    Menu- Siren Subs
    Kelly F.

I think the reimagining of the Virginia Cheese Shop to Siren Subs is a success! I was so excited to see the sandwich shop open in West Freemason and couldn't wait to try their sandwiches. As you walk in, the mermaid branding welcomes folks to a new but familiar space. The menu is varied and seems to have something for everyone: more traditional subs, fancier sub sandwiches or focaccia sandwiches, grilled cheeses, sub bowls, vegetarian options, and tons of add-ons. We ordered and received our sandwiches pretty quickly! We tried two of their subs, the Sandbar and the Amore (Zack's way!). Both were on tasty bread, were well constructed and deli-wrapped, and all the meats, cheeses, and veggies were fresh and delicious. The subs were super balanced as well, and it didn't feel like any one item in the sandwich took over. They were super solid subs. I can't wait to come back throughout the summer and work through the menu! I'll always welcome another stellar sandwich shop to the neighborhood, and Siren Subs is no exception!

    Italian sub Zack's way

Think of your favorite sub place in the area. Jimmy johns? Subway? Firehouse? Jersey mikes? And allow siren subs to challenge everything you thought was good about them! I really do wish the Yelp for Siren's Subs was set up on opening day because the amount of excitement I felt after tasting the Italian sub! I wanted everyone to know! It was SO juicy, garlicky, twangy on top of a delicious bread that I cant confirm is made in-house but trust me the bread is a treat on its own. Make sure to get it Zack's way if you happen to try it - that add's a spicy pickle relish. The owner and crafter-of-subs you will see briefly when she brings you your food! This is a small, if you know you know type of sandwich shop perfect for locals or those looking for a new treat on their lunch break. Theres bar seating and a few tables inside and outside.

Today I was out and about running errands, doing some shopping, and I figured I'd try another sandwich spot I had on my list. It wasn't too far, and parking was easy to get. It's in a lovely neighborhood, right near the docks, you can grab your sandwich, take a little stroll, and eat it while watching the water if you wanted. I had one more quick stop, so I just waited to eat it at home. I had gotten the Cypriot Halloumi with lemon whipped feta, roasted garlic aioli, and additional provolone. I also requested it be toasted. Now, am I sure I should've done that, no. It was messy because of the toasting. But, it was a really great sandwich besides that. It took a little under 10 minutes of waiting, and while it wasn't busy at first, more people started trickling in as it seemed about time for lunch. I loved how cute it is inside, and the convenience of the electronic ordering pad. I could customize as much as I wanted, see all the options I had, and not have to worry about being slow or picky. When you finally decide on what you want, they do give you warnings as to allergens and everything on the pad as well, which is very important in this day and age. Overall, a good spot, especially if you're on a date or want some peace for a little. I'll definitely have to come back and try some more of their menu!

Despite undergoing some renovations, place is well kept. You order at the kiosk when you walk in and everything is pretty straightforward. The worker who prepared my order was friendly when she came out to give me my food. Got the Amore (Zack's way). Phenomenal sandwich. I wish the roasted garlic aioli were a tad bit stronger, but otherwise no complaints. This paired well with the orange soda and to top it off, they offered a delicious chocolate chip coconut cookie that day.

Finally checking out the new sandwich shop after they were a cheese shop.

I've been living downtown the past few years and I used to come to this shop when it was the Virginia Cheese Shop. Ohh yay! The sandwiches haven't changed one bit. I love the rebranding name Sirens Subs. Anything mermaid I'm all for because Norfolk's mascot is obviously a mermaid. This cute little sandwich shop is a go to of mine because it's honestly the closest shop to my house. I'm thankful to have this shop in the area. If you know me then you know that I will try anything twice. I've only had great sandwiches here. The local sub names are a cool touch to the menu. My goal is to try as many sandwiches on the menu as I can. As of right now, my top two subs are the Norfolk Club without ham and the Lemon-Whipped Feta on rotation. I hope they bring back some grilled cheese seasonal sandwiches in the fall and near the holidays like they had at the Virginia Cheese Shop days. I really would go more often if they were open after my work hours. The service is fast with a simple order kiosk at the front for in dining and to go orders. A must go to on days off though or I would spend all my money here. The hours for Sirens Subs are Tuesday-Saturday 11am-3pm. Go check out these subs and show them some love by giving them a review.

Italian sub, it is twice this size typical 8" . I ate half

Cool place, nice clean welcoming hoop atmosphere, it's kinda different as I walked in there was no one around, you order from a kiosk and they call out when ready. Had the Italian, very good. Only bummer is small sub was $15 but that's the price of supporting a local small biz these days I guess.

Lovely people watching, yet it's not so loud that table conversation of challenging. You'll notice that this is quick-ish dining. It's not fast-casual, but you're not waiting 30 minutes for your food. Expect at least 10 minutes for appetizers to arrive. Our entrees were ready in about 20, and the place was near capacity. The great thing about the wait? It was well worth it. Piping hot food, served with that homemade flavor arrives on dishes that almost match. I chuckled at the mismatched bowls that hit our table. I felt like family before my first bite. Meatloaf! I can't make one, but I'll eat one that is well made. Dense, flavorful and portioned to take some with you. My bonus was that I got my wife's leftovers, too. It was delicious! It was even better when I warmed it for lunch the next day. Traditional sides, worthy of their own review, but I'll keep it brief. Get the mashed potatoes! Send a thanks when you're full.

Updated Review:…read more R.A.S is located inside of the handsome biscuit. There isn't really any seating inside so you have to order to go or sit down outside. The sandwich is just as the store name suggests basic, if you like a classic simple sandwich then this is your spot. I would have like to have seen a slightly higher quality meat for a sandwich shop. The meat on the sandwiches seems like regular prepackaged deli meat, given the price point there's nothing wrong with that. Most if not all of the sandwiches start at 8$ so everything is decently priced. If you want a sandwich but you don't want a jimmy John's or subway sub this is a nice alternative for a little midday lunch. Original Review: The yelp page says permanently closed however it is not, the sandwich just moved locations. It is now located inside of the handsome biscuit restaurant. I was excited to try this restaurant. I have attempted to try it a few times however they're "closed" each time despite the neon open sign being lit. The business should clarify if they are only open until they sell out or they may need to adjust the hours of operation that they have posted across various platforms as it causes confusion.
