This place is a hidden gem. My friends and I used to come to the restaurant that was here before it when we were teenagers so its like a trip down memory lane. Their banh bot chien "Extra Crispy" rice cake and egg dish is probably the best I have had here in Houston. It is traditionally a Chiu Chow dish and I can tell thats what they are and they have mastered it to perfection. All of the rice Com Tam plates are good and their "shaking beef" Com Chien Bo Luc Lac, could go up against anyone else's in town. Father-in-law almost religiously likes to visit Pho Minh Phat once a week, to have his Pho and beef fix since he can't really chew too much nowadays. As much as I love Ramen, or Chinese Noodle Soups, I find it hard to beat a good bowl of Pho, especially at this place that consistently uses quality meat, and broth that keeps improving. I ordered Pho Tai Be Nam Gau, which has Calf Eye of Round, Well-Done Flank, and Fatty Brisket tonight. When the bowl is set on the table, the aroma of herbs and beef welcomes me right away. The Calf Eye of Round is extra tender, and I like that thin layer of fat that forms on the side of the brisket. None of the broth was left when I finish my bowl. Pho Minh Phat is becoming my top favorite Pho in Houston, even compared to Pho Dien at Kim Son Plaza, both Pho Ve Dem, Pho A Hung by Night, and any Pho Binh. The husband and wife owners are some of the nicest people I meet, always so accommodating and hospitable, making sure customers enjoy their meal at their restaurant. It's really the ultimate Houston comfort food in my book. After finishing a great bowl of Pho, there is just this feeling of utter satisfaction and content that is indescribable. I really like the pho here, its clean and fast and with lots of options. Large facility with many seats. Unfortunately, I had to subtract a few stars because I don't think the beef in the pho tai they served me was fresh. I gave the raw meat a sniff (as i always do with pho) and I immediately had a knot in my throat. It wasn't spoiled, but it wasn't fresh. I immediately stuck the meat into the hot broth and cooked it till it was fully brown. At that point, it tasted like anything else so I didn't' mind it too much. The broth was fantastic and the portion was generous. Overall a pretty solid place to get lunch, I just hope they can take better observation to the meat. read more

My family often went to Cheno Fast Food (formerly known as Hao Hao Mi Gia), and our subsequent visits after the change in ownership left a lot to be desired in terms of food and service. Food there was a bit inconsistent, but the nostalgia and hope that the original taste would return kept me coming back. My family decided to try this place out. We weren't sure if the two places were related since pho seemed to be the main thing, but we were pleasantly surprised to see a familiar face from the good old days (the tall waiter). He's super nice and soft-spoken btw. We ate the wonton soup with a special side order of bot chien tom, hu tieu do bien, and a rice plate. I realize as I was waiting for an order here that I gave a negative review of this place as my first impression, but i came here with family (instead of to go) and received good service and food. Therefore, I decided to get to go again and an update review is necessary as you don't want to just speak on the bad and not the good. I love flat noodles and the one here is pretty decent. I used to go to Chino's as a kid, but I question their sanitary and cleanliness. This place is across the street and closest to me. My order today looked awesome! A lot of sauce, veggies, and protein. The noodles also looked great. Overall, better quality control than when my boyfriend ordered two orders and barely got much. Fantastic place for Bahn Bot Chien. Our order came out hot and crispy and not too oily. It was served with pickled melons that gave it the perfect crunch. Egg rolls were large and full of pork filling and were crispy. I love that mint was served with them. Malaysian chicken and shrimp noodles had that great wok seared flavor and and had a touch of spice. The only miss was the Szechuan rice as it was pretty bland, though fresh. I'm sad that the old Tan Tien is gone. I used to come here for lunch back in high school and we came back every once in awhile for family dinners. But I am glad that they replaced it with something that is pretty solid. This place's best dish is their banh bot chien. I feel they deep fried the bot first before adding the egg and frying it again. Their bo luc lac was solid, and the wontons were pretty flavorful. When we walked in the server seemed mad that we walked in and gave us an attitude and didn't even hand us menus. I had to go up to the counter and grab three menus. They did not seem very busy with probably 5-6 tables being occupied. When I raised my hand and asked for some bigger plates and dipping bowls he replied back in Vietnamese "WHAT DO YOU NEED?" Drove from Austin to Houston because I thought that this is the same Minh Ky Mi Gia in Orange County, CA....it's not. The staff was nice and the restaurant is very clean. In addition to noodles they also have rice dishes. We start off with "bot chien" which is fried dough with egg and it was delicious! For entree, we ordered broken rice with pork chop, fried egg noodle with seafood and the dry house special noodle. Broken rice with pork-chop come with egg omelette, fresh veggies an a side of soup, good but nothing too exciting. Fried egg noodle portion was very generous, again nothing stands out and it seem to taste like every other restaurant. House special dry noodle come with fried shrimp and assorted sliced meat with a bowl of soup on the side. Believe it or not the noodle it self is too dry.... I know, i know....it's dry noodle but dry noodle usually have a meat sauce so that you can toss the noodle. Came here to try the banh bot chien and it was fantastic. I've never had anything like it. It's a fried egg cake with fried squares of rice fried together into a crispy pancake. It's a pretty filling appetizer for only $6. For my main course, I got the grilled pork with rice. The pork was tender and very flavorful. The portion was so big that I ended up taking half home. As for the restaurant itself. It's pretty far out from the rest of Chinatown on the outskirts of Alief past Dairy Ashford. I had to knock a star off for the service. The restaurant was a must place to go on my trip to Houston since they have good reviews for Duck Noodle (Mi Vit Tiem) and I've been searching for good place to eat that noddle for years. It's over my expectation by size! We ordered small bowls and I packed half of it home while my husband tried to force himself to finish his. The taste was good and the pickle was definitely amazing. Soup is salty, especially when I eat the half leftover on the next day. The duck was not really marinated, a bit dried but I like that the smell of the duck was totally removed. It's a good try! We also ordered Stir-fried noodle (combination). It's flavorful, not too oily and all the ingredients mixed well. My husband also likes the dish because he can smell the smoke from the pan when eating the noodle....hm...he likes it! There're also many other dishes we wanna try but we're already full (I forgot to mention we also packed half of the stir-fried noodle home), so if you're not going to eat a lot, you should watch out when ordering foods unless you're willing to eat leftovers on the next days. Was looking for a new pho place to try in a area with hundreds of pho places. This place had great reviews so it was worth the try. We ordered a pho and a dry noodle dish and they both were great! The broth on the pho wasn't overly heavy and it hit the spot. They give just the right amount of fillings with it, most places get stingy with their meats but this place fill the bowl up. The dry noodle bowl was a mix of two different noodles and seafood. The seasoning was also just right and the portion was big. I initially ordered the bo luc lac, but the owner did a custom order for a com xa xiu plate. Eventually ended up ordering the bo luc lac because the reviews on yelp. Banh bot chien (egg cake) was really good! We ate the whole thing. Hieu tieu kho (dried noodles) not so much. I had a little bit and didn't eat the rest. The mi xao don thap cam (crispy egg noodles special) was very good except for the pork or beef. It seemed dry and old but the sauce and other meats and veggies were very good. This is the new location that's in the same shopping center as King Solomon. Their food is fantastic. I think this is the same owner as the people who used to have hao hao across the street. The pho here is delicious. When drinking the broth, I was able to taste a legit beef broth flavor. I got a food coma from this place. Their small bowl of pho was enough to fill me up. Unlike most pho places, they put in a lot of noodles for us. I also tried the banh bot chien. The banh could've been crunchier but other than that, the food is great. Due to my fathers declining health he has been very weak and today during our visit to this restaurant my father fell while he was trying to move from the table to his walker.
