I love the handsome biscuit! I always just get a biscuit and gravy and tator tots with their sauce. I can't remember the name of it.. but it's SOOOOOOO GOOOOOOOOD. Comeback Sauce! That's what it's called. I usually don't even like tator tots but their tstor tots and that sauce... Oh my gosh. The friggin best. I've also had on of their breakfast sandwiches I think the Fitzgerald? Something like that... It was very good. I wish they did half stars in Yelp. **3.5 stars** One of the highest biscuit spots where we were staying at, we definitely had to try it out. Since we're from the south biscuits are something that has to be really well. I can't eat too much of it (carbs), but I do know what is a good biscuit. It's flaky, not super dry, and just sort of melts in your mouth with buttery taste. It's amazing with other sauces or an amazing gravy. Anyways the rating took us by surprise of how many people love this place. So we came here and I got the Chicken Classic, but added bacon (of course) and they happily added it to the biscuit. The chicken itself wasn't really flavorful and I thought that Handsome relies more on the sauces to give that flavor to the chicken. But enough about the chicken, right? I mean, that is still a very important component, but it's about the biscuit. The few bites that I got to eat, it wasn't bad! It reminded me of biscuits from Church's Chicken, a slab of honey that's glazed on it, but to be honest it's not really a true biscuit. I think it still came off as a little too dry to be honest and didn't have that consistency of just melting in your mouth. It wasn't bad though for sure and I can definitely see why this place is loved by many. But, for me it didn't cut it for me. I think the dish itself came out to be a little dry overall. Maybe I'm just a sucker for gravy. Other than that, limited seating inside, but they have picnic tables outside. If you're looking for a place to park, park across the street if there's no more spots in the parking lot in front of the store. I believe they do all their cooking as far as prep work and biscuits in the building across the street and then move everything to the smaller building for serving. If you're looking for a good biscuit spot, and probably a place where you are coming back and back, this place would be a solid spot. The biscuit was buttery and flaky with soft, fluffy insides. The chicken thigh was so juicy and tender; the batter was masterfully seasoned and fried to perfection. The bacon was crispy but slightly chewy on the inside and the sausage gravy was heavenly. This was SO. GOOD. It actually made me laugh out loud because I had no words. I felt so blessed while eating this. * HASH BROWNS [$3.50] Being the potato head that I am, I devoured these and didn't want to share. These were so tasty! Reminded me of latkes (potato pancakes). A very trendy spot with the best fried chicken I've had in town. The line might get a little long, but the wait is worth it. My favorite is the Bleu Blazer - a fried chicken biscuit sandwich with spicy pickled red cabbage and a thick layer of creamy blue cheese dressing. The spicy cabbage is not spicy, so if you don't like spicy then don't worry about it, and if you do like spicy their hot sauce goes really well on it. I recommend adding a layer of bacon to the sandwich - they cook it really well. The Stevie is also really good, as their fried chicken is amazing; however, the combination of honey, pickles, and their sweet potato biscuit is altogether a little too sweet. As for their sides, I recommend getting their pickled vegetables. They are delicious. The house potato salad is also really tasty, but be warned that it's not actually a potato salad - the name is misleading - it should really be called an arugula salad. It has a few pieces of potato, but not nearly enough to be a potato salad. Avoid the hash browns - they are not worth it as they are not crunchy enough. A lot of people like to get their house sodas, which is soda water with syrup added to it. I'm not a fan, but those who order it tend to like it. I get a sweet tea. I love Handsome Biscuit. They currently have outdoor seating available for up to 16 people, but the tables are long wood tables so people would have to sit at a table with others. Only one person or group of people could be in at a time. The cashier is right at the door. This is nice because you don't have to worry about people being behind you inside. The biscuits are average size biscuits which I'm a little indifferent about because the chicken was too big for the bread. But it was still delicious. I've always wanted to try this place because foodie pages on instagram, google map and yelp are always saying that they are one of the best restaurants in Norfolk area, well they didn't lie! Other that the fact that their ac is not working while it was one of the hottest days during this summer and they close too early(2pm), everything went very well. We also ordered a regular hash brown with a garlic got sauce. Both the biscuits are unique(made with sweet potato). It's not actually sweet like dessert but you can taste the sweet potato and the texture taste like wheat bread. I prefer crunchy when it comes to bread so I'd want it to be toast longer but it's not bad. The Hella Fitzgerald is totally worth the name of best seller. The fried chicken is not greasy yet crunchy in the outside and tender in the inside. I think this is the best texture of fried food and this fried chicken totally surprised me. The gravy on top is very mushroom-ish, and it's a good paur with this fried chicken. The A.C Slawter is another surprise. I usually won't prder pulled-pork because many barbecue sauce are very sweet and I don't really like sweet generally. Since the guy recommended us this biscuit Imma give it a try and it didn't disappoint me. The sause is perfectly balanced, both sweet and sour are in this sauce. I first experienced Handsome Biscuit when it was a fairly new concept and I left neither disappointed nor impressed. I had the "Hella Fitzgerald" sweet potato biscuit sandwich with bacon, cheddar, and sausage gravy. It sounded so good on paper, but when it was executed in front of me I was just left wanting more; furthermore, my initial experience was what kept me from coming back for about 4 years. Throughout those 4 years I heard nothing but how everyone was loving what HB was serving, and how they were always improving upon their recipes. I finally gave in and decided to give it another try, and I'm glad I did. I once again got the Hella Fitzgerald, but this time I got their famous hash browns and a side of Lupo Hotsauce. This time around the food tasted so much better. They really perfected the recipe of their signature breakfast sandwich, and the Lupo (which was not previously available) added an element of spice that took the whole thing to a new level. Their hashbrowns were a nice complement to the sandwich too. Overall, it turns out all the Handsome Biscuit needed to be great was some time. The dining area is pretty small if you're looking to dine indoors but it really has that "hole in the wall" feel at this location. Their lupo sauce is what makes everything taste extra better. Not too spicy just the right kick of heat. If I could bathe in it I would but probably not a good idea lol PARKING::: Besides the obvious small space they have attached, there is also plenty parking right across the street for free. No more having to drive around the block hoping someone pulls out. SITTING::: This location is particularly small so you'll find only 3-4 tables to sit at inside but you might not enjoy much of your food beside the people in line. They do make up for the outside patio which where we usually eat...sometimes with birds. I'm almost 98% sure it isn't, but to me it is. I found this place on Yelp and knew it had to be on my hitlist for my visit. I came in for an early lunch, between coffee shops and chowed down. I went with Fitzgerald - fried chicken, bacon, gravy - WOWZA. It's a monster of a biscuit/sandwich and kept me full will into dinner. Well, ok. My husband got the Nashville, which is comes with the fried chicken smothered in a delicious Nashville hot sauce, served with sliced pickles and had just the perfect amount of kick. I got the sloppy, delicious, incredible Hella Fitzgerald, which came smothered in bacon, cheese, and heart-stoppingly delicious gravy. I could only finish about half of it, but that was okay because my daughter eagerly helped me gobble up the rest. Toddler approved! They use chicken thighs for their chicken so the meat was incredibly moist, but the coating crispy and beautifully seasoned. We ordered the shorty combo, chicken classic combo and Stevie combo. I didn't get pictures of everything. The food was mediocre. All the sandwich's were falling apart and soggy. It wasn't what I was expecting when spending this amount of money for biscuits. The biscuits didn't have any flavor. Probably wouldn't return after spending $85 and everyone from my family threw away their food. It's places like Handsome Biscuit, that were so original and so unlike anything else in the area when they opened in Norfolk, that make me miss the city. While we were living in Norfolk several years ago, there was an obvious burgeoning effect happening: new restaurants were opening, the Neon District was getting started, murals were going up, more art/artists in general were starting to find a place. The Handsome Biscuit to me was a symbol of the beginning of all of this. Before Toast, before Neon, before Norfolk started getting "cool" again, the founders of Handsome Biscuit took a leap with something they knew could be great and opened up a sunny, biscuit-slinging shop at the edge of Park Place. People loved it. And I truly think the momentum they gained in that business was a big incentive for other business owners to grasp the opportunity and move in as well. Anyways, kudos to Handsome Biscuit. You make me miss Norfolk. The biscuits are out of this world. I really wanted to like Handsome Biscuit. A "foodie" friend of mine highly recommended the "Hella Fitzgerald" biscuit sandwich. I took one bite and turned it back in and asked for a refund. It was undercooked and I did not want to endure food poisoning. For everyone's sake, I hope they have raised their standards. I have never submitted a negative review of any restaurant, but this was exceptionally bad. Let the buyer beware. read more
