Happy Together in El Monte seriously exceeded expectations. Everything we ordered was on point, but a few dishes really stood out. The shrimp dumplings were fresh juicy, and definitely a must-have. The coconut crispy chicken had that amazing crunch on the outside with coconut favor while staying tender and flavorful inside. But the highlight of the meal was the roasted duck. Super crispy skin, and rich flavor. It had the little candles underneath the plate to keep the duck warm. It's easily one of the best I've had in the area. Great food. Highly recommend if you're craving quality Chinese dim sum.
Connected to the Hilton Mall, this place has really good Chinese food. The food doesn't feel greasy at all. Came here during Chinese New Year and other times for Dim Sum. The roasted pig was super delicious, the skin was crunchy, and the meat was moist and cooked to perfection. During dim sum, the food is ordered via paper. I would recommend the rice noodle with soy sauce (it was so so fresh, I ordered it a second time). Service is good! Everyone is friendly and fulfills requests pretty fast. Lots of seating as well!
This restaurant is located inside the Holiday Inn and parking can be extremely challenging especially on the weekends They're open daily 10am-3pm & 5pm-9pm Dim sum is $6-7/dish and $2.50/person for tea (there's an option to bring your own tea for $1.50/person) Inside was spacious with plenty of seating but wished there was more room in the lobby for those waiting to be seated NOTE: my pics are of takeout I've gotten there. However, I have dined there before but just didn't take any pics! I came on for Sunday brunch and got there around 11am so wait time was over an hour Service was not very attentive since they were busy The dim sum was very delicious. The siu mai were huge and consisted of 4 pieces. Each piece was stuffed with plenty of pork that wasn't too fatty and shrimp. It wasn't too salty but not too bland. Definitely recommend! The tripe was slightly spicy but very good. It was packed with flavor and was very tender. The Coconut Crispy Chicken ($16.88) was so crispy and the chicken was so good. The meat was tender and the skin had a hint of coconut taste in every bite. Definitely a must get! Overall, the food was very delicious but the service could use some improvement.
We came here for our first time and the food was good. Only the chicken was a bit dry, in my opinion. Service was awesome. Staff was very attentive. I made a reservation a week in advance and good thing I did. Looked quite pack during dinner time. Easy parking. Saw they have dim sum in the morning. Will be back to try dim sum next time.
Came in to Happy Together with my girlfriend for dim sum with another meetup group. We arrived early and were able to find parking quickly. Others struggled to find a space. There was a serious line well before they opened their doors at 10AM. Fortunately there are some benches and chairs for people to sit in while they wait. Service was slow but the food was probably the best dim sum I've ever had. Pretty good selection of items and reasonably priced. For 8 of us our bill came out to $35 per person including tip. We even had some leftovers that a few people took home with them. I'll definitely return, like I mentioned above this was a very tasty dim sum experience for me. While Happy Together doesn't have carts that they push around from table to table they take your order to the kitchen and return with your food. In a way the relatively slow service worked out for us as most of the meal was paced such that we were able to eat most dishes while they were hot.
One of the better spots in SGV for dim sum! My party of 5 came on a Saturday afternoon 15 minutes after they opened and had to wait about an hour and a half before finally getting seated. They have an online waitlist which made it convenient to check on our queue placement. The interior is pretty clean and spacious. Because it's shared with the Holiday Inn hotel parking lot there was very limited parking and it was difficult to find since it was busy. There is parking on the street or the McDonald's lot. We ordered 8 items totaling to about $100 and the food was fresh and really tasty! My favorite items were the shrimp rice noodle roll (cheung fun) which was really chewy, the half steamed chicken which they gave a generous portion of, and the baked bbq pork bun which had a flaky top and bits of corn flakes on for a nice crunch. In terms of service, specific workers are really attentive and nice, filling up our teas and clearing items but some of the waiters were okay with service. One of the waiters had brought out the wrong chicken item and the waiter bringing it out pretty much dismissed/ignored it, but upon calling the manager, they were able to take back the wrong order and bring out the right item. Overall I enjoyed the food a lot and it was worth the wait considering I had company to talk to. If you come on the weekend be prepared for long waits and get on the waitlist as soon as they open!
Come early or be ready to wait! We came on a Saturday at 10:07am and barely got seated since people were waiting since before they opened at 10am. Food was so delicious! In particular, their cheung fun is phenomenal... super thin and full of ribbons, not the thick layers that most places have. We unexpectedly found out that they had a promo BOGO on Steamed Ginger Chicken and Soy Sauce Chicken. If you order half a chicken, they'll serve you the whole chicken. For four people, we ordered 7 dim sum items and 1 steamed chicken (half), it came out to $100 including tax and tip. We had leftover chicken! That's a great price for delicious dim sum and good service. Although, I hate when dim sum places charge for tea per person nowadays (it's $2.50/pp). Of the many, many dim sum options around the SGV area, this is my current favorite for their BBQ meats quality and superior cheung fun.
The food is really good. Got the lamb pot and it has bamboo and it wasn't games! Very rare combo. The chicken was crispy and juicy, not dry. Clams were on the small side. The pumpkin with fried salted egg yolk could be crisper and better batter. All the food overall is really good. The AC was on and cold enough instead of being stuffy. Area of Improvement is the staff. I asked for a fork and spoon for my kids and it took more than 3 times...all differently waiters. For the crab, no utensil shell cracker was provided or wet towels. No desserts like red bean was provided or oranges even after ordering live seafood (crab). Overall I'll come again for easy free parking and the good and tasty quality of food
Very good experience!!! Excellent services with very fresh and delicious food. No wonder there are so many people waiting in line even on a Monday. But the line goes pretty fast. The restaurant is nice and new. The problem is the hotel staffs, the hotel Frontdesk and security refused to let the restaurant customers waiting at the hotel lobby, even they are not busy. I feel that it is very unnecessary to ask people to wait outside, even when the hotel have no customers. Five stars for Happy together!!!
I really like happy together, despite the long wait times. I guess that's how you know if a spot is really popping or not. They do really have some of the best churng fun's out here in the 626, and their crispy noodles with that gravy is pretty legit. This time around, I was able to get a picture of their amazing coconut chicken. Come early or come late, but come on time, you'll have to wait lol. Parking also get pretty packed, but i always just park on the street and walk.
I brought my family here on Christmas day and it was not too busy. They asked if we had a reservation but still got seated right away. Parking wasn't too bad. I came before on a weekend and ended up just leaving because it was about an hour wait while a friend was circling looking for parking. We just ended up going somewhere else to eat. The service was so-so, they were more focused on the bigger parties. We had to flag them down to get service. We couldn't even ask for hot sauce. They kept asking us to wait. The food overall was pretty good. No complaints there. This place might be ideal to host big groups though since this place seems to cater to them more. Overall, it was a decent experience but I probably wouldn't choose to come here again.
We were invited to our friend's birthday dinner. Many of our friends in SGV have always said this place was really good. We never had the chance to try it until today. Here's what we ordered: 01. Crab Meat & Fish Maw Soup $22.88 - 2 Stars - I tasted NOTHING but bland soup. It should be collagen-rich, have a silky texture with a deep umami flavor, but it only had a silky texture. And the color of this sour was so white. Not a fan. 02. Diced String Beans w/ Shredded Meat & Veggies - $16.88 - 3 Stars - I've never had the string beans cut up into small pieces like we had it here. It was decent but a little bland. It looked tastier than it was. Needs more seasoning, it could've been better. 03. Beef Chow Fun $16.88 - 4 Stars - So far was the best item that came out. Classic flavors that we all expect from Beef Chow Fun, savory with a bit of smoky flavor for stir-frying on the hot wok. We all liked this one. 04. Roasted Pork $18.88 - 1 Star - The skin was not crispy at all. All of us were not able to bite through the skin, that was how chewy it was. We had to let our waiter know as this is one of their signature dishes. Our friends confirmed that this was the worst they have tasted from all of their visits. Meat was chewy and a bit too oily for us. 05. Walnut Shrimp $22.88 - 2 Stars - The portion on only half of the plate. Our friends even mentioned that this is not their typical portion sizes. This dish should be sweet, savory, and creamy, with a contrasting crunchy texture. The Mayo/Honey or Mayo/Condensed Mike ratio was different here. The coating of the sauce was sticky and thick. The Shrimp was not crunchy but soggy. I don't think it's half to charge full price for half a portion. Super disappointing. 06. Stir Fried Clams w/ Basil and Veggies $21.88 - 2 Stars - Barely any hint of Basil (we could hardly find any in the dish). This is usually one we all love but it was just flavorless. Can you see the sauce in the photo? We couldn't either. 07. Bullfrog w/ Hot & Spicy Sauce $23.88 - 2 Stars - I'm NOT a fan. I know frogs are small in size but the pieces were so small that we couldn't tell if it was crispy batter vs. Bullfrog. This was not our group's fave. I looked peppery, but it was bland. This dish usually has a kick from the black pepper, not here. 08. Seafood Tofu Casserole $19.88 - 3 Stars - This was meh. The silken-tofu was super soft and the sauce was umami, which we enjoyed. Simple and comforting in taste and texture. 09. Braised Eggplant w/ Minced Meat $16.88 - 3 Stars - This is one of my fave dishes at any Chinese restaurants. I love it's savory, slightly spicy, and aromatic sauce that perfectly coats the tender eggplant and thinly sliced pork. We enjoyed this one most out of the rest. 10. Steamed Chicken (half order) $23.88 - 4 Stars - This was our 2nd fave item from our dinner. The Chicken was tender, juicy and perfectly poached. The ginger/scallion sauce was savory and tasty. Chicken had little meat ratio but enough for us to enjoy. Definitely recommend this dish if you dine there. 11. French Style Beef Steak $22.88 - 3 Stars - This dish reminds me of the Vietnamese Shaken Beef, except that the steak wasn't as tasty. In the menu photo you don't see mushrooms, just meat. When we got this dish, there were a lot of mushrooms. The steak was tender but didn't have as much flavor as you'd think looking at all the pepper on it. It was just ok. LOCATION/PARKING - It's connected to a Holiday Inn, parking is a bit tough if the hotel is filled with guests. CUSTOMER SERVICE - They are friendly but depending what you ask or and who you ask, you might get a little attitude. You don't get the same waiter/waitress, they rotate from table to table. VERDICT - Would we come back? I would not for the quality of the dishes we ordered. I think we tried one item from each category and I'm not a fan. Tasteless Chinese food is a "NO" for us. Prices are a little more than other restaurants but the taste was just not good. My friends agreed that it has changed so much from all the times they dined there. We wonder if they changed chefs. How can the taste be so different from all the times they have visited? Maybe Dim Sum is better but I'm not willing to drive to try it.
This place is located inside the hotel. A lot of parking, and easy to find. It is a very nice restaurant and the staff were very nice and friendly. My friends and I enjoyed the corn flower soup, it was one of my favorites. Their Peking duck had some good flavor to it. They definitely provided a lot of buns for it! The restroom was inside the hotel, so we had to walk out of the restaurant. Its all connected so we didnt have to be exposed to the elements to use the bathroom. Ambiance was chill and we enjoyed each other's company, and we were happy together. Will return. read more
Great dim sum in the SGV with amazing flavor. We got the usual fixings such as chicken feet, lotus leaf, bbq pork buns, and more. Their 50/50 braised and stewed chicken is amazing and I would get again. One star off due to the service as we had a rude server! The place is also packed and we had to wait 45 minutes so if you were to come, arrive early!!! Nice interior and fairly clean! read more
Had dinner here and really enjoyed it! They open at 5 PM, and we were seated right away. The staff was very attentive, keeping an eye on guests and double-checking orders after they were taken. The restaurant was also very clean, which was nice to see. We ordered the stir-fried flat rice noodles with chicken, spicy cucumber salad, and golden sand pumpkin sticks (fried pumpkin with salted egg), plus a side of rice. Portions were generous--especially the cucumber salad, which was much bigger than what most places serve. The dressing had a great mala kick, but the cucumbers could have used a bit more salt. They still had a nice crunch, though. My favorite dish of the night was the salted egg yolk fried pumpkin--crispy, flavorful, and definitely something I'd order again. They also sell Chinese barbecue, like roast duck and chicken, which looked really good. Our whole meal came out to just over $45, which felt like a good deal for the portion sizes. At the end, they gave us complimentary red bean soup--not the best, since it was pretty watery, but a nice touch. The server also offered to package our leftovers for us, though we opted to do it ourselves. Overall, great service, big portions, and some standout dishes. If you go, definitely try the golden sand pumpkin sticks! read more

The main thing I come here for is the Coconut Crispy Chicken. Do remember to get it whole and uncut for the whole experience. Probably one of if not the best Canto styled chicken I've had in Southern California. We usually come for either dimsum or family style dinner. One of the better dimsum spots and canto restaurants. Parking sometimes is limited and the wait depending on time of day will also fluctuate. It is pretty popular so I do suggest going earlier during the rush hours. read more

Foods decent 8/10. Service is quick. In the Holiday Inn. The egg tart was the best. Coconut chicken was interesting. Rice roll would've been better with more filling. Spare ribs also garlicky tho not much black beans. It's okay. Not comparable to HK, but good enough here. read more
A dim sum place located inside a Holiday Inn in El Monte that is pretty decent. Came here with my family on Saturday before 11 and we got seated right away. Luckily, we were able to get a table because after us, more people started to come and the wait was even longer. This place doesn't have the carts showing you the dimsum instead its paper based where you order from a sheet of paper. We ordered the turnip cake, leek dumpling, egg tarts, steam rice rolls with beef & corn, steam rice rolls with shrimp, spicy wonton, custard bun with mochi, shrimp and cheese egg roll, steamed chickens feet and siu mai. The dim sum is pretty decent but the chicken feet had no flavor in my opinion. The custard bun with the mochi wasn't consistent with the mochi because 2 of 3 buns did not have mochi. I would skip on the egg and shrimp eggroll, it was nothing special. The food took a while to come out and I was hungry waiting. When the most of the food came out at the same time, I stopped being hangry. read more
Came at 11 am and it was already a 30min wait time. Parking was not too bad cause the place is next to Holiday Inn. You check in on their tablet. Inside is very busy and bustling with activity. It can be kind of crowded. Service was quick though and food came out fast. We tried several dim sum dishes and they were all delicious overall. Pricey but there are pricier places so can't complain. The steamed rice roll with beef was a bit lacking cause they were stuck together and barely any beef. Everything else was good. read more

Stop by today because it's almost lunar new year. I was trying to order the barbecue duck and the reception ladies or cashier ladies saying the guy who in charge of the barbecue they are no longer cut any meat for this few days because they have been cutting a lot! ! ! I've drove almost 30 minutes and leaving with nothing. read more
Had an awful experience at Happy Together. We waited an hour to be seated on a Sunday morning which is understandable for dim sum. Once seated, service started off fine with a menu and tea. The food arrived in a reasonable time, but it was average at best. Nothing really stands out compared to other spots in the 626 area. The only thing I can honestly recommend here is the roast duck. The biggest issue? The service! One server brought out our beef balls and barely gave us just one sauce for two orders (look at my pic). When we asked for more, she straight up told us, "you guys have enough sauce," and walked away. Seriously? Who does that? Very stingy behavior. On top of that, some servers were clearly sick, coughing into their hands and then handling food without washing up. Absolutely disgusting. I see no reason to come back. With so many great dim sum places around, save yourself the trouble and go elsewhere. Good luck to those who decide to come despite knowing about this restaurant's glaring drawbacks. read more

A very solid location for dim sum in the SGV area. The spacing of the tables is better than other places and you get to order via paper. Better come early though because the wait can be up to an hour. Thankfully they are used to people hanging out in the lobby of the Holiday Inn to wait for a table. What stood out: + Beef balls: I believe it says these are handmade. You can taste the freshness of the meat and it has a nice "bounce" to the texture. + Char siu puff pastry: Nice and flaky. The char siu has a unique flavor to the sauce that I couldn't point out what it was, but I think it wasn't overly seasoned and just right with the puff pastry outer shell. + Shrimp dumplings: Good amount of shrimp and the glutinous outer wrapping was a nice texture without being hard. read more

We enjoyed a 廚師發辦omakase dinner by Chef Ting 廷師傅. There are special dishes which are beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. Lobster in pepper sauce cooked just right and flavorful. The Japanese beef is unique with a touch of wasabi. You also get a show by Chef serving special rice at table side, delicious. Ambience of the restaurant is nice and services were attentive. If you like to try dishes are both creative and delicious, you should definitely come here. read more
This dim sum spot (and evening Cantonese dining establishment) is located inside the ground floor of a Holiday Inn. The hotel lobby serves as the waiting area, and there's a lot of space to sit and wait. And boy, did we wait on a Tuesday lunch hour. Arrived at about 11:30am and the wait was about 55 minutes. It surprised me because it was a Tuesday and packed. You join a waitlist using a tablet and enter your phone number. They will send you a link where you can track how many tables are ahead of you and will text you when your table is ready. The menu serves traditional Cantonese dim sum fare that is pretty good though we only ordered a handful of such options. The prices are decent and we were surprised to get 10% off on our bill. My mom really enjoyed their individual soup bowl that had some kind of dried mushrooms, chicken and pork. It was about $11 per bowl (per person). Having gotten used to ordering Macau-style mini egg tarts at dim sum over the last couple of decades, this spot only sells traditional egg tart (with the glossy top) and they weren't filled with too much egg. It was tasty anyway. The service was fantastic and the restaurant has a lively vibe to it. Inside, they have a small counter for Chinese BBQ takeout. Two minor gripes: 1. The seafood crispy chow mein wasn't crispy at all but the portion was incredibly generous and the seafood was very fresh. Often times, I have had to toss aside some of the seafood but I didn't with any of theirs while eating there or as leftovers. We had A LOT of leftovers from the chow mein. 2. The stewed beef intestines/offal with radish tasted good but the pieces were too big. You've really got to love these innards to want such a mouthful. They would've been more enjoyable cut up smaller. I can only imagine how busy they get on weekends for dim sum (and I will leave it to my imagination). Their dinner menu looks pretty cool and you can pre-order roasted goose for $149 a day in advance. I've never seen roasted goose in the U.S. so may give it a try with my family for a special occasion. Tip: Ocean Island in Monterey Park is my favorite spot for dim sum at the moment. It's a hole in the wall with only a couple of tables where you can sit and eat your takeout dim sum so no table service. Their menu is as comprehensive as a dim sum restaurant and priced cheaper and honestly fresher than some restaurants. They can also have a pretty long line sometimes but it's totally worth the wait to take a dim sum feast home. They only accept credit card for purchases $25 or more, I think, so bring cash. And they do run out of things and you may have to wait 20-30 min for the next batch so go with a flexible appetite or schedule. :) read more

I love coming here because of free electric car charges. Note: now the chargers are now for hotel guests only :( Anyways, this place has good dim sums as well as good food. My family have been here for both dim sum & dinner. We love their crispy coconut chicken & roasted pork. This location is always busy when I visit, but service reminds good. read more

Quick Summary Really solid dim sum spot. The food is freshly and well made. Service was pretty good for dim sum standards. Parking is a hit or miss since the restaurant uses parking in the Holiday Inn Express. Pretty good prices as well. Food- 5 stars Pretty good quality and fresh dim sum at pretty good prices. Some of the best sticky rice lotus leaf wraps and baked buns around the area here. Everything is really solid and fresh, and their unique speciality is their coconut crispy chicken which is pretty attractive if you get the full chicken. You get close to the quality of a Lunasia at a much lower price Service- 5 stars Similar to most dim sum restaurants, you do have to flag the wait staff if you need something. Otherwise, the servers were pretty attentive on clearing out plates and getting orders out efficiently Ambiance It's not as tightly packed as other dim sum restaurants. There's plenty of waiting area since it's attached to the Holiday Inn Express. It just can be a wait during weekends and there's not much to look around if you're waiting, since it's not attached to a larger strip mall Bottom Line Really good dim sum at great prices. Yes I know, a restaurant inside a hotel...bound to be expensive. Its comparable so for lovers of dim sum, don't let that keep you away. In fact, they offer a great deli deal...buy a half chicken and get the other half free...we got half steamed chicken and half soy sauce chicken very moist and well cut...only $24!! Great deal. 5/5 Chicken tender and pretty to look at. See pic. As for dim sum, we arrived at 11:30 am on a Wednesday and had to wait in the lobby of the hotel for 40 minutes. As theyve only been seating and serving starting at 10 am. Busy busy place. A good sign. Mostly Asian faces, another good sign. They have the Chowbus wait list app, meaning you sign in on a computer pad at the matre'd station...the maitre'd helps you if you are not used to this, and you are sent a link on your cell phone, easy peasy to track when your table is ready...so we watched TV new in the lobby and took holiday Christmas pics with the lobby decorations. Time well spent with mom. Okay the food. It's good. We liked everything dim sum, except the soy sauce chow mein was very very very dry, so dry, it was hard to swallow , chokable dry and kinda light on bean sprouts. That said, no worries. Great for take home and after doctoring it up with a bit more soy sauce and water and heat, it was delicious. Mom's favorites, mom gave a thumbs up to the following: The turnip cake fried perfectly, golden brown,crispy edges... it had a strong flavor of shrimp even tho you don't see any in it. Mom gave it 5/5...since i dont like strong shrimp flavor, 4/5. The char sui is delicious order it even tho the sweet sauce comes across as a little watery. But the pieces are large, sweet yet savory, good bbq. 4/5 one star off for watery juices. The pineapple bun is an enticing sight, ordered it after seeing many other diners order it. There's an actual chewy pineapple chunk in the middle, and the custard filling is orangey in color, the overall taste is eggs. Mom gave it a 5/5, me I don't care for edginess, do 4/5...i took it home and it was awesome with coffee. The sui mai 5/5...large with big pieces of shrimp inside. Mom loved it. I didn't eat it due to a shrimp allergy. Overall, it's a recommend. Staff was busy but friendly. Easy to flag someone down for water, extra napkins, to order from the deli. The deli person had a big happy smile and demeanor. Don't forget the half chicken deal is cash only. You can use credit for the dim sum. read more

Ever since covid, it has been hard to find a dim sum spot in the 626 that has the consitency, quality, and value that you would want in an amazing dim sum spot. However, I am glad that Happy Together has been able to provide that for me and so many other people here. Located on the side of a hotel, we came around 11AM and was able to be seated very easily after 20 minutes. After we marked down everything we wanted to order, all the food came so quick and I have to say, you cannot go wrong with this place. Everything is so flavorful and delicious without breaking the bank that we definitely ordered way too much food for just the four of us. My personal favorite: Although a bit basic, it had to be the shrimp rice noodle roll. The rice noodle tasted just leagues above what I am normally used to from dim sum, with nice tasty shrimp to boot. Was a pleasant surprise for a common staple. My coworker has been raving about this dim sum spot. I decided to make my way over since I was in the area. Happy Together is connected to the Holiday Inn Hotel, which had good amount of parking. It open at 10am and we got there at 9:50am. There was already a line. The space was on a smaller side than regular dim sum restaurant in the 626. It can get crowded fast. On to the food: Beef and Cilantro Noodle- I really enjoy their noodles dishes. It more noodle than toppings but flavors are there. It's really filling too. Bbq and Corn Noodle- it was good but I enjoyed the beef noodle better Shrimp and Chives noodles- my least favorite but okay. Shrimp dumpling- my favorite item here, it was freshly steam and hot. The skin and flavors were good Shrimp and Pork Siu-Mai- average Char Siu Puff- I enjoyed this dish. Nice and flaky but wish there was more filling. Homemade beef balls- I did not like this at all. The orange peel or I'm not sure what the flavors were but it overpower the beef. They do offer bbq items and different type of congee that I want to come back to try. The restaurant is nice and clean and you mark your items by paper. There are no carts here. The ladies who deliver the dim sum are super friendly. Service is a bit slow but just sit back and enjoy your tea. It's more expensive here so get your money worth. Pretty solid dimsum spot! We came on a Sunday afternoon and waited about 40 minutes for a party of 3. We were getting hangry but it was with the wait. I'm not really sure what the hype is about. We came for dimsum and ordered some standard items but everything was just okay overall. Didn't seem worth it for $20/person. Food (3/5): ordered bbq pork and corn rice rolls, shrimp and onion rice rolls, shrimp dumplings, shrimp & pork siu mai, shrimp and chive dumplings, and both baked and steamed bbq pork buns. The menu is pretty limited overall. Everything was pretty average, but I was especially unimpressed with the rice rolls even though the presentation was unique. The rice paper was so thin and stuck together/hard to serve yourself, and the fillings were all outside of the rice rolls. The rice paper for this and the shrimp dumplings were more on the mushy side rather than the chewy side. Not sure if it's supposed to be like that or if it was just oversteamed. I will say the tie guan yin tea was good- $2.(0/person. Service (3.5/5): I feel like it's standard dimsum practice to get tea when you sit down, but we didn't really get any type of service until after we ordered. After that it was relatively efficient. Experience (3/5): The restaurant is new and relatively modern, but they're very Asian in how they want to cram as many tables as possible into as little area as possible. We were literally elbow to elbow with the table next to us. We were also seated right next to the sauce refill station and one person was seated at the end of the table super close to where they were processing takeout orders. Pretty much only big parties (6+) get more space. Even though we arrived at 10:30 on a Saturday, they ran out of high chairs, and we had to bring our own travel chair in. Plenty of parking outside. First things first, go there as early as you can, go there and wait for the door to open. That means go there at 10 am or 5 pm when the business opens to avoid waiting. I arrived at 10 am, and about 20 people were already waiting at the door. Once we were seated and got served, new customers were waiting for empty tables outside. Every Chinese loves Chinese food, but for me, not that much, although I still enjoy some dim sum occasionally. The inflation is high, especially in Chinese restaurants. It can easily cost $30+ for just one plate of 8 pieces of fried buns and one bowl of Taiwanese thin noodle soup. Plus tips, it's more than $35, whereas you can probably get those for $5 in China. I haven't been to a Chinese dim sum restaurant in over a year. Firstly, there aren't any dim sum options near me; secondly, I can make them myself. Nowadays, you can even buy good quality pre-made dim sum online. I don't mean the typical consumer-level frozen packages; I mean good quality restaurant-level pre-made dim sum. Happy Together is located on the first floor of the Holiday Inn, El Monte, a typical Chinese residential area. Several Chinese banners about EB-5 investment visas were hung across the street. I guess most of the servers in the restaurant speak better Cantonese than Mandarin or English. There are three types of dim sum restaurants. One type is where you buy the dim sum at the counter and bring it to the table yourself, like Yum Cha Café in multiple locations. The second type is the traditional Cantonese teahouse style, where servers pull a cart filled with fried dishes and steaming foods in bamboo steamers. Customers can pick the food when the cart passes by, like at New Capital Seafood Restaurant in Rowland Heights. The third type is the order-cook-serve style, which is usually more expensive but my favorite, as it ensures the dishes are freshly made. Happy Together is the last type, where you order and wait for the food to be served. The service was quick--only several minutes after placing the order, especially since we arrived early and ordered early. We were three people, and we had 8 dim sum dishes and a two half-chicken combined plate. Let's talk about them: Steamed Beef Tripe w/Ginger $6.38 No obvious ginger flavor, which was okay for me. The beef tripe was thick and tender, with good texture and no odd smell. 8/10 Steamed Bean Curd Roll $5.88 The menu said "Oyster Oil flavor," but I couldn't taste it, which was fine. The filling was a mix of minced pork, black fungus, and bamboo shoots, with a texture even better than the Steamed Beef Tripe. 9/10 Shrimp Dumpling w/Chives $6.38 I'm bored of pure shrimp dumplings (Har Gow), so my friend Danny ordered the one with chives. There was no noticeable chives flavor, but it still worked for me. As a Buddhist, chives are actually forbidden. The chives were mild, the shrimp fresh, with good taste but no highlights. 7/10 Char Siu Puff $6.38 I'm not a fan of either Char Siu Puff or Char Siu Bun, but this one was good. However, I wouldn't rate it more than 7/10. Beef & Cilantro Rice Noodle Roll $7.38 The texture was good, and the taste was great. The beef was tender and flavorful, but it felt a bit expensive for the portion. 8/10 Housemade Beef Ball $5.88 The menu mentioned "tangerine peel flavor" in the beef ball, but I couldn't detect it. Nonetheless, the beef ball itself was excellent--soft, spongy, and juicy. I'd give it a 9/10. Singapore Fried Rice Noodles $16.88 I'd give this dish a 9/10. The menu said "rice noodles," but they looked more like wheat noodles. This was my first time having Singapore Fried Noodles without beef or shrimp, making it more of a vegan dish, but it still tasted good. Not oily at all, and no burnt smell, which was a plus. However, the price was steep--$17 for vegan noodles? Steamed Chicken and Soy Sauce Chicken combined plate $21.88 x 2 This was a disappointment. The chicken was served beautifully with a candle burning underneath the plate, giving it a nice presentation. However, the Steamed Chicken was not cooked through. I understand that Chinese cuisine sometimes serves chicken with a slightly bloody bone, which I usually like, but this one was undercooked--especially the meat near the bone, which wasn't cooked at all. Aside from that, the chicken was tasteless. I eat very lightly seasoned food, but even I felt this lacked proper seasoning. Overall, this restaurant is very lightly seasoned, which seems like a misunderstanding of Cantonese cuisine. When you reduce the salt and sauce, you need to compensate by enhancing the flavors in other ways. It's a very good restaurant, and I would score it 88 out of 100. However, since Yelp only has 5-point options, I'd give it 4 stars. read more
This location is located on the first floor of a Holiday Inn. There are plenty of parking and can accommodate for big groups. The ambiance is very nice, not too loud, just families and small groups. The interior is clean and modern. The service was quick and courteous. The food was delicious. I recommend the siu mai and roasted duck. This was arguably one of the best siu mai I've had.
