This store has so many problems. From rat infestations to expired products. They recently were closed, again, for infestations. So don't expect the products you buy to be sanitary (meats, poultry, etc...). Since this grocery store is the closest to my apartment, I often go in to buy boxed products (crackers, ice cream, Advil, etc) and most of the time I always end up buying the products that are past the "Sell By", "Used By", "Expiration Date", etc... (Yea, even the Advil), which I am pissed about because I'm not getting the best quality/fresh product. I know that Federal Law doesn't require stores to retract items past labeled dates (only baby formula and some baby food), but having it on the shelf for over 2 months past the date is way too long. They don't have a proper stock rotation system in place. So every time I go there, I always have to check the dates and would advice you do the same before buying. read more

ridiculous lines here.. though the selection is fantastic. lots of wine and frozen food. upon visiting, had a lot of trouble finding granola bars and it seemed like i couldn't find employees either. they were by the hair products. was super duper crowded. the layout of the store is peculiar. they have tons of ready made foods, as well as a hot bar but no place inside to eat these foods. the self check out lanes are good and the employees really try to pull you through. overall not into the confusing layout, i like the selection, and don't have much comment on the customer service. the guy that checked me out was super friendly though and gave me free bags and a VIN card discount. read more

This is my favorite grocery store in DC. It's a block from the Metro so I stop there on my way home. There's also a bike share station and a free parking garage. My favorite things about this store are the deli counter, the meat counters, the beer selection, and the self-checkout. On this last point I must single out Bill S. He is a tall bespectacled gentleman with gray hair. He usually runs the self-checkout aisle in the evenings when I'm stopping by on my way home. Bill runs the self-checkout better than anyone I have ever seen. I've never spoken to him because I've never needed to. Bill anticipates what people will need and he keeps things moving efficiently. I do self-checkout because I don't want to f---ing talk to anyone and with Bill I never need to. He really leaves an impression. read more

I've been going to this HT since they opened WAYYYYY back. Before wehn there were less businesses in the area and less condos, it wasn't bad. Lines were fast, quality was good, sometimes you'll snag a great sale. Now.. the last three times I went after work, I just couldn't imagine how horrible it turned out. I thought it was the rain, or the snow that created this obscene line that went all the way down to the frozen food aisle (other end of the floor!). Well coming back on a sunny day after work or on a weekend and the line is still by the frozen food aisle. They only have 4 lanes open and 4 self check out and it's SOOO DAMN SLOWWWWW! There's no conveyor belt to put your food so the poor checkout workers have to individually pick up items scan them then bag them for you. if you want to go grocery shopping and spend an 1 waiting on line, this is the place for you! I'd prefer just going down the street to Giant on H, there's never a line there. read more

Put in an order for a cake on 2/26. O Asked for my order to be ready for my sisters party on 2/28 at 12pm. Came to pick the cake up at 2pm and it wasnt even ready. Waited over 30 mins for the cake to be completed. Horrible service. Wont be returning read more

I work across the street. Am in there almost every day. In general, it is pretty good higher scale grocery. Not whole foods, but better than the high end Safeway. Get a tracking number (membership number/phone), as it will give you better prices. There seems to be a management issue -- many of the staff are new to retail, and show it. Some are stellar. Some are invisible, and a very few appear to be less than pleasant, but that may be merely family training/cultural. The issue of other reviewers as to cleanliness, staff interaction, and other issues of presentation and supplies are correct. I can't tell if the manager is simply overwhelmed, assumes that his staff absorbed training, or the store hierarchy simply discourages their line staff from eyeballing the customer area continually. ... I would be interested in hearing if people experienced good, fresh meat and fish. Especially fish. In general, if you live in the area, they are a plus. read more

Walking inside this Harris Teeter store (near the No-Ma- Gallaudet U metro Washington DC stop) took me by surprise because of its vast size and the diverse selection of food and drinks. One of the items I was looking for was selling out pretty quickly and so I had to ask one of the employees if they had more of the item (it was for the Harris Teeter Fresh Food Farm Market Wheat Flat Breads that came in a package of 5 rounds and 14 ounces). Fortunately, one of the bakery workers enthusiastically helped me to get the second package of wheat flat breads for purchase. Additionally, another employee politely helped me with registering for their discount shopping card program (vic savings) and another employee kindly helped me with a scanning issue I encountered when trying to scan some green granny smith apples through the self check-out register available and an embarrassing moment of my own making when I was trying to pay at the self-checkout with a large bill (due to the significant volume of customers who were waiting behind me to also get their items scanned). In addition to the favorable customer service, I bought among the following other items during my shopping trip; 1 qty Alouette Garlic & Herbs Spreadable Soft Cheese 6.5 ounces, 2 qty cool whip original flavor 8 ounces, 1 qty parmissimo brand formaggini spreadable cheese wedges parmesan cheese based 4.9 ounces, 1 qty Boursin cheese dip garlic & herbs 5.6 ounces, 1 qty Orange Tangerine Brand Juicy Juice 64 ounces, 2 qty Oscar Meyer Brand Bun-length beef hot dogs 8 in each package, 1 qty Harris Teeter Sliced mushrooms 8 ounces, 1 package Next organics brand dark chocolate bananas, and 2 cans of Genova brand albacore tuna in olive oil 5 ounces per can. Fortunately, my husband was also fine with what I bought and relieved at the amount that I paid for what I bought; the overall total after using the Harris Teeter card for the Vic savings was $59.22. There is also a fact listed on the receipt that over $24,127,728 has been donated to community schools through Harris Teeter's Together In Education Program. read more

So i just moved into town and of course i needed a place to do my grocery shopping. Nothing really that special about it though you wouldn't tell from the number of times I go there! - a nice store, clean, the people that work there do whats expected of them. Its not like i love the place but I go there because I have no choice and have been too lazy to discover a different place. And maybe its because I moved from the Midwest where the cost of living is cheaper but the one beef I have with the place is the cost. Its more expensive than many a grocery store I have shopped at. But again its close, on my way from work off the metro and I have been too lazy to go out there and find an alternative. Again whats nice about it is that it looks relatively new so the building and the store itself look very clean. You can also tell that it's an up and coming/gentrifying neighborhood so a lot of other stores, restaurants and other types of establishments associated with such change are slowly popping up. The seafood, pizza, and deli sections are excellent with great customer service. I was a bit disappointed that the selection of foods was not as extensive and well stocked as the other Harris Teeter on Capitol Hill. The representative at the customer service desk was incredibly rude. This place may get better with time. We shall see. read more

Love this HT! Unlike giant, unsafeway stores, HT always has everything in stock. And it's clean and bright! I buy a lot of produce, and haven't found their fruits and veggies lacking. In the past I found the deli counter staff to be not-so-friendly ("...go away, I'm too busy to help you, even if it was my job..."), but the current manager has improved the service there. Great wine selection, especially the cold selection. Prices good. However, the hot bar was disappointing. Wegmans and Wholefoods have great hot bars. Here it was tired and old. The chicken was dries out and tough. It wasn't cheap either. read more

Its a fine,highly organized grocery store that sells food and other products. Cons for me: I love grocery store cake, they never have plain yellow or white cake with a simple layer of frosting available, only exotic flavors I don't eat. Self-checkout machines are slow and controlled by a attendant. There are no UPC code on the .99 cent water bottles. read more

Finally, a wonderful shopping experience in DC! When I walked into Harris Teeter, I had low expectations. Shopping at the Safeway at City Vista had caused me to lose my faith in mankind. As I walked in to HT, I was stunned to see both carts and hand baskets available. What is this, I thought, one of them luxury supermarkets? Then I started to look at the produce....no rotting food......oh my, they actually have that exotic fruit I like in stock.....limes! As I approached the meat counter, I saw a variety of nice cuts and an actual butcher on staff. As I rounded the corner to get some chips, I noticed an employee. I thought - what the hell are you doing here (I have never seen an employee on the floor in safeway), shouldn't you be talking on your phone near the front of the store and ignoring customers. As I approached, I received a friendly hello and this young lady was able to answers two questions I had, being a first-time at HT. The biggest shock came when I approached the check-out. I was mystified when I saw that ALL of the self-service check-out lanes were operational and the numerous cashiers at the other check-out stands were actually attending to customers and working efficiently. In all seriousness, the team at HT is doing a great job. Safeway - NEVER AGAIN. Sometimes, you forget what good service is like when you have been deprived of it for so long.
