One star for the Venue or should I say Staff. Four stars for the show. You make the call on if you are going or not. Take away point: Some of the worst service I have ever experienced.Ever.Ever. And since it was my birthday celebration I was hoping for a lot more. Actually I was hoping for better regardless of my birthday, anything but the waitress saying "people in Long Beach don't tip anyway". I don't like making reviews off of one experience but well, I'm not going back. I really wanted to love Harvelles. The Monster Blues and Burlesque Show got rave reviews and my heart was set on it. I reserved two tables online for $15 each. There was also a $10 ticket price and "2 drink minimum". We made it in time before 9:30. There were 7 tables left. They gave us two in the middle. And there were 5 to our right hand side. Unfortunately we could not see due to the pillars in the middle. We asked to be moved to two tables to the end and (who I'm assuming is Cevin) said we could'nt since someone had reserved 5 tables together. There were 7 tables total. We were just switching. There would still be 5 tables together so we were not undestanding the confusion. His lack of math skills got to me. But whatever we continued. The waitress got there and explained to us that the menu was not able to be modified under any circumstances whatsoever. I explained to her that I was vegan and had other dietary restrictions. She said "Well if you want you can go order yourself upstairs. I wouldn't have minded if she wouldn't have said it so rudely. From there she went downhill. She seemed to be the only waitress, which while that is stressful, that is no need to be rude. She went as far as to yell at the people next to our table because they ordered at the bar when the two drink minimum was supposed to be at the tables. She was rude to my guests. She basically snatched money away from my partner's hand (as she was looking for tip dollars) which was when she said "people in LB don't tip".And overall was rude and disrespectful. If I could give 0 stars I would. 5 of us girls went to see Circus of Sin, Burlesque show. We are told doors open at 8 and show starts at 9 sharp. We stood in line till 9:35 and We had purchased our tickets online. Once inside the room was so over sold you couldn't move. This is not an exaggeration. We get to a spot where you can barely see but at least one of the girls with us can watch and it's not even a circus show. Nothing that was advertised happens . No contortionist, no roe swing it was so disappointing. Harvels thank you for ruining our night out. I will never come for ante entered again. read more

My husband and I visited Harvelle's last night for our "date night" expecting to see a burlesque show. What we experienced was not what we expected IN A GOOD WAY!! What we saw was " The Teledo show". The music was fantastic. Each musician was amazing, especially the Trumpet/ keyboardist & bass player. Teledo (lead singer) was dark, theatrical, entertaining, great voice. Reminded me of a mixture of Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave,STP, James brown. The 2 dancers were great, I really liked the blonde dancer, she was very professional and passionate. We are definitely Coming back and making this our date night spot!! The only thing we didn't like was 1. some of lyrics were "too dark", offensive. 2. Harvelle's is a smoky, dark red bar that occupies the space that used to the The Cellar - there's a small neon sign outside, but it might be easy to miss. Just stand on Promenade Way (not on the street) in front of the Congregation Ale House and look for the stairwell to the left. I came here on a Friday night with Trina D., wanting to check out Bongo Fury (not the Zappa album) - an Afro-Cuban jazz quartet backing a burlesque dancer. From the looks of things, I need to try the place on a Thursday night. The drinks are definitely specialty - it's $9 for one of their mixed/muddled drinks, so it's not cheap, but it will be delicious. I stuck to the Pimms Cup and could have had 4 more, it was so tasty! We also ordered a Roast Tomato & Garlic flatbread, which was good. The food comes from the Congregation Ale House upstairs. In addition to the super funky sounds coming from Bongo Fury, a DJ also provided intermission music -- which was great and loungey and sexy towards the beginning of the night, and then got progressively hip-hoppy and aggressive towards midnight, around the time we left. Overall not bad. I love the atmosphere of the place. The crowd was lively, and nicely mixed across gender, age, and ethnicity. I loved it here and totally want to come back! read more

So, my friends and I bought tickets for a burlesque show at Harvelles. Tickets were $10 and it was $25 to reserve a table so we would all have seats. So all in all it cost about $140 for all of us to see this "show". And they have a 2 drink minimum. So not only do you have to pay for the show, they make you buy overpriced drinks too! Worse waste of money EVER!!!!! The "show" was just a greasy surf band whose lead singer looked like someone trying way too hard to look like Mickey Rourke (in his younger years) and a couple of girls shaking their butts. The music wasn't burlesque music, it was a cross between punk and surfer music. The girls costumes were awful. And between sets, the club - which is supposed to be a BLUES club - was playing dance club music. Needless to say, I will never go there again! I went there expecting to see a burlesque show, some fan dancing, some titillation, and some good bluesy music. I have never been so disappointed!!! DO NOT GO HERE! My likes: Great atmosphere, small cover charge- or none before 9:30, strong drinks, clean, genuinely nice employees, really amazing bands, good vibrations, easy to find. So going here was bitter sweet experience for me, I was sooo excited to go for a friends birthday party Burlesque night even after reading the horrible reviews. Leaving here, meh. We arrived early not realizing we had tickets for a later show but the bouncer was easy going and told us we could go in anyways and hang out until our group got there. As soon as we sat down the waitress started harassing us about the 2 drink minimum, I tried to explain to her that we were early & waiting for a group so we'd like to look over the drink menu first to which I kid you not she gave me a blank stare & said "yeah... so? I need your order now it's a 2 drink minimum" RUDE! we ordered drinks to avoid further hassle. (this rude waitress later LOST my friends credit card, and magically didn't seem to care about the 2 drink minimum anymore because some of my friends weren't even able to order 1 drink even after several attempts to flag her down.) This wouldn't have even been the worst thing in the world, but there was just so many other issues! The seating, awkward. Basically if you don't get the VIP Seating (even if you get the lounge) you won't really see the show. There are poles in weird places & so many people standing, filming etc that you can't see!! And other reviews are right about the ladies room, yuck. The toilet paper is pretty much on the floor & my door didn't even close. The performers were entertaining, I just wish for what we paid that there had been a few more. Still, even after all of this I'd be willing to give it another chance only because of the performers, maybe on a week day since the reviews seem to suggest Tuesdays are the place to be. read more

Long story short, came here last Friday to see the Harlow Gold Show. Everyone was iffy on spending $30 on the table, but let me tell you, it was way way worth it! This place is underground, underneath Congregation and is sexily lit red. Not too big, not too small - bar in the back and seating all around the stage and dance floor. The drinks were stiff, waitresses attentive. The show was plain amazing, seriously SOOO FUN. This would be a great place to take a date or a bunch of friends, it really doesn't matter. After the show was over, the DJ plays pretty sweet music and you can dance on stage or on the floor. No complaints here - will definitely be coming back very, very soon. Oh, if you want to pay for the $15 ticket, the only difference is you stand by the bar/ in the back or just anywhere there is room - you still see the show perfectly. And plus, some of the acts include the girls rolling around and hanging over the bar and on the outskirts of the room. You just get rubbed on more where the tables are at. I have seen them twice and they are sexy, hip, cool, dark and entertaining. The dancers are great; lovely, multi-ethnic, focused and agile, true professionals. I want to honor and acknowledge them for being punctual. The show starts on time or no more than 5 minutes late. There are ten persons including 4 dancers the last time I was there. That's a lot of persons to round up to be parked, set up, and prepared to go on time and these guys do it! Also, they play for a touch over an hour and are back when they say they will be. Thank you so much. That speaks to your professionalism. It is appreciated and does not go unnoticed. FYI to first timers: the show relies heavily on smoke; useful to be aware of if you have allergies or sensitive eyes. Afro-Cuban Jazz Bongo Fury 4 Stars I liked it. One woman was their burlesque dancer and she appeared so joyful. They did three sets, with the dancer present for two. I liked that the band encouraged people to dance and were playful and engaging with the audience. American Monster Blues and Burlesque Show 2 Stars This show is really "gritty". One of their songs is "No Pussy Blues", while I have zero issue with sexual content in songs, it just fell flat, very gratuitous and without any substance behind it. A great contrast to Toledo Show, which can use sexual language, but there is such ownership and emotion and connection of the singer to the words and the singer to the audience you want to holler "YES! I want some MORE!" They went on stage late. My issue with that is the doors open at 8 and whether you've reserved a table or not you are seated first come first served. So I get here by 8:15 and the band was scheduled to go on at 9:30, but actually goes on say 10:15, plays thirty minutes and then takes a break. That rude and disrespectful. There's just no excuse for that. It seemed like one of two lead singers was under the influence of a substance and the other was doing his Jose Feliciano impersonation with his mirrored shades and harmonica. Never again. Boxcar 7 5 stars I enjoyed these cats. Infectious enthusiasm, cool tunes, started on time. There were some technical difficulties with the lead singer's mic, but he handled it well. I liked the array of musicians, bass, guitar, drums, trumpet, sax and keyboard. The singer gives 100% is is quite a showman. Everyone got time for a solo. The seven of them had their instruments cleared from the stage in FIVE MINUTES for the following band! I really liked their professionalism and respect for fellow musicians like that! Dessy Di Lauro 3 stars This show as scheduled to start at 9:30 with Boxcar 7 ending at 9:16 and cleared the stage of all traces of themselves by 9:21. Dessy started at 10:06. In this case there is nothing that was humanly possible for them to have started on time with six musicians who were on time to get set up. This was an administrative boo-boo, scheduling the opener and the main show too close to each other. As a patron, I'd rather be aware of an hour between bands up front, than be told to expect an earlier time that no band could live up to. The pluses are: the band is well dressed and stylish. They are a good band musically, more than competent. Dessy Di Lauro has quite a range and rivals Mariah Carey with the high notes. Ms. Di Lauro was very clear that the music is "Neo Ragtime" and while I liked her pride in and delineation of the music, to the ear it was "good music". I feel capable of distinguishing Rag Time music and I didn't feel clear that this was not R&B or lounge music. To be clear, the music was good, but to distinguish it as Neo-Ragtime was not something I was in agreement with. I was disappointed that this show did not include burlesque. By the appearance of the advertisement, that was a reasonable possibility. Ashley is a great server! She is friendly, attentive, and does a great job of timing herself with the show when she checks in on you. read more

I will not return. I have been to Harvelle's 6 times in the last year but this experience was the worst. 9:30 Show on Saturday night 25 July. 1. After 15 minutes at the Table, I had to go to the Bar to get a drinks because the waitress did not come by to greet us. 2. The bar tender said I should wait for my waitress and I asked him to get her, once she came she was nice but we had to get her again 15 minutes later to get a second round for our table. 3. The show was terrible. The music was a low monotone disgusting voodoo - ridiculous. Disappointing since we stopped in on Friday night and the music was upbeat and fun. The show was a mix of rocky horror picture show and strippers trying to act. 4. The worst part is that we never really got to see the entire show because your bouncer was always in front of us all. When asked to move so we can see the show he replied by letting in 12 people and putting them in from of our table standing up and blocking our view 1/2 hour after the show started. Who lets in people into a show 30 minutes after it started and then puts them standing in front of the table? Your Bouncer does. I will not return - your service was terrible, the show was terrible, the music and the 1 singer was really the worse part of ll and I really doubt any of your employees know anything about customer service. I was very disappointed. I brought visitors from out of town purchased their tickets and drinks told them how in the past I've had a wonderful time and Saturday Night show was a huge disappointment as was the poor service and lack of customer care - non existent. The food was great, the show did not meet my expectations. I got the ticket from groupon, and I would not pay a cent more. The guy who was singing, kept screaming and about 30 mins in, I was ready to go home. It is definitely a bucket list activity, just to say you went and experienced it. Do not rush to get there. I wish that they had a variety of different women, all of them looked the same, I was rather intrigued by the young lady who was a ballerina, most of the ladies wore fishnet stocking that needed repair. The music was good and the ambience is just right. It wasn't too packed and it's below the Congregation Ale House where I also like to frequent. The only downside is the drinks leave something to be desired. I asked if they could make a Dark and Stormy (Meyers dark rum and ginger beer) and they brought me something that tasted like sweet and sour. I went to the bar and asked them to remake it. They didn't have Meyers or ginger beer and substituted Sailor Jerry's rum and ginger syrup. I think if you can't make the drink you should just say so instead of making substitutes and expecting that I wouldn't notice the difference. My friend also ordered a Beefeater Gin and tonic. They brought him a sapphire and tonic. Just little things. I'd come back but this time I'd order at the bar not from the waitress. read more

Went for the Circus of Sin show that I believe is held once per month, at the end of December. After a lengthy drive, I parked in a nearby pay lot for $8.00, since there are very few street spots, and walked about a block to the club. I arrived at the bar, 30 minutes prior to show time, having pre purchased seats at a table, through a discount site. Well, I should have taken it as a sign, when the employee wouldn't let us in, until people left. Approximately 15 minutes after the show started, unhappy looking people started trickling out, and we were let downstairs. I went to the people who were taking tickets, only to be informed that the show was oversold, and the only people who had seats were those who had lined up two hours early. If I wanted to stay, I would have to stand. I decided to stay, after paying for tickets, paying for parking, and driving a helluva long way. Well, the stage is floor level, and people were crowded up to it, about six deep. The only part of the show that I saw, were the tops of the girl's heads. Oh, and when they got done with their acts, they would walk through the audience to get out. So, I did see a girl walk by with a couple of small fire wands. And, from a bunch of catcalling and clapping, I think one of the girls took her clothes off. Oh yeah, my boyfriend told me he could see a girl getting spanked, off to the side, which was pretty much all he saw. Then, the short show was over. I complained by email and requested a refund. I was offered a free ticket to return. No thank you! Tips: If you have to see this show, don't bother paying extra for seats. Even if you get there hours early, there will be so many people standing, that you probably won't see anything. Better idea: Don't try to see this show. There are burlesque shows all over So Cal. Or, if you want to see awesome fire play, check out performances by Fire Groove. If it is something kinky/BDSM that you are craving, head over to Bar Sinister. For the real thing, go to one of the many So Cal Dungeons that have public parties. Don't be scared, they won't bite you, unless you ask. read more

It was my bachelorette party so we had about 10 ladies. Disorganized from the second we stepped foot in that place. Seating was god awful you literally could only see the entire show if you sat right in front of the stage. Hot as hell in there! Ok, the waitress we had was well aware how shitty her service was and never apologized for it once! She took 30 mins to get the first round of drinks to our table didn't have what I wanted took her another 10 to get my order right and then she tried to charge us for the drinks that they didn't have!! Bathrooms were disgusting! People smoking in there....my sister almost got in a fight with some lady over the bathroom and my sister in law almost got into it with the door man! it was all around ghetto and the show wasn't that good and was short! I bought s Groupon for a Table for 4 and when we get there door man tells me it only covers 2 people. Service was bad as well. Only good thing was the shows. This place needs new management. Only wish I would have paid attention to the negative reviews. Update I was given two free tickets for a Tuesday Comedy show by Caitlyn after I posted a negative review from a previous experience with Harvelle's . This time my wife and I had a great time and everybody working there was wonderful. I definitely will give it another chance. If only the previous time I was here would have been as enjoyable. My husband and I went here last night for the Tuesday comedy burlesque show. Overall it was a good experience. It wasn't super crowded, I could see everything just fine, and the server was very attentive. I've read these other negative reviews saying the opposite, but maybe it was because it was a Tuesday night that the place wasn't very busy. I was especially impressed with how nice our server was, as I was kind of being a difficult guest. I didn't realize the drink I ordered had blue dye in it, and I can't drink blue dye as I have a reaction to it. It was my fault, but she was very understanding and took the drink back and let me order a different one. I ordered the black belle, which was delicious. The comedians were pretty funny. I do have to give them extra props, as it seemed to be a pretty tough crowd. The girls were good as well. I was especially impressed with the belly dancer. She had a very commanding presence. I also liked the girl with the swords. The reason I am giving 4 stars instead of 5 is that some of the dancers didn't seem like they wanted to be there. They were attractive and could move in a rhythmic sexy way, but they weren't engaged in what they were doing. Most people probably wouldn't even notice this. But I have been to a lot of burlesque shows and am a dancer myself. It is easy for me to tell when people love what they do vs. are just going through the motion. Overall though, it was a positive experience and I would recommend Harvelle's to others. read more

My friends and I came here to celebrate my birthday. We attended their comedy burlesque show on April 26. The Dirty Little Secrets (the burlesque act) were great but the comedy was pretty bad I won't even get into the headliner, he was horrible. Both announcers were funny and kept the crowd in a good mood. The service was excellent,the venue is really small so you'll have no truouble with the view. When you walk in they take you to your table and the waitresses don't take long getting orders. I was very excited to attend a burlesque show, it was my first time, and I wasn't disappointed. I really wanted to attend Dita's strip strip hooray but I didn't know it would sell out as quickly as it did, so when I heard about this place from a friend I had to check it out. You should check it out too, good location, parking is super close and cheap, close restaurants . You'll have a good time for sure. read more

I have been to Harvelle's once, but had full intentions to go back. The one time I went, we really enjoyed the performers - energetic, fun and fantastic. Who they were I cannot recall, but they were great. We followed friends after bar hopping and were told it would cost us $20 at the door, but when we refused because there was only an hour left until closing, the bar was not even full, and because we had a large group of more than 10 people we were given nothing. It was only when we started to walk away that we were told they would let us in for free. The show was great, but no one came to our table once for service. I'm not sure if it works that way or not, but it would seem to be a good idea. Anyway, since I really enjoyed the music the first time, I was glad when I found a deal on Amazon.com for two tickets to any $10 show. It was half off and my idea of a fun night out. I looked on the calendar for show dates and performers, and how many shows were $10? NONE. I found $5 shows, $15 shows and $20 shows, but no $10 shows. A couple of weeks later I did find one - not on the top of my list, but since I'm moving, I wanted to use my voucher. So, I followed directions and called Harvelle's. Voicemail. Yep, and it says that their hours are 8pm to 2am. And I called within those hours. I only got a voicemail twice, and I left a message. No response. Then I tried emailing Harvelle's, but nope, no response again. Ultimately, I contacted Amazon and after 5 days with no update from the organizers of the coupon, I requested a refund. It's a shame, but then I've come to learn that few coupons are for worthwhile places... sometimes you get lucky, most times you don't. Harvelle's wasn't a lucky shot. read more

I guess this is more of a review for the Harlow Gold Burlesque Show that is featured at Harvelle's a couple Fridays a month. My girlfriend took me here on a date recently (thanks Kitten, you're the best!!!) and we had the best time. Stage performances don't usually hold my attention for that long but this show was very entertaining. The girls are all pretty wild, with lots of shaking, gyrating, humping, sweating and steamy moves. The look on a couple of their faces was intense, these girls are serious and they mean business, Sexy, Nasty, Freaky, Businaasssss! I don't know how much the drinks were as GF had those covered too, but they do have 16oz cans of Pabst. Why settle for 12oz when you can have 4 more?! GF also sprung for table seating and I was happy to have a place to sit as the bar area looked pretty crowded. You'll also get to enjoy a closer view of the stage and that would make it worth the extra money. Doors open at 8pm and the show is supposed to start at 10pm although this night they didn't begin until after 10:30. After the show the dance floor was cleared and the DJ turned it up for the few remaining dance stars. This put a nice finish on the night for us. read more

Sexy jazzy underground speakeasy makes-me-wanna-grab-my-date-right-now music with hot eye candy dancing seductively to the raw beats ... It'll make you flip out of your mind! The setup is a bit different from the Santa Monica location with its own pros and cons ... Pro: You have to walk down a flight of stairs outside to a place that makes you think you might have the wrong location. Open the unassuming door and ... WOW! Welcome to the underground! It's an awesome feeling, like you found a super secret sexy club hiding under Congregation Ale House! Con: The layout can make the place feel not-so-packed, so it takes a little while for the energy to build up. But don't worry -- It will!! If you've tried to sardine yourself into the Santa Monica location, this might actually be a pro for you because you'll have plenty of breathing/dancing room at the LB location. Pro: Toledo Show is scheduled to start at 9:30pm, doors open at 8pm, but there's no rush at this location. This is LB -- We run on beach time! Show up at 10pm and you'll still catch the show without having to push people around for space :) Enjoy some sushi across the street and take your time getting over here :) Con: It seems like the Santa Monica location had more girls dancing for the Toledo Show ... but maybe that's just my imagination. A few more scantily clad women wouldn't hurt! Regardless, the ladies are good at what they do :) Pro: Crazy good DJs to liven up the intermissions and keep the party going! Con: What happened to the 7 Deadly Sins on the drink menu? Is that only offered at Santa Monica, or has it just been that long since I've been to Harvelle's? We have been here twice with friends for the Harlow Gold burlesque show. Quite possibly the most fun per dollar you can have. The cocktails are stiff, very good and (shockingly) reasonably priced. Great Manhattans. The decor is great. Dark, plush red seats. Very intimate. Then comes the show. Great, bass thumping music from all different genres.. Sassy, sexy girls, on stage and roaming through the crowd. Realize that if you sit up close, or near the middle....or in the back. You might get your hair pulled a little. Despite this, don't confuse this place with a strip club. There is no actual nudity and you don't leave feeling dirty and kind of sad. My three-star review is more for the act we saw there on 12/29 than it is the place itself. I think that with the right musical show, the place could be spectacular. However, I was not overly impressed by Boxcar 7. It started out just fine but the lead singer was, how can I put this? Trying too hard? His laughter did not seem genuine, his jokes weren't funny, and while his singing was decent, I just didn't connect with the band. The ambience at Harvelle's was nice, drinks were reasonably priced, and the place was not overly crowded. However, when I return, I'll make sure to scrutinize their calendar a bit more carefully. Bongo Fury, for example, looks like it's more up my alley. read more

Take home point: Amateur. For being billed as a blues place, it's definitely more rock. The walk in tables have a horribly obstructed view, so that you can't see what's happening most of the time. The acts we haphazardly thrown together. I appreciate the idea, and what it takes to do an act like that, but it was a far cry from Dita Von Teese. A far cry. It wasnt awful, but it wasn't good. I will pay a cover for a good show, but here I quickly regretted my investment. Also, some woman kept running in and and out the backstage area (distracting) and and interrupted our experience by yelling the us, soliciting us to bring all our friends. My friend and I went here not knowing what to expect really. But it was a new adventure. The dancers all had holes in their stockings. The lead singer smoked cigarettes the whole time and screamed into the mic. The whole thing might have been a lot better without him period. I don't do cigarette smoke because I try to protect my health so the fact that smoking is prohibited inside businesses then this idiot smoked the whole time was disgusting. I left after 30 minutes of breathing 2nd hand smoke. I would never go back. read more

The show was great and the dancers were very professional! My husband took me for my birthday and I enjoyed everything for the most part. We saw Harlow Gold. Now to tell you about the wait. The doors were to open at 8 but there was no one there to open the doors. We read reviews and wanted to make sure we got our reserved table. So since we had 2 hours to wait we went to the Stave across the street. (The drinks there were top quality). We came back around 9 and were seated in our reserved seats. After about 20 mins a hostess came to us, more or less, questioning us and our reservation. The gentleman of the waiting party made it sound like we were in his seat when there was an empty table right next to us. It was my birthday gift and I had no intention of moving. Fortunately it didn't get hairy. The show was to start at 10 but actually started at 10:30. We ordered drinks but they were really watered down and not top brand. However in all fairness the price was reflected of a watered down drink. The 1st half of the show was entertaining. The break was wayyyyy too long. I actually started to get sleepy. By the time the 2nd half started it took me a while to get into it. This was no reflection on the cast of dancers it was just all the wait time. I would come back but not after working a full day or not having a nap before hand. read more

The Toledo Show on Thursdays is a must see! The good: The music jams - great beats, indecipherable lyrics - but still a great vibe The burlesque dancers - sexy, make me want to take them home fo the night girls The singers - Toledo and his girls (sexy again) rippin it out all night The service - quick and friendly The bad: Too much smoke in the act if you are not a smoker - although it does add atmosphere The ugly: Nothing Seriously, these guys could be charging $50 for their show in Vegas and I only paid $7!!! We came here for the burlesque show which we really enjoyed. The place is underground..most siting is a bar type like high chairs.. After all this is a bar and don't expect amazing food..I think they bring the food from upstairs restaurant.don't think they have a kitchen there.
