Rainbow roll, Chicken Katsu, electric iced tea.
    Gabriel G.

Rainbow roll is a sampler of different rolls for folks like me who don't know what to order. The shrimp ones hit best but all were solid. Ordered katsu curry but it was basically just katsu, not much curry. It's possible I got the wrong order but I was hungry. Tried an electric iced tea. No mention of ingredients on the menu which I didn't like but it looked and tasted good. It wasn't super strong but not weak either. Caveat: I don't drink often. A couple folks taking care of a full Friday dinner rush with little issue with prompt food service and polite all around. Good spacing between tables. Parking lot available and close to a bus stop on Bothell Way.

    Prawn Tempura, $14.95 - 0 Star

Toma Sushi replaced Ikiiki Sushi. I never been to either one and decided to give them a try. As soon as I saw the menu, I wanted to get up and leave. But hubby was hungry and wanted to stay. The thing is I have a pet peeve against pan Asian places. Despite the restaurant name, this is a pan Asian restaurant with random dishes of Thai-like, Chinese-like, etc., dishes on the menu. There is always a strong chance that the restaurant doesn't have the proper Japanese training and/or some of the dishes would be made incorrectly for the region. Unfortunately, I was proven right again. I have a strong preference for authenticity; this is not the place. The restaurant is sparsely decorated. The service was sufficient. The Food: Agedashi Tofu, $6.95 - 0 Star They did not use the right kind of Japanese tofu, such that the bite inside is not smooth and custardy. In fact, their tofu is old with hints of sourness. It was gross. They didn't include the freshly grated daikon and instead add the shaved bonito flakes that you can buy in a package. Poor substitution. Prawn Tempura, $14.95 - 0 Star Before we ordered, I had doubts if they really make good tempura. The server said they are good and are BIG pieces, with emphasis on the word big. She clearly does not know what a prawn tempura is supposed to look like since these are skinny finger type of diameter. I can buy frozen ones from Asian markets that can air-fry to look similar than theirs. Again, no freshly grated daikon for the dipping sauce. Soft-Shell Crab Mango Salad Roll, $15.95 - 2.5 Stars Menu: Soft-shell crab, mango, avocado, cucumber, and mixed-baby greens wrapped in rice paper, served with spicy mango sauce I was curious how their creativity would pan out with this dish, a mix of Japanese and Vietnamese. The soft-shell crab didn't stand out well enough; it's a fried 'something undefined' type of taste. Basically, need more crab. The mango sauce is not spicy; it's a pale-yellow goo. I didn't like it or hate it. Not ordering this again. Hotate (scallop) nigiri, $6.25 - 3.5 Stars The better of the two nigiris of the night. The scallops were good and fresh. Sake (salmon) nigiri, $6.50 - 3 Stars Hubby liked them better than me. I believe they are Atlantic and had a milder taste. They added slit-cuts to the salmon pieces. I think all the Japanese sushi chefs would be appalled. Spider Roll, $11.50 - 3.5 Stars Menu: soft-shelled crab, avocado, cucumber, mango, tobiko This basic roll was the best deal amongst what we ordered, which is kind of sad since it's a shorter roll with five pieces only. Cherry Blossom, $16.95 - 3 Stars Menu: Salmon and avocado, topped with tuna, seaweed salad, tobiko, drizzled in poki sauce This roll is busier than I like. The seaweed salad on top was a bit much. It was an ok combination, just not something I would order again. Godzilla, $17.95 - 3 Stars Menu: Soft-shell crab & avocado topped with seared spicy salmon, tempura flakes and unagi sauce This roll is a small step up from the Spider Roll with the salmon on top and cost $6.45 more. The tempura flakes didn't add value to the bite since the fried soft-shell crab already provided the crunch.

Pretty cool room inside the restaurant.

Apparently the old Ikiiki Sushi is now replaced by the new "Toma Sushi." The menu has changed significantly, and the food looks much more delicate than before (yes this is opinionated). We got what they called the Sea Turtle roll and the Unagi Don. They are a bit on the pricier side but the taste is solid. The restaurant is very clean and the service was great. Would visit again.

The menu changes seasonally, and they host special events once or twice a month with unique fixed food and drink pairings-so there's always something new to try (and the events are a blast). A huge part of what keeps us coming back is the staff. The servers are friendly and attentive (and a lot of fun to chat with if it gets slow). And if you sit at the bar (highly recommend!), Cameron and Michael take it to another level. They're both talented, passionate and a lot of fun. They're always happy to make something off-menu or surprise us with bartender's choice. They've definitely turned us into cocktail snobs lol. And the food absolutely holds its own. We originally came for the cocktails on another bartender's recommendation, but we were blown away by how good everything has been. The ribeye is easily as good (or better than) steaks I've paid twice as much for elsewhere. The burger and fries are among the best around-and these days, one of the best deals anywhere if you go during happy hour. Similar can be said for everything else on the menu; we've had every appetizer, entree and side dish at least twice :P And since we're usually posted up at the bar, when there's a lull we sometimes get to chat w/ the kitchen, and it's clear they take real pride in what they do. It's just an awesome place with awesome people! :)

We split an udon dish ($12.95), ordered 5 sushi plates + 1 order of crab rangoon but the portions felt quite small for the price. The fish did not taste as fresh or high quality as I was hoping, and the overall meal was underwhelming. Service was also inconsistent during our visit. We waited about 25 minutes before anyone noticed our water glasses were empty. At one point, I tried to get a staff member's attention for a refill, and they told me to hold on while they grabbed a white to go bag for another table in front of us. Unfortunately, they never came back, and we ended up waiting even longer. My friend and I's total came to about $41 per person after tip, and I left feeling disappointed with the value for what I received. For a similar price point, I personally prefer BittyFish in Lynnwood, where I have found the portions, quality, and overall experience to be better. Sushi Zone was not terrible, but it was not memorable enough for me to return. The flavor was good, the place is pretty clean and stocked though for options. Just wish the prices were better priced for the portion or the portions were bigger to match the price. Felt a little scammed.

They even had a gulab jamun inspired ice cream, which really caught my attention. There were four of us, so we ordered a sundae with a brownie and two scoops of ice cream - it was generous and easily enough to share. It was my first time having a brownie served warm with ice cream, and I absolutely loved that touch. The fruit flavors were especially enjoyable, particularly the mango and banana chocolate chip. The cardamom flavor was a bit overpowering for my taste, but the mango was definitely a standout. The staff were incredibly patient and let us sample as many flavors as we wanted, all with a smile. I'll definitely be coming back!
