since the edges had just the right amount of crispy goodness and buttery goodness. Presented very nicely and it was most delicious. The views of the ocean and nice quiet conversation with my sister has become a tradition for us. Parking is valet, I believe, but my sister is a member of the Elks club nearby so we parked there. There is also street parking along Kalakaua Avenue and spots that are walking distance to the hotel. The wait staff personnel were very nice and accommodating. They checked on us periodically and were helpful in offering suggestions from the menu. Talking with the hostess about the very special Hawaiian Monk seal guest and her pup was a rare opportunity to share with us. Choosing the Hau Tree Lanai is the perfect place to sit and relax, away from the noise of Waikiki and enjoy the Island surroundings. Fresh local ingredients are truly presented to compliment their fresh appeal. I arrived at seven for my reservation for the Christmas dinner. The hostess was wonderful, very kind and professional. When the sever approached my table, it was a prefix menu that had two entrée choices. The server opened with there's a few changes to the menu this section the entree we're out of both. I said you don't find that odd on a prefix menu that cost $155 a person and the restaurant can't figure out how to order the right amount of food. No response from him. Let's talk about the food and how embarrassing it is for the Chef that works there I'm shocked the chef doesn't even taste his own food and doesn't even know how to order inventory. The scallop crudo totally embarrassing not sure he knows what crudo is. The falafel was this 2 dried up round balls that when you cut them it just fell apart. Second course this dish had potential if it wasn't floating in oil and the focaccia bread had so much salt on it you could've used it just to salt your food. Entree so they serve the typical sirloin steak that you can get pretty much anywhere and probably better as well with two pieces of asparagus, but at least they cooked it properly. Dessert probably the most embarrassing part of the whole menu and I can't believe the restaurant would even allow such a poor dessert. My question, did the chef stop at the grocery store and buy a rolled peppermint cake sliced it up stuck on a plate and put chocolate sauce and here you go I saved labor and money! Overall, i'm shocked at a restaurant in a hotel that has a general manager, a director of food and beverage, and a chef that none of them tried this Christmas dinner and said to themselves we have a lot of work to do on improving this quality . Instead they went and ruined probably quite a few people's Christmas with the poor quality of food that they served that they couldn't even fulfill a menu that they created and charged $155 per person they should be embarrassed. Hau Tree Eggs Benedict ($27.00) - ham, harissa, hollandaise, chives. Served w/house salad, & breakfast potatoes. 2. Calamansi Ricotta Pancakes ($23.00) - calamansi curd, sweet ricotta, fresh fruit & a side order of two scrambled eggs. Overall, a great dining experience! WOW! I had heard brunch is even better than dinner and I can't imagine! We started out with some Ube Pina Coladas and an espresso martini. The Ube Pina Colada is a MUST try. Soooo delicious (and healthy?) Espresso martini was good but not as good. Our appetizers were oysters and brussel sprouts. Both had a spicy little kick from the red flakes shown in the picture. It wasn't too spicy and added a fresh new taste to classics. We really enjoyed them. Both entrees were also amazing. Steak was perfect and the pasta was decadent. Our server was super friendly and helpful. She got us some flowers to take pictures with as we were watching the sunset. What a view! The restaurant is decorated impeccably. Overall, I would visit again for dinner. It is pricey but worth the splurge for a sunset view meal with amazing service. read more

Amazing service! Make sure to set a reservation because it does get booked up quickly. The lamb chops were tender and the octopus had a great sauce and a crispy outside. If you would like to sit in the lanai, you need to specify for your reservation. When it fills up, you will sit at the high tops but it's still a very pretty view. My partner and I made a reservation for counter seating at sunset. Food, drinks, music, ambience all exquisite. The counter seats overlook the main dining room and the beach. Perfect option for a more laid back but still upscale dining evening. Highly recommend the Ube piña colada, rainbow caviar, local catch. If I could change 1 thing, I wish our counter seats had more elevation to them for a completely unobstructed view over the balcony flora. Also, keep in mind there are structural pillars that could block some seats from a nice view. read more
