My family has been coming to El Tarasco for a long time. There are several Mexican restaurants in Sebastopol, and we've been to all of them. This is my daughter's favorite, and in her top three favorite places to eat anywhere. We come to El Tarasco almost weekly, as tradition, on Sundays after my daughter's horseback riding. The family who owns the restaurant knows us well and knows all our regular orders. There are a few things that El Tarasco does really well. Their housemade salsa's, their chips, and their carnitas. It is my favorite carnitas taco around! I also really like the Diego Special. I feel like some of their dishes have changed over the years, but they have stayed consistent for the last 20 or so years I've been coming here. The ambiance is simple, but it's comfortable. They have a tv and sports playing most of the time. They are a great, small business and I will continue to support them for years to come! read more

As soon as the I saw the man coming out with my flat looking super burrito, I was bummed. For 16 bucks, a burrito should not look like this. It was small and flat, need I say more? On the positive side, the man who took my order was friendly and the ingredients were fresh. But overall I cant recommend this place (at least for the burritos). We have been long-time El Tarasco customers since Elias opened many years ago (20?). We order take-out every Sunday evenings as well as other eat-in times. After all these years, in the the past weeks we are sorely disappointed. Two weeks ago, our usual Sunday take-out shredded chicken tostados were replaced with chopped beef. After pick-up and drive home to discover this, we didn't go back to complain. Tonight on our Sunday take-out order, the usual order of shredded chicken tostado came without a shred of any chicken. We will likely be looking for a new Sunday take-out venue if this is how El Tarasco currently operates. read more

Rice is good, beans are good, chips are good, meat is good, avocado is great. The one thing is that the meal is missing that flare, something to make it stand out. I would suggest to anyone planning to go there is to save your salsa and throw it into the mix. The chips are good but the salsa is more like hot sauce so doesn't really set the tone for chips and salsa. Unless you are into hot of course. read more

A few months ago, we accidentally called in an order here instead of our regular place. It was good (albeit more expensive). The chips were homemade and better than our normal restaurant. The green salsa was not great but the burrito was yummy but different. Tonight, our restaurant was closing so we ordered here again. The super burritos were bland and missing ingredients-just bland beans with a little bland meat. (I always ask for no rice). Where is the avocado, the sour cream or cheese? The onions in the Al pastor? (Dare I ask the spices or even salt?) To top it off the salsa that was just ok last time was quite bland and the magnificent chips were thick grocery store chips. I tossed the half of my burrito that I was going to eat for lunch tomorrow, most of what I planned to eat tonight and all of the crappy chips. This place is GREAT!!! I was coming from out of town to host a memorial and needed to feed a large number of people. I called several places in Sebastopol and Elias from El Tarasco was the only person to even call me back to get a quote. We worked together on a menu, 2 types on enchiladas, asada tacos, beans and rice, and we easily set up the plan. When the day arrived, all of the food (and it was A LOT of food), was ready on time and everything was perfect. But most importantly, the food was frickin' DELICIOUS! I love enchiladas but rarely find a mole that I like, but I could not get enough of this deliciousness. I had so many compliments on it, and so many of our local family members asked where I got the food, that I'm sure they'll get some new customers out of this. It seems that something goes wrong more often than not at this restaurant. I've done takeout and either an item is left out of the order, or I get something I didn't want or as in the last time was charged $5 for pico that wasn't in the bag. If you have them repeat the order to you, it doesn't mean it's in the bag- you need to physically pull everything out and make sure before leaving . Other than that, the food is pretty good. Not the best. But good for Sebastopol?? They don't use Oaxaca cheese in their quesadillas. And their quesadillas are literally protein and cheese and way too much of it. Especially when it's not the right cheese. I have yet to see a dish like the ones the owner posted on their yelp page. The first time I tried chicken tacos. It was not good. Over cooked flavorless chicken, no seasoning just boiled on a corn tortilla that maybe had 10 seconds on each side so it didn't even taste like corn it just fell apart in your mouth like thick cardboard paper. And the chicken had this super watery sauce on top that just broke my tortillas from the sogginess. I've tried twice, the service is a little spotty and I don't understand the set up inside. It's just kind of run down like an authentic taqueria but absolutely no love in the food. The salsa is super chunky, watery and flavorless. I'm just slightly confused like maybe they don't try at all cause most of their clientele isn't Hispanic, So they just make it super bland? Overall, 2 mediocre experiences. After having been to El Tarasco several times, I can say with near certainty that it is my favorite Mexican restaurant in town. Compared to Martha's or El Coronel, El Tarasco is unassuming and just appears to be a good, honest and down-to-earth Mexican restaurant. It is more of a casual spot where you take your friends and family for something quick and easy (also good for families that aren't looking for a more upscale place). The staff are always friendly and the service is fast. I've never had to wait more than 10 minutes for my food. While you wait, they start you off with some chips and salsa. The chips are warm, golden-brown and lightly salted. It pairs dry well with both the red and green salsas, though the green salsa is my favorite. The green salsa isn't terribly spicy and has a nice tangy flavor to it that whets your appetite. The burritos are consistently good and comes loaded every time with beans, rice, onions, tomatoes and cilantro. The carnitas are delicious and some of the best I've had in town. It is moist, juicy and rich with pork flavor while having a tender texture in the middle and well-browned, crispy edges. Start with the carnitas if you don't know what you want because you won't be disappointed. My favorite combination is a regular burrito with carnitas and wash it down with a grapefruit Jarritos. read more

This is my favorite spot for good, casual, authentic Mexican food. I love their carnitas tacos or Erikas salad on hot days, chicken soup or chile verde on cold nights. It's so nice to be able to stop by after work, get some good food I don't have to cook, and smiles from the staff. I had a party last week and ordered enchiladas and tacos, guacamole and chips a day ahead. Elias had them ready at just the right time so they were hot and fresh for my guests.
