My favorite burger place in town. I love that they offer free bubbly water to drink. They Englewood burgers lettuce wrap are fantastic if you're gluten-free. I also recommend the works fries. I've heard they they have a dedicated fryer for just french fries making them gluten-free, but I have not confirmed this. The seating isn't very comfortable. Personally I feel that way. Most every seat is bench style, but the ambience is lovely and the food incredible oh, and they have nugget ice, which is awesome. read more

Me and my children went here for a late lunch early dinner for Mother's Day last week. I have been there a few times but actually it was much better. Service was better and the food was excellent. I think my last visit I just didn't order the right thing that just didn't agree with me. But the more I talk to people around town everybody seems to like handline and I had a good experience myself. I definitely will come back. My children like that. Food: fries were a bit greasy and not as good as touted in The Press Democrat recently. We split a Inglewood Burger sans sweet relish and thousand island. And we split a trout burger (the salmon burger was not available). Both were good. We split a Chenin Blanc (on HH tap), raw oysters. And finished with soft serve. Order from the food window, bar, oyster bar, or softserve window, depending. That's a bit involved. We sat outside at one of only two tables that had chairs with backs. Ambiance: But the outside garden dining in shade on 80-degree day was great, until the wind kicked up at 4:10 pm. Service: We also had to get our own water. I think they should streamline the ordering via a waiter. Price/Value: But it was already pricy. (We dropped $100 there.) And that would up the cost more. I don't think it was worth the price. Been here. Again. And again. And again... It has always underwhelmed. There is a lot of local hype, and a lot of Sebastopol-love for this place. Local folks love the Happy Hour... TLDR: I have never been impressed. After multiple visits, and trying a lot of items on the menu - I have NEVER really enjoyed it. I appreciate they make their own tortillas fresh - made to order. That is amazing! I don't want to take anything away from the kitchen. I think they work hard, and I think they are what make this place survive. For me - it is the chef and the management that make this place stumble. The service is friendly, but the ordering process is overly complex for a "window service" location. This is not a "restaurant" - this is more like drive-in. The complex menu makes the ordering process laborious and slow. Multiple runners from bar and kitchen should streamline things, but somehow in an mostly-empty setting - the service seemed slow. Most recently, we had tacos fish and al pastor - and both arrived cold, and/or buried under a MOUND of shredded cabbage. Lacking options in sauces, and those provided didn't seem appropriate for the menu items. They don't go together well, and there isn't really a bridge to tie them together. Things seemed to come out of the kitchen out of order too - several duplicate items arriving 5 minutes after others who ordered the same thing (on the same ticket) were served. Service is an issue here. We had nice fresh local oysters - but they were served dry (no brine) and with a mignonette that was overwhelmingly sour and overwhelming (I will allow for this to be a matter of personal taste). Oysters were mostly nicely shucked. The Ceviche was bland, but fresh tasting. The fresh made chips from the fresh in house tortillas were amazing - perhaps the most outstanding thing on the menu! Fish and chips were ok- definitely on greasy side - and no acid on the table to counteract. They did come with a ton of (tasty) crispy fries - but the house made ketchup was odd tasting and acidic - and clashed with the dill-heavy aioli that was served with the fish. Sometimes doing the basics right is better than being overly creative. I ordered this as "failsafe" but it was still not my jam. Over and over - it may come down to a matter of taste, but I just don't like gel with this place - I never have. I keep trying, and keep being disappointed. Clever doesn't make up for cohesion - and I just feel like the dishes and flavors don't flow, or go together, and the service always leaves me feeling underwhelmed. read more

Fish tacos - overwhelmed with cabbage with very little protein Ceviche - needs more visual appeal. Tasted ok but plain Burger - good. Nicely browned and buttered bun. Not particularly memorable but solid. Tomato salad - today's daily special was good and fresh. It was a standout Fries - for $9, these were standard fries and way overpriced Ice cream - Strauss creamery - a standout option. Get the cup for more ice cream than you'd get on a cone. Dont get me wrong the food is good here lol.... Last time I came here I got tacos to go and there was a long hair in one of them. Happens sometimes but my bf was grossed out to eat tacos for a while after that. Today I convinced him to go with me for tacos again... I am just a lil annoyed because for 2 taco orders and 2 drinks it came out to 55$.... Like yes these tacos are pretty fire but the pricing is so steep. They do not come with salsa, I asked the guy at the register who may or may not be an actual droid about getting a side of salsa.... He said its 50 cents but then somehow it actually cost 1.65$ for this little cup of green salsa. The Handline was such a fantastic find! The fish tacos were absolutely delicious--crispy, fresh, and served on homemade tortillas (yes, homemade! I'm in!). The Al Pastor tacos were just as tasty--perfectly seasoned and satisfying. I also had the watermelon agua fresca, which was super refreshing and the perfect complement to the meal. First of all, it used to be a Fosters Freeze which they demolished but kept the concrete to make retaining walls for their amazing outdoor patio which has tons of seating. We were lucky to come durning happy hour! And while we didn't get any drinks, the food was pretty good. I got the fish taco and tostadito from the HH menu and my husband tried the burger. We also shared some oysters from the HH menu as well. Everything tasted good, but not super great. What did make it great though was(what looked like) house made sauce on the table. I tried it and it instantly made the meal better :) We sat outside in the garden patio and didn't realize it had multiple levels. We visited the restaurant during lunch hour and it wasn't crowded at all, most people sat on the patio but inside was also very nice and spacious. Food here was so good. My husband enjoyed his Los Cabos Tacos with al pastor. I had a small kid's burger which was the perfect size for me, and it was delicious, especially with fries. The fries were so crispy! Friends and family know how much I love a good french fry and this place has always been recommended to me as having just that. Our group of five decided to meet here for a holiday lunch. I was excited to finally try their food and of course, their fries. We arrived before noon and it wasn't crowded yet (though the place filled up within 20 minutes). You order at the counter and they give you a number. We had our choice of tables and we elected to sit indoors since it was still chilly outside. Inside is welcoming and clean. We ordered: Tostadas Fish tacos x 4 Green salad x 2 French fries Food was delivered to our table and our kind server was happy to take a few photos of our group. The beer battered rockfish tacos were piled high with shaved cabbage. It came with chipotle aioli and avocado. We all loved our tacos and I was happy to share my fries with everyone. They came with ketchup and a delicious chipotle aioli dip. The fries are indeed outstanding. Light and crispy and cooked to absolute perfection. My friend and I keep saying we must go back for those fries! The green salads also came mounded with fresh greens and lots of pepitas. The outdoor covered patio area is quite nice and large. There were a couple people eating outside but I could tell it would be really nice to dine outside when the temps are a little higher. Perfect place to enjoy with your pooch. We all enjoyed our dining experience and next time, we will save room for "Ode to Foster's" with an ice cream. They have their own parking lot but it fills up quickly. Street parking available. The ambiance of the restaurant was casual but slightly upscale, with maybe ten tables inside and lots more seating outside, along with a ping pong table. There is a little bar top inside as well. We ordered the El Coronado fish tacos and they were some of the best I've ever had. House made tortillas, big crunchy pieces of beer battered fish, avocado, chipotle aioli, and lots of cabbage. (Delicious) The fries were enough for 2-3 people. The service is good. We sat outside on the patio. They have a lower sitting area great for families with children. It is pet friendly too. Arriving on a Friday night during the last part of their happy hour was a bit chaotic. Very limited parking for the size of the restaurant and pretty much no remaining sitting, but having drove around for awhile to find parking I wasn't willing to leave without eating. While in line waiting to order (window counter ordering) a table came open. I quickly walked to get the table and text my order to my daughter who remained in line. Not a relaxing dinner experience. With that said there is an outside patio with room for kids to run around and play , so good place to bring the kiddos. I had the fish tacos - beer battered white fish with fresh cabbage slaw,chipotle aioli and made to order tortillas. Also ordered was the fisherman stew and fries. All the food seemed really fresh and done well. Of course I had to have a swirl soft serve for dessert. A nod to it being a former foster freeze location. I was able to guilt a group of 3 into letting us grab a six top when it opened (as we were a group of 6 and had been waiting for a table to open up for a long time). The oysters were really good. When I say perfectly, I mean they've cracked the code at Handline. These tiny little bites sized morsels were unbelievably crispy on the outside but still tender and juicy on the inside. Just heavenly. All that wrapped up in a delicious house made tortilla and topped with green salsa and pickles red onions. Recommend you hit these with a little of their house made orange hot sauce to complete the experience. They have a good beer and wine selection which seemed well curated for their menu. The menu itself is small, which I like. It allows them to focus on the dishes they do well. Sebastopol is kind of a foodie destination these days, so it'll be hard not to return here when there's so many more restaurants I want to try, but Handline's appeal is clear. Also the ceviche, two (large) fish tacos, the tuna burger, and two glasses of wine. For $102.00 dollars. Goodness. While I understand the area is a popular tourist destination and yes the food was good. Plus the young man taking our order was very friendly, and food came out quickly.... that is still very high for sitting at picnic table style seating, an interior that is similiar to Chipotle with the corrugated metal, and no real incentive to go stand in line and order another glass of wine... which would have likely been the case if offered table side. Not bad, but it is from friggen Lodi. Food was good and salsa was excellent. Self serve water without refills unless you get off your ass and serve yourself.
