What a beautiful drive in. Tucked back a few winding roads, and up into the long driveway you enter a beautiful property known as Chatham Vineyards. We were warmly greeted and taking care of. We even had a little bit of history explained along with the process. We got an entire flight to try it all. It was nice! I cannot tell you if it was good though, because I don't really drink wine or well alcohol for that matter. But, the ambience and experience made it all great we had some nice giggles as we tasted. Overall it was a nice experience You can stay up to date on all things Chatham via their social media outlets and website. The little retail area is nice. A few items from local artists. A covered space or umbrellas to shade from the sun would be a great addition. read more

6 years later and this spot is still a fantastic little gem. After moving to DE we realized we couldn't get wine shipped to us, but now that we've joined the Chatham wine club, we have a quarterly excuse to spend the day roadtripping to the vineyard for a wine pickup. Over the years, this place has grown in staff (and production, it seems) but still maintains that local-ish feel for everyone who walks in the door. Grabbed our club allotment with a few of the classics thrown in for good measure: Un-oaked Chard, Rose and Cab Franc. Bring a picnic, grab a glass and let the pastoral views relax you. read more

A beautiful small winery. They had plenty of indoor and outdoor seating . We decided on wine flights and a cheese platter. Good little variety of wines that they have and they grow all their own grapes for. Outside is dog friendly but no dogs inside. The staff was super friendly and attentive and they even came outside to our group to tell us about there wines and take our order. Great little spot to go to if you are in the area . read more

Went here our first time about 20 years ago and let me tell you this place has really grown up well. Let's start with the staff. Everyone in the place was warm and welcoming from the folks that met us at the door to the owner who we had a wonderful conversation with about his winemaking journey. The wine is wonderful. Every wine we tried were delicious. Of particular note is their two Chardonnay wines. These are not your traditional Chardonnays. The winemaker gave us the excellent description of "these are Chardonnay for people that don't like Chardonnay". The reds were all good and all had distinctive characteristics that I have no doubt has a lot to do with the distinctive soil qualities of the Eastern Shore. Also of note to the "big red" drinkers, they may be releasing a Petite Verdot in the near future. I'm not a desert wine guy but there's was pretty good. It is a port style and has that raisin and tobacco richness often found in ports. The food selection is limited but still good for a nice snack to go along with your wine. A heads up on the environment, the tasting room is in a large warehouse style building so there is limited temperature control. If it's cold out dress appropriately. It can be a little chilly. Makes for an easy day trip from Hampton Roads. Go for a tasting. You won't be disappointed. read more

Cute little winery! I'm a red wine kind of girl so I went with the Vitner! But don't worry, they have rose and white wine available too! Buuuttt....the Vitner is very flavorful! They have a meat and cheese board and outdoor sitting only. Kid and dog friendly. They have their own parking area as well. Bathrooms are available and cute merch such as coasters, blankets etc. Staff was very friendly and definitely a good place to "unwine." Excellent vineyard and overall wine experience. The only thing holding back from 5 stars is that I'm more of a red drinker and being summer and they were white heavy. Even so, I found a few I really liked. Chatham's story begins...35 million years ago (work with me here), when a meteor strike created what would become the Chesapeake bay. The vineyard's location buffered between the Atlantic and Chesapeake can be described as a trade-off of different conditions, as it never get's the heat a California-type vineyard gets, but at the same time it never gets particularly cold. The result is a terroir friendly to a lot of grapes, especially those who like mineral-rich whites. Today, they have 20 acres of vines and make around 5000 cases/year. I arrived early on a Friday and had the place to myself. The manor home is historic, although the owner's live there. White wines across the board were light and refreshing, often with nice minerality to them. I especially liked the 2017 Chardonnay, fermented in steel. The rose was a nice pinkish color. But a not-distant 3rd favorite was their French oak Chardonnay - it was a perfect example of how to get the most out of your oak barrels but not over-doing it. read more

My husband, 3 year-old son and I went a couple weekends ago and loved it! A quaint winery, dog and kid friendly! My son had a great time playing out on the lawn with their variety of lawn toys/games while my husband and I enjoyed a wine flight (with a variety of white and red wines) and a cheese and meat plate. If you're on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, this is a must stop kind of place. The owners and all of their employees are the nicest people. It's a great way to spend an afternoon. We particularly like the oak Chardonnay and the steel Chardonnay. Get a wine flight and some snacks. Grab a table outside and enjoy yourself. Kids along for the ride? I don't even know where to start. The beginning I suppose. So, it was my birthday and my husband wanted to spoil me by taking me to an amusement park, well with my heavy research I found out it wouldn't even be opening until March, so with time running out and my birthday sneaking up on us, I thought "Why don't we do a wine tasting?" About 5 minutes later I came across Chatham. I was impressed but then afraid it was going to be a bit pricy. That's when I found out about the Wine & Oyster event. I knew we just had to go then. We did a wine tasting and we did the oysters. We got an extra pound of them and we don't regret it at all. The Bayside and Seaside Eastern Shore Oysters were to die for. The wine hit it out of the park. 2. The oysters here were spot on! Fresh and delicious. I don't think you will find better oysters anywhere. I really have nothing bad to say about this place. We were a little bummed that they were sold out of their steel chardonnay but you can't blame them, it's a hit! We ended up purchasing their Rosé (our second favorite). We for sure will be coming back sooner rather than later I can say that with confidence. read more

Since we all had off for Presidents Day, we decided to head down to Cape Charles from Philadelphia and enjoy the long weekend away from the city. We were pleasantly surprised with how much was open due to COVID and it being the off season. I have been curious about Chatham Vineyards for the past few years, and we finally went for one of their oyster weekends, which they host on holiday weekends January, February, and March. I don't eat oysters, but my brother and boyfriend had two orders of them since they were so tasty. I ordered a wine flight--6 wines (each with a great pour) for only $15! We also shared a cheese plate which I also really enjoyed. The seating is spread out and we were lucky to sit between barrels in the back (which sounds funny but look at the photo!) There is also a tent available for seating outside as well. Everyone wore a mask and we felt very safe, and the staff was very kind and welcoming. Highly recommend the 2019 Church Creek Rosé! read more

The drive up there - amazing. Once we turned to what we thought was the vineyard (good ol' marketing) we were surprised to find out that was a private residence and the winery was to the right. But we didn't get discouraged and went on with our adventure. We had a lovely wine tasting and learned about the history of the winery and its owner. After the tasting, we had a unique in taste wine of glass and sat outside around a fire pit and enjoyed the scenery and peace that came with it. Ideally, we'd come back for the kayak tour, because that seems to be the only way people are allowed to walk around the vineyard close to the water. Onto the next one! read more

I absolutely adored the Chatham Vineyards. The location here is, as evidenced by the pictures, absolutely ideal. It's a beautiful vineyard squirreled away in the virtual middle of nowhere. Though the photos on here indicate the beauty of this place, it is even more breathtaking in person. The wine is also spectacular. The steel-aged and barrel-aged chardonnay were superb, as was the rose. All wine is excellently smooth and differentiated. Their Vinter's Blend (a very deep, slightly spicy red) was our personal winner - it captured pretty much all of the excellent elements of the wine here without going overboard. read more

well not the experience we would have wanted due to COVID but we this winery was doing everything possible to provide us a safe environment and allow us to taste their wines. I did a flight of only 3 due to it was so warm outside. Both Chardonnay's one aged in Steel and one in Oak and I will admit both were crazy good but the Oak was my favorite of the two. I then went out of my norm and ordered the Cabernet Franc and WINNER! it had the perfect amount of flavors that burst and lingered the right amount of time. So I bought a bottle to take home and enjoy with a little snack tray when it's cooler. But we will be returning to this loving place to sample the rest in the near future. read more

Finally made the drive over the big water and visited the actually winery in Machipongo. Pleasant drive, great scenery and nice vineyard. The tasting room & production facility are off of the main highway on a graded dirt road. Counter space holds about 10-12 people and the tasting is complimentary. Staff are friendly and on the date of my visit, one of the owners was there providing great information about the wines and the winery. Chatham produces a nice range and all are grown on the estate. There is some seating outdoors if you care to take a glass outside or have a picnic. Kayak tours are also available and I am looking forward to trying that in cooler weather. Two thumbs up for: quality wine, friendly service, reasonable prices, free tasting and nice location. read more

What do you do when its cold, rainy, and covid social distancing and you happen to be at a beach town? You go wine tasting of course! This cute winery was about an hour from Chincoteague. They have half flights or full flight tastings. The pours were reasonable and generous. We sat outside (again covid) and had some shelter but the rain and wind were not friendly on the day we were there and we got a bit of a mist. The grounds were pretty -- at least from what we could see on the back patio and the cheese/bread plates were good. I am not a big wine drinker but do like the occasional wine and cheese outing. I wish I could have asked the vineyard a bit more about their wines and get some history of the winery etc. but again with covid this wasnt possible, though the staff here went out of their way to make sure our needs were being met. All in all a great experience, lovely friendly staff and if we get back to the area post covid will have to look up the vineyard again for another visit. read more

Third and final stop (and last winery) on the Eastern Shore. Chatham and Jon Wehner, the owner and winemaker, are fixtures at festivals all over the state. We weren't disappointed by the winery or the wines after trying them at festivals. The tasting opened with a 2009 chardonnay, which was great, only to be trumped by his 2010 vintage chard, which knocked us out completely. Hands down one of the best chardonnays we've had in Virginia, and the country as a whole. We're tempted to visit his website and order several cases - 2010 was a good year for chardonnay, and other Virginia favorites, due to the growing season weather. That will certainly not be the case for the rain and hurricane dominated 2011 growing season. His other wines were not shabby either. We snapped up another bottle of merlot (third good to great merlot on the Shore) to enjoy with Thanksgiving dinner. His Cab Franc was excellent - smoky yet smooth. Outside, guests can enjoy several tables and take in the vineyard view. A nice way to finish up the Eastern Shore winery jaunt. read more

You know that feeling you get of wanting to shower in bug spray after finishing a wine tasting? No? You will after coming here. It pains me to say this because the staff was lovely and the wine was quite good, but my god, the fruit flies. Another review described the infestation as biblical, and I am forced to agree. Now, I know what you are thinking... it can't be that bad! After all, this is a business. Ok, let me paint a picture or two. Ever gone walking in a park and come upon a cloud of fruit flies? Now imagine standing in one. When we arrived for a tasting, a guest next to us was just finishing his. Less than a minute after he left, I looked at his glass, and the rim was covered in fruit flies. They actually made the whole rim black. Throughout our tasting, we had to keep swatting the flies from our faces, and at one point, our server had to change the tasting glass, because a fly got in. My husband and I left feeling itchy all over, and could not wait to go home and shower. Overall, we would have returned based on the wine and service, but as it stands, that apocalyptic legion of flies has made it so we will stay very, very far away and stick to buying their wine at the store. read more

We vacation every year on Cape May and on the way up from North Carolina we found this lovely winery. My wife was hosting a July wine tasting and her theme was red and whites from Virginia celebrate July Fourth Holiday. Finding good wine from Virginia is difficult at best having lived there for 23 years after living in California for 8 years. However coming up Route 13 we saw this little sign for this winery so we took the turn. It was really a great experience. They only do about 6000 cases a year and we tasted everything. It is a beautiful setting but not a tourist trap. The owner and winemaker was there and we were very impressed. He sold his wines to restaurants in Washington and Richmond, places we knew very well. The merlot was a terrific and the rose was as good as I have ever had. It is also great place if you want to get married in a pretty setting. If you are ever on the Eastern Shore of Virginia stop here. You will not regret it. read more

My second visit to this winery. Wonderfully knowledgeable and friendly staff. Did you know the best crabcakes in the Delmarva are found on a restaurant in the middle of the bay bridge and that an ancient meteor caused the formation of the Chesapeake Bay? I do now. That same meteor must have been responsible for the unique mineral content in the rich loamy soil that gives the wines of the Eastern shore their unique flavors. I recommend the Vintners Blend ($8 glass, $24 bottle) or the 2015 Merlot. A note if you're planning on stopping by for a tasting: the fruit flies in the tasting room are out of control. Apparently the weather and time of year are irrelevant. I'm not talking about a mild annoyance, it's a biblical plague in there. read more
