Very much enjoyed my visit to Sarmentine in Sebastapol. I am a sucker for great pastries, and this place lives up to the hype. Sarmentine is located in The Barlow in a premium corner location. Easy and free parking nearby. They offer phenomenal pastries and coffee beverages. I tried some of the day-old pastries as well as a selection of fresh stuff such as the pain suisse, canele, and some others. Everything was amazing- even the day-olds. I also thought the pricing here was reasonable for great pastries. I have paid much more than what I paid at Sarmentine for less scrumptious pastries. The staff who helped me out were kind, and they offered some great recommendations as to what I should order. The inside/outside dining space is a great touch, and they have a great kids' area right outside as part of The Barlow. Worth the visit! read more

The pastries at Sarmentine were delicious, and everything we tried was fresh and flavorful. Unfortunately, the service and drink quality were disappointing. I ordered an almond milk latte but was initially given regular milk. They remade it, though they seemed annoyed about the mistake. After spending over $40 and getting back to my car, I realized the remake was just steamed almond milk with no espresso at all. For a bakery with such a strong reputation and premium prices, I'd expect a little more attention to detail and a better customer experience. read more

The pastries are always absolutely delicious, and I love that they keep a nice, fresh rotation of items so there's always something new to try alongside the classics. But what really elevates this spot is the Barlow location itself. It is the perfect, stress-free place to relax if you have young children. The open play area with the big blue blocks is a total lifesaver--it's a safe, contained space where the kids can run around and burn off some energy while you actually get to sit back, relax, and enjoy a fantastic pastry and a hot coffee in peace. This was on my list of places to visit while I was visiting Sebastopol. It's a medium size with a couple of display counters. There's a few tables inside. But a huge patio outside. The inside has Hugh roll up doors with screens to keep the bugs out. By the time we arrived we could see that some items had sold out. Still there was a big selection of both sweet and savory items left. We picked up about a dozen different items. I ate the chocolate eclair, I didn't think that it would last long because of the heat. We also tried the kouign amann,and a raspberry Danish. All tasted fresh. In my eclair, the chocolate filling was thick and sweet chocolate tasting. This place definitely made the long drive worth the visit. read more

This is a cute bakery with a good selection of pastries to choose from. A huge plus if you have little ones is the kids' play area located right outside, making it a family-friendly spot to hang out. Stopped by this location in The Barlow after an early morning flight into STS. Found parking right nearby. They were playing music loudly on the exterior, which was a little odd. But once inside, the array of baked goods and the French inspired decor quickly provided a lovely distraction. There were only two staff members working, which left them spread a little thin. However, they kept composure and professionalism. Our pastries and coffees came out quick enough anyway. Everything tasted good, and there was much more in the pastry case that looked good as well. Looks like they have two other locations in the North Bay, and the founder is originally from France. Big congrats to their success. read more

The pastries here are absolutely worth the money. I forget the name but I got the pastry with chocolate chip and it was excellent! It basically melts in your mouth, since it's so soft! I normally don't like chocolate in my pastries but this one was delicious definitely not overpowering like some other pastries. The spot is cute and has a few tables inside as well as outside. The workers 0are so nice as well! I will say I was not a huge fan of the coffee but otherwise would come here to eat more pastries! read more

this place is great for family and friends. lots of seating and it's nice and spacious in the mornings. got lots of pastry and drink options. the service was good, got our food immediately and our drinks 5-10 minutes after ordering. the drinks were okay, not a great flavor for the iced mochas and the coffee taste was just okay. the pastries were much better. never had a canele before but it was pretty hard and couldn't taste much flavor. i enjoyed the almond chocolate croissant. so yummy and would love even more chocolate. the le normand baguette sandwich was so good and the fig jam was the best part. would definitely come back for the pastries read more

Sarmentine is located in the Barlow. It's a small spot with a few tables inside and a few outside. The bakery is cute and clean and offers not only sweets, but sandwiches and salads. There are lots of decadent looking items in the cases. I opted to try the vanilla eclair which was delicious. My only complaint-the prices are a bit high in my opinion. My small eclair cost over $8. I've visited the other locations in Petaluma & Santa Rosa yielding pleasant experiences. Unfortunately, that was not the case at the Sebastopol location today. The number one reason for this review is due to the staff. I looked at several other reviews and noticed negative comments about the employees- having the same impression I did. The staff never looked us in the eye, had an attitude devoid of a personality and did not seem very happy to be working there. I smiled yet one was not returned. All three of us had croissants- my friends had many crisp layers (although a bit dry). My croissant was not very crispy which I found disappointing. The matcha latte I had was good. I was blown away by some of the prices- a whole quiche offered at $62! The quiche looked tasty, yet I cannot understand the cost. There were several tables inside which was appreciated as it was quite chilly outside. There were some very delectable looking treats in the glass case that if I returned, I will try one of them. read more

We stopped by here for pastries after our brunch at Fern Bar! When we came in it was pretty late so we only had a few options left (mostly tarts). I chose the pistachio tart which was not only beautifully made but also tasted good! It's not too sweet and the pistachio cream is not too overpowering. The service was good! Staff is very friendly, the ambiance is ok but it gets too hot inside and for me, it will be better if there are some cozy seats or tables to accommodate people who wants to sit down from their walk at Barlow! Cute bakery in the Barlow. It has a nice indoor and outdoor seating option and the servers are nice to questions on menu. We tried the almond chocolate croissant and veggies croissant. I had an iced matcha latte here. The matcha was very bland and milky and not worth 6 dollars. The actual atmosphere was pretty good though. And the service was kinda quick. I can't speak for the pastries but the matcha wasn't great. read more

I love to bake, and this place was a baker's inspiration! The sourdough loaves were crunchy, the Crocquet Monsieur creamy on the inside and buttery crunch on the outside, delectable! Their Chai was subtly sweet and spicy, so comforting good. And the Chocolate croissant , to die for. Wait staff were friendly and efficient, even when I was touring their bakery cases and taking my sweet time to decide. They couldn't have been nicer, considering. They gave us 3 vs 2 coffees which they refunded us and gave the 3rd one for free. This place has amazing products and wonderful customer service. However the way they had to deal with the abhorrent behavior of others is appalling. A customer in line made a mistake in their online order and instead of listening to the employees guidance to address the issue with the manager was expecting the employee to just hand the rude customer free product to make them feel better and kept badgering the young woman needlessly. Marina did an amazing job dealing with it but it was atrocious to see. I hope she is recognized and that customer is no longer welcomed as their behavior was appalling. Really disappointing experience. They seem to be very accommodating when keeping their gluten-free options away from others, but when it comes to cross contamination related to tree nuts, not so accommodating. The employees admitted that they were trained in food safety related to allergens, but the bakery as a whole was unwilling to employ those skills in a way that would allow anyone with a tree nut allergy to eat anything made in their kitchen. Thank you for your reply. Literally, your employee told me there was nothing for me to purchase in the shop. I understand cross-contamination well and was not looking for guarantees - nothing in life is guaranteed. I was looking for effort (telling me ingredients and using clean tongs) and your employee indicated that it was too much trouble. Now this is a French Bakery! We live 30 minutes away and only discovered these fine folks a few weeks ago. It's now a weekly ritual. Best almond croissant I ever had in this area! I generally prefer chocolate croissants than almond croissants. Surprisingly, the almond croissant here tasted much better. I bought other bakery too. They're fine but none of them tasted as good as the almond croissant. I can't wait to buy more of them during my next visit to The Barlow. Service was fine. We ate the bakery outside with our mocha and hot chocolate while watching our grandson played in the Imagination Playground. It's nice and relaxing. read more

Sarmentine is by far the best patisserie in Sonoma County. Their croissants are to die for - so soft and pillowy on the inside with so many crisp layers on the outside, and so full of rich, buttery flavor. Their tarts are also really delicious. Unfortunately, it's quite expensive. So much so, that this is more of an occasional splurge as opposed to a regular breakfast option. With tax and tip, a tart is $10 and you'll be out around $6 for a croissant. Also, do we really tip at these counter-service joints now? read more
