Solid sushi, the rolls were nice and tasted fresh, small choice on the menu, but well done. The gyoza was awful though, tasted like out of a bag and just dumped in the fryer (very greasy and soggy). I don't get it. Lots of five star reviews, mediocre sushi. A trend that continues here at Hana: no wasabi on the Nigiri sushi, and what is on the plate has no heat. I came here on a Friday and sat at the sushi bar. Just like at Big Fish, you order from a dedicated waitress instead of the sushi chef. I don't understand this. I had my usual starter, Spicy Tuna Roll. It tasted great. Lots of people coming in now. Bar is filling up. Everyone is ordering those fancy large rolls. I ordered some Nigiri. I had blue fin tuna, mackerel, and clam. Blue fin is good. No wasabi on the sushi. Mackerel tasted old and again, no wasabi. Clam is huge and tasted fine but no wasabi. I then ordered eel and flying fish roe. Eel was fine but tasted like it was artificially heated, like from a microwave. Good sauce on top. The roe is ok. Now I know what you're thinking. Just use the wasabi they give you. I did, and it had no heat. I want wasabi that has pain delivering heat. It's what I expect from horseradish. I spent $44 on sub par sushi. I'm not happy and I don't really understand the great reviews. read more

I would say the only complaint is when they got busy, (which they did) the 2 sushi guys trying to keep up with all the orders really couldn't keep up. So the wait for orders really slowed down. Valentines date with my daughter. We ordered food at first they gave us incorrect order, the waitress caught it and told the Chef. The second time it came with a bug crawling in the garnish. My daughter saw it. They redid the order. We ended up waiting a long time for our food. My daughter was frustrated as most of everybody who came after us got their food. They did say they were sorry. Even after all the inconveniences like incorrect order, bug in the food, long delay to get the food, they didn't even offer us a discount on the food. I didn't ask for a discount either. My sister had never tried sushi before so I wanted to take her to authentic restaurant rather than a grocery store section. The service was speedy and delightful. We got our order and food within 15mins of arriving and the server came by twice to fill our waters. Excellent sushi in my opinion. I am a big sushi eater and have to try new restaurants whenever I go. Hana Sushi is good stuff! The restaurant is small but each time I have gone I have never had to wait more than 5 minutes or so. The staff are all friendly and do a great job of ensuring you like your food. The sushi itself is incredible! The portion sizes for the Sashimi and Nigiri are all great. I would even say the quantity surpasses the price. Good prices and very reasonable portion sizes. There are a variety of misleading things you will notice about this listing. For starters? Not 2 $$; it absolutely 30+ bucks a head. Secondly, the place itself is quite tasty. Everything is fresh. They cut huge chunks of fish. Good quality, reasonable service, good rice. I genuinely liked it. The tea needed work, but hey, you can't win em all, right? Then the bill comes and its 70 something for dinner for two. You gotta be kidding me. We can spend half that at the little sushi joint by Albertson's for just as good of sushi. I give Hana four stars based on non-sushi items alone (I don't do sushi). I really like their tempura, in particular, because it's not too oily or heavy. Also, I thought their miso was perfect, I could have had three servings! I got a bento box, and I thought the Teriyaki was yummy, but not the very best I'd had. Want to know what I love most about Hana Sushi? (Besides the fact that it's within walking distance of where I live...) The rice. You are hard pressed to find good sushi rice in Seattle, which is a crime because there are so many good sushi places. It's just that the rice is usually...meh. Kinda sweet. Kinda seasoned. Sometimes crunchy. Sometimes too sticky. Meh. Hana got it right, or as close to right as I've found in my extensive sushi experiences - the rice is lightly acidic and just a touch sweet. Perfect. That aside, the atmosphere is hole-in-the-wall mom-and-pop shop (a customer left after telling the sushi chefs "see ya next week", so there's a fair share of regulars - this is also noted by the number of personalized sake cups you'll find behind the sushi bar), the miso soup will burn your tongue, the service is friendly, they are kid/family friendly, and the fish is amazing. They opt to add a bit of grated fresh ginger to the top of their albacore, which is good but not the best thing ever - Kanpai is still winning for the use of smoked salt. As Danny K mentioned, you're not going to get overly-sauced rolls. The rolls are simple and to-the-point and that's what matters. Good times. Also, ate there with one person and got three rolls (one of which was a cucumber roll) and two types of nigiri as well as two non-alcoholic beverages and came out at about thirty bucks. I'm sure it's easy to go way over that, but I want it to be known that if you're after a quick, tasty, fresh bite, you don't necessarily need to expect to pay a ton as several have mentioned. read more

Hana is great if you don't want a bunch of foofy rolls with cream cheese or strawberries or something totally non-sushi such as that. On the other hand, they don't usually have what might be called "exotic" or "unusual" items, such as goeduck or abalone. They pretty much cater to the crowd that's right down the center of the road. Their tempura is awesome, especially in the fall when they do a little yam and pumpkin in the mix. Tempura pumpkin is like dessert it's so good! Sushi chefs Sato-san and Hobin-san are really great to sit at the bar and chat with, especially if you share a little of your beer with them. You get to learn things like Hobin loves to gamble in Vegas and Sato loves bourbon. It's usually not so slammed that you actually get the interactive experience of chatting with the sushi chef, something I really miss in the overcrowded city restaurants where sometimes you don't even get to order directly from the chef...which to me is the whole point of sitting at the bar in the first place. You're always greeted with a warm towel, a cup of tea and a smile. Sushi shouldn't be "cheap". You should get a good ratio of fish to rice for your money, and here that's definitely the case. I gave it 3 $$$ because it's true. If you have a large Kirin at $8, a Dragon Roll at $14.50 (which is huge), and a couple pieces of Hamachi for $5.50, you're over the $30 range once you add tax and tip. I don't know many places I can get that much quality food and basically 2 beers for under 30 bucks. I compared exactly those items on a few other sushi restaurant's menus and crossed over the $30 mark as well, so I think the prices at Hana are comparable. read more

The first time that I went to this restaurant, my husband and I were greeted and chose to sit at the bar. The chefs behind the bar are very friendly, are happy to take orders directly, and seem to genuinely love what they do. Miso Soup came complimentary with our sushi orders, and the food was fantastic. When we had finished our meal, the chef behind the bar asked us if this was our first time at the restaurant, and we answered "yes." He then placed an order for complimentary mochi ice cream for us for dessert. I was just astounded by how amazing the staff was, and how kind they were. Yummy-yummy with super fast friendly service. My brother is a total regular here (which might explain why the waitress was so chatty she actually sat down with us for a few minutes) and I would be too if I didn't live 800 miles away! The little place was packed on a Wednesday night yet we still got tea and miso soup within moments of sitting down, order taken a couple minutes later, and served about ten minutes after that. Still we didn't feel rushed - even when we chatted over free tea refills for about an hour after they cleared our food. We ordered the spicy tuna, spicy yellow tail, california, Bothell, and Crunchy rolls. Most of the rolls have the Masago fish eggs (which is unusual for it to be predominant), so if you're not a fan you will to ask for it without. The meal came with complimentary miso soups. We're very lucky to have this place in Bothell! It's one of the hidden treasures in a little town that (let's be honest) is hurting for a few more good restaurants! The waitress was incredibly friendly. She left us alone to eat our food in peace, but was incredibly attentive when she needed to be. Ive been into Hana many times over the last couple of months. One time I had a huge group dinner and they were very accommodating to the 16 people that showed up. They sat up stares and were very good at getting everyone's food out in a timely manner with a smile. Im sure that wasn't the most fun thing for the wait staff. Ive always had fantastic service here and the sushi is pretty tasty. Hana is one of my favorite spots to meet my girlfriends for lunch! I always manage to burn all of my tastebuds off eating the Miso soup, apparently patience is a virtue. Each time we go we order the Main Street Roll, the Bothell Roll, some Spicy Tuna and a roll named for one of their employees, just can't remember the name! Each time the sushi has been very fresh and delicious. I'd consider Hana to be the areas #2 spot (Momoya is #1), definitely the best in Bothell I would say. I've lived in many states, and tried sushi and Japanese restaurants wherever I go. Hana Sushi is one of my Favorite ever. The restaurant itself is small and cozy, very clean, and the people are very nice. The owners are a couple that have been doing this for longer than I've been around lol. The quality of their sushi and menu really shows in their food presentation, ingredients, and taste. I always recommend it to people if they're visiting the Bothell area :) Parking is a bit tough sometimes but I've always found a spot. Oh and try happy hour- good deals. read more

I went here primarily because Kelsey F. started talking about the sushi rice. I am glad to say that she is 100% correct. This is fabulous rice, often times people just use regular rice for their sushi. I love it. The other thing I love is their tempura. Too many times I have been bitten by this greasy, doughy mess hiding the wonderful vegetables. I tend to prefer recipes that use panko, while Hana does not use panko they do vary the texture of the batter so that it is very light and airy. I did have the Chirashi, something I have been wanting to try since moving to Bothell a few weeks ago. It was a good mix of different fish and some octopus. The salmon was especially delicious. Not to mention the real crab in the California roll...none of that imitation stuff here. Hana Sushi is a definite repeat for us. read more

It's hard to get a "food coma" from sushi, but with enough saki it can be done. My sister is an avid sushi eater, I'm an ametuer, and my mother is somewhere in between. Hana Sushi catered to each of our varying preferences with speed and a smile, and it was worth the cost (which was considerable, since we ordered everything a la cart - they do have combos, though). The only negative thing about Hana Sushi is that it's small, and I had hoped for more privacy as my family celebrated my mom's birthday. I realized quickly, though, that even though we were close to other free-standing tables it still *felt* private. The just-at-the-right-moments service made up for any possible lack, anyway. I'll definitely travel back to Bothell to meat my eastside friends for sushi, tempura, and dessert. (Mango ice cream, yum!) Oh, and the saki, of course. read more

Hana is your average sushi restaurant with extra human touch. Sushi, good, sashimi, nigiri, good, fried food, not so good. Hamachi Kama (and Salmon Kama), very good! Price, hmmm, I wish it was a bit less. It is something my husband and I look forward to for date night. Love sitting by the sushi bar and chat with the chefs.
