What an adorable winery! From the service to the goats it was an awesome experience. First, the goat tower was incredible. I thought I was not going to get to actually see the goats climb it, but as we were enjoying a lovely bottle of wine and delicious charcuterie board when it happened!!! They were so adorable and it made my day. We were able to not only have a wine tasting, but a grape and oil and vinegar tasting! Wow, was not expecting that! The winery is not huge, but it is such a cozy and comfy ambiance, with a gorgeous view of the grapes and goats. Worth the visit. I know we will be back! read more

Drove out here for medieval tournament last weekend...that was a fun experience. But the winery itself was terrible - they were completely out of all food items by 1:30pm, their credit card machines were down and there were no signs announcing it. We stood in a long line just to be told we could not purchase anything. We did go back to the car and found some cash for a glass of wine. The cashier recommended their "bacon castle" red wine and it was pure vinegar - we had to pour it out. My Mom wanted to try their wine slushy, which is what we paid for, but then were told they are completely out and we would have to wait at least another 20 minutes for it to be made. We then asked for a spritzer instead, which was cheaper $6 cheaper for two glasses. But when we asked for the money difference back, the cashier looked at us like we were the crazy ones. Plus, the spritzer was not good either. We did like the little goats roaming by the tower though, which provided a nice ambiance, but that's about it. read more

This is such a hidden gem for Hampton Roads. It is located out in Elberon so it is a bit of a drive but worth it. The area it is in is remote and very quiet which is actually really nice and peaceful! We came on a Saturday to meet friends and were the first ones there. We walked around a bit to see the famous goat tower and it did not disappoint. The goats were so cute and seeing them go up and down the tower was amusing. We then went inside the winery to check it out and I was happily surprised to see how nice it was. The inside was beautiful and the decor was very classy. They even have a little store with local goods such as jam, treats, and a full olive oil bar! If we were not getting ready to move I would have grabbed some of their truffle olive oil because it was delicious. At the bar the workers were very nice and happy to explain the wines. I went with a sampler first and tried a few of their reds and their wine slushy. The slushy was such a highlight and really exceeded my expectations. All of the wines were on point so I got a glass of their cab after my sampler. Once the live music started (it was a Saturday) a nice crowd showed up to enjoy it. There us plenty of seating inside and outside under umbrellas so that was really nice. Some of the groups brought picnics to enjoy which we thought was awesome but if you don't the winery has snacks you can order. We had the charcuterie board and cheese ball and both were perfect for the occasion. We had such a great time that I wish we would have discovered this place sooner! read more

This is a lovely campus in Surry County. It's pretty far out! So it's a drive whether you're coming from Hampton Roads or Richmond. They have a fun goat tower and a group of goats out front. You can grab a cup and pay 50 cents for a few handfuls of goat food inside. We were helped by Amy and she's really nice! She knew the wines well and did everything by herself while we were there. There's a fun gift shop with wine themed gifts. They also sell vinegar and oil, I believe they said it was made by a local Greek family. Free samples if you're not sold! There's high tables by the bar, tables behind the bar, and outdoor tables. You can get a flight of 4 (wine, slushie, or mead) for $8. You can get a glass to take home, if you want. They also sell wines, mead, and the summer wine slushies by the glass or bottle. There's some rotational of snack foods. They have several chartruchie boards, choose from cheese, meat, and fruit combos. There's also nachos, pimento cheese and crackers, and chicken salad on croissants. We had a nice time, it was slow and we felt good and comfy chatting and having wine and mead. The food was nice, if a bit snack food-like in some cases, like the nachos. The wine was so-so. Our group of three only had a few we liked. That's a little unusual for us. Many wines were thick feeling and/or having astringent after tastes. My favorites were the wine slushie and the citrus mead. Scoring 4 / 5 stars due to snacks, not much real food, location in the boonies, and not enough wine to my taste. But the campus is lovely and clean, we all had a great time. read more

Hampton roads winery is as much about the setting as it is their product. Set in a fantasy like setting with a vineyard and goat farm with beautiful outdoor seating. Super affordable with knowledgeable staff. We loved their dessert wines and mead offerings. Great spot for families or date nights. read more

We stopped by this winery on the way back from berry picking last week and were pleasantly surprised. As someone who spends a lot of time in the VA wine scene, I was excited to see this place pop up on Yelp - but it's just far enough from home that it needed a special day trip to check out. So putting it together with berry picking was perfect - picked a bunch of strawberries, then went to relax and try some wines. They are a newer operation in an old carriage-style house that would be fantastic to rent out for a special event like a wedding or a large party. We were greeted by two young boys who were happy to show us where the wine tasting room was. We both did the full tasting. They are a micro-winery, so they are producing and developing on-site, which is admirable for the VA scene. I wasn't a big fan of the Chardonnay - but it's not made on site. The Seyval Blanc was interesting and complex with melon notes and a bit of a smokey finish - rare for a white wine, and I dig it. The Cab Franc had sort of an olive taste to it, which was okay, just not the norm for what you expect from a VA Cab Franc. The Petit Verdot showed strong character - though we'll have to see how it ages. It's a little young at this point, but drinkable. We weren't crazy about the sweet wines (but that's normal for us), but I did really enjoy the wine slushy sample - we went ahead and picked up a pack of that to do a pool party later this summer. Also pretty cool - they have goats on the premises that you can feed and watch climb up and down their "tower." It's really cute actually. Our server said they plan to make goat cheese at some point, which I think would be a fantastic addition to what they've got going on so far. As far as winery experiences go, I'd put it at a solid 3.5 - pretty quiet, family-friendly kind of place. Might have been better if we hadn't been the only visitors or if there was more of an opportunity to meet and mingle with the winemaker(s). I'm sure they'll start adding to their catalogue as well, which will help round out the tasting. read more

I am hosting six friends from Europe for Thanksgiving in Williamsburg, Virginia. After taking the Scotland Ferry to show my friends the natural beauty of the James Rover, we started driving in Surrey County, at first expecting to turn around and go straight back to the ferry. We soon saw a sign for the winery, and decided to pay a visit in the hope that it would be open. Sure enough, the vineyard was closed as it was Thanksgiving Day. However, the line of magnolia trees leading up to the farmhouse was so beautiful that we decided to approach nonetheless. Once we arrived near the tasting room, we exited the car to get some fresh air and see the African pygmy goats that were grazing nearby. Dave, the owner of the winery, soon approached us. Rather than ask us to leave his property (it was closed!), he was extremely welcoming and introduced us to the goats - and explained their history - that we had been watching. Little did we know that he has the tallest goat tower in the world! If you want to know more, or have no idea what a goat tower is, I highly recommend you visit this winery. He also provided us with a history of the property, and then ended our impromptu visit with a tour of his fermentation and production rooms. It was by far the best tour and explanation of the wine-making process that I have ever seen or heard. Many larger vineyards simply point at things that are often yards away, while Hampton Roads allows you to see and touch things first-hand. He also gave us a description of many wine-tasting words, and then translated them to English so we would be better informed in the future. Dave was extremely personable, gracious and funny - and made for an excellent experience for my friends from abroad. I am looking forward to visiting his tasting room during their normal hours! read more

I frequently travel 460 to visit family and often times have thought about taking just a few extra minutes to try the Hampton Roads Winery. This week I finally did it and it was worth my time. I got to do a one on one tasting with one of the owners, where I asked questions about the wine and the property. The tasting included 8 or so different wines and a souvenir glass. I purchased a bottle of their Chardonnay which will make for a perfect gift to bring to Christmas, it even has a holiday label. I would recommend giving this winery a try if you travel by it often like me or live in the area and have yet to visit. Don't forget to stop by and say hi to the goats while you are there. read more

If I never drank any of these wines ever again, I would be totally fine with it. Most of them were sour or just overall very unusual and unpleasant. The house-made wine slushie was probably the most palatable part of the wine tasting. The goats are fun and the customer service was great. read more

A fun winery with grapes I had never heard of that blew me away. Scuppernog grapes make amazing wine, and has become one of my instant favorites. It is fun to say, and can get a fun reaction from a sommelier. The winery was previously a farm that raised horses before people drove cars. It was even visited by Theodore Roosevelt. Nice presidential history. Worth the trip. In fact, it was multiple times better than I expected. For $8 you get to keep a branded wine glass, and try around 8 different wines. So awesome! read more

Had high hopes for this winery but left very disappointed in the actual wine. Beautiful drive out to Surry and the Farm itself but upon going into the winery and getting our tasting board, we couldn't wait to leave and get the taste out of our mouths. The goats were really cute and so was their tower. The grounds were gorgeous to have an event at but I would not care to have the wine sponsoring any event. Maybe the Mulled wine but everything we all tasted was just off. Definitely not up to winery quality wine. read more

Great little winery with a great staff (btw, It has the largest goat tower I've ever seen). The wines are solid. Six wines right now but more are coming from what we were told. It has a nice patio out back with plenty of seating that overlooks a large pond. I would recommend this place for locals and visitors to the area. I must say the previous reviewer knows very little about wine.....Stelvin Closures (aka, screw caps) are becoming the norm. And cork is expensive and inconsistent. read more

I was really excited when I heard there was a grand opening of a new winery locally. I've been to the Williamsburg winery and I was hoping for a similar experience but that's not what I got. The winery wasn't bad, I was just expecting a little more for the hour drive. I was very grateful it was a nice day, so the drive was pretty good. When we arrived the first thing I saw the the goat tower they advertised online, in the photos it looked much much bigger so that was my very first let down. There were a few vendors selling food and other items. I thought there were going to be many more since this was the grand opening. After checking out the vendors we moved inside the main building to do our tasting. Their shop was very small and it was combined with where they do their tastings, so it made it a little cramped. Everything seemed very basic. The wines; we tried 6 total because 6 is all they make lol 3 white and 3 red. The best was the Chardonnay (which isn't saying much), which was the first one we tried. The rest were not good at all. I think they should have taken a bit more time to perfect their craft and come out with really great wines. Plus all of their wines have screw caps, Ive never been to a winery that didn't have corked wines. After the tastings, we went on the tour which wasn't very long. I probably wouldn't return but I have happy I ventured out on a nice Saturday to Surry. read more
